Anime distributor valued at US$150 million

I wouldn’t expect any major changes soon, Funimation has commitments to Crunchyroll and Universal that would be hard, if not impossible, to unwind. On the other hand, the deal has to be reviewed by regulators ( FTC? ) and it would just be Funimation’s luck that the bureaucrat assigned the task would have a grudge against SONY.

Yeah, this is going to be interesting. I’m not going to write off Funimation, yet, but this still screams of them not being in the best financial shape, since whoever owned the majority of the company felt it was in their best interests to sell.

seems they needed someone new to cushion their fall…again.
First Navarre and now Sony.

And in a couple of years they’ll buy themselves back at a vastly reduced price…like before, to a tune of 24 mil.

Well this was rumored back in March when supposedly sometime earlier both Universal and SONY Pictures had done due diligence on Funimation and passed on it. Now several months later a deal is announced with SONY Pictures. Did the price ( $143 Million for 95% per the article ) drop from some earlier higher figure? The various SONY divisions have a fairly high degree of autonomy, but they would still jump if the right people in Japan were to speak up.

Only time will tell if we are to learn anything at all.

Mark Gosdin

I wouldn’t be surprised if SONY eventually divested itself of SONY Pictures ( aka Columbia Pictures ) which is at best a risky business if not a money sink. Who would buy it? Well … someone with a huge pile of money maybe? Who do we know like that?

Viacom and Sony have held talks about merging Paramount and Sony Pictures before. That is one possibility because it would allow them to increase market share and cut nearly all of the rest of their business costs in half.

Disney has absolutely nothing to gain from buying Sony. The studio has no major franchises left, and it’s been struggling for years. Not to mention, Disney is the largest Hollywood studio and would have an uphill battle to get the deal approved, even with a Republican administration. It wouldn’t be worth the hassle.

Anyway, people need to not panic about the Funimation deal. What will be, will be. The only thing that is virtually guaranteed to happen is that Funi will eventually, probably sooner rather later, switch distributors from Universal to Sony. They may also end up switching replicators as well, since Sony often produces its own Blurays.

Those who are worried about Funimation being completely absorbed also have nothing to worry about. While Sony is buying a huge chunk of Funi, Fukunaga is still retaining a small percentage of the company. That means for the foreseeable future that Funimation will have to be a legally distinct division of Sony TV.

Loosing money in films, but overall SONY Corp. doing better than it had been.

Funimation Announces Chronos Ruler English Dub Cast

I think I have to agree with Justin that I can’t see the CR/Funi relationship remaining the same in the long term. Sony has no ownership stake in the company, so the only advantages are access to a larger library to dub and release on home video. However, Sony has the reach and cash to do that without CR.

While CR is big in anime streaming, it just doesn’t have the money to compete with Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix. Revenue wise, they’d probably make more money teaming up with one of the bigger players. Not to mention, they would have a better chance at really pushing anime into the mainstream outside Japan.

In the end, I would expect that eithe Sony will pull Funi away from CR to push their Animax brand here and in other markets, or they will attempt to purchase a stake in CR.
