Plot Summary: Hawaii Five-0 is an American police procedural drama television series and a re-imagining of the original 1968 television series. The series covers the actions of a small special state task force created by the Governor of Hawaii to investigate serious crimes throughout the Islands, as Hawaii does not have a conventional state police force. The team is headed by Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett, USNR as it investigates crimes ranging from terrorism to kidnapping. McGarrett chooses as his partner Honolulu PD Detective Danny Williams. He fills out the team by selecting Chin Ho Kelly, and Chin’s cousin, a rookie HPD cop named Kono Kalakaua. The task force does not follow the normal chain of command and instead reports directly to the Governor’s office. (from Wiki)*

Gotta love the music - and the show isn’t bad either.

I do miss the full version of the song, but I respect that this is one of the few modern shows that has a theme song, and a memorable one at that. I really do miss the era of the TV theme song.

Though finally, a post about a show that I’ve seen

I do like that, over the original, characters besides McGarrett actually do something. In the original, Dano was only really there for the iconic line. McGarrett is a rather wimpy looking former Navy SEAL & reservist. It was funny seeing him get beaten in MMA by The Iceman. I wonder if the season will really finish strong with Alex O’Loughlin reportedly addicted to painkillers. They say it will, last I heard, but I have my doubts. Scott Caan could probably carry the show for a while though, IMO.

It’s extremely hard for me to believe the fight sequences with the scrawny Grace Park. It was easy when she was a Cylon on Galactica but I don’t think she’s supposed to be a flesh-clad robot in this show lol.

Did anyone else notice that North Korea looked suspiciously like Hawaii in the show?

Can I be the only one rather glad that they phased out the scrawny blonde chick who came in to replace the traitor. Not only did she create an awkward and unnecessary love triangle with McGarrett but she was so unhealthily scrawny. There were several episodes where she was supposed to, I think, be exuding sex appeal but I didn’t see it. I just wish they hadn’t phased her out in such a ham-fisted manner.

I enjoy the show, though I wish it was less episodic. Continuity and overarching plots are the way. For current American shows, Person of Interest is the one I’m liking the most. On an anime-related note, the show had a fair number of homages to Samurai 7 a few weeks ago, including an obviously-placed poster.

never saw the original show. do like this re-make .

Ed Asner was pretty food in this week’s ep. Haven’t seen him outside of talk shows (or Up) in a long time.

But seriously, never seen the original? Shock.

Royal Pains (TV series)
Ted Roth
– A Man Called Grandpa (2011) … Ted Roth
– The Shaw/Hank Redemption (2011) … Ted Roth **** this was an Ed role ****** look stuff up at www.imdb.com - internet movie data base - there is a lot of older tv stuff that i have never seen . do you remember the days when the channels were - 4 - 9 - 14 - 27 - some days the old rabbit ears worked well and other days not so good .

Didn’t see those. Lost interest in Royal Pains when it lost any sort of overarching conflict (ie:when Hank stopped caring about getting his job back and avoided prosecution). It was all romantic crises and episodic MacGuyver medicine. There was a bit about Divya being closeted about her profession and leaving the team, but it didn’t call out to me. Same with Boris’ mystery illness. I find it hard to believe that a surgeon can hope to cure a rare genetic disease that trained medical specialists and researchers cannot.

The ep where Hankmed is approached by a criminal in hiding and then they rant about how it is immoral to help him really hurt the show for me. Hypocritical holier-than-thou characters aren’t my thing, which is why Ed Elric was my most despised character in all of FMA. Dr. Hank was basically Ed.

The episode where Hank is used to showcase socialized medicine when he’s forced to illegally go to Cuba where he is kidnapped by poor Cubans was pretty sketchy.

I had actually forgotten about Royal Pains until you posted. In the other thread, I’d still put royal pains above covert affairs for USA network shows. Royal Pains reminded me of Monster a bit, another show that didn’t really appeal to me.

have not yet watched newest episode but it is on the DVR box

Totally should. Ed Asner was the best guest star that I remember for the series, and he might even return. Definitely better than Caan’s father or Kenzie from NCIS.

Now that we’re back on topic (after my Royal Pains secant), what do y’all think of McGarrett’s sister? Personally I don’t really care for her. She only shows up to be the damsel in distress, though my major complaint with her is the voice. Anime dub haters have been ragging on the voices of actors like Greg, Carrie, and Hilary for years. Naturally I don’t understand this as I think that those actors are great, but his sister’s voice gets me closer to understanding such complaints.

With the hiatus I’ve managed to catch up with the season. Except for Ed Asner’s return, where he looked to go out like a complete punk, I’ve been enjoying it.

Though the camera shots that tried to “objectify” the actress who plays Catherine when she “seduced” the witless WitSec inspector in the bar were very, very weird.

I’m sort of saddened to hear that H 5-0 was renewed. It’s never been great IMO, just decent, but it took a dive from that this season.

The show was absurdly political this season and I didn’t care for that. 5-0 is supposed to fight crime, not run political campaigns. The original series had its moments where it became a political soapbox but the reboot took it to a whole new level this season (Bonus points for taking a fan-favorite original series ep and making it overtly political, in ways that the orig ep never was).

The biggest accomplishment that H5-0’s reboot has is that it is the only modern show on network TV with anything approaching a theme song.
