“Mysterious episode” to feature content not previously shown in anime, manga

The One Piece television anime series is getting a two-hour special next month as part of the show’s 15th anniversary celebrations. The “One Piece ‘3D2Y’ Ace no Shi wo Koete! Luffy Nakama to no Chikai” (One Piece ‘3D2Y’ Overcome Ace’s Death! The Oath With Luffy’s Crewmates) special will air on August 30 from 9 p.m. to 11:10 p.m. on Fuji TV stations.

The “mysterious episode” will be a completely new work that will have content not previously shown in the anime or the manga. The special will focus on the “3D2Y” code that Luffy’s crewmates must decipher, and will take place during the Straw Hat crew’s two-year training period. The special will also feature Luffy’s secret haki training with Rayleigh.

Toei Animation producer Hiroyuki Sakurada said that the special will not just include Rayleigh and Hancock, but also Buggy, Mr. 3, Mihawk, Perona, and Admiral Sakazuki (Akainu), among others. The World Government summons the Seven Warlords to take care of World, but he manages to capture them. Now World has his sights set on Boa Hancock. Oda also provided a comment on the new special, nothing that at the end of the special, “a must-see surprise for fans is waiting.”

Crunchyroll Adds 2 One Piece x Toriko Crossover Specials

posted on 2014-10-19 01:00 EDT

Specials featuring casts from both series originally aired in 2011, 2012

Media distribution service Crunchyroll on Saturday added two One Piece and Toriko crossover anime specials that originally aired in April 2011 and April 2012. The episodes are currently only available for premium members.

The two episodes, labeled as episodes 492 and 542 of One Piece respectively, follow the casts of both series as they meet in various places. The first episode focuses on the two casts as they meet on Hungry-la Island and encounter various beasts. The second crossover special focuses on the two casts as they try to find a special fruit to heal Chopper, who has fallen ill.

Both crossover specials are actually the second half of two-part specials, the first of which aired as episode 1 and episode 51 of Toriko respectively in April 2011 and April 2012.

Funimation did not stream any of the crossover episodes when they first aired, so Crunchyroll’s stream is the first time that the two One Piece-side episodes are legally available for streaming in English.

Crunchyroll also added more backlog episodes to its One Piece catalog on Saturday — episodes 373-384 to finish off the Thriller Bark arc.

One Piece: Episode of Chopper Film Gets New Animated Epilogue

posted on 2014-12-09 01:00 EST

New Year’s Eve airing to add new footage based on previously unanimated manga art

A 2014 special edition of the 2008 film One Piece: Episode of Chopper + Fuyu ni Saku, Kiseki no Sakura will add new animated footage to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the One Piece television anime. The new special edition will air on Fuji TV and its affiliates on December 31 at 9:00 p.m. (7:00 a.m. EST).

The movie depicts how Tony Chopper, the cute blue-nosed reindeer who serves as the ship doctor for the Straw Hat Pirates, met Luffy and the others during the Winter Island/Drum Kingdom arc. Livedoor News describes the film as the story that fans praise as the “most tearful in One Piece history.”

Original manga creator Eiichiro Oda contributed to the film during its early planning stages. The film featured Nico Robin and Franky (even though they did not appear in the orignal manga’s Drum Island arc) and the screen debut of the Thousand Sunny ship.

The original manga had opening page art that depicted what happened to the characters after this story. That art was the only depiction of the story’s epilogue until now; the 2014 special edition of the film will add special footage that animates the epilogue.

The ninth film in the One Piece anime franchise premiered in Japan in 2008, and ran at the Italian Future Film Festival the next year. In its New Year’s Eve time slot, the movie would go up against NHK’s Red & White Song Battle, the most popular music program of the year.
