Film beats Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno to earn biggest live-action opening in 2014

Rurouni Kenshin: Densetsu no Saigo-hen (Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends), the second of two live-action Rurouni Kenshin sequel films, opened on Saturday in Japan on 434 screens and sold 717,958 tickets for 919,479,200 yen (about US$8.57 million). The film beat the record of the first sequel film to garner the biggest opening of any Japanese live-action film this year.

By comparison, in its first three days, Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Taika-hen (Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno) sold 645,086 tickets for 822,734,430 yen (about US$8 million).

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy film also opened in Japan on Saturday and ranked in third place with 176,233 tickets sold and earning 224,145,400 yen (about US$2.09 million).

The live-action Lupin III film ranked at #4, the live-action Hot Road film ranked at #6, Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Taika-hen ranked at #7, and When Marnie Was There ranked at #10.

Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno opened in Japan on August 1.

The three live-action Rurouni Kenshin films have collectively earned over 10 billion yen (about US$90 million). The announcement was made on Monday, when lead actor Takeru Satoh appeared at a screening of the third film (Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends) at Tokyo’s Shinjuku Piccadilly theater. Satoh thanked the audience for helping to make this feat possible.

The Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno sold 4,011,497 tickets over 76 days, earning a box office total of 5,180,733,800 yen (US$48,347,800). Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends sold 3,035,533 tickets over 33 days, earning a box office total of 3,875,672,300 yen (US$36,244,938)

Kenshin Himura (Takeru Satoh) is a legendary swordsman, a hero in the wars preceding the turbulent fall of Japan’s Shogunate in the 19th century. This is the third and last of the live-action films based on the samurai manga by Nobuhiro Watsuki. The company describes the story as follows:

In the final chapter, Shishio (Tatsya Fujiwara) has set sail in his ironclad ship to bring down the Meiji government and return Japan to chaos, carrying Kaoru (Emi Takei) with him. After jumping overboard into the sea, Kenshin (Takeru Sato) is saved by his former mentor, Hiko Seijuro (Masaharu Fukuyama) and in order to stop Shishio in time, Kenshin enlists the help of his old master to train for the ultimate battle between hero and villain in an epic blood-drenched showdown.

In the feature, Shishio has set sail in his ironclad ship to bring down the Meiji government and return Japan to chaos, carrying Kaoru with him.
