Sorry Sentai, much as I’d like to finish up Total Eclipse by buying the 2nd bluray, y’all put that downright awful art on the cover so “no dice”. Maybe when RS drops the price.
New licensing announcement? I’ll only be happy if it’s the 2nd season of a certain gundo weilding coffin carrier, The GuP Anzio OVA, The IS2 World Purge OVA, or The Testament of Sister New Devil.
Although it’s just an announcement, it could be anything.

Q. Have you guys play some video games while break?
A. Not sure about anyone else, but I sometimes play Hearthstone during lunch.
Q. How come in Sentai Filmworks dubs, whenever an anime character starts singing, it switches over to the Japanese voice for that character, then switches back as soon as the character stops singing? How come the American voice actors almost never sing in dubs?
A. I asked someone in the licensing department to give me a little more info on why this is, here’s what they had to say:
“I would ask the questioner to understand that the songs are a unique work in themselves, and to change or adapt, would require a unique set of circumstances.
For example, just like if you were to watch an American made movie dubbed in another language, it would be highly unusual for the songs to be re-made into that language, especially by a famous maker or custom made for the movie.”
Q. Which shows will be getting dubbed?
A. Yes, totally.
Q. Mr. Sentai Media guy, we know what your favorite Anime is. What are some other popular titles that float around the office?
My favorite is of course Love Lab, but if you follow us on social then you definitely already know that. Let’s see…I asked people who are still here (it’s nearly quittin’ time!) what their favorite shows were…as well as their guilty pleasures, here’s what they gave me:
Shannon Reed (production assistant)
Guilty Pleasure: Muv Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse
Cayla Coats (Subtitler)
Favorite: Beyond the Boundary
Guilty Pleasure: Qwaser of Stigmata
Art Dept. Andrea (Artist)
Favorite: Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun
Guilty Pleasure: Queen’s Blade Rebellion
Ned Gayle (Production Assistant)
Favorite: Food Wars
Guilty Pleasure - DD Fist of the North Star

Roku Coming to The Anime Network!
As noted in the Roku Thread, a full announcement happens on Monday.
wasn’t there an ad for anime network being on Roku included on the bluray of Outbreak Company? kinda weird that they ran the ad before they had the service.

Outbreak Company’s official release date was March 3 - I believe they hoped it would be ready by then.
The original message on the Roku link was a “special announcement” for those that pre-odered Student Council Discretion, though it wouldn’t surprise me if it was added to other releases.

That wasn’t the only release that had the Roku info on it. There were several releases that were sent out early that had the Roku ad on it. (Mentioned here.)

I can’t get this to play, so I’m not sure which show it’s referring to.
So I’ll just stick it here.
Getting ready to kick this next show in the face!! @KyleColby @Sentaifilmworks #Anime

Q. How much fan service is too much?
A. Is this really a question?
There’s never enough service. In fact, this question itself is dangerously low on fanservice:
Q. Is it true that the Sentai Filmworks logo is getting a redesigned? Because i saw some of them on the September 2015 releases.
A. YES! Our logo has changed very slightly and will start rolling out in future releases. This is what it looks like now:
Q. When will Sentai become my waifu? :c
A. Can a waifu have waifus? That may be the only thing standing in the way, since we already have a waifu (Maki from Love Lab) and a seasonal waifu, Yamato from MY love STORY!!:
Q. Sentai-sempai… what kind of pantsu do you wear?
A. Made my way over to Art Dept. Andrea to get an in depth answer to this question. Unfortunately I was fired in the process, but here’s what she said anyway:
“I wear all kinds of pantsu! Because all pantsu are the best pantsu!!!”
Q. Why in recent sets are there paragraphs of text explaining references to other anime/manga series? I thought the point of references was to see which ones you know and which you don’t, and that’s what makes it fun.
A. You’re in luck! Our subtitlers Dwayne and Cayla were nice enough to provide some answers for this question:
Dwayne: The translator notes are a feature we’ve always included. But to answer the question, we add notes to explain obscure references. Of course, when we don’t explain something, we get the opposite reaction. We find it better to have too much than too little.
Cayla: I certainly see the point here, as I think drowning a show in notes can certainly take an audience out of the viewing experience. However, in cases where the humor or effect of a scene would ultimately fail without prior knowledge of a reference or allusion being made, the subtitlers agree that it’s better to include contextualizing information for a brief period than to let the intended effect of a scene get lost.
Thanks for your question!
###Ask Sentai #10: K-ON! Blu-rays and Pantsu For All Seasons
5/21/2015 5:40:56 PM
Hey guys! Time for another segment of Ask Sentai! This is the tenth edition of Ask Sentai, so we would like to thank everyone for always sending in your questions and making sure we stay on our toes. Thanks! This week we talk fanservice, waifus and pantsu. Let’s get started!
As always, if you want to ask us a question, hit up our ask.fm and we’ll try to answer!
I’m still wondering about this Q&A from Sentai:
How come in Sentai Filmworks dubs, whenever an anime character starts singing, it switches
over to the Japanese voice for that character, then switches back as soon as the character stops singing? How come the American voice actors almost never sing in dubs?
I asked someone in the licensing department to give me a little more info on why this is, here’s what they had to say:“I would ask the questioner to understand that the songs are a unique work in themselves, and to change or adapt, would require a unique set of circumstances. For example, just like if you were to watch an American made movie dubbed in another language, it would be highly unusual for the songs to be re-made into that language, especially by a famous maker or custom made for the movie.”
Don’t the Japanese dub English in-work songs all the time in major English-language releases? For example, The Japanese dubbed the Frozen songs: http://www.fandompost.com/2014/02/02/disney-japan-unveils-new-frozen-dubbed-song-teases/
Personally, and while this applies more to Funi as they have more applicable shows, if a show has an in-show song or OP/ED sung by the seiyu then it really ought to be redone by the dub cast for the dub (while-* glares at Funimation *-leaving the instrumentation the same). The English-japanese-English transition is jarring and, frankly, it’s not like many of these seiyu have stellar pipes.
If that’s the case, why haven’t they licensed The Teastament of Sister New Devil?
Who says they haven’t tried? Or maybe they have a surprise for us?
