Sentai / Anime Network Newsletters, Blogs & More!

A while back I was at a Matt Greenfield/Tiffany Grant panel a while back where they went into detail as to why those comparisons aren’t worthwhile. If only that had been YouTubed, it could’ve saved so much time and, maybe, enlightened the fandom.

I wouldn’t mind a Closed Caption/“dubtitles” option for the English track though.

###5 Scary Anime Scenes from Horror Anime
10/28/2016 10:03:28 AM

Often times when you’re describing your favorite horror anime to a friend, you’ll find yourself talking about your favorite scene right? Sometimes, we find ourselves defining an entire horror series by its best scary anime scenes. Maybe you’ve even HEARD of these awesome scenes, but you never knew which show they were from. Let’s get into the Halloween mood with these chilling moments.

####WARNING! THERE BE SPOILERS

###Spoiler Alert: Scary Anime Scenes Ahead

###Umbrella Scene from Another

You’ve probably seen the meme, but do you know where this scene of stair woe came from? This is the moment things began to go horribly sour in the anime horror Another. Think of it like anime meets Final Destination, and this unfortunate umbrella scene sets the tone for the rest of the (to put it mildly) “freakish” death scenes.

###The Fingernail Scene from When They Cry (Higurashi)

Whether you think this counts as a scary anime scene or just a very… very… uncomfortable one, most anime fans will concede that they’ve at least HEARD of this scene. This moment is definitely not for the faint of heart.

###The Zombie Attack from SCHOOL-LIVE!

This deceptively moe show has a few moments of terror, but we think the cake goes to this zombie attack scene. As far as scary anime scenes go, it’s not so much the jump-scare aspect as much as it is the anxiety of watching the girls we’ve come to adore face life-threatening danger.

###Rikka’s Suicide from When They Cry (Higurashi)

Imagine that you’re going to be tortured to death, and that you really, really want to escape it. Therefore, you do the only rational thing and stab yourself in the head with a knife in the wall, right? Eek.

###Pretty Much Every Ending in Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories

Yamishibai is a series of short stories based on Japanese urban legends and ghost tales. The series uses the “kamishibai” picture-story style, really bringing home the creepy-factor of these haunting five-minute tales. Always stick around for the “punch line” at the end of every episode.

###Scare Us Up for Halloween!
We love Halloween a quite bit much, and scenes like this set the mood for the creepy times ahead. Which are your favorite scary anime scenes? Let us know on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Google+.

Q. Thanks for answering the question; however, I don’t mean captions. I mean the full subtitles for the Japanese dialogue. I, and many others, like the option of watching a dub and comparing it to the sub script. Is there any way to offer that viewing option? Other companies offer it. Why not Sentai?

A. It’s something to look into, but at this point, don’t have a concrete answer for ya. It’s NOT an available option at this time, but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen in the future with demand.

###TUESDAY NEW RELEASES: TO LOVERU DARKNESS 2
11/1/2016 11:07:41 AM

###To loveru Darkness 2
Rito Yuki’s latest close encounters are starting to resemble a straight out invasion! While intergalactic romance is out of this world, attracting such high voltage vixens is not unlike being a fork stuck into an anti-matter engine to retrieve a plutonium bagel; it definitely messes with your head and heart. Rito struggles to grasp how he can love more than one girl at once, all while his inability to confess to his human paramour, Haruna, causes Devilukean Princess Momo’s Harem Plan to come to a standstill. On top of that, the transforming assassin, Golden Darkness, is still interested in killing him, but she has her own family issues to deal with. Not to mention, a different darkness lurks among the innocent pandemonium. Things are just as out of control as always, but danger is on the horizon in TO LOVERU DARKNESS 2!

A. Every season when we get a new tsundere waifu.

###ASK SENTAI #35

11/3/2016 9:36:27 AM

Q. Will we see more anime at the Alamo in the future?

A. There is a free Anime at the Alamo showing every Tuesday at Alamo Drafthouse in Katy (caveat: except for when the theater itself cancels the showing), but the hosted screenings are roughly once per month. We’re doing a hosted screening of Aoharu x Machinegun on Tuesday the 8th. We can’t speak for other Anime at the Alamos in other cities.

Q. Regarding The Anime Network, since you have licenses for Latin America, when will you make a platform for Spanish/Portuguese user? If not, are you planning contracts to LatAm broadcasters to put series in those plataforms, like you’re doing with TubiTV or Hulu? Thanks.

A. Some of the Sentai nearcasts/simulcasts are currently available on Anime Network Online with Spanish/Portuguese subtitles. Select shows (including RIN-NE 2, Flying Witch, and Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto) can be found here:

Anime Network Online will broadcast when Spanish and Portuguese subtitled shows are available to stream.

###8 MEMORABLE ANIME SCHOOL FESTIVAL DAY EPISODES
11/4/2016 4:43:03 PM

If you watch a lot of anime, you’re very familiar with the classic school anime conundrum of “Does our class produce a café or a haunted house??!! Choices, choices!!” The school festival trope is often used, not only because it’s a great way to see characters interact, but also because it’s a big part of Japanese students’ lives.

In Japan, yesterday (November 3rd) is often celebrated as national Culture Day. It’s around this time that schools usually hold their culture festivals. Even now, as Japan is ahead of us by around fourteen hours, students, alumni, and families are enjoying a variety of food stands, club events and classrooms turned into temporary food or entertainment establishments! Students are usually in charge of everything for the festivals, relying mostly on their teamwork and learned skills.

It’s more than an opportunity to show off what they’ve been learning; it’s a way to give back to the community. A lot of hard work goes into these festivals, but there’s also a lot of fun involved (and often a good chunk of hilarity). On top of that, these festivals offer a glimpse at an individual school’s culture, which is a unique opportunity for students of other schools and alumni. With that in mind, we’ve gathered some of our most unforgettable school culture festival episodes. Take a peek at the spirit of these titles!

###Episode 7 (Azumanga Daioh)

The aforementioned plight of every Japanese anime class ever is broken with this episode. Chiyo, as class president, institutes a suggestion box to figure out their theme. The result is unequivocally a unique event: a stuffed animal exhibition! Even though there’s another culture festival in Episode 16, this one simultaneously exemplified and defied the trope wondrously.

###Episode 2 (Maid-Sama!)

The class president at this formerly all-boys school has a secret, and with this crazy culture festival gone awry, it may get leaked! Not only is Misaki trying to make sure the festival goes off without a hitch, but also trying to make sure the boys in her class don’t ruin everything they’ve worked for. Luckily, she’s had some experience in a café, and has a pretty attractive guy who’s interested in helping her out.

###Episode 12 (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU)

Though technically, the festival goes from Episodes 11 through 13, a good chunk of the action happens right smack in the middle. Hachiman’s job is to capture the festival on film and, to his little sister’s surprise, actually tries at it. Meanwhile, jealousy constructs quite the finale as Hachiman attempts to help Minami… but at what cost? This show certainly delves deeper than its name, and will get your brain wheels turning as it asks many a philosophical question regarding society.

###Episode 19 (Persona 4: The Animation)

With shadows and killers, it’s easy to forget that these characters also live normal lives. For their annual cultural festival, Yu’s class will be putting together a group-dating café. Meanwhile, Yosuke signed up all the girls in their group for a beauty pageant. Comedy ensues with all the boys ending up participating in a drag beauty pageant (revenge from the girls), and the café is a bust. This episode takes the cake for the best revenge.

###Episode 9 (RIN-NE)

Despite playing in a supernatural world of shinigami, demons, and restless ghosts, RIN-NE remains faithful to the slice-of-life school story formula. Therefore, Rinne, Sakura, and Jumonji still get to enjoy a school festival episode, complete with a maid café AND a school play. Of course, being a Rumiko Takashi tale, this adventure comes with its own twist, including a possessed wig and a pumpkin-headed specter.

###Episode 11 (Tanaka-kun Is Always Listless)

Despite Tanaka-kun’s attempts not to be noticed for his class’s festival event, he lands a starring role as one of the ghosts in their haunted house! He’s a surprisingly frightening white ghost in a well, whereas Ohta gets to enjoy another facet of the Culture Fest: the sweets. So many sweets. This episode takes the cake for the best unintentional scare:

###Episode 7 (Beautiful Bones -Sakurako’s Investigation-

It may not be your average school festival episode, but not much about Sakurako - show or character - is very typical. Shotaro’s school resembles the quintessential culture fest, but he and Sakurako don’t play games or eat sweets, they go through an old office and sort bones! At least that’s… educational!

###Episode 6 (K-On! Season 1)

The school festival the light music club was preparing for is underway! However, Yui - who was going to sing - lost her voice! Mio’s nerves about being the main visual on stage threaten to ruin the entire production. Lucky for her, she’s got amazing friends in the club, and they’re with her - no matter what.

###Join In On the Fun!
Between the food tents, cafes, haunted houses, and the club and athletic events, the school cultural festival is a great expression of Japanese culture and student hard work. What gets you in the festival spirit? Which anime cultural festival would YOU want to participate in? Let us know via Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Google+!

###TUESDAY NEW RELEASES: NON NON BIYORI REPEAT

###Non Non Biyori Repeat
Even though there are still only five students who attend the remote Asahigaoka Branch School, each one of the girls already has a lifetime of wonderful experiences in the carefree Japanese countryside. Some memories may belong to just one person, like Hotaru’s recollections of her first day in Asahigaoka before she’d had a chance to meet her new friends. Other memories bring an otherwise sleepy town to life for Komari, Natsumi, Renge, or even Suguru. From daily life in school, to unforgettable holiday festivities, or even simple adventures like learning how to make okonomiyaki, new adventures are just waiting to be shared as we return to Asahigaoka in NON NON BIYORI REPEAT!
