The Land of Obscusion: The Home of Obscure Anime

This show definitely doesn’t give a good first impression… In fact, it gives an absolutely horrific first impression. Thankfully, that first episode has nothing to do with the rest of the show, since the rest is an anime that, I feel, deserves a second chance. It’s actually really fun to watch and definitely is different from most titles out there.

People, do give this show a chance by skipping the first episode and watching the actual good stuff. Enjoy!

Who doesn’t love Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Well, are you hardcore-enough of a fan to have watched this two-episode OVA that was only released in Japan? Yeah, it’s silly and the first episode in particular gets ridiculous, but it’s still way better than the absolute lowest this franchise has gone.

Enjoy!

The Manga DVD series of video productions were effectively the manga-equivalent of those video graphic novels we get occassionaly over here. Distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment, there are three Manga DVD productions and though I can’t talk about Manga DVD Sanctuary I can talk about the other two since I was able to get them from NicoNico Douga. And since today is Halloween, I found this Manga DVD to be appropriate:

There’s absolutely no chance of these ever being licensed, but it sure would be an interesting license, to say the least. Enjoy!

It’s the last Ring ni Kakero production I can review, as I am not going to review a vinyl album! It’s most-definitely for existing fans, though, due to a few factors. But if you’re a fan and you’re willing to either be spoiled in regard to the ending or you’re willing to stop early, then it’s worth checking out simply for the different cast.

And here’s my thoughts on the potential of more Ring ni Kakero 1 anime being made and possibly even announced at Jump Festa this year… Hey, the past two seasons were announced at the last two Jump Festas, so it could happen again.

Enjoy!

Go Nagai’s Violence Jack is probably his most controversial work ever, but here in North America it’s known mostly for its censored Manga dub VHS tapes, plus any who actually have seen Right Stuf/Critical Mass’ rare-as-hell uncut VHS tapes. Still, are these OVA any good? Well, the first one suffers a bit from being only half as long as the other two, but it still isn’t bad. It’s best to treat this as the start of an OVA series and not as a stand-alone product, like it was originally released.

Enjoy!

The second Violence Jack OVA is truly representative of a title that has the word “violence” in it. Also, the OVA goes into near-hentai territory a couple of times, which certainly explains why Right Stuf had to create the Critical Mass label for their uncut VHS release. Still, it’s actually a really good anime, but the subject matter can really rub people the wrong way.

Enjoy!

Thanksgiving and Black Friday weekend delayed me watching the last Violence Jack OVA. Hell’s Wind is easily the most action-packed of the Jack animes, and is also the most Mad Max-esque of them all. While Evil Town has the better story, it just can’t beat Hell’s Wind’s action.

Well, that’s review #49… Not only that, but this Thrusday will be December 1, which marks the one-year anniversary of The Land of Obscusion! Yes, review #50 will be on my one-year anniversary, and I can promise that it will be a doozy of an anime.

Enjoy!

It’s time for Review #50, on the One-Year Anniversary of The Land of Obscusion’s debut! And, boy, is this show bad. It had hints of a good show in it, but it’s produced so horribly that it truly is one of the worst anime I have ever seen… Yet I feel that it should still be watched, if only to show people just how bad things can truly get.

Enjoy, and here’s to another great year!

Jump Festa this weekend with be celebrating the 35th Anniversary of one of the longest-running mangas of all time: Kochikame! Commonly called Japan’s Simpsons, Kochikame naturally has had an anime adaptation, and that applies to movies as well. So, in my way of celebration, here’s Ryo-san’s very first anime movie!

Enjoy, and Happy 35th Anniversary, Kochikame!

Samurai Shodown is probably SNK’s second-most well known franchise, behind only King of Fighters, and Nakoruru is probably SamSho’s second-most well known character, behind only Haohmaru. That being said, Nakoruru does have an OVA all to herself, and if you think being a unfinished OVA series is enough of an identity, how about being directed by a hentai director and having character designs by Yasuomi Umetsu?

Enjoy!

The New Year is coming up, so I decided to end this year with a little fun. Let’s say that I had my own anime licensing company… What would I license? Well, here are twelve animes I would licese!

Twelve Animes I Would License (Or How to Kill an Anime Licensor in 12 Steps or Less):

Enjoy, and Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a happy New Year… But unfortunately Mr. Hisao Maki, the younger brother of Ashita no Joe’s Ikki Kajiwara, didn’t get to celebrate long after as he passed away this January 2. In his honor I decided to review the boxing anime based on a story he helped create; a boxing anime that was released in North America by a hentai licensor, but without the hentai licensor’s name!

Enjoy!

All this talk about those new Berserk movies is cool and all, but let’s forget about the other awesome fantasy epic that starts with a “B”. Bastard!! is truly an underrated series here in North America, and though there are some problems with the R1 DVD release, that shouldn’t keep you from checking out the awesome 6-episode OVA adaption.

Enjoy!

I commented on one or two of your post already. Been reading for awhile now man, keep it up.

Though Bastard!! is the only anime adaptation of a Kazushi Hagiwara manga, mainly due to a lack of choices, it isn’t the only Hagiwara anime out there. Behold a 4-episode OVA that is so fun and crazy that it can only be the product of Kazushi Hagiwara & Satoru Akahori! And to believe that AN Entertainment actually considered licensing this!

Enjoy, and thanks for the great comments!

In North America animes are meant to be licensed and released, but sometimes animes are licensed but never released. It’s rare and it sucks, but it does happen… And I’ve listed down “twelve” animes that fit this criteria.

Twelve Anime Licenses That Never Were But Should Have:

Just a note: I purposefully left out Gosick, Nichijou, & Turn-A Gundam mainly because they are very recent and anything could happen with those titles. Enjoy!

In the very first month of the blog I reviewed the 1996 B’t X TV anime series. Well, I finally decided to re-watch the 1997 sequel OVA to B’t X, and it still is just as good as I remember it being, even with the added effect of me being able to compare it to the original manga. Though I can understand ADV dropping their 2002 license of B’t X so that they could focus on Saint Seiya, but at the same time it’s a great shame that such a solid anime series has never been given a proper and complete release in North America.

Enjoy!

http://www.jmanga.com is definitely one of the most interesting places to go to when it comes to manga, mainly due to their eclectic catalog. One of these is a 4-volume manga by Takao Saito, the creator of Golgo 13! But unlike some of the other Saito manga’s over at JManga, which are episodic adventures like those of Duke Togo’s, this title is about a scientifically-altered man who becomes a giant and acts as the reincarnation of God! Great fun, especially if you like kaiju movies.

Enjoy!

Leap Day onlycomes around once every 4 years, so I can’t pass up the opportunity to get a review out on this rare day. Anyway, Kaoru Shintani should be a somewhat known name in anime & manga fandom due to his dogfighting title Area 88, but in the late-80s he did a short manga about rally racing that was then adapted into a two-episode OVA in 1990. The name alone will catch your interest, but the subject matter will keep your interest until the end.

Enjoy!

I love being able to go back and finally finish a series or titles that I was unable to finish up and fully review at one point. Case in point: Fuuma no Kojirou: Yasha-hen was one of my earliest reviews, and it remains one of my most-viewed reviews ever. Now I’ve finally been able to watch the second part of the Kojirou saga, so here it is:

Enjoy, & naturally up next is the last part of the Kojirou anime!
