Anime Sols’ Dororo Crowdfunding Streaming Campaign Reaches Goal

posted on 2014-10-03 02:00 EDT

Site will stream 1st 13 episodes of 26-episode black-and-white TV series

Anime Sols’ crowdfunding campaign to stream the first half of Osamu Tezuka’s Dororo television anime series has met its goal of US$2,700. Anime Sols is already streaming the first three episodes of the series, and the crowdfunding campaign will allow Anime Sols to stream the first 13 episodes.

Dororo is a 26-episode black-and-white anime series produced in 1969. Tezuka Productions describes the story:

The setting is the middle of the Muromachi Period, during the 1470s after the Wars of Onin and Bunmei. The story begins in the Noto Peninsula of the Hokuriku District. The main character (Hyakkimaru), who lacks as much as 48 body parts, obtains a fake body and eliminates 48 monsters that were made from his body to retrieve his missing body parts.

The story is based on Tezuka’s original 1967 Dororo manga series. Vertical released the manga in a collected volume in 2012. A live-action film adaptation starring Kou Shibasaki and Satoshi Tsumabuki premiered in Japan in 2007.

Site funding second half of 1969 black-and-white TV series

Anime Sols announced on its official Twitter account that it launched two new crowdfunding campaigns to stream the second part of Osamu Tezuka’s Dororo and Tatsunoko Production’s Belfy and Lillabit (The Littl’ Bits) anime series on Monday.

Both campaigns have a funding goal of US$2,700, and Anime Sols will stream the episodes to registered members once the goals are reached.

Dororo is a 26-episode black-and-white anime series produced in 1969. Anime Sols funded the first 13 episodes on October 2, after launching the campaign in July.

Belfy and Lillabit is a 26-episode anime produced in 1980. Anime Sols’ crowdfunding campaign will fund the first 13 episodes. Tatsunoko Production describes the story:

An imaginary Lilliputian society hidden in the deep forest is depicted in this new series. Belfy is a witty, rompish girl who lost her parents in her infancy and lives with her uncle, who is the only doctor in the woods. Though he is an openhearted and generous man, his habit of drunkenness often bothers Belfy, who does not mince her words in trying to keep him on the right track. Meanwhile Belfy gets on well with Lillibit, a lively boy with a strong streak of curiosity. The two friends have heart-warming adventures as they associate with animals and other aspects of nature around their forest homeland. The tales of this tiny community also develop numerous aspects of human relations in a wholesome manner.

The Saban-produced English version was broadcast in North America as The Lil’bits on Nick Jr. in the early '90s.

Anime Sols announced in July that it would launch six other anime crowdfunding campaigns besides Belfy and Lillabit: Goku’s Grand Adventure (Goku no Daibōken), Space Ace, Time Bokan, The Warrior, Gordian (Toshi Gordian), Temple the Balloonist, The Amazing Three, and Kerokko Demetan. However, Anime Sol’s current campaigns have not exceeded 12 percent of funding progress thus far.

Email just received.

Hey everyone!

This is Sam Pinansky (founder of anime sols…). I bet you noticed that we’re shutting down next month, which is sad, and maybe are a little upset that we only subtitled half of Dororo.

But here’s a little inside information for you: It won’t be long until all of Dororo will be legally available in english. Just not through anime sols. Your support for the first half was enough to show that support is out there for the show.

Thanks,
Sam P.

(for those of you who tried to pledge over the last few weeks, yes, I had shut off credit card processing since we knew we were closing down. I couldn’t have the goal succeed and then have the site be shut down soon afterwards. Sorry about that, but I didn’t want to cause a panic by announcing before we had shipped out all the support packages people had pledged for.)

[quote]Because the LLP partnership will disappear and any remaining stock would
be counted as capital that would have to be split up among the
partners, counted as ‘income’ and thus taxable. In order to avoid that
significant cost to the partners we will destroy them beforehand.

Thanks, income tax, for forcing this to happen. At least they’re not forced to bury them in the desert… :frowning:
