spoiler

Petralka seems to be in a funk and has run away. Everyone is sent out to search for her. But Shinichi seems to know just where she is and sure enough, he finds her there, asleep. Unfortunately, Galius followed him and now shakes Petralka awake. He tells her to come back with him and Petralka claims that she was just taking a break as she climbs out of the box that she was hiding in.

Shinichi asks if Petralka can take the day off, but Galius says that it’s impossible; she has just too many duties to see to. Galius follows Petralka out and Shinichi looks in the box she was in. She was reading manga! LOL Back at home, it seems that Myucel has forgotten how to make anything other than omelets with ketchup portraits, complete with the charm to make them taste good. But Shinichi is still thinking about Petralka. The girl could probably use a nice vacation. Even rulers can fall into a rut every now and then.

The next day, Petralka has refused to do any work and has locked herself in her room. Shinichi tells the others what is wrong with Petralka and why she has locked herself away. Minori tells everyone to leave Petralka in Shinichi’s hands. But Galius reminds Shinichi that he is Petralka’s cousin and second in line for the throne. He tells Shinichi that her parents were murdered over the right of succession and that the murderers were his parents. Galius tells Shinichi that the siblings served each other poison and died together. Then the old Emperor died from grief, leaving Petralka as Empress.

Galius tells Shinichi that Petralka also knows the story and that is why she works so hard to be perfect. Galius admits that they all take advantage of that. It was nice to see Galius acting so human for once. Shinichi promises to help, but he asks for one thing in return. He wants everything left to him with no interference. Galius agrees, and Shinichi persuades Petralka to let him into her room.

There are video games, anime, manga, and snacks scattered over the floor, and Petralka tells Shinichi that she is never leaving her room again. She knows all about hikikomori and has decided to be one. She says that she will spend all her time now watching anime and reading manga. Shinichi plays along and only gives her a score of 50 out of a 100, saying that he will teach her to be a true hikikomori.

The first problem is her room – it’s too big. Everything needs to be within reach, so he sets up a corner of the room to be her living quarters. Instead of having the opposite effect, Petralka is very happy with the arrangement. Shinichi tells her to leave it all to him. He even gives Petralka a few hikikomori laws to follow. LOL Galius has been standing guard outside of her room and Minori takes a peek inside. She tells Galius there may be some bad news. Minori also tells Myucel that Shinichi is spending the night with Petralka and that didn’t go over too well either. LOL

Petralka is really getting into her new lifestyle. She never felt so free. But right now, she wants to take a bath. They sneak out of her room, but Shinichi explains that hikikomori rarely bathe. I liked the way Shinichi distracted the guards. The bath feels heavenly to Petralka and she tells Shinichi to join her, but he knows it would all kinds of trouble if he did. However, it doesn’t stop him from thinking about it! LOL

Petralka feels better after her bath, but they need to get back to her room, and that means getting past the guards again. As they pause outside the guardroom, they overhear the two guards talking. They are really concerned about Petralka. Shinichi distracts them again, and they make it safely back to Petralka’s room. They later talk more about hikikomori and Petralka asks how Shinichi became one. He had confessed to a childhood friend and got rejected. Embarrassment caused him to skip school and stay home a few days and it just got harder to go outside after that. Before long he couldn’t even face his family and just stayed in his room.

Petralka soon realizes that hikikomori run away from life, as Shinichi tells her that the door to the outside world gets heavier and heavier. It gets to a point where you can’t open the door at all, at least not without help. Petralka rethinks things and asks Shinichi if she’s a failure as an Empress. She abandoned her duties and caused trouble for everyone. She says that she’s selfish and takes things out on others. Shinichi says that he doesn’t know what it’s like to be an Empress, but to him, she’s fine the way she is.

When Shinichi wakes up the next morning, Petralka is gone. He sees her standing in front of the door and she admits that it is heavy – especially with having to face everyone out there. However, she finds the resolve to open the door on her own and step out of her room. Galius and Zaharl bow and welcome her back. I think she was pleased to see them, but she’s all business as she apologizes and goes back to work. Shinichi just smiles after her. He knew she would snap out of it on her own. Galius turns back briefly and bows to Shinichi before catching up to Petralka and Zaharl.

Back at Shinichi’s house, everyone is starving! Ever since Myucel heard that Shinichi was spending the night with Petralka, she hasn’t been herself. She stirs non-existent food in an empty pot and repeatedly says “I’m sorry. Please wait a little longer.” And that is all she can say. Minori can’t wait for Shinichi to return! LOL

It’s nice to see that Myucel is helping out with teaching the class now. Petralka has returned to her duties and Galius comes to thank Shinichi, in any way that is in his power to do so. Minori tells Shinichi that it’s his chance! LOL While Minori sinks into her fantasy, Shinichi asks Galius if there is a good vacation spot nearby. Both he and Minori need to use up their vacation time. Galius offers them the use of the Imperial Villa that is outside of the city. Minori thanks Galius by giving him the book she had once loaned to him. And he’s happy to take it! LOL Minori invites Myucel to go as well and Shinichi is ecstatic that this just turned into the “swimsuit episode”!

The weather is beautiful as is the lake. Shinichi enjoys the beautiful scenery – Minori, Elbia, and Myucel in their swimsuits! LOL He tells Minori that he “might have been born for just for this day”. Well, I’m glad he’s happy. Meanwhile, Petralka is hard at work, but intends to go to the villa as well. I wonder if Shinichi is expecting her. It’s funny that the Empress has the smartest scholars in the kingdom working on her swimsuit. Maybe she should include a seamstress? LOL The old men scholars seem to be having a hard time choosing a style for her.

Shinichi is in heaven again when Minori asks him to put oil on her back. He wonders if he’s taking the “Minori route” and even asks her if she has a boyfriend. She doesn’t and he thinks she’d be more popular, until she tells him to stop talking to her breasts. LOL Myucel has never been on a vacation, but she did study all the “swimsuit episodes” that Shinichi told her about. Shinichi is sure she’s ready to play then, but she still seems a little stiff and unsure once she’s in the water. I don’t think it’s quite working for Shinichi either.

The scholars are still debating over Petralka’s swimsuit. One sketches, as one opts for modesty, and another wants a subdued color, but perhaps with a little white on the chest area. Of course the sketch turns out to be the school swimsuit that they all voted down in the first round of discussion - and the second. One of those scholars is definitely a lolicon! LOL Back on the beach, Elbia enjoys her first rice ball. I can see Myucel is thinking about the grain of rice on the cheek thing. But they are interrupted by a student, Roic, and he seems pretty frantic. He tells the group that “they” are going to kill Romilda!

Roic calms down and tells his story. Minori is always prepared! She thinks that “they” might be what remains of the group that had attacked the school. Minori thinks that they are after Shinichi and that they will have to escape. And of course they will save Romilda as well. Roic gives a description and Elbia draws a quick sketch, but no one recognizes the race, let alone the face, if that is a face. LOL Minori promises to protect everyone and Myucel says that she wants to help as well. Elbia and Roic offer their services too, and Minori thanks everyone, saying that they will all work together. But Shinichi doesn’t want anyone to sacrifice themselves for him and makes them promise that no one dies.

Elbia finds the creatures and I wonder if they are just ordinary people in camouflage. Between Elbia, Myucel and Roic, the creatures are subdued. Romilda is found and she’s fast asleep. But with everyone being distracted by her, the creatures get a chance to run away and Elbia pursues them. Myucel follows and Shinichi goes after the both of them. Elbia fall into a trap and Myucel continues after the creatures. She gets them in a trap, but she only captures two, and the third one gets her.

Shinichi comes running, but Myucel tells him to stay back. All he can think of is the time she was stabbed and he won’t let something like that happen again. He goes to attack the creature, but Minori is close behind and fires a shot into the air. Everyone freeze and Minori takes charge. She tells the creature holding Myucel to take off the “ghillie suit”. It was camouflage! And the guy is a member of the SDF. Minori demands an explanation, still holding the gun on him.

Myucel runs to Shinichi and asks him why he tried to save her. He tells her that he didn’t want her to get hurt and she says the same thing about him. It’s a very sweet moment. But this is still the swimsuit episode, so this is the moment that Myucel loses her top. Myucel freezes and Shinichi stares. And stares. And stares. In fact, everyone is staring. LOL It’s dead silent and Shinichi starts to say that it was an accident, but that she has a nice “pair”. Myucel finally unfreezes and screams, but her magic comes out and Shinichi is the target! LOL

Back on the beach, things are beginning to return to normal. The three SDF guys were there to guard them, but no one told Minori. She asks them why they ran instead of revealing themselves. Then she notices the camera. Minori checks it and sees pictures of all the girls in their swimsuits. She asks for an explanation and one guy mentions her “huge melons”, but before he can finish, the angry Minori calls them “peeping toms” and destroys the camera. The men apologize and Minori says that it’s okay – they just need to feel a lot of pain. LOL As she cracks her knuckles, the men cringe. Then only their screams can be heard.

It’s time for Petralka to take a break and she commands that her swimsuit be brought to her. But the scholars are still debating on a style. They finally settle on the school swimsuit. LOL Once Petralka has it on, it looks like she may not like it and the head scholar quickly blames the others for the decision. But Petralka actually does like it, and Zaharl and Galius also note their own approval of it. So, now the head scholar says that it was all his idea. LOL And the head scholar was made Chairman for the rest of his days!

Seeing Minori dressed as a maid was pretty funny. But Matoba brings the news that footage of the soccer game has been leaked to the internet in their world and could cause all kinds of problems. However, Shinichi has a plan. Why not just say it’s a movie?

They will start with a “making of” documentary. Minori wants to be the director. This should be good! LOL And it is. With bits and pieces from other anime, a little bit of real magic, and Petralka as a magical girl, they’re off to a good start. Shinichi looks like he’s in heaven too! LOL

Shinichi’s students get involved in the “school project”, and they even find a real dragon to use, but thanks to Minori, that didn’t work out too well. Shinichi walks in on Myucel changing and I love the way he covers his eyes, without really covering them at all. LOL

They’ve called off the shoot and Shinichi is confused, but the topless Elbia thinks it’s a perfect opportunity to draw Shinichi in the nude, and she pulls his pants off. Then a half naked Petralka wants Shinichi’s help, and there is poor Shinichi still trying to not cover his eyes, so he can enjoy all this. But the last straw is when Myucel drops her shirt and is completely naked.

I also just noticed that they are calling the feature “Magical Madoka”, which is hysterical. And it’s sweet too that Shinichi partly did this for Petralka to have fun and forget that she’s an Empress for a while. It was funny too that Minori had to explain the difference between a rip-off and an homage to “Rental Madoka”. But a rip-off of that and many other shows seems to be the intent in order to get the project canceled.

It’s time for the scene with the fake dragon. Unfortunately, Luna reports that there is a real dragon’s nest in the area and of course Minori is going to mess things up again with her antiperspirant. When it’s time for the fake dragon to appear, it’s a real one instead. Chaos ensues, but Petralka is still under the impression that this dragon is a fake, and Luna’s dragon tamer skills are useless, thanks to Minori. Galius cancels the shoot and all efforts are put in to fighting the dragon.

The SDF goes charging in, but of course humans from another world know nothing about dragons in this world. The natives look on in shock as the SDF attacks the dragon. Thankfully, the dragon survives and flies off. Petralka is still impressed by all these fake special effects. No one thought to tell her about the dangerous situation. Well, somehow, the shooting finally gets finished.

Petralka had a lot of fun and thanks Shinichi for a wonderful experience. As thank, Petralka kisses Shinichi on the cheek, with “no other meaning behind it”. Yeah, right! LOL Several days later, a special screening of “Puella Magi Magical Madoka the Movie” is held for everyone. Petralka is just too cute in the movie and hates being seen as such. She wants the screening stopped immediately and the movie sealed away! LOL Because of her embarrassment, the screening is canceled, but a few clips were still leaked to the public in Japan, and the production got shelved for having too many copyright infringements, which is just the result they wanted. So, everything worked out in the end, but I’m not so sure Petralka will ever recover. LOL

Episode 11 –

Matoba praises Shinichi for a job well done, not only with the leaked videos, but in general. Shinichi is pleased, but I still don’t trust Matoba. I’m just not sure what these guys are up to. Shinichi’s next delivery gets screwed up again too. Still, Shinichi is so happy with Matoba’s compliment that Shinichi thanks Myucel for her help as well.

Anime, manga, and games are becoming so popular that the students are fighting over the small number of copies that are sent from Japan. And the fights seem to be overflowing to the adults as well. This is affecting work. Shinichi asks Minori to get her superiors to increase the number of copies being sent.

One of Shinichi’s students is translating light novels into the native language and Edward is really over working himself. Shinichi takes his concerns straight to Matoba, telling him they need more copies of things. But this increase in demand only pleases Matoba more, saying that the native hunger for Japanese culture is having a negative effect on daily life. This is what they were aiming for! I knew it!

It finally dawns on Shinichi as well. They are invaders! Shinichi understands it all now and feels horrible. And he’s angry too! They are destroying the native Eldant culture. Matoba threatens Shinichi too, saying that if anyone interferes, they will be disposed of. And Shinichi was chosen just because he was so disposable if this cultural invasion didn’t work. Shinichi just falls to the floor with this truth and Minori can’t even bring herself to look at him.

Minori later fills Shinichi in on the details and why they are doing all this. Shinichi just feels worse. Minori also tells Shinichi that Matoba’s threat is a true one. If Shinichi tries to do anything now, he will just disappear. When Petralka praises Shinichi for introducing them to otaku culture, Shinichi feels just awful and it shows. As she goes on and on, Shinichi can’t take it anymore and stops her. Petralka is concerned, but Shinichi knows he can’t say anything.

Shinichi takes to his bed, locking himself in his room, and Matoba tells Minori that they may have to replace him. But Minori protests and even Matoba admits that he’s fond of Shinichi. He talks to Shinichi through the door and tells him that he must continue with his work. When he finally leaves his room, Shinichi sees what Myucel has done and apologizes to her for making her worry.

Shinichi tells Myucel that he is an invader and it would have been better if he had never come to Eldant. This just confuses Myucel. But she knows her master is kind and thanks him for teaching her things she would never have gotten to learn without him. She makes Shinichi sees the good points of what he’s done. Myucel begins to cry and begs Shinichi to stay with them. Shinichi appreciates it and promises to do what he can. He’s going to try and undo some of the damage he’s done.

Matoba is concerned when Shinichi requests a formal audience with Petralka, but Shinichi tells him that he has a brilliant plan to further the spread of otaku culture. When he sees Petralka, he suggests they make their own manga and anime. Matoba does not look pleased. Shinichi elaborates on the plan and says that they won’t have to rely on Japan if they produce their own supplies. Matoba interrupts him and Shinichi talks him down. If Matoba disagrees now, he will expose the master plan of invasion.

Matoba just tells Shinichi that he’s exceeding his authority, but Shinichi reminds him that the authority belongs to Eldant. Shinichi shows Petralka Elbia’s drawings and Edward’s light novel as proof that they can do it, if they put their minds to it. Petralka approves, praising Shinichi. He did it! Everyone in the room applauds. Minori looks worried and Matoba is expressionless. However, his eyes convey everything that he can’t say. It looks like Shinichi is in big trouble!

Episode 11 was simultaneously the best and worst episode of this series. It gave us a development, but the way that it did it created a set up so cliche and obvious that anyone can see exactly where it is likely to go. There was no reason to actually tell the main character the main idea…

I’m hoping that there will be a twist, that the main dude “underestimated the mind of a bureaucrat”.

Episode 12 –

spoiler

Soldiers sneak into Shinichi’s bedroom only to find a maid in his bed instead. Then the lights go on and they are faced with more maids. LOL The combat maids quickly subdue the soldiers. JSDF assassins are no match against magic! This move against Shinichi was predicted and the maids are Petralka’s personal guard. Sadly, Minori murmurs that the assassination might have been her job. But I wonder if she would have carried out those orders.

Matoba has an audience with Petralka and apologizes, denying all knowledge of the incident. The attempt on Shinichi must have been carried out by a group of radicals – yeah, that’s it, radicals! Matoba has his excuse well prepared and delivers it to Petralka all neatly tied up in a big fluffy bow. Matoba also apologizes to Shinichi and says that the “instigators” were returned to Japan for punishment - also very convenient. Does anyone actually believe this idiot?

Matoba departs the palace and everyone knows that Shinichi still isn’t safe. More attempts on his life will likely happen. Not even Minori believed Matoba when she questioned him. Well, at least Shinichi got to keep all the maids. LOL And these personal bodyguards go everywhere with him! I liked Minori’s reaction to seeing them in the classroom. The maids are even circled around Shinichi’s bed at night – no wonder he sleeps with a smile on his face! LOL

Eventually, things are peaceful enough that Petralka recalls her guards. Or she just could have just been a little jealous. Even Shinichi’s ordered materials for his lessons are coming in perfect now. Things are too complacent at the moment. If Matoba is going to strike again, now would be a good time. Everyone has been lulled into a false sense of safety. Even Petralka is bored with how normal her days have gotten. But an explosion changes that.

There was an attack on the north wall of the palace and Bahailam crests were found. I’m sure Matoba is involved in this. Petralka thinks so as well. She calls Myucel to make sure everything is all right, but Myucel can see that the school is on fire from the window. Petralka tells Myucel that she will send a squad over, but the call is interrupted by another report that the Central Square has been attacked too. Myucel looks out the window again and sees Shinichi running towards the burning school.

Shinichi has his own priorities. He has to save the rare Comptiql’s October issue! Minori overhears Matoba’s plan for eliminating Shinichi in “an unfortunate accident”. It looks like she is going back to help him, but she’s detained by a couple of soldiers. With her skills, she could take them, but Matoba warns her that she could disappear as well, being in the same position as Shinichi. Myucel, Elbia, and Brooke are on their way to help Shinichi.

Meanwhile, he arrives at the school to find the entire building in flames. Pulling out his “weapon” – a pair of scissors a la Severing Crime Edge – he runs into the burning building. He heads to the library and finds the yet to be burned special issue. However, it’s placed just a little too conveniently out in the open – this has to be a trap! Think Shinichi! He steps into the room, and is immediately grabbed and chloroformed by a couple of soldiers. They lay him next to the box that contains the special rare issue, saying that it’s for Japan. The soldiers leave the library, closing the door behind them.

Myucel, Elbia, and Brooke arrive at the school and Myucel knows that Shinichi must be in the library on the second floor. However, they need to find a way in. Brooke breaks through a wall and Myucel instructs him to wait beneath the library window before she and Elbia rush into the burning school. The girls run right into the soldiers! Elbia fights them and tells Myucel to go on ahead. Myucel runs through a burning hallway to the library. She finds the unconscious Shinichi there, but can’t wake him up. As she shakes him, a bookcase behind them begins to fall towards them.

Myucel has saved them with magic, but how long can she keep that up? Shinichi is still unconscious and Myucel is determined not to let him die. She keeps begging him to wake up. Elbia also has her hands full with those soldiers and is finally knocked unconscious herself when she’s tasered by one of them. The library is completely engulfed in flames now, and Myucel is getting tired and losing her magic. Well, at least she will die with her master.

Elbia wakes up to a gun in her face. She prepares for the worst, but the soldier is struck from behind. It’s Minori! Yay! Myucel is at the last of her magic and resigning herself to death, she promises to follow Shinichi to heaven. But Minori and Elbia arrive just in the nick of time! Shinichi finally wakes up to find himself outside. As he slowly comes to, Myucel tells him how they escaped. But the school is destroyed. Unfortunately, Matoba shows up. He says that everything is ruined and that Eldant is sure to sever diplomatic ties. But, Shinichi sits up and wants to speak with Matoba’s superiors. He would like to continue working for AmuTec, but probably in a more honest way. I see that someone saved the two soldiers as well.

An interview is set up and Shinichi is told to return home. They’ve labeled him as mentally unstable and wish to treat him, but Shinichi knows better and thinks there may be another “unfortunate accident” planned for him. Well, that plan is scrapped and Shinichi is told that he can stay if he falls in with their master plan, and he’s reminded that he can be eliminated at any time. Shinichi just smiles. He was wired! Well, at least what passes for a wire in Eldant, and Petralka has heard every word.

Matoba informs his superior that he is speaking to the Empress of Eldant. The politician can’t believe it, for her Japanese is perfect. And that is thanks to Shinichi! Petralka enters the tent and takes over the conversation. She will allow the recent attempts on Shinichi’s life to be blamed on Bahailam, however, no such attempts are ever to be made again or she will cut all ties with Japan. Backed into a corner, the politician gives in and says that since Shinichi is doing such a wonderful job, there is no reason to have him return to Japan.

The school is under reconstruction and Myucel can’t wait for classes to begin again. Myucel also asks Shinichi if he knew all this would happen. He says that he knew it was always a possibility and was afraid, but he did it all for love. Did Myucel think she was getting a confession? LOL Shinichi loves his otaku culture and could not forgive the way his government was using it. He has no regrets and begins to tell Myucel something else – a confession? - when they are interrupted by Elbia. Nice timing! LOL It’s time to get to the castle.

I wish Shinichi had kept that tee shirt on, but he changed into his suit. At the castle, he runs into Matoba. He’s under guard by the maids, but still holds his same position. Shinichi thought he’d been demoted and sent back to Japan. But I guess it’s better to deal with the devil you know, rather than a new one. Matoba lets Shinichi know that he’s safe – for now. And now they have Shinichi backed into a corner by controlling his funding. Politics! Geez!

They finally appear before Petralka and Shinichi thanks her for everything. The way she speaks to Shinichi with such familiarity delivers a subtle warning to Matoba. Shinichi tries to play along and really embarrasses her. LOL The school reopens and things return to normal. But it looks like Shinichi’s students are getting smarter than him! And thus another wonderful anime ends. I’d love for this one to get another season too, but even if it doesn’t, I was very satisfied with it.

Finished this up tonight.

That was actually rather fun!
Not sure if I’d want to pick it up or not once it’s released, but it was fun to watch once through.

This was great while waiting for Log Horizon 2 and a hopeful second season of NGNL.

It has the nice twist of the government involvement and a refreshing look at what happens when you alter another world via influence that Log Horizon had. Good to see shows that don’t just turn the “visitor” into a puppet of the new environment but showing the psychology that people carry their own baggage with them and how it can affect their new surroundings and not just some political butt-kisser trying to fit in.

Watched the first episode on VOD as it came this week, and was so hooked I just finished the series after having a nap sometime after episode 9.

spoiler

The harem is there for a bit of attention but also brings in everything it should for the “culture” aspect to not be too much of any one thing. I really hope for a season 2, so that more can develop and see the stupid Earthling freak out in their religious nonsense when off-worlders come and threaten their sedate and complacent lives knowing they are the only people in the world, blahblah…

But that could cause all kinds of the normal “aliens” troubles, so just mostly hoping a dragon crosses over and goes on a rampage because everyone is wearing deodorant and nasty perfumes and such. Just to see the cover-up be blown wide open and a government finally getting its comeuppance. Got to hope for it in the fiction because it never happens in the real world!

Also want to see lots more changes in the world of the Eldant Empire to see how people treat each other and work ethics.

I fear, like Shingu, the story has told all it was intended to tell and there will be no more, which is sad when you could have much more of an interesting world and let the world itself grow to be the character rather than the pet protagonist.

Q. any news on an Outbreak Company release?

A. Looking like a January release.

Watched Ep. 1 on free VOD, where it started 8/7. Laughed out loud several times. Predictable, but funny.

Was the dubbed TAN trailer for this one already posted elsewhere?
