School-Live! / Gakkō Gurashi!

Episode 11 –

Spoiler

So, it seems that Yuki gets some of her memories back just as the zombies invade the school and break through the barricades. She even manages to save Miki from them. Kurumi isn’t doing well at all and only Yuri is with her. Yuri looks as if she’s about to have some kind of breakdown. A bolt of lightning takes out the electricity and the school is enveloped in darkness.

Miki is still determined to get back to the basement and retrieve the medicine that might help Kurumi – and perhaps Taromaru as well. After an encounter with a zombie, Miki gains a new respect for Kurumi and her skill with the shovel. Miki may never be able to handle them as well as Kurumi does. Yuri considers her promise to Kurumi, but may not be able to kill her. She seems to be freaking out a bit too.

On the roof, the damaged generator explodes and the zombies carry the fire to the garden, burning it all down. The girls just lost their fresh food source and may lose the school as well. Cornered by zombies, Miki sacrifices her CD player, the only thing she has left of her friend. Yuri also remembers a conversation she had with Kurumi about the zombies being aware. It was bothering Kurumi to think they might be and reminds Yuri of her promise. Yuri now unwraps the knife and holds it over Kurumi. As determined as she is, I don’t think she can do it.

Miki has made it to the basement and follows a trail of blood to a flooded part of the basement. Shovel at the ready, she begins to wade through the water, only to come face to face with Megu-nee. Going back to the other room and with a partial metal gate between them, Miki introduces herself to Megu-nee and tells her about the other club members and how well they’re all doing. But when Megu-nee grabs her ankle, Miki puts her to rest. And it seems that Yuki felt that moment as well.

An alarm goes off and an automated warning is given as the basement switches to emergency power. All that noise is going to attract some unwanted visitors, I’m sure. And it does! Miki enters a room and doesn’t even know where to begin to look. However, she is drawn to a case with handprints. Megu-nee’s? Most likely. She opens the case and it is full of medical supplies, as well as the medicine for Kurumi. But the medicine is marked as “experimental”, so will it even work on Kurumi? I hope so!

Yuki has another memory flash and Miki has a wall of zombies coming at her in the basement. Trying a nearby door releases what looks to be Taromaru. As he runs off, Miki ducks inside and wonders about her next step. The room is very similar to the one she lived in at the mall and she wonders if she will end up dying here all alone. Yuri breaks down and cannot kill Kurumi. The zombies have broken into Miki’s hiding place and Yuki speaks with Megu-nee again. Yuki wants to go to her, but Megu-nee tells her to go to the broadcasting room. There, she can save Miki and everyone else too.

Yuki picks up a bat and leaves the club room. Megu-nee guides her and as Yuki stops for a rest, she gains another memory and cries. Megu-nee urges her to keep going and once outside “that” door, Yuki remembers Megu-nee’s death. As they talk on either side of the door, Yuki admits she’s been letting everyone else handle the “scary” things, but she can’t do that anymore. Megu-nee asks Yuki to remember her promise. They talk a little more and Megu-nee leaves. Yuki opens the door to try to follow her, but it’s just an empty corridor. Standing on the bloodstain that marked Megu-nee’s death, Yuki cries, finally able to accept her teacher’s death and mourn for her. The saddest part, was when she raised her head and said, “Bye-bye, Megu-nee” with the image of the cross on the roof and Megu-nee’s bloodstained ribbon blowing in the rain. Somehow, it gets untied by the wind and flies off. Yeah, I lost it too at that point. Well, I guess I needed a good cry anyway. I can only wonder what the next and final episode will bring.

It’s a good figure, my poor wallet keeps making faces at me. “What’d I ever do to you!” it keeps saying.

Whoever did the review hasn’t really seen the show.

IGN Anime Club OVA 2 - School-Live Spoiler Cast

Episode 12 –

Spoiler

I go into this episode with apprehension, wondering how all this will end. It’s still raining and more and more zombies are headed into the school building. Yuki encounters a group of zombies and it looks like they are feeding on one of their own. Yuki manages to get through them and keeps heading to the broadcasting room. But it looks like it may be too late for Miki. With a roomful of zombies and only one blocked exit, Miki has no place to run. She climbs to the top of a shelving unit, but that won’t save her for very long, as the zombies try to reach her. She sees an image of her friend, Kei, in the doorway and begins to cry.

More zombies block the door to the broadcasting room, and Yuki is captured. As more approach her to feed, Taromaru comes flying out of nowhere and attacks the zombies, giving Yuki a chance to get into the room. Yuki hesitates before closing the door. She can see that Taromaru has turned, but she captures him anyway. Does he remember her? Or was he just attacking for the sake of attacking? Yuki chooses to believe that he remembers her. She cries as she apologizes for the state he’s in and the fact that she can’t help him. Because of Taromaru, Yuki now believes that the zombies have memories too, which is why they have returned to the school.

Barricading Taromaru in a locker, Yuki turns on the equipment and makes an announcement that the school is closed and that all students should return home immediately. Is it really that simple? Yuki talks about how much she loves school. She remembers her friends and begins to cry again, but she keeps talking as the “students” start to leave the building. Miki has gotten out of the basement and has even retrieved her precious CD player. She runs back to where Kurumi is. Yuki finishes her broadcast.

Kurumi has been given the experimental vaccine and the next morning, she wakes up and seems to be fine. Everyone cries at seeing her alive and well. However, Taromaru is a different story. Although he was given the medicine, it seems to be too late for him. But at least he seems to be himself again and is happy to see Miki. They try to feed him, but it’s obvious that he’s not going to be around much longer. As Miki holds him in her lap and pets him, thanking him for all he’s done, he seems to smile at her, and then he dies. All the girls cry, as Miki sits there in shock. Another link to Kei is gone.

A small grave is dug for Taromaru near Megu-nee’s cross and Yuki puts her hat in with Taromaru because he always liked it. With some wise words, she then removes her neck tie and ties the ribbon onto Megu-nee’s cross. Miki finally cries as Yuki tells her to remember Taromaru’s final words – “Thank you,” and everyone hugs Miki. Soon after, a smaller cross with a red dog collar is next to Megu-nee’s and the girls are praying.

Well, life goes on and the remaining food is gathered together. I guess the emergency power didn’t last very long, because the refrigerators aren’t working. That is soon confirmed. There won’t be any water soon either. Perhaps it is time to leave. But where to go? Yuri has found a map in the manual and points out images that seem to represent shelters. Megu-nee had even marked one on the map for them to go to, but it’s far. As the girls try to decide where to go, it turns out that there might be another dog in the school and that is why Taromaru went to the basement in the first place.

They do finally decide to leave and Yuki suggests that they have a graduation ceremony first, and so, they do. Miki is chosen to give the farewell address. The whole graduation thing was very sweet and very touching and had me teary eyed. Once the ceremony is over, it seems that Yuri sees Megu-nee and I wonder about that. A memory, or did she really “see” her? Everyone piles in the car and they take off. They pass one lone zombie and from Miki’s reaction, I wonder if it’s Kei. Miki has left a note for her on the graduation blackboard, “I lived and it was all worthwhile.” Why the past tense?

Some other odd things. Although Yuki sent the student zombies home, as they drive through the town, it seems there are no zombies anywhere – at least not on the streets. Yuki’s hat has been dug up from Taromaru’s grave and it looks like there really may have been another dog at the school – either that or Taromaru is alive again. And the most important thing – the uniforms. Yuki remembers everything now and is no longer hiding from the truth, so why haven’t the uniforms changed? Very strange! I don’t know where the girls will end up on this road trip, but I hope it means another season and some answers to unsolved mysteries, such as how this all happened and why the teachers knew about it and were prepared for it.

During the end credits, there are some scenes from the show, but one kind of stood out, which was an image of the girls with their diplomas on a road with springtime cherry trees and Yuki waving to Megu-nee. Was that piece a dream? Yuki seems to wake up after that. I also wonder if that scene popped up because Megu-nee was always correcting Yuki to call her Sakura-sensei. And another mystery – after the end credits, a girl picks up one of Yuki’s letters. Another survivor? Now I hope there really is more of this excellent anime! Well, at some point anyway.

I’ve actually used a shovel as a weapon against snakes, oh the life in the country.
