Sugar: A Little Snow Fairy / Chicchana Yukitsukai Sugar

Ep. 19

Looks like Sugar’s flower is almost ready to bloom. Saga friends mention she has changed and for the better. They can thank Sugar for that. The bad news looks like Saga mom’s piano was sold. I was afraid that would happen when they showed the guy in the music store. I have a feeling it was Greta’s dad for her big birthday party. Poor Saga could see she was devastated to see the piano gone. I do wonder why her mom’s piano ended up for sale anyway.

Ep. 20

I was right it was Greta’s dad who bought the piano. Greta had no clue how badly she was hurting Saga with her bragging about it. At the end though think she understood what she had done. Looks like the next episode is going to be a sad one to.

Episode 19 -

spoiler

This was a nice “memories” episode and Sugar’s flower is about to bloom!
*
The kids help with the after festival clean-up and the girls even help Phil take some junk to his “lab”. Saga sees the birdcage that Sugar was once trapped in and she and Sugar laugh over the memory it brings. Then they see the rocket that Sugar used to save Mr. Turtle and it brings another memory. They even see the tank/vacuum experiment that evokes another pleasant memory.
*
Walking through the town, Saga sees a poster for “The Bear Pianist” that brings more nice memories and she wonders how Vincent is doing. At the warehouse, Saga and Sugar remember the incident of Sugar running away. The kids then stop for coffee and Greta walks in, looking very funny with an old spring hanging from her hair and even getting teased about her new “hair ornament”. As Saga tries to remove it for her, Greta invites everyone to her birthday party. Saga congratulates her and startles her by asking her what gift she’d like. The other kids note how different Saga is – more relaxed and calmer – and say it’s a change for the better.
*
I liked how Pepper surprised herself when she makes a nice breeze for the townspeople. Turmeric is still trying to make perfect clouds and a depressed Ginger tells Salt that “nobody understands what’s really in his heart”. A confused Salt innocently asks Ginger why she is always with him in that case. Ginger blushes and leaves, later making it rain.
*
Saga, wondering if she really has changed for the better, gets caught in the rain with no umbrella. She takes shelter and in a scene very similar to how the show started, Sugar is there playing her flute. However, this time, she is playing Saga’s mother’s special music as a gift to Saga and Saga wishes that Sugar will stay with her.
*
In the bath that night, Saga suggests they play a duet of her mother’s song the next day. But the next day, when they look in the music shop, there is only an empty space where the piano was. The piano is gone! I feel so bad for Saga!
*
I’m sure that the man in the shop earlier either bought it or rented it for Greta’s party. The man might even have been her father. But other than that, this was a nice recap episode of how the friendship between Saga and Sugar has grown, making them both the better for it.

Ahaha, the kingwolf has returned to theanimenetwork.com! And now for some fun trivia!

OK, you know the opening song for A Little Snow Fairy Sugar, “Sugar Baby Love”? This song is originally from a British band called The Rubettes. The song was released in 1974 and was the band’s biggest hit! The new Japanese version was recorded by Yoko Ishida who also performed songs for many other anime including Sailor Moon and Petit Princess Yucie.

I highly reccomend “Sugar Baby Love” by both The Rubettes and Yoko Ishida. They sound very similar but they do have different lyrics, probably because English and Japanese translations don’t always rhyme or make sense. Also, the original lyrics wouldn’t work with the anime anyway.

I hope you had fun learning something new about your favorite anime!

I love Sugar. Its one of my favorites and a huge guilty pleasure. It reminded me of the old Nick Jr Shows like Little Koala and Lil Bits. The ending is one of the most bittersweet endings I’ve ever seen.

Episode 20 -

spoiler

Salt and Pepper are discussing their flowers and the fact that they will bloom soon. Salt seems worried about something, but Sugar flies into them to tell them about Saga’s piano being gone. Saga is broken hearted, but trying to hide it and Sugar promised her that she’d find the piano. Salt and pepper offer to help and they start at the music shop. I liked how Sugar tried to get the shop owner’s attention, but couldn’t. When he held up the flute, she blew into it and the look on his face was priceless. He must think he has a self-playing flute!
*
As the fairies continue the search, Saga tells her girlfriends what happed to the piano. Once again, I’m reminded how much her friends resemble Salt and Pepper. Anne and Norma are concerned for her but Saga acts like she doesn’t care and turns the conversation to Greta’s birthday present. Her friends find her behavior odd and when the clock strikes four, they can see she gets a little depressed. This was the time she usually went to the music shop to play, but she tells them that nothing is wrong.
*
About the same time, the music shop assistant looks at his watch and then looks at the empty space where the piano stood. He sighs heavily and even he is a little depressed. Later, Saga’s grandmother tries to bring up the subject, but Saga leaves the room on the pretext of getting Greta’s present to show her. Saga goes to her room, saying that she will “just have to forget about it” but inside her room, she finds a dirty and exhausted Sugar that still promises to find her piano.
*
On the day of Greta’s birthday party, all the kids are gathered at her house. I see she takes after her father and it was nice to get some insight once again into the kind of life she has. Since they move so much, it must be hard for her to make friends, but the way she acts doesn’t help her either. The kids give Greta their gifts and I like how Phil thought his was the best. Then her father announces his present and swings open the doors to reveal Saga’s piano! I knew it! Saga is stunned to see it there. To think her piano ended up with Greta of all people! Greta arrogantly tells Saga that since she admires her new piano, she may come and play it anytime, but first challenges her to a piano competition. Greta sits at the piano and is about to place her fingers on the keys when Saga screams “no” and runs out crying, leaving her friends to explain to Greta.
*
Meanwhile, a cat has led the fairies to Greta’s house and they search it for the piano. Sugar finds it, but Greta is there too. She hears Greta say that she feels bad and that she doesn’t want to take Saga’s piano. She angrily bangs on the keys and then regrets it, wiping them off. Greta says “it’s not my fault” and that she “didn’t even know” before bringing the cover over the keys like she never intends to play. This is a nice side to Greta. She actually feels Saga’s pain and is sorry to be the cause of it. It makes her a little more human.
*
Saga walks dejectedly through the town, ignoring people and ends up at the music shop. As she stares through the window at the empty floor space, she remembers how her mother died. This is where I lost it too - but the toy piano really got me. The shop assistant joins her outside, saying that he thought that she wouldn’t come anymore. She tells him a little of her mother and says that when she “played her piano she was still her beside me”. She starts to cry and the assistant apologizes, but Saga gets angry and asks “why did you sell the piano?” and runs off. Saga remembers her mother’s funeral and Greta’s arrogance over the piano and she trips and falls. She has another memory of seeing a piano floating in the sky and perhaps a season fairy as her mother hugs her. She murmurs “Mommy”.
*
Sugar comes upon her at that point and tells her that they found the piano. She says that it’s at Greta’s house and that Greta seemed sad about the piano. But Sugar thinks it wonderful and tells Saga that she can talk to Greta and play it anytime she likes. Sugar says that “everything worked out great” and Saga says “no, it didn’t”.
*
Saga goes home, with Sugar trailing behind her to find her grandmother outside waiting for her. Her grandmother says that it was getting late and she was worried, but Saga ignores her. She tells Saga that dinner is almost ready, but Saga apologies and says that she isn’t hungry. Saga runs into the house and shuts herself in her room. Sugar really doesn’t understand and questions her. Saga tells her that she has decided to get her mother’s piano back and Sugar tells her that there’s “no reason Greta wouldn’t let you borrow it any time you want”. But Saga is crying again and says that she doesn’t “want to lose anything else” and that she “can’t lose anything else”. Sugar says “you’re scaring me”. I wonder what will happen now. Such a sad episode!

Ep. 21

Saga has decided to earn the money to buy the piano. Poor Sugar tries to help but causes more problems and is told to leave. Not surprised Salt decided to become a wind fairy. Salt and Pepper find their Twinkles and is time for them to leave. Feel sorry for Sugar. She put on a brave front but will miss them dearly. A big worry Sugar is getting weak and her flower is wilting. The way she collapsed at the end was a bad sign. At least Saga found her but what will happen now.

I actually had to watch Ep. 22 first this week to see how things work out.

while eventually Saga plays her song for Sugar, which seems to do the trick and bring her out of her weakened state, there’s a lot of foreshadowing that Sugar will soon have to go like Salt and Pepper have.

Saga is running her self ragged and ignoring all her friends, including Sugar, just to make money to buy back her mother’s piano, and Sugar decides to help her at the coffee shop. However, Sugar’s “help” messes things up and only gives Saga more work to do. Annoyed, she finally puts Sugar and Pepper out of the shop.
*
Salt has been spending all his time with Turmeric and decides to become a cloud fairy. Turmeric and Ginger try to talk him out of it, but he’s made up his mind. Then the Elder shows up. Pepper is spending some time with the baby in her house, playing with her and helping her with her first words. Then the Elder and Salt come to her.
*
Saga is exhausted, but determined and everyone is worried about her. When Anne and Norma try to express some concern and tell her to relax and have some fun, Saga snaps at them and tells them that she “doesn’t have time for fun”. She even ignores Greta.
*
It looks like something might be wrong with Sugar. She is getting weak and having dizzy spells. She can’t find Salt and Pepper. When she tries to help Saga at the coffee shop again, she has another dizzy spell and knocks down all of the coffee that Saga prepared for delivery. As Saga cleans up the mess, Sugar tries to apologize, but Saga begs her to stop “helping” and “just go away”. Sugar, now really hurt and upset, is crying when Salt and Pepper find her.
*
Salt and Pepper only add to her misery when they tell her that they must return to the fairy world. Their flowers have bloomed, but they still can’t explain to Sugar what a twinkle is, saying that it’s too hard. They don’t want to leave her this way, but Sugar tells them not to worry and that she’ll be fine. She’s sure she can work things out with Saga and sends them off to the fairy world. Sugar tells Salt and Pepper that she’ll miss them, but will join them soon. She puts on a good front, but cries just as soon as they are gone. A very appropriate rain starts to come down and the Elder is watching her.
*
Sugar is not at all well and now her flower is dying too. Saga, home late as usual, finds Sugar passed out on the floor. She thinks that she is sleeping, but then Saga panics when she can’t wake Sugar up. I wonder if Sugar is directly connected to her flower. If the flower dies, will Sugar die too?

Ep. 23

A high speed chase involving a piano! I have never seen that one before. It was nice to see Salt and Pepper come back to help. The scene at the end where everyone played the song together was very nice. I think Greta is starting to grow also and become a better person. It was interesting that Saga left the piano at Greta’s house.
*
Looks like the next episode will deal with it being time for Sugar to leave. I expect that is going to be sad.

Saga finally gets Sugar to wake up and although Sugar says she’s fine, Saga knows that something is really wrong. And Sugar’s flower is still dying – they must be connected after all. Saga finds out from her grandmother that she might be the cause of Sugar’s illness and that must make her feel pretty bad, although she denies being the cause.
*
Greta still can’t bring herself to play Saga’s piano and even when her father insists, she comes up with a silly excuse not to. And Greta has a gorgeous bathtub! I want one! This situation is really bothering her and I feel bad for her. She really does have a kind heart.
*
Saga asks Ginger for some advice about Sugar’s illness and finds out that Salt and Pepper are back in the Fairy world. Ginger ends up getting angry with Saga for the way she treated Sugar and flies off. And poor Sugar can’t even make snow anymore!
*
Even when Greta comes up with a good way to return the piano to Saga, Saga ignores her. So, Greta calls Saga’s friends together after school to “discuss something important” and tells them she wants their help in moving the piano to Saga’s house when Greta’s parents are out for the day.
*
Saga tries to talk to the Elder about Sugar, but he’s just too busy. She buys some waffles for Sugar, hoping that will make her feel better, but when she gets home, she finds Sugar passed out again! Saga puts Sugar to bed and plans the toy piano for her. The flower suddenly revives and so does Sugar! There was a connection! It’s sad to think that Saga almost lost Sugar that way. Saga doesn’t understand how Sugar suddenly got better and Sugar didn’t even realize she was sick. And the kids get ready to move the piano!

Ep. 24

Nice to see Sugar’s flower bloom. It still was sad that it meant it was time for her and Saga to part. Think Greta has matured a little by her keeping the piano at the store. Also the music store owner is not the complete grouch he pretends to be. Saga’s cousin in a way turned out like a big Sugar. Did like that Saga told her about season fairy and we hear Sugar’s voice at the end.

Looking forward to the bonus episodes.

Ep. 25

So we get a flash back to when Sugar was living with Saga. Greta sure got played into being the witch. I like how Sugar eventually helped Saga practice her lines. I bet the bear guy is coming back to see the play from the looks of it.

I liked how everyone pulled together for the sake of the play. Sugar’s own play was adorable too!
*
I thought it really sweet that Vincent kept in touch with Saga and even showed up for her play. I think now he may have been like Saga at one point – that he could see fairies, but can’t any longer. But he was able to see the fairy dust around Saga and he knew that Sugar was there.
*
The older Saga now plays the piano for Canon. And it was nice to see that Greta is still around and is still Saga’s “rival”. Nice too that the Bear Pianist is back in town and Saga gets to see Vincent again.
*
A nice scene of Saga seeing the little boy talking to a fairy and hearing the word “waffo” again. She knows the fairies are still around even if she can only see the fairy dust now. And she thinks of Sugar.
*
This was a really cute show. Sometimes a little too, too sweet, but the story was still fun. I really liked the fact that the season fairies were named after real seasonings too! A nice touch!

Also loved the series.

I thought it was kind of a gyp that after the flower opened, Saga didn’t see them anymore, but the last two episodes close some holes and I was okay with it then.
