Unfortunately the license for House of Five Leaves will be expiring on August 7 at midnight PDT, so if you haven’t gotten around yet to watching this gorgeous action series set in historical Japan now’s your chance! It’s only 12 episodes long, so don’t be intimidated by the thought of marathoning it.

I can’t think of anything good that will come from the CR/Funi partnership.

Besides them keeping licensing costs down because they’re playing ball with each other. Crunchyroll really makes out great in this deal because Funimation has assumed most of the financial risk, and has delayed compensation on home video sales for making back their bank.

It doesn’t look good for Sentai at the moment, as they have to decide how to respond to this. They either join the club, stay independent with a very slim chance of getting anything new for a while, go the Discotek route and license older titles. How they respond is critical to their long term survival.

I expect that the Sentai folks were expecting this or something like it, so they likely have some idea of what they need to do. It may be that they license what they can directly and work with Netflix / Amazon to do the physical releases of titles that streamed there. Its also possible that the Japanese companies will push back since this cuts into their income from licenses. With the production committee model all it would take would be for one member to say no to any offer from the Crunchyroll / Funimation consortium.

You know, it makes me wonder now about Toei and Funimation on the Dragonball Super series. It could be that Toei has held onto it because they intend to take back the licenses on the older Dragonball series, then stream & release for themselves or work with a third party to do that. The prospect of the loss of that money maker might have goaded Funimation into doing this.

It’s all speculation, time will tell.
