Funimation Delays Dragon Ball Z Season 2 Blu-Ray

I’ve gotten so used to delays that if a Funi release were to be released without one I’d be shocked…and suspicious.

Maybe they’ve decided to give up their tragic, though ironic, pan-and-scan cropping foolery and give us 4:3? Maybe they’re going back to fix the overly-bright, blurred images? Actually, my favorite “hope” is that they’ve finally redubbed either Piccolo, Vegeta or both with a non-Sabat actor.

“New age of Kai” to cover Majin Buu Saga in Toriko’s current timeslot

The April issue of Shueisha’s V Jump magazine is announcing on Friday that a new Dragon Ball Kai anime series will premiere on Sunday, April 6 at 9:00 a.m. on Fuji TV. The “new age of Kai” will cover the Majin Buu Saga.

Dragon Ball Z Kai (known as just Dragon Ball Kai in Japan) condenses the 1989-1996 Dragon Ball Z anime series to more closely follow Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball manga. The series features digital high-definition remastering, a re-recorded soundtrack, and select scenes updated with new effects or re-animated footage. The 2009-2011 run of Dragon Ball Z Kai covered from the Saiyan Saga to the Android Cell Saga.

That Sunday 9:00 a.m. time slot is currently held by Toriko. The Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods film will have its broadcast television premiere on Fuji TV on March 22 at 9:00 p.m.

In November, Australian anime distributor Madman Entertainment responded to a Facebook question about the Buu Saga in Dragon Ball Z Kai: “DBZ Kai buu Saga should be released sometime [in 2014]. We’re just waiting on dubs etc. to be finished.”

Kyle Hebert and Sean Schemmel, the voice actors of Gohan and Goku respectively in Dragon Ball Z’s English dub, reported last April that they were recording for the Buu Saga of Dragon Ball Z Kai.

The Japanese cast recorded new episodes in November 2012, after the series’ original run in Japan in March 2011. Funimation released the series on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in North America. The American channel Nicktoons completed the first run of Funimation’s English release in 2012 and removed the series from its schedule last April. The series is airing on Saban Brands and The CW’s Vortexx (formerly Toonzai) programming block on Saturdays.

North American company currently has no plans for the dub

FUNimation Entertainment confirmed with ANN on Monday that it has not begun recording a dub for the Majin Buu saga of Dragon Ball Z Kai, and does not yet have plans to do so.

Dragon Ball Z Kai voice actors Kyle Herbert and Sean Schemmel reported in April of 2013 that they were recording for the Buu saga, but the Buu saga will not air in Japan until this April 6. The Japanese cast recorded new episodes in November 2012, after the series’ original run in Japan in March 2011.

O vaguely remember hearing something to the effect that dbz kai would never happen. I took comfort in that.

Buu saga should have never happened. It is the biggest slap to the face of the franchise that wasn’t done by funimation.

…as they did for Initial D, Funimation really ought to redub dbz. They really should have changed the cast with Kai; I don’t understand how funi has no qualms about screwing with the video and audio of dbz itself but treat their horrendous in-house dub as though it were sacrosanct. The one thing that they need to change, they won’t.

I shudder to think of the uproar if Funimation had re-dubbed Dragon Ball Z Kai with an all-new cast. It’d have made Celestial happy maybe, but oh my how many other fans would have been pissed.

Mark Gosdin

Couldn’t be more outcry than when they switched from Ocean.

Besides, the whole idea behind Kai was that it was “anti-nostalgia”, that it was “dbz done right”. That set the stage for a dub that was done right. But alas…

…I don’t know why funimation directors suddenly forget how to direct, casting directors forget how to cast, writers forget how to write and actors-most importantly-forget how to act. Funi’s dbz dub is like a clinic for how not to dub. Just about the only “positive” is that it gives bang/zoom and studiopolis a dub so bad that they can say “at least we are better than that!”

Basically, if you’re super buff, live in New York, don’t mind dressing up in DBZ garb, and are willing to hold up some appetizer trays for a few hours, you’re in luck. Your services are definitely needed at this guy’s going-away party.

He can’t pay much, but you’ll get free food and the chance to tell a story that begins with, “So I was working at this party, dressed as Goku…”
