Just a note that Japan was locked down way more than we were during that time frame
(August of last year they were in Emergency Lockdown for a couple of prefectures iirc)

They also still do video rentals and have a large secondhand market.
People will buy watch a few times and trade or sell off. Some might even buy stuff to copy then sell or trade while the value is still there. Secondhand value seems to drop fast on stuff over there. So I imagine more then a few wait for a deal.
Plus most probably don’t really have the space to keep everything. I’d be curious if the manga and figure sales are showing signs of shrinking in Japan to.
I’m seeing more crowdfunded style releases and complete sets. Most companies at least seem to be slowly moving from the 2 or 3 episode volumes release pattern.
