Sentai Filmworks Licenses Knights of Sidonia Anime for Home Video

posted on 2015-02-23 14:49 EST
Series streamed on Netflix last summer

Good. My shelf was getting Mecha deprived.

We are super excited about Knights of Sidonia, so for the next 30 min. we’ll be doing a small Q&A about it. Ask away!

3:58 PM - 23 Feb 2015

If only Sentai could have also been the one commissioned to dub it too.

The way they chose to animate this “on the 3s”, even though it is CG and has no reason not to be fluid (it’s not like someone has to draw the intermediary frames), really made it hard for me to watch as the “stop motion effect” got to me.

As cool as it is that Netflix is releasing this on home video, and that it is Sentai doing it, I’m probably going to have to pass on it.

Q. which season of knights of sidonia?
A. It is season 1.

Q. Will you be using the same dub/subs that are on netflix?
A. Yes, it has the same dub.

Q. Will you be using the same dub/subs that are on netflix?
A. Same dub, we have re-timed and resized the subtitles to make them a little more sexy.

Q. Will your release use the same Japanese 5.1 audio track as the Japanese Blu-ray releases?
A. We have an exclusive 5.1 English mix.

Q. I don’t have a question, but thanks for licensing one of my recent favourites
A. You’re Welcome!

Q. do you have a release price worked out yet?
A. Not quite yet.

Q. How soon will it be released? Basically all the work is done. Been really looking forward to this one.
A. Soon!

Q. Limited Edition?
A. YES! There will be a Limited Edition set of Knights of Sidonia.

Q. Thank God, I almost thought I had to pass on KoS or buy it elsewhere. I hope the LE will be worth it.
A. It will definitely be worth it.

Q, Will you do season 2 as well?
A. Right now we only have rights for Season 1.

Alrighty! Thanks for a great Q&A everyone! I’ll start writing a little rundown of all that was discussed, putting it out soon!

Wondering what will be included in our release of Knights of Sidonia? Here’s a handy rundown of what you can expect:

Hmm. If the stuttering has been fixed in the home video release and the LE is suitably cool then I might just wind up picking this up after all.

Sounds like this release will be very much a “Director’s Cut”. Hopefully the dubbing will have been expanded / corrected to match the new materials.

Like Tonka I haven’t had a new mecha series in my collection in forever. This may just well break that drought.

Mark Gosdin

Makes me wonder, did Sentai have the show all along and seeing how they weren’t getting any traction with Toonami decided on the next best thing: Netflix? Same with Seven Deadly Sins? Exclusivity and all that.

Sure it’s one thing to stream on CR/TAN, but you’re preaching to the choir when you do that. Better to convert the uninitiated and get new followers.

What do you think Dale?

It could be similar to the CR / Discotek deal. Netflix had home video rights and wanted to work with one of the licensors to get the home video release out, and Sentai offered them what they were looking for. (Special Edition extras etc.)
