Log Horizon

Episode 6 –

spoiler

Nyanta gives the chefs at the guild some cooking lessons and Henrietta tells Marielle that they should keep their food a secret for the time being. Shiro told her that it might cause problems. And Henrietta has a new dress up doll to play with in the form of Akatsuki. LOL Of course Shiro gave Henrietta his permission!

After the great welcome back party for Serara and all the wonderful food, Marielle and Shiro get a chance to talk privately. She thanks him again for saving Serara, but he feels it wasn’t that much of a big deal and asks what has been happening in Akihabara while he was away. Marielle tells him that things are a little safer, but that there is “something unpleasant in the air”.

The guilds seem to be falling into ranks, with the larger guilds determining the town rules, such as control of the market and the better hunting grounds. There is less PKing, but Shiro still doesn’t like what he’s hearing. The minor guilds tried to form a council, but the difference of opinions was too great for it to happen. Now with the expansion, the level cap has been raised to 100 and many are aiming for that. Hunters are now using EXP pots too, which is a form of cheating.
The Hamelin guild gathered up a bunch of new players on the pretext of helping them, but is instead selling their low level members’ EXP pots to the larger guilds that want to level up quickly. Shiro is even more disgusted to hear this and he just doesn’t like the way this world is changing. He wonders what he can do. He doesn’t even have a guild. Or is he only using that as an excuse not to get involved?

As he thinks about guilds in general and why he doesn’t like them, Nyanta joins Shiro and they discuss it further. It ends with Nyanta waiting for Shiro to do something amazing. Later, Minori receives a message from Shiro. He knows that she and her brother are stuck in the Hamelin guild and why. As Minori begins to cry, Shiro tells her that he will come and rescue them. She just has to believe in him for now.

The next day, Shiro meets with Marielle and Henrietta and tells them that he needs their help. He tells them that he wants to save twins he knows from a nasty guild, but Henrietta knows right away that he’s talking about Hamelin. His means to have Hamelin leave Akihabara. But there’s more. He intends to clean up the entire city! They give Shiro a chance to explain his plan and he asks for five million gold. The Crescent Moon Alliance doesn’t have that much money, but that is only a small part of the plan. He also needs everyone’s good will to save the city. The more people that want to save the town, the more likely it is to become a reality.

But he also surprises the girls by telling them to help his guild. His guild? Marielle is happy to hear that he’s formed a guild and now has a home. So much so, that she cries tears of joy. And the guild’s name? Log Horizon! All right! Go Shiro!

The Crescent Moon Alliance is helping out Shiro with his plan, and everyone is contributing in their own way. Shiro’s plan for making money is a refreshment stand. And it’s sure to do well, since they are going to have the only food in Akihabara with any flavor to it. The residents of the city find the menu items to be expensive, and doubt the taste of the food can live up to the price. But one brave soul tries a Crescent Burger with Marie’s enticement, and pronouncing that it tastes like a real hamburger, excites the rest of the crowd. Suddenly the stand is doing a very brisk business! Shiro is very pleased, but from the way the episode started, I thought his plan might involve food and a place to stay.

Word of mouth spreads and the line grows. But can the procurement of the ingredients keep up with the demand? The popularity of the stand grows even more. People wonder how the wonderful food is being done and others want to get in on it. The stand sold out on its first day and made a lot of money. However, it’s only a drop in the bucket for the huge amount that Shiro needs.

The problem now is that they can get plenty of customers, but they just can’t keep up with the demand. So now it’s time for the next part of the plan. Shiro lets Minori know that she and her brother just have to hold out a little longer. Shiro and Nyanta meet with a friend, Souji, who now has his own guild. The Caravan of the West Wind guild is small, but it’s one of the more powerful ones. He tells Souji that he’s started a guild as well, but needs his help. Souji brightens up immediately and agrees to help without even hearing the plan!

Souji ends up helping out at the food stand and is an instant hit with the female customers. One of his men thinks that was all that Shiro wanted, but Souji assures him that – “There’s no end to his plans.” Shiro is ever the master strategist! I wonder if he’s now thinking of some kind of hotel (or perhaps an apartment building?).

Marie and Henrietta meet with Karashin to negotiate a supply of ingredients for their food stand. It’s a good deal, but Karashin is shrewd, and is holding out for more. He proposes a partnership, but this is part of Shiro’s plan. Henrietta interrupts their talk to say that their other “guests” have arrived. Karashin is surprised until Marie tells him their real business. They want to sell Crescent Moon! Karashin regrets his hasty words and agrees to supply them with ingredients for a fair price, dictated by Henrietta of course! LOL

Minori is just waiting for Shiro to rescue her and her brother. She thinks over what had happened to them since the Apocalypse, and none of it was good. Then they got involved with Hamelin and things just went from bad to worse. But she admires Shiro and the place he’s made for himself here. However, she thinks that she doesn’t have the right to be saved.

Mitchitaka of the Marine Agency and Roderic of the Roderic Merchant Guild have joined Marie, Henrietta, and Karashin. Now Henrietta’s true job begins. She explains why Karashin is there and tells them that she would like to make them the same offer. She hints that her guild is taking on a major endeavor without saying what it is. However, they need help. The gentlemen misunderstand her and think it’s a quest. Now, Shiro told her not to lie, but this really isn’t lying, is it?

Henrietta begins to explain the strategy and tells them that Shiro is in charge. The men don’t seem to like that and Roderic jumps up, calling Shiro “the Villain in Glasses”. LOL The girls didn’t realize that Shiro was so famous, but this will help Henrietta. Now the discussion moves to money and Henrietta says that they are looking at a figure of five million gold. Once again, the men are shocked. Karashin begins to wonder if it really is a quest. Nothing costs that much money. The other two men think it is some kind of new legendary quest because of the expansion pack. However, all three men know that there is major profit to be made on a quest that costs that much.

Marie further entices them by serving the men a new recipe, a delicious pudding. Henrietta tells them that once the operation is complete, they will receive copies of all their cookbooks. Henrietta asks 1.5 million from each guild. Roderic agrees immediately, as does Karashin. Mitchitaka proposes to be the sole sponsor, and the men begin to fight amongst themselves. Marie is pleased – everything worked! And Shiro was so certain of their success that he’s already working on the next plan!

Shiro has called together all of the major guildmasters of Akihabara for a conference. He’s pleased that everyone showed up. He gets things started by stating the purpose of the meeting. Already there are mumblings about the first failed alliance. But Shiro says that his only intent is to improve the situation in Akihabara.

One guildmaster has no interest in this and gets up to leave. Silver Sword is a combat guild and William Massachusetts doesn’t care what happens to the city. He leaves the meeting, but it was expected. Meanwhile, Shiro’s other plan is also in play. Naotsugu and Akatsuki will rescue Minori, Tohya, and the new players from Hamelin.

Shiro wants to form a council to discuss Akihabara’s problems, calling it a Round Table conference. The immediate problem is to improve safety, but in the long run, they will handle all types of problems. Shiro tells them how they were chosen to represent the people of the city and then turns the talk to the city’s safety. He mentions that some guilds are locking up the new players, but the others already know about the EXP pots, and one mentions that it isn’t illegal.

Shiro brings up the point that there aren’t any laws in this world, but Issac insists that there is and mentions the “no combat” zones. Shiro tells him that it’s just part of the game and not an actual law. Crusty asks what will happen to guilds that won’t obey the Round Table. Shiro is strict about this – they will either be banished from the city or forced to disband.
Crusty can see how the council would be worthwhile, but it would basically be for show without any real power being it. Shiro stops him from going on. So that is what Shiro wanted all that money for! He bought the Guild Building’s zone! Some are shocked and others are impressed. Shiro can now control the zone’s settings, and has say over who can enter or leave the zone. He can blacklist people from having any access to the Guild Building! And the bank is also in the Guild Building. Good going Shiro! LOL Shiro really is a “Villain in Glasses”!

The kids run into a problem getting away from Hamelin, but Tohya and Minori fight the guard while the others make a run for it. Shiro taught them well, and the twins are soon escaping too. Akatsuki sends word to Shiro that the escape has begun. Meanwhile, the guildmasters are dealing with Shiro’s blackmail. Anyone that opposes the Round Table will be blacklisted and anyone that is blacklisted can’t assess the bank. It’s as simple as that.

Schreider of Hamelin stops Tohya and Minori from going any further. His level is higher, but the kids still try to get away. They make it through the guild’s door and suddenly there is a barrier in place, preventing Schreider and his men from following them. Shiro has already restricted them. Shouryuu comes to pick up Minori and Tohya and take them to the building’s entrance. He turns away and somehow Schreider breaks through the door and grabs Tohya. But Akatsuki is suddenly there to save him. She contacts Shiro and gives him Schreider’s name for the blacklist. Schreider grabs Akatsuki by the throat and suddenly finds himself outside of the building. Naotsugu takes over now and grabs Schreider. Akatsuki tells Minori and Tohya that they are safe now.

Shiro makes one more plea to the guildmasters. He wants to restore life to everyone in the city, and eventually, the entire world. He also wants to create laws to restore order and make living there safe. He then asks if anyone opposes these goals. As he asks this, Akatsuki tells him that the escape was a success. He smiles at that and Issac takes offense. He thinks that Shiro is smiling for another reason, and Issac wants to know just what it is that Log Horizon wants. Shiro smiles again, adjusts his glasses, and narrows his eyes. I can’t wait to see what he says next!

A week later, Akihabara is already changing. People look happier and the market area is doing a brisk business too. There are also more food stalls.

But going back a week to the conference, Shiroe has yet to answer Issac’s question of what Log Horizon really wants. Shiroe explained his first goal earlier – to bring life back to the city and to protect the residents. First, in order to improve life, he has Marie share the secret of making good food. Michitaka is next and says that with the help of Shopping Street 8 and the Roderic Merchant Guild, a steam engine has been built. It’s still a prototype, but it’s a start. Shiroe applied the secret of cooking to this as well. A player with a high crafting skill can take materials and create something without the command menu.

This will give the economy a boost. People will begin to invent the items that will be in demand. This means that people will have to make money in order to buy them. Because of this, Michitaka declares that the crafting guilds present are in favor of the Round Table. A good start! Shiroe continues. People in the town have sunk into despair with nothing to do. It’s too easy to live on just a little money. Shiro proposes a better economic system. As for safety, the laws need only be a guideline, and not be too strict. However, when things do get out of hand, banning will be enforced. He makes a suggestion and then brings up human rights. Shiroe makes more suggestions and wants to include the People of the Land.

This surprises the others, but Shiroe explains that this really isn’t a game anymore. The People of the Land are the original residents and should be respected. The Adventurers are the outsiders here, and in the minority. Issac protests this, but Marie explains it a little more. Shiroe says that they need the People of the Land, but the People of the Land don’t really need them in order to survive. They can’t afford to damage their relationships with the People of the Land. Crusty stands and says that D.D.D. is in favor of the Round Table. West Wind Brigade joins as well. So do Black Sword Knights, Honesty, Grandeur, Radio Market, and of course the Crescent Moon Alliance. That’s everyone and Shiroe has his Round Table!

A week later and things have begun to improve. Hamelin was shut down and the rescued kids joined Crescent Moon. They needed bigger quarters to accommodate everyone. Shiroe is having a moving day as well. The city’s population is increasing as well. Many People of the Land are arriving too, but is that a good thing or a bad thing? It remains to be seen. I wonder what Shiroe is thinking. Will they really go to war?

Shiroe gets many visitors and plenty of house warming gifts. I think I enjoyed Issac’s the most. LOL Nyanta plans curry for dinner and I loved everyone’s reactions. Who knew curry was so popular with these guys? LOL But Nyanta returns too soon, with Tohya and Minori in tow. Shiroe thought they were with Crescent Moon, but the kids want to join his guild. How can he say no? Of course he accepts them into Log Horizon. And they all enjoy a wonderful curry dinner together!

Shiroe has been working really hard with not much time to enjoy himself. Now that summer is here, Marie wants to go to a beach. Shiroe comes up with an idea for a training camp. This will help the new players and satisfy Marie’s need for a vacation.

A strange delegation arrives in town and the People of the Land react oddly. They are from Eastal and they’ve come to meet with the Round Table. The messenger invites them to a meeting as well as a dance. Shiroe already knew that something like this would happen. And of course there are pros and cons about participating. But it looks like the “Villain with Glasses” has a plan.

The training camp will take place in the town of Coushi, while Shiroe and the some of the Round Table members head towards the meeting in Eastal. It will be a good chance to learn more about the People of the Land and their changing role in this world. Marie finally gets to the beach and it was funny to see that Shiroe’s face had been drawn on the beach ball.

Shiroe and his party arrive at the Palace of Eternal Ice for the meeting and the dance. They meet the High Lord at the dance. Everyone looks so nice in their dressy clothes! As Crusty speaks with Sergiatte Cowen, Shiroe and the other are pretty much ignored by everyone else. Neither side knows much about the other. The High Lord’s granddaughter, Princess Lenessia arrives. Crusty seems quite taken with her. And at the training camp, the kids will be going to a dungeon!

Episode 12 –

It was funny when Shiroe recognized the dance music at the party as the opening theme to the game. Sergiatte speaks with his guests, and invites Shiroe and the others to join the dancing. They all try to avoid the issue, but Crusty selects Shiroe to go and dance, since he wishes to continue talking with Sergiatte. Henrietta decides to save Shiroe and be his dance partner. Shiroe admits that he can’t dance and Henrietta reminds him that she’s a bard before spinning out to the dance floor.

At the training camp, Isuzu entertains the others with her own bard skills. Nyanta explains what a bard is and how those skills can be used. When the music ends at the party, Shiroe and Henrietta were the only ones on the dance floor. Everyone else stopped to watch them. Good thing Henrietta is a bard and could teach Shiroe as they danced!

A boy runs into Akatsuki and thinking that she’s also a kid, invites her to play with his friends. Minori contacts Shiroe with her concerns about going to the dungeon the following day. He encourages her and wishes her luck. Shiroe has his own concerns the next day. They really need to understand the People of the Land so that the Adventurers don’t become a harmful influence. And it looks like they already have a couple of enemies at the palace, as they discuss the upcoming conference.

At the training camp, the kids form their party and enter the dungeon called the Forest of Lagranda. Minori is still a little worried. That Rudy kid is a bit on the obnoxious side and although he put himself in front, where he really doesn’t belong, I have a feeling that he’ll run at the first hint of trouble. Okay, I take that back. Rudy’s attack was pretty good. But he’s still annoying. LOL The kids are still pretty weak as a whole and end up retreating when things get out of hand. Better to be safe than sorry!

Ha! Crusty blows off one of the nobles to introduce himself to Lenessia. I knew he liked her! LOL I can’t wait to see how that works out.

I can guess, rewatch the opening and look at the girl in the Valkyrie helmet between Crusty and Shiroe in the opening, I think our Princess might become an adventurer herself.

The Round Table party has been invited to several events, so Shiroe splits them up so that they can attend all of them. I’m beginning to like Lenessia a lot. She prefers flannel over silk, and she thinks Crusty is a “pain”! LOL But I think she likes him just a tiny bit as well. Lenessia is definitely the bored, lonely princess type. She knows that any compliment or gift she receives is only because of who her grandfather is. She hates that people are using her to curry favor with her grandfather. But perhaps Crusty is just what she needs to spice up her life. And he certainly seems to be doing that! LOL Crusty has made Lenessia the prize in a friendly show of strength. The winner gets to escort her to that evening’s party. And I think Crusty intends to win. He does! LOL

The kids are in the dungeon again and being chased by skeletons. Thanks to Tohya’s quick thinking, they escape them. Rudy has the nerve to blame the others for his weakness. Minori knows what their real problem is, but is never given the chance to speak.

Crusty is a big hit with the ladies, but only has eyes for Lenessia, supposedly. She wishes that he would just leave her alone. Crusty likens Lenessia to his sister and she’s touched, until he brings up all her bad points. He just doesn’t treat her like everyone else does and she isn’t sure how to take that. But they make a deal and she’s a bit dismayed when he shakes her hand, instead of kissing it.

Akatsuki practices dancing and thinks of Shiroe as she does so. But it was funny when Shiroe catches her at it. He’s brought her a drink and they discuss what she’s learned from her observations of the People of the Land. As they talk, someone arrives in a very strange way. He introduces himself as a mage from Miral Lake and his name is Regan. He’s come to speak with Shiroe. What now?

Episode 14 –

spoiler

Regan turns out to be the mysterious sage of Miral Lake, and Shiroe thinks he may be able to learn about more of the world from him, but I don’t trust him. There is just something off about Regan and I wonder what he’s after. He tells Shiroe and Akatsuki about the different types of magic, and Shiroe has never known of such powerful magic to be in this game before.

Regan claims that he studies “world-class magic” and a very powerful spell called “World Fraction” was used to create the Apocalypse. He wants to know how much Shiroe knows of this Apocalypse. In turn, Shiroe wants the same information from Regan, since he knows next to nothing about what happened.

“World Fraction” was apparently used three times, so Shiroe requests information on the other two times it was used. Regan tells the story of how, about 350 years ago, this world was much more advanced. Humans, elves, dwarves, and alvs lived together in peace. Alvs were magical inventors, but that power eventually caused the other races to destroy them. Shiroe reveals that he is half alv and Regan tells him that the alvs were treated as slaves throughout the world.

Then the Luquenje came into being. These “six bent alv princesses” did not know of the existence of one another, but swore revenge for the destruction of their race. Because of them, the world was thrown into chaos. In the aftermath, the Luquenje were almost defeated, but that is when the first World Fraction spell was used. No one knows the details, but the spell caused the demi-humans to be created. The souls of those killed in the constant warfare were used in their creation. War with these creatures pushed the world into a dark age.

To counter the demi-humans, humans used alv secrets to create more races. Still, it wasn’t enough since the demi-humans could reincarnate. Sixty years after the first World Fraction, humanity was losing the endless war with the demi-humans. A divine summoning spell was used to call the messengers of God 240 years ago and this was the second World Fraction. This one brought the adventurers.

As Shiroe ponders this, he asks Regan why he came to him, since there are other Round Table members present. Regan says it’s because Shiroe is an archmage. He’s known about him for ninety-eight years and the fact that Shiroe acts alone proves to Regan that he’s an archmage. Shiroe didn’t even realize he was that old until just now! LOL With the way time moves, ninety-eight years here is about eight years plus in the real world, which is when Shiroe first started playing Elder Tale. Nice how all these pieces fit together! Now, if adventurers appeared here 240 years ago, twenty years in the real world, that would coincide with the beta for Elder Tale. So, now I have to wonder just which world is being manipulated. Everything is fitting together too neatly at this point.

Over a meal with the Round Table, the members discuss their findings. Only a very few of the lords here really want manpower. Most just want to share technology or forge trade agreements. But it seems that, for some reason, Shiroe did not share his meeting with Regan. Shiroe thinks back to his conversation with Regan and the interesting things he was told about “Spirit Theory”. It all leads up to the fact that memories might be damaged or even lost when someone dies and is resurrected.

Regan also tells Shiroe that “the demi-human psyches were warped by the first World Fraction’s curse.” Since they reincarnate, they may be having trouble with their own memories. Shiroe wonders if they will lose their memories as well. Akatsuki really didn’t understand any of this, and Shiroe tries to explain it to her. Up until now, the person playing the game, the psyche, has been outside of the game, where the body, the anima played in the game. But what if the psyche and the anima were joined together now? If memories and experience have become one, and if death occurs, memories, as well as experience points will be lost. Akatsuki gets it now.

It may only be a little bit of memory loss at a time, but it’s scary to think of people eventually forgetting the real world. This is why Shiroe tells Akatsuki that they won’t be sharing this theory with anyone for a while. Survival in this world just got a whole lot more important. If what Regan said is correct. Meanwhile, the kids at the dungeon are facing a rainy day and a slight bit of disharmony. Minori has had enough with the lack of planning and suggests they wait till the afternoon to enter the dungeon. With what she’s learned from Shiroe, I hope she can put them on the right track this time!

Minori and Rudy argue about going into the dungeon, but with Isuzu’s help, Minori gets everyone to listen to her. She starts by wanting to know everything she can about her teammates and they begin to talk about their skills. Of course Rudy start another argument. LOL But as they talk, Rudy ends up apologizing to Minori. They may be able to come together as a team after all.

They end up skipping going to the dungeon and instead discuss strategy. The following day, with pre-assigned roles, the team is much more successful and there is no need to run away this time. Meanwhile, Shiroe and Akatsuki are still thinking over what Regan had told them. Minori contacts Shiroe and reports the success of the day. Shiroe praises her party and Minori explains the strategy they used. As they talk, Shiroe begins to feel much better, and afterwards Shiroe decides to move forward, and take it one day at a time. It looks like Crusty is making some progress with Lenessia as well.

Back at the training camp, the girls relax by a pond after another successful day in the dungeon. It seems that Rudy and Isuzu are getting closer too. That evening they talk and realize that they have more in common than they first thought. But Isuzu also likens Rudy to a golden retriever, which I can see as well. LOL And he’s still too full of himself. However, when Isuzu tries to add him to her friends list, it doesn’t work, which she finds strange. How to explain that?

The next day, the beach is attacked by Sahuagin, fish monsters, and there are too many to fight! Why does this army of monsters seem so organized as well? Is this a planned invasion of some kind?
