Log Horizon

Episode 16 –

spoiler

The Sahuagin are still fighting on the coast and now an army of goblins are invading the forest. The group at the dungeon is pretty much cut off from everyone and can’t get in touch with Marielle and the group on the coast. Nyanta took a look at the approaching army and notes that there are also hobgoblins, trolls, and demon beasts in their numbers. A report is made to Shiroe, and Shiroe contacts the Round Table with the news.

This may be tied into the game. There was an event within the game called “Goblin King’s Return” and now it looks like it happening for real this time. Since the adventurers were busy with their own problems, they had not taken on any quests and now this all but forgotten event is about to become serious. The hero Knights of Izumo are mentioned and they would be strong enough to defeat the army, but Shiroe isn’t sure they even exist. In either case, people are going to be killed. The adventurers can come back, but for the People of the Land, death is permanent. Now might be a good time for Shiroe to be worried about that memory loss problem as well.

Sergiatte has been informed of the goblin army as well by his own messengers. Lenessia hasn’t seen Crusty and looks a little down. Her father comes to inform her of the news. He will be returning to Maihama and wants his daughter to remain in the safety of the palace. It’s important that the conference continues and that the lords come together.

Marielle’s group is safe but she’s worried. Naotsugu and Nyanta reassure her and Naotsugu tells her that he’s sure Shiroe will come up with a good plan. That does seem to cheer her up. However, the light from torches has appeared on the horizon. They put out the fires and Naotsugu examines a map. It looks like the army will attack Choushi first for supplies. But this is a smaller raiding army from what Nyanta saw earlier. That main division is further north. The kids want to do their best to protect Choushi and Rudy wants to go as well, but that seems to upset Isuzu. However, Rudy reminds her that the people in Choushi don’t even know that the goblins are coming, but Isuzu still puts up an argument.
Shiroe has requested that the West Wind Brigade join him at the palace. If worst comes to worst, they can help with the defense. The nobles haven’t approached them though and Henrietta is sure that they are also discussing the army. Crusty wonders if they should go to them, but although Shiroe agrees, he says that he has something to tell them first. He finally tells them about the risk of memory loss that death for them will take. There’s a bit of a panic, but Shiroe has no details for them, and will continue to investigate, although it seems to be true. Crusty realizes that this is why he has already lost some of his memories, and they seem to have been minor memories of the real world. Crusty tells them that “you forget that you forgot”.

Marielle is against going to Choushi and wants to await the outcome of the conference. Nyanta and the other adults give their opinions, but Rudy is still determined to go. This upsets Isuzu again. I wonder why she is so concerned for Rudy. More arguments and Minori comes up with the idea of making themselves an advance party. They are soon on their way, but Minori is still of the mind that they should protect the town. However, they may be too late.

The group comes upon two goblins and a destroyed village. Tohya recognizes the doll that one of the goblins is holding. His anger drives him to attack the goblins. Rudy assists and the goblins are killed. This only makes the group want to protect the people even more, but Isuzu is still against it. It was sad to see Tohya bury the doll in place of the little girl that it had belonged to. And Minori may have a plan. Nyanta agrees with her as the adults join them. They knew the kids were going to end up fighting. LOL Everyone wants to hear Minori’s idea and she presents it to them. Instead of taking on the huge job of protecting Choushi, she wants to take the initiative, and attack the goblins instead! Minori may end up rivaling Shiroe as a master strategist, but he did teach her after all.

Yes, I see Minori becoming…

Minori’s strategy against the goblins seems to be working well. While Shiroe and the others talk about sending out forces, the nobles are also holding a private conference and they are blaming the adventurers for this goblin “plot” against them! And the Knights of Izumo seem to be gone without a trace. Will the Lords take on the goblins by themselves? Sacrificing a city to do that looks like the plan they are coming up with.

Shiroe knows that the Lords may be too proud to ask for their help, so he needs to figure out a way to help them without insulting them. Lenessia overhears two of the Lords talking about sacrificing Tsukuba and the cost in loss it will be to Lord Kiliva. They could ask the adventurers to help them, but then they would be in debt to them. But they do intend to use them for information and whatever else as much as they can.

Shiroe and the others are finally summoned and they meet Lenessia on the way. She starts to say something and Crusty kind of insults her, but apologizes. Lenessia reminds Crusty of what he once said – “freedom requires resolve” – before she leaves them. The meeting with the Lords quickly turns into an argument, which I think is what Shiroe wanted, although it gets a bit out of hand.

Lenessia enters the chamber, unannounced, and knowing she’s done the wrong thing, approaches her grandfather. She’s scared, knowing that she doesn’t belong there, but stands before Crusty anyway. Lenessia addresses him and he stands. She tells Crusty that she is going to Akihabara and wants him to accompany her. This brings gasps all around and Crusty asks her intentions. Lenessia wants to raise an army of volunteers!

Lenessia elaborates further as the nobles form their own opinions of what she is doing. Then she tells them that the Knights of Izumo are missing! The Lords wanted this fact kept secret, but Lenessia feels that they should be honest with one another. There is an uproar, but Sergiatte silences everyone and lets his granddaughter continue. Lenessia speaks passionately and I think Crusty is kind of proud of her in that moment. She will ask the adventurers to help them herself, even if it means standing in the street and asking each one individually.

I think her speech would have had more effect if she hadn’t fainted afterwards. LOL Crusty catches her and he’d like to leave things in Shiroe’s hands, but Shiroe insists on leaving the decision up to Crusty. Minori and her party continue their fight as Shiroe and the others, with Lenessia, head back to Akihabara. Shiroe was impressed by her speech as well. Lenessia understood the situation better than the nobles or the adventurers did! Shiroe thinks that perhaps Lenessia may be the one to save them all.

Lenessia is enchanted by Akihabara. Crusty leaves her in the care of Shiroe and Akatsuki for now. She experiences a lot of firsts, including her first Crescent Burger, which she really enjoys. Shiroe has her change her clothes in order to fit in a little better, but the princess still stands out in that outfit and I am sure it’s all part of Shiroe’s plan. LOL
Shiroe gets up on a stage and speaks to the residents of Akihabara. He tells them of the situation with the goblins. Lenessia can see how intelligent the adventurers are and begins to question things as she has always thought them to be. Shiroe speaks some more and then introduces Lenessia.

Lenessia speaks to the crowd and makes her plea. She extremely honest with what the nobles had planned to do, but still asks for their help to save Eastal. The crowd is impressed with her passion and beauty, but remains silent. Then it suddenly erupts with noise and yells. Yes! They will fight with her! Crusty will lead the army and calls for volunteers. Shiroe will be the strategist of course.

Afterwards, Lenessia can’t believe she did that. But Crusty praises her and offers his arm. She takes it and is ready to follow him. Now to come up with a plan. The goblins currently have the advantage, so the adventurers need speed, hence the use of the prototype steamship, Ocypete. Crusty will be in charge of using the Ocypete to get the troops to Narashino Port. Shiroe also wants to set up a headquarters for 1200 troops in the Midraunt Equestrian Park.
Michitaka has been left in charge at the palace and now receives a visit from Sergiatte. Lenessia’s actions have caused mistrust among the nobles. Michitaka and Henrietta listen to his proposal. Of course Shiroe will have to be part of the final decision, so there isn’t much they can do at the moment.

The kids are reunited with Marielle and the others. They are praised for a job well done. But it isn’t over yet. They will all work together now to protect Choushi. Meanwhile, Lenessia realizes just how good Crusty is at leading the adventurers. Lenessia will have twelve guards to protect her. They will be reaching Narashino Port soon and will have to march further north to Kasumi Lake, killing any goblins that get in their way. But it looks like a storm is approaching. I hope it doesn’t impede their efforts!

Episode 19 –

spoiler

The big battle against the goblins has begun. I can see why Crusty is in charge of this force. Wow! But Lenessia is of the opinion that although he seems to be enjoying himself, he looks lonely. Well, I think she’s probably the cure for that! LOL

The adventurers have a good network set up and an excellent communication system. But Shiroe already sees upcoming problems. Once the goblins are defeated, they will flee and that means trouble for the nearby villages, including Choushi. And Choushi is a main point. If the sahuagin get past Choushi and join the goblins, it won’t be good. It looks like Akatsuki is eager to fight as well. She seemed disappointed that Shiroe wasn’t heading into the battle just yet.

Just as it was feared, a large force of sahuagin is moving against Choushi. Once again, the kids want to attack the enemy first. Marielle gives the order and Minori presents their strategy. Shiroe receives the report that it will be sixty adventurers against a thousand sahuagin. Shiroe has already sent the Ocypete to their aid, but I just hope they make it in time.

The kids really aren’t doing too badly against the sahuagin. Naotsugu and Nyanta can see how much they’ve grown in strength and teamwork. And Miss Minori is a true gem! They can really see Shiroe’s influence as they compare Minori to him. But things take a turn for the worse when the goblins begin to show up. The thin forces are stretched even thinner as Minori’s team goes off to face the goblins.

On the way, Minori comes up with a quick strategy just before they see the first of the goblins. Their quick fight is a success, but there’s no time for celebration as more goblins appear closer to town. Shiroe lets Marielle know that the reinforcements are still an hour away. She passes the message on to the kids, but they are already so tired. The thought of help perks them up a bit, and I just hope that they can last that long. Then it begins to rain. Great – just what they need on top of everything else.

More enemies appear and not just goblins this time. Hobgoblins and dire wolves have joined in. The rain gets heavier as Minori remembers one of Shiroe’s lessons. But these kids are pretty much at their limit and have nothing left. Rudy tries to save Tohya and that upsets Isuzu. She screams when he gets injured. I still wonder why she’s so protective of him. She almost said something, but got cut off.

One of the wolves carries Rudy off and with one last spell, he defeats it. The rest of the kids run to him. They find him unconscious and in very bad shape. For some reason, healing spells are not working on him. Isuzu finally reveals the big secret when she tells everyone that Rudy isn’t an actual adventurer, but one of the People of the Land. I wasn’t expecting that! There is a flashback of the scene where Isuzu could not add Rudy to her list, which makes her realize who he really is. He makes her promise not to tell anyone.

And now I am crying along with Isuzu. The others are amazed to discover who Rudy is, but refuse to give up on him. Serara continues to heal him and begins to get a small response, but it isn’t enough. Minori contacts Shiroe for help. I wonder what he can come up with. Then again, if anyone can save Rudy, it would probably be Shiroe.

Shiroe and Akatsuki rush to Minori’s aid. Even Shiroe isn’t sure what he can do for Rudy, but it’s the first time Minori has asked him for help and he doesn’t intend to disappoint her. Minori tells Shiroe the situation as he flies to her location. Shiroe gives her some instructions to follow, as he tries to figure something out. When this world doesn’t work for you, you just have to change the rules!

Shiroe finally arrives and has Minori add him to her party. He’s going to try a new spell and swears everyone to secrecy. Shiroe restores Rudy’s MP, but he remains unconscious. Then Shiroe turns Rudy into a zombie, but it’s only going to last for three minutes. Rudy wakes up and knows he died. He tells his friends not to be sad, but Shiroe is not going to let Rudy give up on living.

Shiroe whips out a contract and quickly explains it to Rudy. It will make Rudy an adventurer and a member of Log Horizon. All Rudy has to do is sign it, but he can’t hold the quill, so Isuzu helps him. As he writes, the new magic begins to go into effect and Rudy dies. However, he will revive at the Cathedral as an adventurer! Rudy get to live! Yay! Shiroe’s new spell worked!

Crusty is now facing his own battle against the Goblin King and his minions. The battle is a quick one and Crusty joins in to take on the Goblin King himself. It’s a complete victory for Crusty and even Lenessia must be impressed. In Choushi, reinforcements have arrived and the town is saved. As Shiroe explains to Minori how the meaning of “adventurer” has changed, Rudy wakes up in the Cathedral, surprised to be alive – and have an adventurer status.

Isuzu enters and really lets Rudy have it! LOL Rudy apologizes to her and she smacks him. Isuzu keeps smacking him on the head until he gets the message and promises to do as she says. Once that’s out of the way, Isuzu gives in to being happy at seeing Rudy alive and well.

The more I think about this show, the more its title seems apt: it is zany and fun, but its level of zany in fun is just about the logarithm of Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere’s

…the whole Ocean Liner thing was a bit too Gilligan’s Island “build a radio out of coconuts” for me. Cannot suspend disbelief adequately of them turning the “MMORPG” into an “RTS”.

So, it’s back to the palace and a big celebration party. I can tell that Akatsuki wants to go to the party with Shiroe, but he just isn’t a party kind of guy. LOL Crusty won the war and Crusty can handle the party as well. I like how he gives Lenessia a knowing look too. Unfortunately, the goblins and their king are still around. But Shiroe is thinking several steps ahead again, so I’m sure everything will work out.

However, Shiroe’s absence is noted at the party, and when Henrietta comes to get him, he runs away, leaving Akatsuki to deal with her. Of course, that is just fine with Henrietta! LOL Even as she gushes over Akatsuki, she can see that the girl is troubled.

As Shiroe walks around he overhears what he thinks is a tale of the Izumo Knights, but it turns out to be the story about Rudy’s death. That was supposed to be a secret – how did it get out? Shiroe visits Regan and even he knows that Shiroe created a new magic. He also tells Shiroe that there is a new Adventurer magic in the west as well. And with what Shiroe was told earlier about the Demon Festival of Suzaku Gate, he seems to be intrigued. I can see the wheels turning again!

Once again, it seems that Regan is up to something. He knows about the Demon Festival of Suzaku Gate – an event similar to that of the Goblin King that happens in Minami. And Henrietta has found Shiroe! Back at the party, the music starts but no one is dancing. Crusty approaches Lenessia and gives her a very logical reason as to why they should dance. I don’t think she needed much convincing, but she does look a little distracted. It looks like her grandfather has made her an ambassador and wants her to stay with the Adventurers. But Crusty tells her that it isn’t that big of a deal and she can still be a lazy Princess. What relief! LOL But then Crusty tells Lenessia that she can only be lazy for three days – and they are back to their old selves!

Minori overhears some bad rumors going around about Shiroe and the Adventurers. Shiroe finally shows up, but wants to leave, much to Akatsuki’s disappointment. Shiroe notices and tells her that she’s acting strangely. She finally opens up and tells him that she feels she let him down during the recent battle, but Shiroe reassures her. Akatsuki has always been with him and he’s come to depend on her. The music starts up once again and the Adventurers pair off for dancing. Funny that Isuzu still sees Rudy as a dog! LOL Sergiatte even asks Henrietta for a dance. Seeing a way to show his gratitude to Akatsuki, Shiroe asks her to dance. She declines! Brushing aside her refusal, Shiroe takes the blushing Akatsuki’s hand. Too sweet!

Lenessia receives a huge welcome upon her entrance into Akikhabara. Shiroe spreads the news about the loss of memories as a rumor, but it still created a bit of a scare. And Minori overhears more bad things about Shiroe that she doesn’t like, but she doesn’t share them with Shiroe either. Autumn arrives and Akihabara is going to have a festival. And Marielle has it all planned out! LOL

The Scale Festival is about to start, and everyone is excited. I love the Lenessia carvings. I want one! It looks like Shiroe is going to be in demand as the other half of a couple for the cake buffet contest. But Shiroe is having his own problems with an abundance of paperwork.

Akatsuki wants to invite Shiroe to the festival and the cake buffet, but she has a hard time extending the invitation. The red bean bun scene was really cute. But just as Akatsuki got up the nerve to ask Shiroe, Minori pops up and asks him first. Not to be outdone, Akatsuki asks him as well. Which girl will he choose? What a dilemma!
Minori wants to improve Shiroe’s reputation, and Isuzu promises to help her by coordinating her outfit for the date. Akatsuki isn’t doing too well since Shiroe promised to go to the cake buffet with both her and Minori. I know Akatsuki wanted him to herself. Then it suddenly dawns on Akatsuki that this will be a DATE! That throws the poor girl into a panic.
Akatsuki has nothing to wear and knows she will need help. Henrietta is already feeling that silent call for help, although I think Akatsuki would prefer anyone but her. LOL But did she really have to go to men for help?

It’s the day of the festival and Shiroe shows up at the cake buffet with his two dates. I like how Akatsuki was giving Minori the evil eye. Both girls looked very cute in their outfits, and Shiroe compliments both of them. It’s funny that all the other couples are getting slices of cake and yet Shiroe and the girls are expected to eat entire cakes! I suppose that’s the price for having two dates. LOL

Unfortunately, this situation is not helping his reputation as he becomes the target of the other jealous couples. Akatsuki embarrasses Shiroe by feeding him and then of course, Minori must do the same. This is going to be a disaster, and even Shiroe would prefer fighting an enemy right now, than to be the center of attention like this. Very soon, an expanded Shiroe leaves the café with his dates. They didn’t win the contest – there was just too much cake!

Being so stuffed, Shiroe decides to go home and rest. Minori goes off to buy him some tea for his digestion, leaving him alone with Akatsuki, but I guess nothing much happened. Shiroe later deals with a stomachache and suggests the cake buffet to Souji. Evil villain with glasses! LOL Shiroe begins to doubt himself as a guild master. He decides to take Henrietta’s advice, and spend time walking around and talking to people. But Akatsuki shows up.

They end up talking and watching the festival from the balcony. Akatsuki is concerned that either Shiroe did not like the cake, or he did not have fun earlier. Shiroe reassures her and notes that Akatsuki didn’t eat much cake. She tells him that she wasn’t there for the cake. Hint! Hint! But that just goes over Shiroe’s head. They are both awkward and don’t know what to say to one another.

Suddenly, Akatsuki startles Shiroe as she approaches him and strokes his face. But Shiroe thinks she’s role playing as “lord and servant”. So dense! LOL This would be the perfect time for Akatsuki to kiss him, but I know that won’t happen. Besides, Minori was about to bring Shiroe the tea, and witnessed the tender moment between Akatsuki and Shiroe. That just crushed her and Minori runs away. Minori is surprised to realize that Akatsuki likes Shiroe – and that she likes him as well.

How could Minori think Shiroe was hers? Not only would Shiroe be clueless in that regard, but there is a vast age difference as well. I don’t think a college guy would date a middle school girl. Minori probably just has a bad crush on her mentor and teacher, but I do feel bad for her. Tohya finds her crying and she ends up sharing her feelings with him. But Tohya already knew that Minori liked Shiroe – and so does everyone else – except Shiroe of course. LOL It was pretty funny when Minori thought Tohya liked him too – that way! Tohya reassures and encourages his sister. Now, Minori remains hopeful. I wonder what she will do next.

This goblin arc is pretty neat!
Rudy dies, since we find out he’s one of the People of the Land, which is a bit sad, though the next episode preview made it clear, it isn’t really as permanent as one would think.

But man, Crusty sure does love killing, a bit too much if you ask me.
