Plastic Memories

Episode 10 –

Spoiler

So, it really happened. Kazuki did it and Isla and Tsukasa are no longer partners. Tsukasa is paired with Constance and Isla is paired with Kazuki once again. But afterwards, Kazuki wonders if she made the right decision. She takes Isla hime with her, but has no idea what to do with her, and ends up drinking all night. In the morning, Kazuki remembers nothing of what she did during the night. I had to feel for Isla! LOL

Tsukasa lets his coworkers know about the change in partners and that Kazuki did it because of office romances not being allowed. Everyone is confused by that since Kauzki herself once had an office romance and at no time was anything ever said about office romances not being allowed. During a meeting, Tsukasa protests the change in partners and Kazuki admits the office romance rule was just a fib, but she also tells him that Isla said it would be better if things stayed the way they are. There she goes protecting him again! It also sounds like Kazuki is going to help them, but that may also be just a fib.

Then Tsukasa hears some horror stories about the way Kazuki handles things and starts to worry about Isla. However, the new partners go on to do their jobs. Constance tells Tsukasa some things about Kazuki and Isla from their previous partnership, surprising him. And Kazuki can see how much Isla has changed from being with Tsukasa. Meanwhile, Constance makes Tsukasa remember some of those changes.

Kazuki tries to make Isla see that she belongs with Tsukasa; however, the stubborn girl is still trying to protect him and insists that things must stay as they are. Kazuki tells Isla that if she turns away from Tsukasa now, it will only leave him with even more painful memories and regrets later on. This later gives Isla something to think about, before coming to an important decision. The next morning, in front of the entire office, Isla explains to Tsukasa why she rejected him. She begins to cry as she tells him that this is no longer what she wants. Isla tells Tsukasa that she wants to make memories with him “till the very end”. Then she tells him that she loves him! Yay! The whole office is happy for them too, and almost everyone has a tear in their eye – including Kazuki (and me).

Now that Isla and Tsukasa are officially in a relationship, they have no idea how to act around each other. I suppose living together makes it pretty awkward as well. Tsukasa asks Isla for a dinner date, but although Isla accepts, it sounds more like a business arrangement than a date. LOL They are just too nervous! A few of their coworkers tease them, making them feel worse, but they also give them advice. I’m just not sure how good that advice may be.

Michiru is going to help Isla with some cooking, but Isla has no idea what Tsukasa’s favorite dishes are. Constance comes up with the idea that Isla and Tsukasa should just spend time cooking together. They decide to make rice omelettes. But Tsukasa wants to come up with a romantic surprise for Isla. He has no clue and finally asks Isla what she wants. She just wants things to go on as usual and admits how nervous she is. She says that just spending time with him is special to her.

That night, they make the rice omelettes together. It seems that Isla isn’t a very good cook! She draws a heart on her omelette with ketchup, but then gets embarrassed and tries to erase it. Tsukasa draws a heart on his omelette too. Although they don’t look very good, both of the cooks declare that the omelettes taste delicious. That night, Tsukasa catches Isla writing in her diary and she lets him see what she wrote, which makes him very happy. He tells her that the following night will be curry night! It’s nice to see their relationship progressing, but I just wish that they could have more time together.

Spoiler

I see everyone in the office is trying to help Tsukasa and Isla have some good final memories. With so many things to do, the couple takes the following day off. Isla experiences her very first movie and ends up holding Tsukasa’s hand. She later gives him a flimsy excuse for doing so, but Tsukasa tells her that she can hold his hand any time she likes.

Isla is afraid to sleep at night now, fearing that she will never wake up again. Tsukasa reassures her and suggests that they take off another day since they had so much fun. But that brings on another of Isla’s fears and Tsukasa reassures her again, telling her that they will return to work.

When Tsukasa asks for another assignment, Kazuki gives him Isla’s retrieval agreement to sign. It hit Tsukasa pretty hard – and me as well. I’ve no idea how I’m going to get through the rest of this anime. Isla later gives Tsukasa instructions on how to take care of her herbs and make her tea blends. I am already tearing up.

One evening, Tsukasa shows Isla her retrieval agreement and tells her that he was asked to sign it. She tells him that it’s fine – in fact she wants him to sign it. Tsukasa gets a little emotional and tells Isla that he has thought about them running away together. Isla hugs him and tells him that she is causing him pain. As Isla watches him, Tsukasa signs the agreement and Isla hugs him again, thanking him.

That night, they sit up together and talk about their last job the following day. Isla holds his hand and puts her head on his shoulder. The job goes off without a hitch and Tsukasa tells Isla their job is over, but Isla reminds him that there is one more as she takes his hand. The couple gets a message to return to the office for a “wrap” party. The party is in full swing when they arrive and they join in the fun.

On the way home, Isla tells Tsukasa how happy she is and that she has no regrets, thanks to him. Tsukasa asks what she says each time they make a retrieval and Isla whispers in his ear – “I hope that one day, you’ll be reunited with the one you cherish.” And I am crying again. Tsukasa keeps walking. I’m sure he’s crying as well. How will I ever get through the last episode???

Episode 13 –

Spoiler

It looks like Tsukasa and Isla were up all night again. As they await the dawn, they read her diary together as they hold hands. The sun rises and Isla says it’s their last day. They clean the apartment, but get so dirty in the process, that they bathe together. That turns out to be a water war between them. After they dress, Isla takes one last look around the apartment. She leaves a note on the table and goes off to work with Tsukasa.

They are early, but begin the work day as usual. It was a little funny to see Tsukasa making the tea. Kazuki arrives early, having a feeling that they would be there. She takes away Isla’s ID and forces the couple to take the day off, even to the point of chasing them out of the office! It turns out that everyone came in early to check on the couple. They all wish they could have said goodbye and Kazuki just stares at Isla’s ID. And my waterworks have begun in earnest!

After they water the herbs, Tsukasa and Isla end up going to the amusement park. Tsukasa gives Isla a really fun day, but freezes a bit when he sees the sun begin to set. He recovers quickly and suggests to Isla that they go on more rides. She can see what he’s doing, but just aggress with him. A while later, the park lights come on and the sky is dark. Yet, they continue their date at the park and Isla notes that everyone there is smiling. By this time of the day, everyone has sad but contented smiles, as well as happy memories. An announcement is made that the park is closing.

Tsukasa looks devastated and doesn’t move. Holding his hand, Isla reminds him that the park is closing. She doesn’t look too happy as she reminds him again. Finding her resolve, she pulls Tsukasa along, saying “Let’s go” and gets permission to take Tsukasa on the ferris wheel.

It starts off as a very sad ride as Isla tells Tsukasa that she wishes she could have spent more time with him. A very sad Tsukasa agrees with her. Isla says that she wonders what Tsukasa will be doing in the future since she won’t be around to see him. Isla tries to keep the conversation going and tells Tsukasa that he will be fine. Tsukasa can hardly answer her and just stares at the floor.

Isla tells Tsukasa one thing she loves about him and forces him to say something that he loves about her. He says something and this goes back and forth for a little while until Isla say that Tsukasa holds back his tears and tries so hard to smile when he’s in pain. She tells him that this worries her. Tsukasa finally looks at her and says her name. She tells him that she had a good life and was very happy. She opens her closed hand to him to reveal a ring. Isla tells Tsukasa that it’s time for the dream to end. She tells him that she wants it to end here, on the ferris wheel, with him.

At the sight of the ring, Tsukasa’s eyes widen and he begins to get emotional. He reaches for Isla with tears running down his face. She takes his hand and tells him that it’s the first time he’s let her see him cry. She wipes his tears and thanks him for crying for her. She kisses him and then stretches his mouth into a smile. Isla gives him a sad smile and he returns it, still crying. Tsukasa puts the ring on Isla’s finger. He hugs her and I cry harder as he tells her that one day he hopes that she will be reunited with the one she cherishes. Isla cries as they share a final kiss.

Kazuki is waiting for them on the bench she used to share with Isla, holding her ID. Tsukasa walks over to her, carrying Isla. Kazuki says that Isla looks peaceful as she tucks the ID under Isla’s folded hands. With tears in his eyes, Tsukasa agrees with her. Kazuki puts her hand on his shoulder and tells him that he did a good job, “right up till the end”. Tsukasa loses it and falls to his knees, still holding Isla.

Now for the note Isla left him. In it, she tells Tsukasa that she has gone to “sleep”. She talks about her time with the Terminal Service and how wonderful everyone there is. It seems that everyone has received a note, where Isla thanks them, saying that she was happy and proud to work with them. And most everyone cries.

After the credits, Tsukasa returns to the office from a nine month training program. He’s reunited with all of his co-workers and is happy to be back with them. Then Tsukasa is introduced to his new partner, and shakes hands. The face isn’t seen, but I’d like to think it’s Isla with a new personality. That would be a nice ending. Well, for all the sadness, this was a wonderful anime. Nice music, good story, and great characters! Now if I could just stop crying……
