I have back-up copies of my purchased movies, TV episodes, and songs(from iTunes) on my external hard drive (750 GB, ~690GB) 
planning on get one or two more external storage drive(s) either Solid State(more reliable) or High Density(cheaper) Computer can crash but as long as the hard drive still works it is possible to retrieve files, content, etc
Can’t make back-up copies of dvd(s) or blu ray(s) without it being illegal
