Revolutionary Girl Utena / Shōjo Kakumei Utena

Episode 28 -

spoiler

As Utena and Anthy watch Juri during fencing practice, a stranger challenges her. It turns out to be Ruka, the former captain of the Fencing Club, returning from an illness. Juri lets him take over the club again and he seems to be a huge hit with all the girls in the school. He finds out that Shiori polished his sword every day while he was gone. He kisses her and they seem to become a couple.

Ruka meets with Juri and she tells him to stay away from Shiori. He says that if he falls in love, he has the right to pursue her. Later that night, Utena tells Anthy that she is getting a bad feeling about Ruka. Shiori runs to meet Ruka in the yard. Juri sees them together and as Ruka kisses Shiori, he looks right at Juri. He knows she is watching them kiss and he smiles at her. Juri feels that he knows everything about her. The next day, she tries to warn Shiori about him, but Shiori ignores her, accusing her instead of being jealous.

But that night when Shiori goes to meet Ruka, Touga is there instead. The car arrives and Akio takes her and Ruka for a drive. As Ruka takes Shiori to a “fantastic place” in the backseat, Akio does his jump onto the hood again. So sexy! And all that talk of power and throbbing engines… Anyway, Ruka and Shiori challenge Utena to a duel.

This time the car races around the outside with Shiori as Ruka and Utena duel. Utena wins and the car crashes, but Shiori says they can win the next time. Ruka insults her, blaming her, and finally telling her that the sword she was polishing wasn’t even his.

Juri meets with Ruka again and warns him to stay away from Shiori. He says that it’s her choice and Juri would understand that more than anyone. He walks away and Juri yells out after him – “what are you after?” I wonder as well.

Ruka breaks up with Shiori in front of the entire school. Utena can’t get Juri to talk with Shiori and tells Anthy about it. Anthy almost says something to Utena, but changes her mind. That’s twice now!

Shiori doesn’t come to school and Juri finally visits her, but is rejected. Juri talks to Ruka, asking him to take Shiori back, but he says he won’t. He insults Shiori, making Juri mad enough to hit him. He blocks her fists and throws her back against the wall, suggesting that maybe she should be his girlfriend instead. She says no, but he just has to give that “you know you want me” line. He kisses Juri and she pushes him away, but he has her locket in his hand. Ruka drops it to the floor and prepares to step on it, but Juri slaps his face and saves the locket. Ruka says that he changed his mind and will take Shiori back. Juri challenges him to a duel instead, saying that if she loses, she’ll do anything he wants.

She loses and gets taken for a ride in the car. I liked when he told Touga to say his line. Funny. Ruka tells Juri that they should join together to defeat Utena and Juri agrees in order to prevent Shiori from being hurt again. Juri challenges Utena and this time Juri shows up with Ruka. The duel was a little different this time in that the car did not circle the arena and Ruka didn’t ride in it. As they fight, Utena hits Juri’s locket instead of the rose and breaks it. It hits the ground and shatters, causing Juri to concede the duel. Ruka swears he’ll make it up to her but disappears and doesn’t come back to school. Juri again takes over the fencing club.

The shadow girls appear late in this episode and actually make sense this time, but I wonder if they’re right.

Ep. 29

Really felt bad for Juri when the locket shattered. Wonder if that will have long term affects on her.

I watched the first couple of episodes of this on the player. I think it’s going to be a great watch, and am going to wait to have a marathon viewing of this somewhere down the road. Since there are a bunch of episodes left, I’ll be able to catch up later.
Slick

ruka is a b*tch

slickwolfie: I tryed so hard to marathon this show, but it wore me out. I needed a brake from it. Not sure why, but this is not a show easy to marathon, at least for me. Might be different for you though. I really love the show, but you gata take it small bits at a time.

daphne is better though

What does this have to do with daphne? No offense but what are you talking about?

Best to not hit the brick wall.

I agree - I don’t think I could marathon it either. Besides being so many episodes, I think it would just be overwhelming. So much happens in the story that I like watching one episode a week better so I can take it all in.

But I wish you luck Slick and I look forward to your thoughts on it!

The same situation for me. I got behind on this show when it first started showing on VOD, so I had to do some marathoning to catch up. I was soo worn our after watching the first 6 episodes at once that I had to step away from it for a week or two. :S This is a show that I literally watch one ep a week (usually the one that’s about to disappear from the VOD). I really like this show, but for me, a little at a time goes a long way.

Episode 30 -

Nice episode! Wakaba comes for tea and tries to make an impression on Akio but again Utena has to remind her that Akio has a fiancé. However, I think she said it more to remind herself. Wakaba says that it doesn’t matter when love is involved, and Akio asks what they are talking about, making Utena blush. Staring at her ring later, she looks a little torn between her prince and Akio.

Akio shows Utena his car and I thought it was interesting the way he was caressing it while they spoke. But Wakaba shows up and persuades Akio to take her for a drive and won’t let Utena go with them, telling her that three’s a crowd on a “date”. As Utena watches them drive off, I think she may have been feeling a little jealousy. And when Utena later reminds Wakaba of Akio’s fiancé again, Wakaba accuses her of being jealous as well.

At one point, I thought she was going to talk to Anthy about her confused feelings, but the car came and interrupted them. Since Utena hurt her ankle, Akio offers to take her to the hospital. She’d like Anthy to go with them, but Akio tells her that Wakaba had said three’s a crowd on a “date” and leaves Anthy behind.

When they get back, Akio starts to help her out of the car, but removes her shoe instead and caresses her sore ankle. Utena calls him a playboy because he likes to makes girls feel special and says he’s “dangerous”. Akio says that they are similar and pushes her back in the car and kisses her. I got shivers! What a great kiss!

I thought it was interesting how they used three candles in the episode to show Utena’s feelings getting stronger for Akio. But I wonder why three? Akio, Utena, and Anthy maybe? Or Akio, the prince and Anthy? By the time Akio kisses Utena, the second candle has gone out, but I wasn’t sure why Anthy was shown holding the candles. Perhaps she is the third candle or maybe Anthy wants Utena to fall for her brother – not sure.

That night Utena talks to Anthy about “wrong love” and Anthy disagrees with her a little bit – probably because of the relationship she has with her brother – and says that some love can’t be controlled. Utena asks if she loves someone and Anthy says that she has a prince of her own. Her brother?

Akio and Touga are going for a drive and are talking about Utena. They are talking at the same time – which was annoying, but I think Touga says that he’s fallen for Utena. This is interesting. Wonder how Akio feels about that? Is he even in love with Utena himself or just using her? He is a playboy after all.

I noticed that the candles were on the table at breakfast, still with only one lit, when the fiancé shows up with her mother. The mother wants to talk to Akio alone and questions him about her daughter and the fact he hasn’t seen her much. He says he’s been busy, but kneels in front of her and removes her shoe much like he did to Utena. The scene fades out but it’s obvious what happens. His own future mother-in-law! Amazing! Well, another for the collection, I suppose.

As Wakaba prattles on about meeting the fiancé, an agonized Utena refuses to believe that she’s in love with Akio, saying that the only one she loves is her prince. With that, the third candle goes out…

Episode 30

I agree, Wicca…

spoiler

… it’s hard to tell if Utena is trying to convince herself or everyone else that’s she’s in love with her Prince or if she’s falling for Akio.

Is it “Distance makes the heart grow stronger”? Or “Out of sight, out of mind”?

I’m really starting to wish that she’d just punch out her ‘friend’ Wakaba! Geez, annoying much? She stands up to practically everyone else.

And, why on earth does Akio’s fiance’s mother have the same last name?

spoiler

I think Utena is just really torn between the prince and Akio. She hasn’t seen the prince in a very long time, after meeting him only briefly. I think he has become somewhat idealized in her eyes. However, a flesh and blood Akio is right there. He has a very powerful sexual magnetism and is quite the ladies man. I think she is just drawn to him as many of the other women in the series are. Or perhaps it is because he resembles her prince, although she may only realize it subconsciously? And now that Touga has fallen for her, I think it will be interesting to see what happens next.

I agree about Wakaba!! And as for sharing the same last name - it may just be a common name, or maybe they are very distantly related, or maybe they threw it in to confuse everyone!

What do you think the three candles stand for? I had another thought on it - perhaps it was the strength/memory of her love for her prince going “out”, but still not sure why there were three. The three phases of love possibly?

Ep. 31

Poor brother obsessed Nanami finds out Touga is not her blood brother. Also at the end looks like she caught Akio and Anthy in a compromising position.

Episode 31 -

spoiler

I am just enjoying this story arc more and more. This was a very enjoyable sexy episode with plenty of funny moments, no duel and no car.

Touga is still a playboy, but I wonder if he is taking lessons from Akio as well.

At home, Touga is sitting on the terrace with Nanami and gets up to take a shower. He asks Nanami if she’d like to join him and there is an extremely long pause before he says – “just kidding” and goes inside. Nanami’s face is beat red and getting redder by the second. I thought it was going to explode!

Nanami is in her room, looking at photos of her and Touga when they were children and when they shared everything – meals, baths, and bed. She is depressed and worried that they are drifting apart. She then sneaks into the bathroom and watches Touga shower for a long time. If it weren’t for the spinning rose in the corner, I would have thought my VOD froze. But it would have been fine to have it freeze right there! :stuck_out_tongue: Nanami takes Touga’s phone and leaves, but he knew she was there all along! Maybe that’s why he posed for her.

At school, Nanami watches Touga surrounded by tons of girls. The phone rings and Nanami tells the girl on the other end that Touga has broken up with her. The phone rings again and she does the same. If this is her plan for getting Touga to herself, it’s going to take an awfully long time! Nanami is in a foul mood, full of jealousy and she sees Touga trying to ask Utena out on a date, but Utena turns him down.

Nanami confronts her and demands that Utena give her back her brother. She accuses Utena of “hitting” on her brother and gets so agitated, that she begins to fall down the stairs. Akio saves her, but she doesn’t know who he is. Next, she is at home with him, Anthy, and Utena and he is wrapping her ankle, explaining who he is. Akio gives Utena the first aid kit to put away and their hands touch. A very intense, sexually charged moment! Nanami is forced to remind them that she’s there and the spell is broken. I wonder what would have happened if Nanami hadn’t been there.

Anthy brings in shaved ice and spoon feeds Akio. Nanami discovers that they are brother and sister. I just had to laugh at the way Anthy and Akio were carrying on with the shaved ice – more like lovers than brother and sister and Nanami seemed envious of their relationship, probably because that’s how she’d like it to be with Touga and herself.

Later, Nanami tries to make Utena jealous of the feelings between Anthy and Akio and she really comes very close to the truth. She then accuses Utena of being in love with Akio herself and realizes it’s true. Utena sputters, but doesn’t exactly deny it either – has she accepted it finally? Did anyone else notice that the statues kept changing here? Was it supposed to mean something?

Nanami eventually finds out that Touga is not her real blood related brother and is devastated. There goes her fantasy! There is a knock on her bedroom door and Touga enters wearing only a robe. He asks if she’s seen his phone and she turns red with guilt. Touga comes closer to her and checks her for fever. He offers to kiss her goodnight and she gasps. There is a pause and he says – “just kidding” and walks out.

Nanami doesn’t want to go home anymore and stays with others so she won’t have to. She even makes a date to stay with Mitsuru and he gets so obviously excited at the prospect of having her with him. Akio overhears her making the date and says that it’s against school policy not to sleep in their assigned rooms. He asks Nanami to accompany him to the chairman’s residence, where he tells Anthy and Utena that Nanami will be staying with them.

When Akio later talks to Nanami, she asks him if he wants to know why she ran away, but he says he doesn’t because he’s “only interested in turning the Chairman’s Residence into a harem.” Nanami is stunned and there is a short pause before he says – “just kidding”. But at the same time in the other room, Utena is asking Anthy if she ever gets “the feeling Akio’s trying to make a harem?” Utena remembers the kiss and then says – “no, Akio isn’t like that” and mentions his upcoming marriage. By saying that, is she only trying to convince herself that there are no feelings between them?

As the girls try to figure out the bed situation, Touga comes to take Nanami home. She says that she can’t go with him because they really aren’t brother and sister, which surprises everyone in the room. Touga says – “you found out?” Nanami considers her confused feelings and cries, asking him to leave. Is the forbidden so much better? She so desperately wanted a relationship with him when she thought they were related, and now that they aren’t and she could have a relationship with him, she doesn’t want him. I just don’t get it.

That night Nanami wanders into the main room and comes upon Akio and Anthy in the aftermath of lovemaking. But why is Anthy’s dueling dress there? Nanami is traumatized by what she has seen. To think that this brother and sister have the very relationship that she wanted so badly to have with Touga! I wonder what she’ll do now. I am very curious to see what happens next!

The incest undertones in this are just a bit creepy. I don’t think it helps that Nanami is perhaps the most annoying anime character EVER!

I love her blade design though.
I want one of those!

I’ll give you that, but if we could just get her to shut her mouth! LOL

Episode 32 -

spoiler

The next morning, Nanami still has Touga’s phone and listens to his messages. She thinks about what she saw between Akio and Anthy. At breakfast, she destroys the slice of lemon in her tea with a spoon, and when Anthy offers her the jam pot, she slaps it out of her hand. Utena tells her to apologize, but instead Nanami asks Utena if she really doesn’t realize what is going on.

Touga meets with another girl and knows that Nanami is watching, so he tells the girl that he doesn’t have a sister. The girl says that he was always the perfect big brother and he says that it was all just an act because his father ordered him to treat her as a beloved sister. He then calls Nanami a “common, boring girl”. The girl turns and it’s Keiko! She says that it “serves her right” and has no sympathy for Nanami at all. Nanami walks in the greenhouse and slaps her, knocking her to the floor. She tells Touga that he deserves better than a girl like Keiko and Keiko then slaps her, knocking her to the floor. Touga says that she will understand someday and leaves with Keiko. What game is he playing now? He knows how Nanami feels about him and yet is deliberately hurting her. Nanami says that she is one of many now and that there is nothing to tie them together. The phone rings again and she cries as she throws the phone away.

Akio is spending some time with his fiancé. She looks dazed or possibly drugged and he is feeding her a piece of apple. It’s getting late and a hungry Utena is wondering about dinner. Anthy offers to make a snack and begins to saw a block of ice in two. She says she will make shaved ice and I can’t help thinking about the last time she made shaved ice. Utena decides to see what Akio and his fiancé are up to. Perhaps she is a little jealous and wants to interrupt them. Anthy stops her, asking her to give them some time to be alone. Interesting that she brought the saw with her. I wonder if Utena had decided to go into the other room anyway would Anthy have used the saw to stop her. Nanami sees her holding the saw and says – “this girl scares me” and Anthy thanks her. This made me laugh - I do the same thing!

Nanami and Utena are in bed that night and Nanami finds something else to complain about. The conversation turns to Akio and Anthy, but Utena is still innocent of the relationship between them. Nanami is annoyed that she still doesn’t get it. The phone rings – it still works after she threw it? – and a girl’s voice starts to speak about being lonely and not being able to sleep. Is it supposed to be Nanami? In losing Touga, she is also lonely and can’t sleep. As Nanami asks who is speaking, Akio’s voice says that it’s “the End of the World” and that Touga is waiting for her before the phone call cuts off.

Nanami goes home and Touga really is waiting for her. She asks him if he knows who the End of the World is and he asks her why she wants to know. Nanami says that she still loves him, but they can never go back to the way things were. She tells him that she has requested a transfer to another school because she doesn’t want to be just “another unanswered phone call”, but wants to know one last thing about the “real” him. Touga shows her an envelope which turns out to be her transfer request. He gives his line, the phone rings and the car comes crashing through the window. When Nanami answers the phone, it is Akio speaking to her from the car in front of her and she says – “you’re the one?” Is he End of the World after all? Is Akio the one that has been sending the duelists the notes? Has he been manipulating all of them right from the beginning?

While Akio drives, Touga and Nanami are in the back seat and Nanami wants to know who Akio is. She says that he isn’t normal and she saw him do something but she can’t say what because it is too awful. Again, I don’t understand why she is so horrified, when she wanted the same thing with Touga. Akio laughs and says that her eyes only see her own perception of things. I now wonder then if Akio and Anthy are really brother and sister. Akio also tells Nanami that she is “trapped in her own world” and that she has a “limited point of view”. She wants to know what he’s talking about and Touga kisses her, but she pushes him away. Not sure why she did that, but I bet it’s the first time it happened to Touga! Touga echoed my own thoughts when he asked her if that wasn’t what she wanted. Nanami says that it isn’t – what?? – and Touga asks her what she does want as Akio does his flip onto the hood of the car thing.

Nanami confronts Keiko and Keiko tells her off. It quickly switches to the next scene where Nanami slaps Anthy, knocking her down. Nanami is surrounded by three beat up girls, so I guess Nanami is back to her old, bossy self. Nanami says that she’s going to prove that she isn’t like her and challenges Anthy to a duel. To make sure she accepts, she has poor little Chuchu as a hostage.

The car brings Touga and Nanami to the arena and I liked the glamorous way Nanami was posing on the hood. So vain! Nanami tells Utena that she wants to surpass everything and Utena calls her a fool. I found it interesting that while Anthy pulled out Utena’s sword, Touga pulled out his own – I wonder why Nanami didn’t do it. The car does its usual race around the track, but Touga stands next to Anthy. As she fights, Nanami says that her brother was part of her identity and now she is nothing without him. There is a flashback of her giving him the kitten and Utena tries to assure that as long as the feelings are there, there is a chance, but Nanami says that she knows “where those feelings lead”. Is it possible that she hadn’t actually thought of the physical side of a relationship with her brother? Nanami loses the duel and wonders what is left for her. She thinks that she is “just another fly in an enormous swarm” and I was reminded of the frog in the last episode. I wonder if the frog doesn’t represent Touga or Akio and the flies the women they gather.

Akio and Touga are in bed and Akio asks him if he will ever tell Nanami the truth. Touga hasn’t made up his mind yet, but Akio questions if they really are related by blood and Touga confirms that they are. He says that Nanami was still a baby when they were taken in by the Kiryuu family and Akio tells him that he should clear up the misunderstanding. Touga says that he finds “the idea of a brother and sister not related by blood much more romantic, don’t you?” and Akio calls him an “awful brother”. The phone rings again, but it was shown to be left in the car. I’m really starting to feel sorry for Nanami in all this and I wonder why Touga is being so cruel.
