Revolutionary Girl Utena / Shōjo Kakumei Utena

Episode 33 -

spoiler

This was a very odd episode that asked some strange questions. It also recapped a few things. The first few minutes dealt with the question of eternity. It showed Touga and Saionji as children again finding little Utena in a coffin and they speak of eternity. The narrator says that “Akio showed the girl that there are things which can be eternal and saved her”. Akio and Utena are in a parked car and he has his arm around her, pointing out the stars.

A few key phrases are also repeated throughout the episode. For instance when Saionji and Utena are dueling, he tells her that “the Rose Bride has no will of her own” but this isn’t true at all, is it?

Utena is in a hotel room watching TV. The (shadow) girls on TV sound like they are talking about Utena’s duels and say that “the challenger loses by a hair” and “the champ’s fighting was superb tonight”. Then they say something odd that is definitely a clue – “the king of imposters has been on top for eight weeks now” – “just four more wins and he goes on to challenge for the glory of the grand champion imposter king”. Utena turns off the TV and talks to someone else in the room – “that champion is really something” – “do you think he’s got what it takes to be the grand champion imposter king?” – “I wish I could compete for it”. This is a little confusing – I’m not sure if the imposter king is Akio or the challenger/champion is Utena when the prince comes to help her during the duels.

There is some more recap – this time with the twins, Miki and Kozue, and the duel with them, when Kozue tells Miki that “when everything around you is impure, you’ll have to become impure as well” - “the only way to get what you want is to lose your purity”. It also shows again the back of their step mother to be that looks like Anthy in her dueling dress.

Then it is Ruka and Juri’s turn with Ruka telling her – “if I fall in love with someone on campus, don’t I have a right to pursue them?” There is a cut scene to the car with Akio talking to the radio station (shadow) girls about miracles and he mentions miraculous powers. The duel with Juri and Utena is shown and the narrator says that Ruka “wanted to give the power to grant miracles to the one he loved” – “wanted to free her from something”. Akio says that “miracles happen everyday – we just don’t notice them”.

Throughout all this are scenes of Utena in the hotel room, but it still isn’t shown who she’s talking to. Then she’s lying in bed saying - “I can’t believe we stayed up this late” – “I hate this” – “what’ll I do?” – “I can’t think of anything else”. She starts to talk about what to make for lunch the following day and says – “what else is there?” – “what should I do?” At this point it’s pretty obvious what’s going on and that she really isn’t talking about lunch. She says – “what should I do?” – “I don’t know” – “it’s no good” – and begins to cry. Then she looks up at someone and says – “tell me, what is eternity?” There’s a scene of the car on the road and there is writing on the ground which says “stop” five times. Then it goes back to Utena where you see her hair, her naked shoulder and a dark hand holding hers. Again, very obvious what just happened.

Akio is in the car and on the phone with Anthy, who is in the planetarium because she “wasn’t interested in seeing the real stars” but tells Akio that she hopes he got the roses she sent him. Akio says that he “got them” – “very nice” – “well done Anthy” and hangs up. He looks over and Utena is in the passenger seat dozing. He touches her cheek and she opens her eyes to find him smiling at her and he says “beautiful stars and a wonderful night”. Utena thinks – “I never expected we’d end up doing what we did – all I’ve come to do today was to deliver the roses”. Ok, I’m reading all kinds of stuff into this and it sounds like Anthy set Utena up! And the car shows up in the end credits again.

spoiler

I, too, thought this episode was very weird.

I certainly wasn’t expecting any sort of recap episode. At first, I thought that perhaps Utena was talking to Anthy or Chu-Chu, silly me.

Also, when the line “the Rose Bride has no will of her own”, I thought, no, it’s Akio & Utena that have no will… they seem to be doing what Anthy wants.

I hope Utena doesn’t have to be ‘pure’ in order to win the duels, or she’s in deep doo-doo! Unless Akio is her prince! This is very confusing…

I have to agree with you. Utena is so convoluted that it almost makes Evangelion seem high concept!

spoiler

I think the particular recaps they focused on were all key clues and therefore they had to mention them again.

I do think that getting Akio and Utena together was orchestrated by Anthy - perhaps by pushing Akio and Utena together, she can free herself from Akio. I’m sure that the “roses” she sent to Akio was Utena herself and that she meant for something to happen between them. “Roses” might also symbolize the “deflowering” of Utena.

I think the whole thing about being impure and losing one’s purity to get what you want might also be true. It may not be necessary for Utena to be “pure” to win the duels, but now that she is “impure” will she get what she wants? Her prince or something else entirely?

As for “falling in love on campus” and having a right to pursue it - that definitely describes Utena. Not sure about Akio, since he’s an alley cat anyway, and Utena may be just a means to an end for him. And perhaps now Utena has also been “freed” from loving her prince too. Still, I’m not sure about miracles or eternity - perhaps this is still to come. I did think it interesting that Akio showed Utena the real stars, while Anthy preferred the fake ones. That has to mean something too.

And the whole “imposter king” thing was interesting and will be fun to try to figure out too. I do think that Akio is one of the imposters spoken of, but I’m not sure who the other might be - too many possibilities right now - Utena, her prince or maybe even Anthy.

It’s completely confusing, but fun trying to piece all this together!

LOL. If I had to sum up this show in one word, it would be bizarre.

Episode 34

What? Seriously what the hell is going on here? Usually the flashback episode resolves questions, but now I have even more. Is Anthy the villain or does she need to be rescued? She did give Akio that creepy little smile when he asked her if she must still torture him. Was Utena even watching that play? She may be noble, but I agree with Nanami, that girl is clueless.

I agree that it is fun trying to piece it together. Just when you think you know where this show is going, it goes somewhere else.

Color me confused!

Episode 34 -

spoiler

As Anthy dresses after sleeping with Akio again, he says that “the stars are the stars – they belong to no one”. He seems to be referring to eternity again. When Anthy leaves, Akio asks – “must you still torture me?” I used to think that Akio was the one controlling this relationship and the duels. Now I’m not so sure. I’m beginning to think that Anthy is behind everything.

The shadow girls try to get Utena to join the Drama Club and invite her to one of their plays. I wonder if it will be a shadow play.

I thought it funny that when Akio took Utena’s and Anthy’s picture and then stepped into the next one himself and tried to put his arm around Utena, Anthy told Chuchu to “stop” and Akio dropped his arm. Anthy walks over and takes Chuchu off the camera and when she returns to Akio and Utena, she gets between them. Very interesting!

Utena invites Anthy and Akio to the play, but they are the only ones there. Not only that, it was quite a walk to the “theater” and the play does turn out to be a shadow play that tells the tale of the “Rose Prince”. More interesting stuff here. When the girls in the play speak of a witch, it shows Anthy. The story says that the witch lives in the castle in the air and an image is shown of the upside down castle, as well as images of the other duelists.

The witch plans to steal the “light of the world – that which is eternal” and that the light can bring the “power of miracles” and the “power to bring world revolution”. It turns out that the prince is the “light” and he gets sealed in the castle, but the witch is actually the prince’s little sister and when the actors speak of the “Rose Prince” it shows Akio. When they say that the prince cannot make his little sister a princess, it shows Anthy again. Once the world is covered in darkness, the witch “searches for young noble souls to sacrifice” - the duelists? When the shadow girls say “beware” Utena is shown and when they say that the witch is still around, Anthy is shown again – and she’s smiling!

Elsewhere, as Touga and Saionji spar, they talk of Utena. Touga says – “one night when she was just a child that girl was shown something eternal” and Saionji seems to finally realize that the little girl they found in the past was Utena.

Anthy goes to bed and leaves Akio and Utena alone. He seems to disturb her senses and keeps her confused about her feelings. She remembers when she was a little girl and met the prince – I’m sure now that it’s Akio. The prince back then showed her a silhouette of the witch and called her the “Rose Bride”. He says – “I wish she could die” but “she simply lives on in agony”. The witch can’t die because it’s her “punishment for taking the prince away from the girls of the world”.

Then there is a scene of a younger Akio and Anthy in a log cabin with an overworked fax machine (huh?) and Akio does not look well, yet the villagers are outside, demanding his help. He tries to get up and go to them, but Anthy won’t let him – she is worried that he is too weak and will die. She faces the crowd herself and tells them that she has sealed “Dios” away. The angry people call her a “witch” and the crowd attacks her. It looks like they kill her, but how is that possible?

The scene switches back to Utena as a little girl talking with the prince once again. The prince says that “she sacrificed herself to save her beloved prince even though she was the only one who truly loved him.” Utena runs over to her and the prince says – “and yet the price she loves is now no longer the prince she knew – now the prince has grown to become the End of the World.” Utena reaches out to the poor girl, but gets thrown back by some kind of barrier and the prince says – “all she has left is her suffering.”

Utena cries for her and the prince kisses away little Utena’s tears. He says that he’d like to help the witch, but can’t and that “the only one who can save her now is a prince she can believe in.” Utena vows to become a prince and save her and the prince says “if you never lose your nobility, even when you grow up, then you may be able to save her from her eternal torment” and gives her the ring. He says that she will probably forget everything he has shown her and even if she does remember, she’s a girl – not a prince. Utena insists that she will be a prince and the prince tells her that the “ring will lead you back to this place to save her one day.”

Utena wakes up next to Anthy and says that she dreamed of “something familiar but it’s faded away”. Utena asks Anthy if she’s slept and Anthy says that she was watching Utena sleep. Then Anthy asks – “but who are you really?”

And all this talk again of eternity! More clues to piece together!

Episode 35 -

spoiler

Utena is starting to remember things and just as she asks Anthy if they’ve met before, Akio interrupts them to invite Utena for a walk. That was a very interesting look Anthy gave them as they left. And Akio is still scheming with Touga. Not sure what the photo shoot was about, but it was very nice to watch!

Touga gives Utena earrings and says that they are from Akio, even though they are really from him. Why does Touga have a carrot? Touga says that he needs to speak with Utena and takes her horseback riding. The carrot must have been for the horse then. However, he gallops too fast and Utena falls off. Lucky for her that Akio just “happened” to be there to save her just in time.

When Akio and Touga meet again, Akio says that he’s “won the game” but Touga says that it’s a draw. Why is Akio lying in the middle of cactus plants? I looked it up and cactus plants symbolize endurance. Another interesting symbol. Just for fun I also looked up the meaning of carrots – “A reward offered for desired behavior; an inducement” – that makes sense too then for that earlier scene! I just love all these great little “extras” that drive me crazy!

Anyway, Akio thinks that Utena would make a good princess - not prince - and says that the next duel will be an interesting one; he wonders if it will be a princess to revolutionize the world, but this will “complicate things” so he really needs Touga to win the duel with Utena. By this time, Touga is holding a cactus plant as well and the flower “pops” open. Perhaps something will happen to his endurance during the duel.

Touga speaks with Saionji again about Utena, but when Saionji asks Touga if he loves her, it looks like some kind of press conference! But Touga does speak of finding Utena in the coffin and the fact that Akio “saved” her – or did he? Touga says that he wants to be like Akio and have the kind of power that he has. Funny that Saionji asks him if he’s sure that’s what he wants.

All this time, Utena thinks the earrings are from Akio and isn’t sure she should accept them, but as she sits outside with Anthy, she puts them on to show Chuchu. She looks at Anthy and gets another flash of memory but just can’t place it.

Episode 35

I’m so glad that you’re doing all the hard work, Wicca!

Why aren’t there any guys around here with nice bods who are willing to rip their shirts off at the drop of a hat?

The way that Anthy stands in the background all the time, quietly observing, I wonder if she reports back to Akio or if she keeps everything to herself? It seems like she’s always around Utena and sees almost everything that goes on.

I, too, wondered about that carrot and assumed it was for the horse; but the way he played around with it on the stairs… it was almost obscene.

You know, I’ve ridden behind people on the back of a horse and she must have a pretty weak grip. I can hold on hella-tight. Especially if it was a huge horse like that. But then, the story wouldn’t have progress onward.

And that Akio, what a great save… how the heck did he catch her anyway? Wish we could have seen that part.

I’m also glad you looked up that cactus thing, because that made no sense whatsoever to me. But, perhaps the reason that the flower ‘popped open’ for Touga is because he has so much power he can’t control it!

That scene with Saionji and all the microphones just cracked me up because they got to start posing and I was waiting for the inevitable shirt-ripping-off…

Since I’ve seen the next episode I won’t comment any further, but I did have a speculation about those looks that Anthy was giving Utena and it turned out that I was right (but I have no way to prove that now).

spoiler

Thanks! This show has just gotten so incredible. As for the guys with nice bods - perhaps we also need a good constant breeze to keep those shirts open and that hair blowing!

I’m sure now that Anthy has her own agenda. She is quickly losing that “innocent” look of hers and it’s getting to be a more calculating look.

I also had another idea about the carrot, but I’ll keep it clean and keep it to myself! But I will say just think about when he held it to his forehead.

I’ve ridden horses too, but never behind anyone. You’re pretty high off the ground on a large horse. I have no idea how Akio saved her. And a fall like that would surely have killed her.

Well, they had to “pose” at the press conference - there were cameras after all! I also looked up “camera” and it can be used as a legal term meaning “private”. Another interesting tidbit!

I’ll catch up on the rest soon!

Episode 36 -

Akio is still putting the moves on Utena. Juri tells Miki that Utena looks like an ordinary girl now. Miki says that he noticed that too and asks if it isn’t a good thing. Juri says that the school is changing and both her and Miki agree that the revolution is fast approaching, but Juri has an ominous feeling.

In a parody of Akio’s car scenes, Touga is on a motorcycle and has Saionji in the sidecar. It’s funny that Saionji’s helmet is barely hanging on to the back of his head – must be all that hair! Touga asks Saionji if he likes “the throbbing of the engine” and Saionji says that he “finds it rather irritating.” He says too that Touga has strange tastes, which he also finds annoying. Touga says that Saionji just doesn’t like it because he’s not driving and Saionji says that he doesn’t “like not being in control and I despise letting anyone get too deep into my heart.”

Saionji wants to know if Touga is going to do want End of the World wants and duel Utena. Touga thinks back to Akio telling him that Utena is a princess to be treasured. The scene also shows the cactus that he was holding in the last episode – endurance again? Akio laughs in the background. Perhaps he is laughing at Touga’s “endurance”.

Saionji says that it’s time “to rise from our coffins” and stands up in the sidecar, his pants open, his unbuttoned shirt and hair flying in the breeze and his helmet flapping off the back of his head. He says – “we must free ourselves from the coffins End of the World has prepared.” As Saionji continues to stand in the sidecar with his arms flung wide, Touga tells him “standing like that is dangerous” and Saionji says a very quiet “right” and sits down. Whole thing was hysterical!

Utena is in her room and wonders if Anthy is with Akio. The doorbell rings and it’s Touga, who asks Utena to come with him, saying that it’s “urgent”. Utena is annoyed, wondering what he wants so late at night, but he tells her that it concerns End of the World. He takes her to the dueling arena and she says that it feels strange to be there at night. Touga asks her if it feels “romantic” and Utena replies “no way”. Now it looks like Touga is putting the moves on Utena. Once on top, Utena looks up at the twinkling stars and the castle appears.

Touga and Utena continue stargazing and Touga gives Utena another line. Utena tells him to “just forget about all that and get to the point already.” Touga asks her if she’s in love with Akio and she wonders if it’s possible, but tells Touga that Akio is engaged. Utena gets annoyed again and reminds Touga that he was going to tell her about End of the World. Touga tells her that he can’t tell her who End of the World is, but that she’ll find out eventually. Then he asks her – “do you think it would be possible for me to be your prince?” and confesses his love for her. He tells Utena that many admire her and he may not be worthy of her, but wants to share this one moment with her. Touga kneels down in front of her and sweetly kisses her hand. Aww! He says – “if I can’t have you forever, I will forever cherish this moment of being with you tonight in my heart – a single moment is all I need.” Utena gives him his single moment and leans against him so he can put his arm around her.

Utena watches the sunrise from her room and thinks about Touga and the fact that he wants to be her prince. She looks over at the sleeping Anthy and remembers that she had once thought that Touga really was her prince, when she had first met him. Perhaps she faintly remembers him leaning over her coffin too. This might be why she was drawn to him in the first place.

Now this is interesting. Saionji meets with Touga and asks him if he’s found his answer. There is a small vase of white roses on the table – Utena’s color. When Touga tells him that he really does care for Utena, the roses are light blue – Miki’s color. But Touga says that he will duel her again and the roses are red – Touga’s color. A gunshot is heard and one red rose on the lower right is destroyed. Touga says that he must win and now the roses are dark blue – Ruka’s color. Another gunshot and the one on the lower left is destroyed. Touga says that it’s the only way he can save Utena. Now there are orange roses – Juri’s color - on the table and one on the top right is shot off. Touga continues and says “however if she wins the next duel…” – yellow roses now – Nanami’s color and the one on the top left is shot off.

Saionji finishes Touga’s sentence and says “she gains the power to bring the world revolution.” The rest of the roses are shot off, but when a close up is shown, a single white rose remains. Touga says “she’ll fall into End of the World’s hands.” There is one more gunshot, but the screen turns black. I think the shot roses might represent the earlier duelists being defeated or “shot down”. However, Miki’s color was not shot at and there were no green roses for Saionji. And since the single white rose was shot at, but wasn’t seen to be hit (since the screen went black), does it mean that Utena may be defeated or destroyed as well? Perhaps even die? Between the dialogue and the roses, this was a very ominous scene.

Utena and Anthy are sitting under a tree and Anthy asks Utena where she was the night before. Utena says nowhere are Chuchu digs up an earthworm. Yes, I looked up what an earthworm can mean – it’s usually associated with weakness and sneakiness or can represent a mean, contemptible person. Well, Utena was being a little sneaky in her answer to Anthy. And Chuchu does belong to Anthy – a mean, contemptible person? – I guess we’ll see.

Anyway, Touga and Saionji join the girls. As Saionji relaxes with Anthy, Touga has Utena backed up against the trunk of the tree. Holding her prisoner with his arms, Touga tells her that he wants to duel her again. He promises her that if she wins – “the student council will never try to take the Rose Bride again” but then he tells Utena that if he wins, Utena will belong to him forever. Utena seems hurt as she tells Touga that she thought he was better than that and I think those words hurt Touga as well – for all that he thinks he’s doing the right thing. However, Utena agrees to the duel.

As Utena and Anthy arrive at the arena in an explosion of pink petals, Touga and Saionji arrive with the car. Touga announces that “this battle will decide who will bring revolution to the world” and Utena says that she doesn’t care about that and reminds Touga of his promise to leave Anthy alone if she wins. The swords are drawn and the bells ring as the cars pop up and the duel begins. The fight is intense as the car circles the arena with Saionji as the only passenger. Utena reminds Touga of their night together, but Touga tells her that “personal feelings are forbidden in combat.” However, he grabs her hand and pulls her close to him, promising to protect her. And he had the perfect opportunity there to take her rose too!

The cars encircle them and turn their headlights on the duelists, and Anthy is ever in the background of this fight. As Touga and Utena part, the cars race around them and they must now also avoid getting hit. Anthy calls out to Utena and Utena goes to her, promising to always protect her. Once Anthy “blesses” Utena’s sword, Utena is able to slice the oncoming cars in half, protecting Anthy who is clinging to her back.

As the sliced cars fall off the edge of the arena, Saionji comes at her on the motorcycle, driving it from the sidecar, with Touga standing on the seat and both of their open shirts flapping in the breeze. Very amusing! Utena makes her final attack and the broken motorcycle also falls off the edge of the arena. The ringing bells announce the end of the duel and the winner is Utena!

Pink rose petals rain down on her and Anthy and Utena tells Anthy that they should go since Akio is waiting for them, but Touga calls out to Utena to wait. He gives her a warning against End of the World and the Rose Bride, telling Utena to never let her guard down. But all Utena says is “you just don’t give up” and leaves with Anthy, bidding Touga “farewell.” Saionji asks if it’s over, but Touga says that “it won’t be over for them until the very end.”

In their room, Utena tells Anthy that it’s great that no one will ever go after her again. Anthy agrees and there is an extremely long pause. Utena dozes off, saying Akio’s name as Anthy looks at her. Utena dreams of the witch and wakes up to find herself alone. She wonders where Anthy is and wanders into the observatory. Utena sees Anthy on the sofa with Akio, but when Anthy stands up, Utena sees that she’s naked. This Anthy looks very different. Then Anthy looks straight at Utena.

Episode 37 -

spoiler

Utena looks at the sleeping Anthy and remembers saying that she will become a prince and “save her”. Utena thinks of the prince telling her that if she never loses her nobility, the ring will lead her “back to this place to save her one day.” Utena removes the ring and lets it fall to the floor.

As Anthy watches Chuchu butter toast at breakfast, Akio notes that Utena doesn’t look good and asks if something is bothering her. Utena says that there is but she can’t talk about it and tells him “everyone has things they have to keep to themselves.”

Akio also notices that Utena is not wearing the ring. Utena asks Akio if they can get together after school and Anthy interrupts her by picking up Chuchu’s toast and saying “I just realized I accidentally took yours by mistake Chuchu.” It sounds like she is really saying something to Akio and Utena. Akio asks Utena if she’s asking him out on a date and when she says that she is, he tells her that he’ll wait by the car for her. It seems that Anthy is teasing them about the date too and mentions that most girls would kill to go on a date with Akio. Would Anthy? I wonder if she would kill Utena if she could.

Touga and Saionji are on a bicycle and say they both got farewell letters from End of the World. Utena probably got one too, albeit a very different letter. The vase of roses on the table now contains all of the dueling colors. Touga says that Utena doesn’t care and Saionji says that “the power of Dios will remain sealed and the revolution won’t happen.” Touga says that End of the World’s real goal is still a mystery. Saionji wonders if Utena realizes who End of the World is. Touga says that it’s been a long time sine he and Saionji rode a bike together and Saionji agrees.

Utena and Akio are back from their date and Utena thanks Akio for a fun time. Akio notes that she still isn’t wearing the ring and asks her why. Utena tells him that the ring isn’t really “her” anymore and Akio says that he’ll give her a ring to go with her new “look.” He pushes her back on the seat and Utena asks if he thinks Anthy is asleep yet. Akio later tells her that she seems very “girlish”. When Utena says that he hasn’t mentioned the stars, he says that the truth is that they really don’t interest him.

Anthy greets Utena when she returns and Utena is surprised to find her still awake. Utena asks if she’s mad. I wonder what she thinks Anthy might be mad about – taking Akio? Utena says that she felt Akio was teasing her about being girlish and Anthy says that Akio was probably just telling her that all girls are Rose Brides. Anthy covers Utena’s hand with her own and asks if she’s received a letter for End of the World. Anthy tells her that if she goes to the castle, Utena will meet her prince. Utena says that so much has happened to them since they met and tightens her hand on Anthy’s as well.

Touga and Saionji question Akio about the farewell letters as he photographs them during another interesting photo shoot. They ask Akio about his plans for Utena and tell him that she has no reason to go to the castle. Akio says that the choice will be hers.

Anthy tells Utena that her brother loves her and says that she likes their life together. Anthy hopes nothing changes about the way all three of them feel about each other. Utena shreds the letter from End of the World.

Miki and Juri come to tell Utena that they’ve received letters from End of the World saying that Utena has been chosen and ask what her plans are. As they talk, they play badminton (“indicates that you need to make a decision quickly or else opportunities will pass you by” – yup – looked it up!). Utena can’t believe that she has the power to change the world and tells them that she was only “playing prince”. Juri says that even so, no one could defeat her.

Juri confesses that she was only thinking of herself and Utena asks her about Shiori. Juri says that she can’t come to terms with her feeling and asks Utena about Anthy. Utena has trouble describing the differences in the feelings. Nanami shows up and asks Utena if she doesn’t know that she’s being tricked. Nanami has left the Student Council and warns Utena to keep away from Akio and Anthy.

It seems that Miki is also in love with Utena now, but Utena asks him about Anthy. And apparently Miki has changed his mind. His sister is watching him. Then Juri asks Utena for her picture for her new locket as Shiori looks on. Miki teases Juri that he now has a rival fir Utena and jokingly says that they’ll have to duel over her. They all laugh as Nanami calls them idiots.

Weird scene of Anthy and Akio in the car. Anthy is screaming in pain and Akio tells her that the world makes her suffer – not him. However, there is a flash of the needles that pierce the witch in Akio’s own body. I wonder what this means. Is he some kind of prisoner too? Does he suffer just as much?

Another strange scene when Utena asks Anthy about her future plans. Anthy only wants to take care of her roses, so Utena says that maybe she can be a florist. Anthy asks Utena about “cantarella” – a deadly poison and then asks Utena how she likes the cookies. Utena hesitates and tells Anthy she put poison in her tea. Anthy then hesitates and resumes drinking the tea, saying it’s delicious. Utena agrees that the cookies are too. The music here is a bit odd. It sounds like a record with a scratch that keeps jumping.

Anthy asks Utena where she sees herself in ten years. Utena has no idea, but expresses a wish that they will still be together drinking tea and Anthy says that she’s like that too. They make a promise that they will. But later Anthy tries to commit suicide by jumping off the roof. Utena accuses her of running away, but Anthy says that she can’t go on. She does jump, but Utena grabs her hand. Anthy begs her to let go as Utena reminds her of their promise to have tea and laughter together in ten years. Anthy asks Utena for forgiveness.

Utena is on her way to the arena and Touga and Saionji meet her. Touga says that he didn’t think she’d go and thinks that she must want to see her prince that badly. Utena says that it isn’t only that and Saionji questions her about Anthy. Touga says “Whoever is devoted to true friendship is a gullible fool” and Utena answers him with “Didn’t you know? I am a fool” and heads off to the arena.

Further along the way, she meets Anthy. Anthy says “The time has come. When you pass through the Rose Gate, the path to the castle will open. There you will gain the poser to bring the world revolution and there we will meet once more. Signed, your prince.” Anthy holds out the letter that she taped back together to Utena and tells her that there’s still time to turn back. In answer, Utena holds up her hand to show Anthy that she is wearing the ring again and says “let’s go.” The strong breeze takes the letter from Anthy’s hand and blows it towards the arena.

We couldn’t think of an ending so we will leave it ambiguous and let make your own! Sometimes, it really does work, other times, not so much.

I have to agree with you.

Considering how convoluted the story writing was, I wasn’t really surprised at the ambiguous ending. It seems like they did a lot a talking, but very little explaining. I think this could have gone on for another 10 episodes and we still wouldn’t have had a satisfactory conclusion. It was just too vague on the core plot points - like what was Akio really trying to do and what was up with the whole incest thing? Endings like this can work, but here it just fell flat.

i just finished up today and was very disappointed… boo!!
i was hoping for something more than what they gave…

i would like 19.5 hrs of my life back… lol
but at least its another one i can cross off my list

Wow, I’m extra glad I didn’t subject myself to this one now.

I, too, was confused and a little disappointed - BUT I wouldn’t have missed all those half-clothed men for ANYTHING!!! :woohoo:

Yes, this show did have it’s…er…moments.

you can go ahead and keep those men… lol

i did like the duel scenes… the music was alright too…
just a TON of symbolism and randomly unfinished dialog…
AHRG!!
and it was sooooo damn repetitive !!! using the same scenes over and over and over and over and over!!!(the entire black rose “arch”, the car driving, Naname whining about her brother, etc)
blah!!

but i guess im trying to broaden my “anime horizons” so its good for me to get out and see some of the other stuff that’s out there…
i just thought it would be a lil more “finished”
