But was it any good? The hype was thick enough to stop bullets for this show. I didn’t check out the Madman-leaked full episode so I’m still in the dark as I missed its Toonami premiere. I wonder if Funi has it up, or if FiOS will put it on demand on Sunday.
meh…it was pretty cool, visually at least; even if it felt they were just being weird for weirdness sakes but that just how I felt.
The dub was meh, kinda uneven at times: first episode jitters I suppose. I didn’t like the narrator, he sounded kinda bored; he should have sounded like Patrick Stewart in “Ted”: classy and elegant-like while the crazy animation did it’s thing.
That last scene: I hope Space Dandy isn’t the new Aeon Flux or Kenny. That’s all I’ll say.
I found the first episode bland and boring. Dub had a few high points ,but for the most it had a lot of low points. For the speed they had to do the dub I guess it was ok. I also expected better music . What I got in the first episode I was disappointed.
I will say the spaceship with the Statue of Liberty head with the ball gag made me laugh.
Well I saw that FiOS has it on-demand, and even in HD, but I didn’t get to see it yet. ssd face.
If they’d just stream the darned thing then this would be easy.
I had my doubts about Zach Bolton handling the speed dub when he’s been having trouble with normal dubs (he had 3 months to dub index and the subpar results speak for themselves) and you guys aren’t allaying my concerns here
One thing that really stuck out for me is that the show is trying too hard to be cool.
My Opinion:
The mystery about Dandy doesn’t interest me at all, as a main character and the hook to keep people watching he’s rather cliche and boring. There were some funny bits but nothing laugh out loud funny.
The subs gave me the impression that he was supposed to sound bored. This Junichi Suwabe guy isn’t half bad.
What is up with the sub casting for Honey? A cutsey, moeblob voice shouldn’t be coming from that character. ANN reports that both Honey and QT’s actresses have little anime acting experience. Weird.
Funimation’s streaming isn’t anywhere near good enough to do the visuals in this justice. This show is like Cowboy Bebop if that show had been made by GAINAX. I guess it was alright, though it kinda felt like “Super Milk Chan 2.0” IMO.
Now if only I could reliably watch the dub of this. Oh well.
Do these ratings take into account DVR time-shifted viewings? I guess by definition they don’t count my on-demand viewing as I’m not doing it at those times.
I wonder how the Space Dandy viewing numbers compared here vs Japan. I don’t believe that it would matter all that much but it would be kinda impressive IMO if US viewership on Cartoon Network beat out the viewership of the die-hard otaku in Japan.
I finally saw the dub of this one. It lacks verve, though it is far from the worst dub I’ve heard in a while. Giving the brutish spacefaring-simian pimp the voice that Tatum uses to voice effete, debonair and-dare I say it-dandy characters just doesn’t sound right.
The dub ain’t half bad but I’m still on the fence as to which language I prefer for this one.
Though I have to say it: If this is supposed to be a comedy, well, I haven’t laughed yet at/with it.
I guess that is good news. I don’t want the first modern “simuldub” to fail but I do wish it were actually a show that I liked. Maybe they’ll get on the ball in Season 2?
Guess who’s coming back? SPACE DANDY returns to Toonami for a second season with ALL NEW, WORLD PREMIERE episodes, starting Saturday July 5th at 12:30am! Be there, baby!
