Bubblegum Crisis / Bubblegum Crash! / Tokyo 2040

C’mon SonyAniFuniRoll, bluray of 2040 when?

Is it time yet for the 8K rescan of 2033 so that a UHD bluray can be rolled out? Or maybe going back and completing the original series (assuming anyone still does trad cel animation these days)?

Wouldn’t mind seeing another reboot being more in line with the original, and them sticking to the original plan of killing off Priss and replacing her with Vision at the midpoint

I really wish Funimation would lose some of the older shows like 2040 they have . So someone that would give a :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: could license them . The majority of the DVD’s and some of the Blu-ray’s look like straight up :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: .

I concur. It definitely is a loss to future fandom that Funi didn’t secure the ADV extras for their release as Greenfield and the guys really fleshed that one out with commentaries, and they offered insight into what it was like working with the Japanese in producing the show.

As I recall, they also explained the logic that the Japanese used to coin the phrase “Bubblegum Crisis”. I know I didn’t know how the phrase came to be until I heard it there.

On a slight tangent, I have a fair few Funi DVDs that are both letterbox and pillarboxed. Like Vandread, which is kind of a downgrade from the original Pioneer discs, video quality might by slightly better, but packaging, menus, and presentation are worse.

Rewatching some BGC 2040, I'd forgotten how 80s some of the BGM was. Also I hadn't seen this since "Boomer" became a meme, so of course that adds some additional humor

Though I wouldn’t mind a spinoff where the Boomers are more “just robots” and less "that DNA computer from Johnny Quest"

Still, a nice bluray steelbook of BGC 2040 would be swell, heck I’d grab a steel rerelease of the 2033 bluray too. Until then, I might have to dip a toe into 4K “AI” upscaling, though the early “digipaint” and especailly the BGC 2040 cel-based art look surprisingly good with only normal upscaling.

So I am watch 2040 and it is good so far. I probably should have bought the ADV version.

My biggest issue with Tokyo 2040 is the total emasculation of Sylia’s character from the OVA series. Priss, Nene and Linne are all relatively intact character wise,

Everything that was great about Sylvia in the OVA series was taken from her, Designer of the Hard Suits? Nope now that’s Nigel, The calm cool collected leader? No, now she’s a total PTSD case, without the training and obsession that makes Batman interesting.

Then the 3 biggest sins the show did:

Spoilers

Galatea was unnecessary as it should have been Sylvia herself that was the Boomer created to take care of her human brother Mackie. Mackie turning out to be the Boomer was just done for shock value, and then Sylvia being a non participant in the final battle aboard the space station was a slap in the face too.

Taken on it’s own, it’s pretty decent though, so there’s that

I don’t think the video is much different but I believe the ADV Essentials and Ultimate Collection releases had the 5.1 audio and a few extra’s like VA commentary and character bios.

Those extras are good to have after a rewatch. I just think more care went into the ADV release of a show.

Holy crap, it’s finally up for pre-order.

  • Bubblegum Crisis is now out of print for both Blu-ray and DVD editions. We’re out of the Blu-rays but still have some DVDs left. (Other retailers should still have some Blu-rays.) Once these are gone, these old editions will NOT be re-printed. That said, one shouldn’t ever underestimate the Knight Sabers…
