After a day since I watched the dub, I just watched it again and I thought Kyou voice was perfect. I must have been just used to the sub version.
I was just thinking ranomly for a second but⦠What if Tomoya was voiced by Mark Gatha? Better or worse? You tell me.
Ok so I tested out the dub, watched the first episode again. And itās off to a great start. Everyone is at the top of their game, and itās very well cast. So far my favorite is Kaytha Coker. I think she really stands out here. Brittney Karbowski is probably my other favorite here (hope she getās better soon
) . Sheās at the top of her game. David Matranga as the lead, is top notch. I was a little worried about Luci Christian being in this, since sheās a little overused. But she seemed fresh as ever, so Iām a-ok with her in this. If I had a complaint it would be that Shelley Calene-Black sounded a tiny bit older then she probably should. I canāt think of anything but Princess Nine where she has played a character this young though, so that may be why I feel this way. But also it does make sense for that character to sound a little older, because she seems to be a āmatureā character in a way. This is a very tiny problem however. Also Greg Ayres made me kinda like that blond hair kid. That in itās self is a real feat, because the original voice actor made me want to strangle him. I HATED that character before, now heās ok. Also the dub on the whole made this much more enjoyable for me. Pushed the show up a geat deal for me. I didnāt enjoy the first episode when I watched it subbed, but the dub is so lively, fresh, and it just grabbed me, that I really liked the show. Now I think I can watch this series and enjoy it. There is nothing else to complain about really with this dub. Itās made the series more enjoyable for me, so thatās the sign of good things to come. Will this dub be a continuation of the stellar ADV dubs we got up until their collapse? One can sure hope so! Itās far to early to tell, but it feels like they picked up right where they left off. We will see!!! This dub has potential. Iāll say this much, already I know this is better then the funi-factory
.
Also I think Steven Foster did a wonderful job of trying to keep it very much like Air and Kanon. Really it feels very much like those dubs, in the same style and spirit, at yet different enough to make sure the show has itās own identity. This can be a real winner of a dub, I must see more to really tell but itās off to a great start. Every time I heard a new voice, the smile on my face got bigger and bigger. This is like an ADV reunion. All the stars, and rising new people are here, and they are off to a great start.
Cody: I think your crazy
. Saying that the original track kinda made you critize this too hard. The dub is making me critize the original track too hard! I think so far the dub first episode > the sub first episode
.
I think after two more episodes Iām getting used to the dub, what bothered me about it at first Iām noticing less. But this is a really well done story, so itās easy to get sucked right into it.
Overall I like the Dub acting but there are still just a few issues for me with it. Tomoya while I like Matrangaās voice, he just feels older to me like that is the voice of a college kid. I was a bit off put by Nagisa at first but now I am feeling comfortable with her. My issue was more just so used to hearing her in other work that it was off putting at first. My only other issue is Sunohara. Sure I like Ayresās voice work in other series and while it is good here, that scratchy nerdy voice I think takes him farther away from the Japanese version, and even more so from the movie and manga as a more serious goof off/slacker. I am atm not sure how that voice is going to come out when Sunohara gets around to his story arc and has some serious moments involving his sister.
While the rest of the voices so far are good, my three favorites by far though are, Tomoyo, Ryou, and the best of all⦠Fuko!
Beyond a few issues with voices I have been enjoying the dub version of Clannad and is nice to watch it again. Though my fingers curl every time I hear Nagisaās name called out. Sure you can say GEE (and mispronounce it like a roob) but to me itās a huge blunder. A name, in the end is a name no matter the language and as such it should have been pronounced as the original Japanese version did so. There is no excuse for that.
I really enjoyed the Clannad dub so far. Itās definitely a thrill to watch familiar characters talk in such a familiar language. While I was a little taken back at the somewhat husky voice given to Kyou, Iām sure that Iāll eventually get used to it.
BTW, has everybody here seen this show in its entirety and are hardcore fans to begin with? Iām quite surprised that many posters are being very detailed with their reactions - some are even going into the realm of examining the pronunciations!
(I love the show and all, but Iām not somebody who has time to compare and contrast with what I saw in the Japanese.)
There is at least one excuse for it. There have been many times where the Japanese producer or directors requested a particular pronunciation of a word, or specifically had certain lines rewritten to their specifications. Iām not saying that was the case in this situation, but there are some horror stories out there about the Japanese getting too heavily involved in the production of the English dub.
No you say they should always pronounce it as it is done in the Japanese. Do you think this should extend to when the Japanese mispronounce English names? Or do you think they should correct that and use the proper English pronunciation?
This does have me curious as to how they will handle one of the names in Tears To Tiara. There was quite a debate on a few other sites because of how the Japanese pronounced āLucifer.ā They used a āhard Kā sound, āLuKiferā. Most just assumed it was mispronunciation, but others argued that some regions in Europe, including Celtic and Nordic regions, actually pronounced it in a similar manner. Considering the nature of that show, the pronunciation would fit. Iām just curious as to what they will use in the dub.
With the localization that is sometimes done, I often wonder why the Japanese names are not angloized. It is most like due to Anime fans liking the Japanese names; My wife tends to loose who is talking to who, because she does have difficulty in attaching the strange sounding names to the characters.
My wife is watching the dub with me. She would not sit for two seconds while it was subbed. The jury is still out if she will make me buy the dubbed Clannad. I already warned here about the next two episodes, she does not like supernatural stuff.
Watching it again, I can see from the opening that Clannad 2 must have been planned from the start. Seeing the imaages gives me shivers.
So according to the commercial that plays before episode 5, Clannad is coming to iTunes. That is AWESOME! It isnāt up just yet, but I canāt wait to be able to legally download it.
Itās also awesome to see some good old fashioned TAN commercials. Iām hoping that soon Sentai will get back to creating the occasional trailer. I really miss those.
Now that weāre halfway through the series, Iād just like to say that I think everything is going just great. All of the VAs are perfect for their characters. I know a lot of us had concerns if Luci Christian would be able to, um, dial it down a notch from her more memorable roles. I think she is really hitting it out of the park with Nagisa. Iāve become very comfortable with David Matrangaās Tomoya and Greg Ayerās Sunohara is a delight. Iāve even become very fond of Shelley Calene-Blackās Kyou-the more I hear her voice as I watch Kyou the more it just⦠fits. I mean, come on-sheās had her sights set on Tomoya since the year before!
I could go on and on, but I guess Iāll just end it by saying I am eagerly awaiting June 15th so I can hear that my copy of Clannad is on its way to me, followed by the announcement that Seraphim is wrapping up production on the dub of After Story!
I agree! I think Sentai was waiting for some feedback on the dub of Clannad and looking at prebookings for the complete set before making a decision on dubbing After Story. The feedback has been good, so I hope the sales are too. I really want After Story to be dubbed, even if just for consistency. ![]()
Iām really enjoying the dub version also. Now that Iām used to the voices, I really canāt imagine it any other way ā all the voices are just a perfect fit. I would love to see After Story get dubbed as well.

Itās up to Kotomiās story now and I just love her character. Her violin concert was just as bad the second time around. She should definitely stick to making pie! And Tomoyaās dream was just as hysterical. Also, seeing Kyou as a magical girl was just so out of character for her, you just had to laugh.
*
I really enjoyed how Fuko showed up when they were trying to get a present for Kotomi. She gets a star instead of the stuffed animal, but keeps it for herself and runs off! I like too how Tomoya finally remembers his past with Kotomi. I really wish even more that they had done an extra episode where he and Kotomi end up together ā they make such a cute couple!
This series is even better the second time around! The story is so well planned from beginning to end. At first, it was weird watching the Clannad(dub) and After Story(sub) at the same time. Switching back and forth was a little disconcerting. Once I stopped that, the dubs just seemed natural and perfect.
Kotomi as a little girl going through the empty house calling for her parents, promising to be a good girl, is up there emotionally with Maes Hughesā funeral in the first FMA series (Elecia asking why theyāre covering up daddy, etc.).
By the way, theyāre finishing or have finished the dub for AfterStory per news Iāve read.
Clannad Complete Collection now up for pre-order at Amazon.

Rebecca1/2 ā I have to agree with you again. These two episodes were very emotional. I think I enjoyed them more now than I did in the first viewing. Shadycat ā you are so right in saying itās better the second time around!

The story of Tomoya and Kotomi is pretty intense. I had forgotten that Kotomi played the violin as a child. I got all emotional too when little Kotomi ran through the house calling for her parents.
*
I really liked how Tomoya decided to fix up the yard for her as he remembered it. It was very sweet and very sad when Kotomi finally comes out of the house and takes his hand. They both cried and so did I.
*
And it hit me again when Kotomi gets the briefcase with the teddy bear and the note. Her parents thought more of her than their thesis which really touched Kotomi and I think she was finally able to forgive herself for being so angry with them when they left her. It must be an awful burden for a small child to remember the last thing you told your parents is that you hated them.

Iām glad she got the violin in time for her birthday. Iām glad too that she finally got her birthday party. It kind of makes up for the one she didnāt get in the past.
