Clannad and Clannad After Story

Also, considering Nagisa’s health, and the incident during her childhood, his protectiveness is understandable.

I just found this video on Youtube. Its a guy playing a guitar to the Dango song, I was impressed.

if you liked it watch this one.

I watched those videos and that guy is very talented. All those instruments! Thanks for finding him, chrisc, and sharing.

Episode 15 -

spoiler

I did not watch the preview of the next episode. This episode was too full of portent and I think it is pretty obvious what will happen next. All the evidence, since the first episode, seems to be coming together.

There was one funny moment when Tomoya calls Akio “grandpa” and he doesn’t like it. And a nice, but somehow sad moment when they all sing the Dango song together.

But the scene that clinched it for me was the one by the water. Tomoya and Nagisa choose a name for their baby and make a promise to take their child to the beach the following year. However, to me it seemed that Tomoya is really making Nagisa promise that she will survive the birth and it looked like that Nagisa understood that as well.

I think the next episode is going to require an entire box of tissues.

When my eyes get misty reading your synopsis, I think I may have to skip the tissues and go right for a towel!

Have a bad feeling this show is going to make me cry before its over.

You’re probably right! I know it made me tear up once or twice.

Hasn’t it already?

Got me misty eyed but feel its going to get worse.

Yeah it will. Though for me, it was actually after a certain event that I cried. It just caught me off guard and I was actually shocked and tried to figure out what happened.

Cody - Is this the event you are referring to?

Episode 16 -

spoiler

Once again, I did not watch the preview of the next episode. I didn’t want to believe it, but I knew what was going to happen in this episode. Everything pointed to it and more points to it in the beginning of this episode.

The episode begins with Tomoya already blaming himself. Nagisa has another birthday and gets another dango. When Nagisa can’t hold them, she tells Tomoya to and he says that they smell like her.

Their friends pay them a New Year’s visit and there is an odd conversation about theoretical physics. When they speak of different dimensions and hidden worlds, Tomoya gets a flash from the play they did about the girl in the world that ended. I have a feeling that Kotomi’s theories may play a part later in the story - especially since they showed scenes with the little robot that finally stops working.

There are more changes in town as it develops. Akio says that “everything has to change – that’s what has to happen for people to live” and Tomoya says that he is beginning to hate the town. I think it is very ironic that there is a hospital being built right there too. And Akio refers to a saying – “do what is humanly possible, and submit the rest to fate.”

There is a very heavy snow that pretty much shuts down the whole town. Nagisa gets sick again and runs a fever. She goes into premature labor and tells Tomoya “I’ll make sure Shio comes out safely – the three of us are going to live together.”

Since they can’t get her to the hospital, Sanae and Akio bring the midwife, Yagi to her. While she is in labor, Tomoya pleads with her to be ok, holding her hand the entire time. Nagisa keeps losing consciousness, but the pain of the contractions keep waking her up.

After a very long time, Tomoya starts to lose hope, but then hears the baby cry. He takes daughter in his arms and turns to Nagisa. He doesn’t get a response from her and grabs her hand in panic. A very weak Nagisa says that she was happy to give birth at home and that Tomoya was the first one to hold the baby. She says that she is tired and wants to rest. (I was instantly reminded of the earlier scene when Nagisa could not hold the dangos and had Tomoya hold them - here she is too weak to hold her baby and Tomoya is holding it.)

While this is happening, there is talk in the background of the whereabouts of the Dr. and still not being able to use the car. Tomoya begins to talk of the baby and the baby’s future with tears in his eyes and the dango theme playing in the background. While Tomoya talks, Nagisa slips into death. Still holding the baby, Tomoya falls over her in grief.

He thinks of their life together and how Nagisa promised that they’d always be together. He had always thought that nothing good ever happened to him and he finally found something to live for in Nagisa. Tomoya has some flashbacks of their life together and comes to the conclusion that they never should have met. If they had gone their separate ways, Nagisa would still be alive and he would never have to go through such sadness.

I think, for all its sadness, this was a great episode. The story was told well and the death was handled in a believable way. However, with the earlier talk of parallel worlds, I want to think that Nagisa is alive and well in an alternate universe. I want to believe that she is surrounded by her happy family and holding her daughter in her arms.

They killed Nagisa! :frowning:

She was my favorite character because I also had problems with school due to my health. This one brought tears to my eyes.[need a crying emoticon]

I hope the talk of alternate dimensions is some clue to a solution.

And I hope the same thing about alternate dimensions! Why else would they mention them?

Being a few episodes ahead of everyone else means I cannot comment too much.

But my reaction to that last episode was a with a bit of surprise. I didn’t get to teary eyed, but I didn’t think he was going to handle it very well. I won’t say if he did or not.

I was actually more shocked by this episode than anything. It was a feeling of “Did that really just happen?” It took another episode before it actually sunk in.

My suggestion? Get a new box out and open it for ep. 16. And get another one ready for next week, too, I can just tell you’ll need it. And watch either Snow Fairy Sugar or You’re Under Arrest afterwards - everything else I tried expecting it to be funny was a lot more serious than usual this week…

As I discussed with Wicca, I think part of the reason that episode 16 caught me off guard was because of the “deceptive” art work Sentai chose for the DVD release. Of course, after seeing the end of the show, I guess it all makes sense.

Ep. 16

I almost cried too.

If think about this almost starts the series all over again, since it was harem series. Now he has 3 girls to pick from (5 if the other 2 show up). I hope he does not stay a single dad.

This is the first thing I watched. Followed it with a few lighter anime.
Ep. 16 is what makes the After story better than the original.

It does not help that I am also watching Shakugan No Shana.

Sorry, Longtime, but you’ll be sorely disappointed if you think that’s the way CAS is going.

I did not find myself crying, or even getting misty-eyed at ep. 16, but I did get that way for ep 17, as well as so happy to see the transition from the story to the end credits this episode. I’ve come to realize that it’s because I have been on a real life emotional “Space Mountain” of a roller coaster ride over health issues with my wife (and dealing with our new insurance company) and just did not have any emotions left over for ep. 16.

Episode 17

spoiler

I’m not good at synopses, so I’ll just note down some of my thoughts. I can understand where Tomoya was for those five years-I didn’t lose a wife by death, but the beginning of the breakup of my marriage was extremely painful for me and I found myself drawing away from my kids. Thankfully, it was less than five years until I got back involved with their lives, but the emotions were still the same.

I can see where this is leading, too… Tomoya is going to follow the only path he knows-his father’s. Will he be able to recognize this and stop before it’s too late? For both their sakes, I hope so.

Oh, ans as for Ushio? She just so darn CUTE!!!

One thing I’ve been wondering, though. Can anyone here name all the characters who are walking in the ending? I think I could maybe do half, if that.

Episode 17

spoiler

I think in a way Nagisa’s parents finally got a chance to make up for their failings with their daughter. By taking care of their grand daughter it might have helped them atone for their occasional neglect of Nagisa, that ultimately left to her sickness and death.

While I could certainly understand Tomoya’s feelings, part of me was really pissed off at him. He worked so hard to grow up and provide for Nagisa, but he completely shut down without her, and ultimately failed his daughter. It was a bit aggravating. I can’t help but think that Nagisa looking down on him and feeling a bit disappointed.
