Clannad and Clannad After Story

Someone can start a new drinking game with this. Every time you pull out a hanky, drink.

There’s an idea Tonka!

And I agree with you, Rebecca1/2 about episode 11 -

spoiler

Nagisa is acting like Tomoya’s wife and is becoming his anchor, while he has to deal with a hectic work schedule. However, due to their different schedules, they still don’t get to see much of each other. Kind of sad, especially when Nagisa asks him if he is lonely (as she so obviously is).

I like when Tomoya spends some time with Nagisa’s dad. He takes Tomoya out for some “adult” fun and they end up at a toy store fighting with light sabers!! Nagisa’s wants to put a lizard down his wife’s back. He tells Tomoya that “thrills like this are the secret to keeping married life fresh”. But he makes Tomoya do it and when she freaks out and runs away, I love the dad’s line then – “this is turning out to be more than a little thrill”. He goes after his wife and blames Tomoya and Tomoya finds out that they have been entertaining the whole neighborhood.

When Tomoya and Nagisa plan on going to the Founder’s Festival together, there is a cute scene of Nagisa cooking for Tomoya and singing about the Founder’s Festival to the tune of the Dango song. Then he tells her he will be working weekends and may have to cancel their date, but she seems to take the news pretty well.

He has also been hiding his shoulder injury from the people at work, but Yoshino notices anyway and promises to help him, causing Tomoya to cry in gratitude. But Tomoya is a good worker and is made permanent by the end of the episode. I was really happy for him!! But I hope things work out for him and Nagisa as well.

Damn Clannad and it’s ability to suck me in! It usually takes me two episodes or so to get into the show, but once I start I can’t stop. I just planned on watching Disc 1 yesterday, and watched the entire first set…LOL

So far, I am enjoying this a bit more than Clannad. It certainly did have it’s moments where it made me tear up a bit, unlike the first one. I’m also enjoying the fairly realistic portrayal of Tomoya’s life after high school.

Also, the story line about Misae and her cat was very sweet. I really enjoyed that one, and it reminded me quite a bit of Kanon. Also, I love Akiko’s jam from Kanon made a cameo in the show! It was hilarious. How often does that happen? :stuck_out_tongue:

After Story episode 12 -

spoiler

Yoshino talks about his past. It was pretty intense. But Yoshino shared with Tomoya for a reason – he doesn’t want him to lose sight of what’s important, like he did. Good advice!

When Tomoya is offered a supervisor’s position at another company, he is surprised and pleased. But when his father is arrested, they withdraw the offer and Tomoya rages. He wants to leave town and start over someplace else, but Nagisa tells him that would be running away and Tomoya even lashes out at her. Wow – that surprised me.

Tomoya’s anger only increases when they visit his father in jail and Nagisa fights to calm him down. He finally does and ends up proposing to Nagsisa, but he seems surprised when she accepts. He questions her and she explains that they can be stronger together – always a nice thought.

But when Tomoya asks if she will stay by his side forever and she tells him “no matter what – forever”, it has such an air of foreboding about it. This has got to be one of the worst and also one of the best marriage proposals ever!

I know that most people would judge Nagisa by her looks and dismiss her as a cute but somewhat childish person (the Dango obsession doesn’t help on that score), but I see such depth of character, strength of will and wisdom that exists in her. It’s probably due to all she’s had to overcome in her life, such as her illnesses. That’s why she was my first choice in the Claim Your Bishoujo/Bishounen thread.

I have to agree with you there. I know a lot of people hate her, because she’s pretty much “Moe” embodied. But I think they are missing a lot in her character. She may be submissive at times, but she is also very determined and never gives up. You have to admire those traits.

Also, after marathoning 12 episodes of this, the OP has really grown on me. I wasn’t sure about it at first, but I love it now!

The last couple of episodes I don’t know how anyone with a heart could not like her.

Yes, Nagisa may look like a cute child, but she has the heart of a very strong woman. Not only does she stand by Tomoya and support him, she is also a fighter and tries to keep Tomoya on the right path.

Like the way she keeps pushing Tomoya to contact his father, and the way she won’t let him run away from his problems.

She definitely knows what she wants and has become Tomoya’s anchor. She turned his life around; his life would have been completely different without her. I think she is a great character!

Also a fan of Nagisa as she is someone who cares deeply for her friends. Also missed a lot of school due to health problems so I can empathize with her.

yay! they finally married. Also, Nagisa finally graduated. Tomoya getting all their old friends together so Nagisa could have her own graduation ceremony = big AWWWWWW moment… just when you think you might get all the way through without a hanky, at the end you just might need the entire box.

I was going to post a comment about the anti-climatic way Nagisa and Tomoya’s marriage was handled in Episode 13 but I thought I should do a little research on marriage in Japan. I was surprised to find that all that is required for a Japanese couple to marry is to register their marriage at the town hall. I may start a thread on this in the Japan Culture section later.

It’s funny, but I was a bit saddened that Nagisa and Tomoya didn’t seem to have a ceremony to initiate their life together as husband and wife, or that they shared that with their friends. More was made of Nagisa’a graduation (which I was thoroughly touched by-I’m getting teary-eyed just writing about it!) then of their creating a new family. Maybe I’m just a sentimental old otaku grandpa…

spoiler

While it is true that is the way that marriage works in Japan, I too was a little disappointed that they didn’t make more of it - especially after the graduation ceremony as you said. I wasn’t expecting a huge ceremony - the show isn’t like that - but I thought they would do something with family and friends at least.

Episode 13 -

spoiler

I thought it was funny that Nagisa’s father wouldn’t have a serious conversation without a “baseball duel”. I’m glad Tomoya finally hit the ball and was able to ask for Nagisa’s hand, even if he was covered in mud!

Cute! Nagisa got another stuffed dango for Christmas. I also liked the scene of Nagisa’s first drink and her getting drunk and asking Tomoya about the feelings he has for her mother. So funny when her mother wants to know too and then her father getting mad.

And poor Nagisa got sick again and missed her graduation. It was so sweet of Tomoya to arrange a special one just for her with all of their friends. Even Tomoya put his school uniform on again - very touching! I liked Nagisa’s speech and the fact that she said that she wants to “live strongly”.

They visit Tomoya’s father in jail to tell him that they are getting married. I know Nagisa was behind that. I have a feeling that Tomoya wouldn’t have gone anywhere where near his father after that last visit.

And then they are married just like that! A little disappointing, but I’m so happy that they are finally married!

LadyOfWicca, what did you think of the preview?

Tomoya looked as nervous as… well, you get the idea!

I’ve finished up the series itself. Now I just have to finish the side stories at the end of the DVD. I have to warn you guys, the next few episodes, you may need some kleenex…lol One of the most dramatic things in the series actually didn’t upset me until after the fact. It was such a surprise and so shocking, that I hadn’t fully realized what had happened right away.

WARNING: HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD! IT’S PROBABLY BEST TO SKIP OVER THEM RIGHT NOW, UNLESS YOU’VE FINISHED THE SERIES!

spoiler

I really did not expect them to have Nagisa die in child birth. Also, the way it was handled was quite realistic, and it really took me a bit into the next episode to process it. You know how these Key shows handle these events, and I kept wondering if she was really dead or not, or perhaps just in a coma or something like that. I kept thinking “Uguu” girl in Kanon was dead, when she was in fact comatose, so it wouldn’t have surprised me if they had done the same thing here. It was actually an episode or two before they confirmed that she had in fact passed away.

I did find myself greatly disappointed in Tomoya for abandoning his daughter for 5 years, and leaving her in the care of Akito and Sanae. But in an odd way, it gave them a chance to redeem themselves for ultimately failing Nagisa at that age. In their own way, they were able to make up for their failures when she was that age.

Ultimately, Tomoya does finally take his daughter, and through those events, even reconciles with his father. But like always, his period of happiness doesn’t last long, as his daughter becomes gravely ill just shortly after moving in with him.

I had to take a break during the final half of this series, because I just couldn’t handle all the drama that was being piled on. To put it a way some of my writer, it was often “lumpy”. But I really enjoyed the series, despite the “cop out” ending. Considering the show, I’m willing to give it some slack on that one :stuck_out_tongue: This has been a very rewarding watch, and I can’t wait to watch the sides stories!

Yes,

he does look like a very nervous bridegroom! Should be an entertaining episode!

Episode 14 -

spoiler

Great episode! There might be a wedding after all, but maybe not. It will happen when Tomoya can afford it, which may be never at the rate they’re going! That whole “dad” and “son” scene was hysterical too.

It seemed like a very awkward wedding night. Tomoya was full of jitters and I thought he was going to jump out of his skin at one point. The look on his face was priceless when Nagisa said she’d like a baby. But some of the things they said - again, I get a sense of foreboding.

And MC Akio the Rapper!! Too funny!! I really can’t believe that Nagisa didn’t recognize her own father. But Tomoya’s blush was cute when he saw her in her waitress uniform. And the way Akio later ran away when he thought they were in trouble was funny too.

Tomoya seems very upset by change in this episode. But when life moves forward, it includes change. I wonder why this bothers him so much. He seemed really angry that the building with the Drama Club room is being torn down. Is he really so worried about his memories?

But I have to say that the best line in this episode was when a pregnant (that was fast!) Nagisa blurts out “we have sex”. Not only did I think Tomoya was going to die on the spot, but I thought Akio was going to murder him!

I can’t expand much on that, but I can say it was nice to have several laugh-out-loud moments in this one, as opposed to needing the kleenex even for the happy moments.

I have been watching this series with the online player, and runs a bit ahead of VoD. I want to drop so many spoilers, but I must resist! I am just waiting for the next set of commits now.

Well, all I can say after this week’s episode is Akio is certifiable! The funny thing is, I can understand him so well. Of course, I have three daughters, so my focus is spread around, whereas his is centered on his only daughter.

Don’t you dare, lest you end up like your namesake!

BTW, when I worked at Adelphia cable many years ago, we called the company-issued shirts “expendable crewman red”.
