Tomonori Inoue’s story of 3 genetically enhanced girls to premiere on October 2

Japanese television channel BS11 aired a commercial for the anime adaptation of Tomonori Inoue’s Coppelion science-fiction military action manga on Wednesday.

The narrator outlines the story set in 2036, after radioactive contamination from a nuclear accident has put Tokyo under a blockade. Three high school girls have been sent to this dead city. Thanks to genetic engineering, the three girls have been impervious to radioactivity since birth. They form a special forces unit, codenamed “Coppelion,” in the 3rd Division of Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force.

The anime will premiere in Japan on October 2 on the AT-X channel, although it will not debut on BS11 until October 4.

Shingo Suzuki (K, Mardock Scramble films) is directing the series and handling the character designs. Makoto Nakamura (Princess Lover!, Cuticle Detective Inaba) is in charge of series composition and Hiroshi Okubo (K, Mardock Scramble films) is handling mechanical designs. The animation is being produced at studio GoHands (K, Mardock Scramble films) with series directors Susumu Kudo and Hiromitsu Kanazawa. Mikio Endo is scoring the soundtrack, and Hiroshi Okubo is handling the mechanical designs. The series stars Haruka Tomatsu, Kana Hanazawa, and Satomi Akesaka.

The manga began in Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine in 2008 and moved to Monthly Young Magazine last year. Weekly Young Magazine announced a Coppelion television anime in 2010, but the plans were put on hold after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster.

With Madman announcing this license for AU/NZ yesterday, and Animax Asia posting an English-narrated trailer of this the other day, I’m pretty sure the licese for this has been picked up for a US simulcast (and probably release).
I’m just not entirely sure by who as of yet.
It is a Starchild series though, so I’m kind of leaning towards a CR/Sentai license at this point.

Perhaps we’ll find out tommorrow and/or Saturday at Sentai’s AWA panels.

“Scifi” piqued my interest, especially since it didn’t immediately go on to discuss moe versions of submarines and other weapons of war.

Then I got to the part about the character designer & director not only being the same person but being involved in K & Mardock Scramble, and then my interest died. It doesn’t sound as though this show has a great pedigree.

The premise is missing something: the reason why Japan deemed it necessary to genetically engineer 3 radiation-proof girls in order to send them into a nuked ghost town to create a special task force.

Tomonori Inoue’s story of 3 genetically enhanced girls to premiere on October 2

Viz Media began streaming a trailer on Monday to announce that it will simulcast Coppelion, the television anime adaptation of Tomonori Inoue’s science-fiction military action manga. Viz will stream the series starting on October 2 on its VizAnime.com website and Hulu.

The story is set in 2036, after radioactive contamination from a nuclear accident has put Tokyo under a blockade. Three high school girls have been sent to this dead city. Thanks to genetic engineering, the three girls have been impervious to radioactivity since birth. They form a special forces unit, codenamed “Coppelion,” in the 3rd Division of Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force.

The anime will premiere in Japan on October 2 on the AT-X channel.

Angela is performing both the opening and ending theme songs.

So Coppelion dies after a single season after all? Kinda surprising to me. I guess Viz hitched its hopes to a falling star, not that they had much choice. Fingers crossed for a dub that redeems 'em; why isn’t NGP hired more often to do CA anime dubs?

#11

Actually you have to think about Viz’s relationship with Studio GoHands. Gohands is working on the K movie right now or at least they are in post production on it. These days you won’t get subsequent seasons right after another anyway, you’ll usually have to wait 3-6 months for a sequel announcement, and you’ll have to wait for the BD/DVD sales in Japan, if those surpass a certain number, then you might get a sequel. Look at Freezing and Maken-Ki, they both had to wait almost 2 years for their sequels to be done.

Sci-fi action series to premiere on Neon Alley and Hulu on Thursday

So they went through with dubbing this show after all. I don’t recall good things being said about this show in the fandom.

The inclusion of Cherami & Spencer in this dub will serve to illustrate that the directors out there are the source of the woes in CA dubs. ANN lists Erica Lindbeck as only having one role and this is it. Dunno about that, especially if this is revealed to be a Studiopolis dub.

Interesting that they’re putting it on streaming so soon.

So the entire dub of this series will be released on Hulu on Thanksgiving? Checking the Viz release schedule (which is a PDF) seems to confirm this.

On a side note, I really wish that ANN would always link to its root sources in its articles, instead of linking to its own articles (no one like a self-quoter lol) as there’s no link on their page to the actual Viz announcement.
