We heard from Crunchymation’s physical media division this week. They have decided to do what I predicted a year ago and finally move their physical media master distribution to SPHE (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) over the course of March and April. This is why their Q1 new release schedule is currently so thin as they didn’t want a lot of release overhead during the transition. I think the last title we will get from them under their legacy Funimation distribution regime will be Suzume and The Legendary Hero Is Dead. They seem to have the schedule for the transfer setup pretty tight though, but having been through this sorta thing many times over the years, I would expect there will be some short term supply chain interruptions for some Crunchymation releases during the months of March and April. We’re going to pre-order a LOT of Suzume to make sure we have enough in the warehouse to keep it available for you thru the down time.
On the business end, aside from putting in place the final piece of their vertical Anime monopoly from localization to production to streaming to physical distribution to e-tail under Sony’s North American flagship, this move will serve to tighten up their control over their downstream distribution, marketing and dealer network. And, it will give them more power to build a wider moat around their ‘newly acquired’ e-tailer division.

I really hope this means in Q2 they finally release some of their massive back catalogue from the past few years…
And maybe Aniplex releases Ayakashi Triangle…

Something that worries me a little about that if this is to use Sony’s power to get stuff in to retail stores like Walmart we may see less stuff that does not appeal to the masses.

Well if you check out what they’ve released before the switchover and post Funimation, It’s been almost all the super popular stuff, the only somewhat fringe title was Bookworm S3 but it’s still moderately popular enough (Thanks to Sentai’s Stellar release of the S1 & 2 combo pack)
Still kind of surprised they didn’t get either Sentai or Discotek to release some of the more fringe stuff during the switchover, though.

Personally, I watched it cause it was Trigun, they got JYB back as Vash, and the fact Yami is actually in it as well!
The animation though…
I suppose for Japanese CG animation, it was okay…

When looking up an anime that was brought up in another thread (Mainly to refresh my memory of what it was), I happened to land on Crunchyroll, and it seems they FINALLY got around to merging Funimation data.
It seems if they find you have accounts at both places (assuming the same email address on both accounts), they’ll ask if you want to merge the data, replace your CR data with Funimation, or just ignore your Funimation data. I did a merge to get my watch history ported over. Will be interesting to see if I had something on my watchlist that I forgot about.
