Episode 9 –

spoiler

Richter looks out over a lake by the light of the full moon, and tells Cordelia to awaken. The sleeping Yui suddenly wakes up with that pain in her chest again. The pain is really bad this time, and Yui can’t figure out why she even gets these pains. It drives her outside for a walk and she ends up at a tomb, where she’s attacked by a couple of bats. Yui cries out and a voice tells her to be quiet. Entering the mausoleum, the moonlight reveals Shu to Yui. She apologizes for disturbing him and tries to ask him about her condition. She tells him that she hears the voice of a woman that isn’t there, and about her chest pains, saying that she just doesn’t feel like herself.

Shu tells her to come to him, but then he grabs her, and pushes her down on the stone bench, as Yui protests. He caresses her hair and brushes it aside to reveal her neck. He puts a thumb to her pulse, and strokes it before biting into her. His eyes widen in surprise as Shu says that her blood has changed. He tells her that “the awakening is at hand”. That only confuses Yui as Shu touches her blood and licks it from his fingers. He says it’s “hot and bursting out”. That seems to please him and he feeds from her again.

Yui tries to push Shu back and he grabs her hand, saying that he doesn’t have to feed from her neck as he presses his lips to her wrist. Yui tries to pull her hand back when he says that her blood smells good. Telling her not to move, Shu bites into her wrist, and continues his feeding. He says that her blood is of the finest quality and asks her if she’s scared. He enjoys the look of fear in her eyes and, taking her in his arms, bites her in the shoulder to feed once again. He really can’t get enough of her!

Shu tells Yui that her blood is delicious and Yui protests again. He tells her that women are terrifying and that he’s all worked up. He tries to bite her again and Yui manages to ask about this “awakening”, making him hesitate. She demands an answer and Shu tells her that “no sacrificial bride has ever survived to the point of awakening”. Yui begins to put the clues together, and asks Shu for the real reason she’s there. He tells her that “he” will answer her questions and tells the person to come in. Richter steps forward and Shu introduces him as his uncle.

Yui recognizes Richter as the man from her vision, the one sitting with Cordelia and holding her hand. Shu leaves Yui alone with Richter. He asks Yui for her questions and they just pour out. Richter chuckles and tells her that she is there because she is “of a suitable bridal age” and that she was “the easiest mortal to obtain”. She’s very relieved to know that her father wasn’t involved after all, but I wonder if she and Richter are talking about the same father. Yui is suddenly struck with another chest pain, and falls to her knees. Richter just watches, but he says that he will finally get to see his darling once again. Richter has been waiting for this moment and spreading his arms wide, tells Yui to come to him.

The wind suddenly blows and Yui wonders what’s happening. She looks up at Richter and gets another chest pain. Richter comes to her and get down on one knee. Looking her in the eye, he tells her that they should go - “to her” – and holds out his hand. He has taken Yui back to that locked room where she had found the diary. The diary and her picture now lie on a table in the room. Richter picks them up and says that there is no longer a need for them, and they turn to dust. Yui has no reaction to this loss and seems to be in some kind of trance. Richter indicates that Yui should move, and she walks to the bookcase and faces it.

The bookcase slides back and Yui enters the hidden room. The lights come on and reveal that torn, bloodied dress on a dais that looks like an altar. Richter tells Yui not to hesitate and tells her that the dress belongs to her. Yui touches the bloodied white rose on the shoulder of the dress, and fresh blood gushes from it, covering the rose and pouring down her arm. Yui receives a vision of Cordelia trying to grab at her and gasps. There is no blood gushing from the rose now and Yui’s hand is clean as well. Yui turns to Richter and, in a completely different voice, says that they finally meet again.

Richter is pleased. He bows to her and calls her his “beloved Cordelia”. When she looks at her hand, there is blood on her palm, and she suddenly begins to laugh. Outside, the full moon turns red. Inside the house, all of the boys sense something different in the air. Ayato wakes with a start and runs to Yui’s room, but it’s empty. He picks up her necklace from the bed and makes a fist around it.

Wow! A lot of questions were answered, but I still have more. For now, I will have to believe that Yui is somehow the reincarnation of Cordelia. Considering the way she died, will she now seek revenge against the sons that killed her? And to think that those three in particular have been feeding on their own mother all this time! No wonder they were so attracted to her blood!

spoiler

Cordelia and Richter enjoy their reunion, but they are interrupted by Ayato, demanding to know what is going on. Cordelia leaves it to Richter to explain, since she needs rest. Apparently, Yui is trying to eject Cordelia from her body.

After Raito pushed Cordelia off the balcony and she landed in the roses, Richter found her. She tells Richter to cut out her heart and put it into another body. He does as she requests, taking her heart and her dress, and swearing to resurrect her. He closes Cordelia’s eyes, and Richter bids a temporary farewell to his love.

Ayato verifies that Cordelia’s heart is in Yui’s body, and Richter tells him that Yui hardly exists anymore. Once Cordelia fully awakens, Yui will be gone forever. Ayato doesn’t like any of this, and turns away in disgust. Cordelia is enjoying the lake in the moonlight as Ayato approaches her. She asks him if he will kill her again. In answer, Ayato pushes Cordelia off the dock. Cordelia can swim, but Yui can’t, and it’s Yui’s body that wins here as Cordelia sinks.

Ayato turns to walk away, but Yui’s voice stops him. She managed to get herself back to the dock and Ayato helps her. Yui wants to know why she was in the lake and why she’s wearing a strange dress. Instead of giving Yui answers, Ayato feeds on her. Enthralled by her blood, Ayato tells her that she is the only one that can satisfy him, and that she belongs to him. Yui begs him to stop, and he tells her to devote her blood as well as her life to him.

Ayato leans down to feed on Yui again, but Raito and Kanato arrive. They want Yui’s blood too. Yui rises and runs into the woods. Ayato stands in front of the path she took and Raito tells him not to be greedy. Yui runs back to the house and into her room. She takes the silver knife from the drawer, but Subaru grabs her from behind, telling her to “stop smelling like that”, and bites into the back of her shoulder. Finding her blood irresistible, he demands more.

Yui drops the knife and collapses against the bed. Subaru picks up the knife and asks Yui if she’s afraid of them now. She begins to cry and says that she isn’t. Subaru places the knife on the bed and leaves her, telling her to keep it. Richter appears next, and tells her that her blood drives the boys to madness and makes them lose control. He warns Yui that each boy will want her as his own, and that it will lead to conflicts and death. This shocks Yui, but Richter grabs her chin, wanting her to admit that she had always known this would happen.

Yui asks him what she should do, and Richter tells her that the answer will come to her, but she will need to accept it when it does. He tells Yui it’s her destiny and the window blows open to reveal the red, full moon. Yui stares at it and sees Cordelia on the balcony. Cordelia reaches out her hand and Yui moves forward. She takes Cordelia’s hand, Cordelia disappears, and Yui falls to her knees. Richter comes up behind her and tells her that the complete awakening is at hand. Yui looks as if she’s praying, but Richter calls Cordelia’s name, and when Yui opens her eyes, they’ve changed color! I wonder who will win in this tug of war. I also wonder if anyone will survive.

Episode 11 –

spoiler

Cordelia has fully taken over Yui now and is back to her old self. She taunts Reiji about his mother, and hits a nerve. But Reiji also sees right through Cordelia and knows exactly what she’s doing. She even tries to seduce Reiji right in front of Richter, but he rejects her and insults her. Cordelia slaps him across the face

Raito interrupts them and tells Cordelia that he had hoped to see her in Hell. Kanato doesn’t understand how his mother can be back. Subaru says that Cordelia and Richter don’t belong there, that that they should “get lost”. Richter brings up Subaru’s mother and Subaru attacks him. However, Richter gets the better of him and tells all the boys that they can’t defeat him

Shu tells Richter that he can’t even come close to Karl Heinz, the head of the family, and Richter’s brother. Cordelia steps in to say that she isn’t being entertained by all this, and thought they could do better. She says that they are preventing her from being her “vibrant self” and gives Richter Subaru’s knife, telling him to kill all of the boys. Cordelia delights in their imminent deaths and tells Richter that she will make him head of the family. Richter asks her if she will swear to that and she says yes.

Richter finds that strange, since they already had that agreement when he saved her as she lay dying in the rose bed. She swore it then as well. Cordelia tries to placate him and urges him again to kill the boys. Richter turns on Cordelia! He tells her that she is foolish and is useless to him in her current condition. He only needs her heart, and can become the head of the family without her. Cordelia just stands there in shock. Did she really think that she had Richter’s loyalty in this family that turns upon one another at the drop of a hat?

Cordelia realizes that this was Richter’s plan all along. He admits that he is using her rather than her using him. He grabs Cordelia and drags her into his arms. Just as Richter is about to bite into her neck, Ayato interrupts and says that she belongs to him. Still holding on to Cordelia, Richter picks up a sword and points it at Ayato, telling him not to interfere. He slashes at Ayato, but Ayato jumps back and only his tie is cut

Raito tosses Ayato a sword and he and Richter begin to fight. Even with holding Cordelia, Richter is stronger and soon has Ayato against a wall. He stabs him in the shoulder, and Ayato falls to his knees. Richter prepares to deal the killing blow, but Yui wakes up! Richter is surprised and Yui is able to break free from him. Yui picks up Subaru’s knife and prepares to stab herself with it, saying that no one else will get hurt now. Yui thrusts the knife into her heart and falls back, but Ayato catches her before she hits the floor.

It looks like Richter is going to cut out Cordelia’s heart again with his sword, but Ayato is faster and stabs him instead. He falls, unconscious; however, I very much doubt that he is dead. Richter is a vampire after all and the sword was just an ordinary one. Ayato commands Yui to open her eyes. She finally does, but it’s Cordelia’s eyes and not Yui’s. Cordelia chuckles and calls Yui a foolish girl. She tells Ayato that it’s only a matter of time before Yui dies and she completely awakens. Cordelia says that Yui’s body and soul will soon be all hers. She then falls unconscious.

Episode 12 –

spoiler

Interesting that Shu calls Yui “bait”. Subaru pulls the knife from Yui’s chest. Richter is in the underground passageway, saying that he can’t die yet. He makes his way to a spiral staircase. Yui has been placed on the sofa and the brothers are gathered around her. They are trying to think of a way to prevent Cordelia from returning. Do they really care that much for Yui?

Richter has made it back to the room where Cordelia’s bloodied dress is on display. He reaches for the rose, but a voice stops him. Raito is behind him. Most of the brothers are still with Yui when she makes a noise. Ayato tells her to wake up. But Shu says it might be the awakening. No mortal has ever survived the process before, but Yui has Cordelia’s heart.

Raito is still with Richter and tells him that the dress is dangerous. Richter says that the truth isn’t as simple as Raito thinks. Yui is probably going to die, but the brothers don’t want her to. Reiji has something to kill off Cordelia, but it isn’t finished. He needs a piece of Cordelia. Kanato pulls the head off of his teddy bear and takes out a vial. He hands it to Reiji, saying that he doesn’t need it anymore. Whatever it was, it looks like it completes his potion.

Raito is still talking to his uncle. Richter says that they have an “inescapable destiny” and falls to his knees. I still don’t understand how he can be dying. He’s a vampire for crying out loud! Well, it may not be an issue anymore as Raito holds up a lantern and tosses to the floor next to Richter. The blood ignites and both Richter and the dress go up in a green blaze. It was a little satisfying to see that bleeding rose on the dress melt. Richter just smiles. Raito smiles too. He bids Richter farewell, telling him to enjoy Hell, and leaves the secret room, closing it up behind him.

Ayato feeds Reiji’s potion to Yui with a kiss. He softly calls her name and she opens her eyes. It’s Yui and she can’t believe that she’s still alive. She wants to know why, but Ayato tells her that she doesn’t need to know. Yui looks around and sees that all the brothers are there. She sits up and says she’s thirsty!

After the credits, the brothers all have something to say. Afterwards, by the light of a full moon that is no longer red, Yui stands on a balcony, holding a rose. Ayato joins her and holds out her necklace. She takes it and smiles, thanking him. The rose falls and the petals scatter. In a dark place, Cordelia is being held back by chains. Her room is chained and locked. So, it looks like she isn’t completely gone after all

I can see there may be some more story to tell, but I really enjoyed this. Again, the episodes were short but they still managed to tell a good story. Dare I hope for another season? That would be really great!

Diabolik Lovers Gets English Dub

posted on 2014-08-21 16:00 EDT

Her nightmare does sound pretty brutal, a “water, water all around but not a drop to drink” situation. Maybe I’ll retry this one when the dub debuts, for the potential humor value of the dub.

Looks like Chris Patton is playing Ayato Sakamaki.

I’m not surprised that this flushed him out as this is a show with characters that lend themselves to his strengths as an actor; he might not even have to act.

Another Ayato…

It’s interesting he came back for this.
I would have expected something with a bit more hype power than something like this.

Here’s my big announcement #anime #fans when it comes to my role in #DiabolikLovers#voiceover #actress

Looks like Maggie Flecknoe is playing Yui Kumori.

Well it has been a while, maybe he wanted something to test the waters with to see if he truly wants to get back in the game.

Unless CP has achieved the “unachievable” and can regularly do anime voiceover work from home, I would suspect/hope that this is just the tip of the iceberg for CP announcements as otherwise would mean that he made the trek out to TX for just one role.
