User received Gatchaman & answers some questions about the release, click to read thread.

If there is a dirt cheap sale I’d rebuy .

I have it all in the ADV Original releases (Except for the Sentai OVA rerelease), that’s still a maybe upgrade since a show that old wont see much improvement over the DVD releases.

Joe Russo: Gatchaman Hollywood Film Will Tell Original Story

Adaptation will center on “genetically altered kids in space war”

If you aren’t going to adapt it properly, then why do it? It’s just cashing In on the name recognition and telling an unrelated story.

At least the middle of the Speed Racer Movie was just like watching a classic episode, surrounded by the unnecessary beginning and ending arcs.

SCIENCE NINJA TEAM GATCHAMAN: A TIMELESS SERIES THAT CONTINUES TO INSPIRE

May 1, 2024 at 10:33 AM

Five-person fighting teams? Bird-inspired costumes? Evil organizations, monsters from beyond the stars, and giant flaming bird ships? If this sounds familiar, then either it’s a really interesting family reunion or you’re diving into the legendary series known as Gatchaman (Kagaku Ninja-tai Gatchaman). This classic laid the groundwork for countless anime that followed, and it’s time to don your cape and dive into the series!

THE CREATOR OF SCIENCE NINJA TEAM GATCHAMAN

Let’s rewind to 1972 when Tatsuo Yoshida, the creator of landmark series like Mach GoGoGo (Speed Racer to western audiences) introduced his science ninja team to the world.

Yoshida had some early exposure to American comics as kid and became intrigued by the idea of costumed superheroes fighting to protect the world. Following this inspiration, he created his own superhero team: five young heroes armed with gadgets, gizmos, and a whole lot of heart.

The success of his creations led to the founding of Tatsunoko Production in the early 60s – alongside his brothers Kenji and Toyoharu, both accomplished mangaka in their own rights.

Thus, the Science Ninja Team Gatchaman was born. This series broke new ground, influencing conventions that would become staples to Tokusatsu media (Japanese media that uses practical special effects and commonly features monsters and superheroes). Concepts like five-person teams, martial arts, and themed gadgets found their roots in Gatchaman. Its impact stretched beyond Japan, inspiring Western shows like Power Rangers, VR Troopers, Big Bad Beetleborgs and more.

Now, let’s talk about the God Phoenix sized elephant in the room: Gatchaman’s cultural impact. This series isn’t just a blast from the past; it’s a cultural touchstone that has left its mark on anime and pop culture. From its iconic character designs to its action-packed storylines, Gatchaman has been so inspirational, it’s been referenced in popular anime like Pokémon, Cutey Honey, and Gintama. The Gatchaman influence can even be found in homage from Western animations like The Simpsons, Winx Club, and Teen Titans. You can’t call yourself a true anime fan without paying tribute to the OG ninja squad.

A LEGACY CONTINUES WITH GATCHAMAN CROWDS

The spirit of Gatchaman lives on in the more recent series, Gatchaman Crowds, a reimagined take on the classic series that blends elements from the original with contemporary social concerns. In Gatchaman Crowds, the team battles not only with evil aliens but also with unconventional thinking and empathy which ultimately lead to creative collaborative solutions.

Gatchaman Crowds is a love letter to the high-minded morals of the original with a modern twist. The series delves into social issues via social media platforms, exploring themes of identity, community, and responsibility in the digital age. It’s a fresh take on the Gatchaman legacy that resonates with the current world where heroes from all walks of life are still needed.

How close can you make a character to say, Jun the Swan of Gatchaman in City of Heroes…

I’d say pretty close, case in point

Her power set is a Martial Arts / Ninjitsu Scrapper.
