GetBackers

Finished up DVD 4-5 last night.

That was a fairly long arc (DVD 3-5), but man it was awesome!
I’m really enjoying the soundtrack too, from the sweeping emotional movements to the lively action scores.

All kinds of super powerful fighting!
Man that was fun.
*
In these DVDs we get to more background on various charaters, like Ginji and why he was labled The Lightning Emperor.
*
All of the main charaters have extremely likable quality, but Kazuki is definitely my favorite character so far (bet you thought it would be Emishi huh??? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/thecoffeegod/smilies/wink.gif)
That thread spinning is awesome!
Akabane would have to be next, just because of his calm cool demeanor regardless of what he faces or what he’s doing.

Finished up DVD 4 and 5 as well last night.

I’m glad you enjoy the soundtrack. Taku Iwasaki is one of the great composers of the industry and this one is one of my favorites. Kind of a shame he isn’t as known about in the last year by anime fans other than due to recent trends ie. (except his work in Gurren Lagann), which as far as I’m concerned was a big disappointment. GetBackers has really awesome battle/action music like his other other action series (ROD TV, Witch Hunter Robin), I said it before in the SciFi thread while we were watching Now and Then here and There/Gurren Lagann, but I think he’s probably the best in the business for this. Also his ensemble string compositions, in GetBackers and ROD TV… they are able to evoke a sense of tension, I think better than any other composer (for example Obsession II’s introduction portions). But I also really enjoy the way he works orchestral, jazz and synthesizers and electro-groove elements into this music. As far as composers abilities to make melodies that immediately touch a viewer and connecting it to the film, I think only Kajiura or Hisaishi is his peer in the anime field.

Oh yeah another theme I really enjoyed in terms of dark tension, the theme of Makubex… when you hear the harp going up and down, and those gorgeous sounding strings. He has a very unique and high quality sound with his intimate but lush orchestras.

These were some really great episodes weren’t they?

Lots of action, comedy and drama. These pretty much were the episodes that made me fall in love with the series back in the day, but I was watching these through VOD, and it was agonizing to wait for episode after episode every week or two, given the great cliffhangers – though in another sense I kind of found that method in some ways rewarding too… letting it all sink in and waiting with great anticipation for the next episode.

Favorite moments:

 • Nonstop battle after battle between the main characters
 • Ginji’s happy dance moments lol
 • Ginji and Akabane making peace “heart in the background” towards the end of the Limitless Fortress arc… the sound effects with Ginji trying to get away after they held hands. Very fun moment lol.

I must say I am surprised at your favorite character… I did think it would be Emishi, not only for obvious reasons… but well I won’t spoil… I’ll just say Emishi has more to show us in coming episodes. (good thing) My favorite’s are definitely Ban, Ginji and Akabane… but really I enjoy all the characters a lot, and I can’t say that of much anime. Even though Ban and Ginji are clearly the anchors of the series, this is still a very fine ensemble cast!

I don’t know if I should mention this or not… but after the exciting conclusion to part 1 of GetBackers… when I first watched this series, I was a little disappointed in how Part 2 starts (goes back to some more comedy/light hearted fare). The first time I watched it I guess I wanted it to keep up the intensity, but after several rewatches later, I actually found the theme of contrasts and how the producers bounced back and forth between drama, intensity and light fun, effective.

DVDs 6 & 7 down.

Thank you so much for suggesting this!
I’m really enjoying this one.
Inbetween all the exciting intense action scenes, the equally intense drama, and of course, we can’t forget about the comedy, it packs a powerful punch. Then throw in a well placed, well orchestrated soundtrack to boot, and it makes it very well rounded anime.
It definitely fits in my watching preferences quite well.

Damn Emishi!
Hitting Ban while he was unconscious like that. That was a serious LOL moment!
*
That last episode (ep. 35) had me in tears.
Inbetween the dramatic musical score and being sucked into the story so deeply that I emotionally indetifying with the characters, I had to shed tears.
That was beautiful.

Though one of the things that’s bugging me about this series…

and one of the things that bugged the hell out of me about Gravitation.
*
What’s with all the chibi??
*
I don’t mind a little being used, and it helps the comedy in some parts, but I never understood why they have to use it all the damn time. I think the series would have been even better if they would have layed off using so much chibi to get their point across.

Overall though, I’m thoroughly loving this series!

Only got to watch DVD Vol 6 last night, going to watch 7 tonight to catch up.

LOL I remember your feelings about chibi, I was actually gonna ask if it was too much for you in this series since there’s a lot of it. But glad you’re enjoying it so much, guess it’s another hit recommendation/blind buy from me eh?

The surprising thing is I seem to be enjoying it more now on this repeated watch (4-5th time) watching it now start to finish, than I did when I first watched it. It’s got some really cool replay value.

Favorite Vol. 6 moments:

 • When they were sneaking around and found out the women’s bath was just old ladies, kind of like the Fumoffu episode lol
 • Sneaking up on Kazuki at the hot spring
 • Emishi’s pickle’d pepper joke, then both Kazuki and Juubei got a blue screen freeze to portray the bad joke. LOL

I loved episode 27 with the Riko and all the slapstick comedy with her annoying the whole crew.
*

 • When they made Kazuki into a gigolo pretty boy… she was like, but that’s just some Gay guy. LOL!
 • When Ban was showing off his powers and broke the street light, she calls the cops!
 • Episode 28 with the spies… The theme, “The Battle in The Warship Islet” when Ban uses his Jagan on the client and he starts to remember… it starts of with a melancholy Ethnic wind instrument and quiet strings. I love this theme! … then it switches to Taku Iwasaki kind of doing his take on trailer music (one passage in the theme is almost exactly like trailer music in US movies), but he changed it up a bit from section to section with his own style, and it still sounded really exciting with the action sequence of the spies going after the couple. Really enjoyed that scene…

Episode 29 starts of the Venus de Milo arc, which I think is a really excellent arc… lots of interesting fighting and comedy.
*

 • I love how it started though with all the comedy moments with Ban and Ginji at the Honky Tonk with Hevn and Clayman. Ginji is such a doof, but you gotta love him… mixing up the Statue of Liberty and Venus, then Ban kicking him out of the Honky Tonk.
 • When they arrived in Okinawa, the whole Emishi scene trying to trick them but Ban using the Jagan on him. LOOOOL!

So did you get a chance to catch up?
Haven’t seen you around, so I thought I’d ask.

Finished up the series tonight.

More! More! I want more!
Though I know it’ll probably never happen, but still.

That was just an awesome series and I’m quite happy you talked me into getting it now.

So of my favorite moments in the last 3 volumes.

Natsumi becomes a Get Backer!
And with the comedic help of Emishi of all people!
*
Back to the Limitless Fortress they go.
Though sadly, the fights seemed it bit rushed this time around, but still awesome none the less.

I really, really loved the soundtrack for this though, it was extrememly well done.
And since I didn’t mention it back when I first hit DVD 6, I definitely enjoyed OP2 more than OP1 as far as songs go. As for the ED songs, none of them really stood out to me.

Oddly, Rai was also watching this this series and he finished it over the weekend too. Boo on him for not posting here.

Sorry for the delay, I had some engagements to deal with on Friday night through Sunday afternoon and was away from the computer/tv. Caught up and watched the last 3 DVDs last night. Good times I tell you.

Glad you enjoyed it! Another blind-buy going right, hehe. I’m running out of things to recommend you though that I know you’d likely enjoy for sure. LOL You’ve pretty much already gotten most my “I’m positive Coffee would enjoy this list.”

I did not want to mention this before as I wanted you to see how it ends without any expectations or pre-thought. As you saw the ending is…

Spoiler

… a bit bittersweet… another one of those manga endings where the full story can’t be concluded. :frowning:
*
For a manga-type ending though I’m glad a lot of the storylines in the second season were at least concluded and there really wasn’t any huge plot-hole, other than one hoping for the next arc beyond the beltline and other stories.
*
It kinda saddens me there are series like this where it couldn’t continue, yet there are tons of mediocre ones out there that can get 100+ episodes. What I would give for a final 25 episodes for Get Backers that covers some more adventures and concluding the Limitless Fortress storyline. I don’t read manga though so I have no idea how expansive this storyline and is even feasible to fit into 26 episodes, but I can dream can’t I?
*
I figured you’d enjoy those portions! As soon as that Natsumi episode played I thought this might be up your alley.

The other bittersweet thing about this series is, this marked the final series that was done at ADV’s Monster Island Studios in Austin, when they closed it down in 2005 when ADV was restructuring and merged its 2 studios when they were making the new ADV Studios. A lot of the Austin talent pretty much lost a lot of access to Anime VAing, except for a handful. :frowning: Get Backers at least even though the production was rushed towards the end, was a great dub to highlight the studio’s closing (not perfect as some of the supporting cast wasn’t as polished), but the main characters I thought were excellent.

I’m watching this series again on the VOD, and it’s come to one of my favorite parts…

The place where the Statue of Liberty… oops! I mean the Venus de Milo gets her arms.

I just finished watching the first episode of this arc and it really reminds me of why I love this series so much. The humor and witty banter, the characters, the settings and the inevitable fight scenes.
*
Ginji always gets to meet up with Akabane and always manages to get out of it in the end. (And, another thing about Akabane, don’t you think he’d want to fix that hat of his?)
*
The Miroku Brothers (who I’m guessing are the same person, but I really can’t remember, short term memory is delightful) are simply delightful as villains.
*
And the big, bad boss man (whose name escapes me) and his evil henchmen… ooooo, they make me want to hide :woohoo:
*
And poor Ban! He almost was thwarted before he got started! And then he had to use the Jagan right away!
*
The only thing I dislike about this series is the overuse of the chibi characters, I’m not a big lover of chibi at all. But I suppose I have to get over it.

So… I look forward to next Thursday with glee to see what happens, because, of course, I don’t really remember… :side:
To make this clear, he also did the music for Now and Then, Here and There. Kind of funny, I never thought of it before, but both those shows played at the same time on SyFy. Now and Then, Here and There easiest has one of the most powerful soundtracks out there. it’s all quite simple, but it’s amazing how much it can all effect you. From an uplifting ballet, to some dark and gloomy piece, he really made that series soundtrack stand out. And the op and ed are two of my all time favorites. This series really knew how to use music to it’s fullest.

As for Gurren Lagann, well it has one or two standout themes (“row row fight da power” comes to mind, along with the main theme IIRC), but it’s not his best effort. I did however enjoy some of the themes in this series when I watched a few episodes. Getbackers has some great background music.

As far as Taku Iwasaki on the whole though, I do think he’s one of the best out there! Even if the only thing he ever did was NTHT I’d say that. But the powerful themes in Witch Hunter Robin, ROD, and (what I’ve heard from) 009-1 really make me respect this man as well.

As for who out there could be considered an equal of his, I’d rank both Shiro Sagisu and Yuki Kajiura at his level.

Episode 34 -

As much as I love this series, it’s been a while since I’ve seen it and I too forget what happens many times. But this is a great episode. I had forgotten all about it. It has so many twists. Ban and Ginji have a fight and dissolve their partnership. But they really didn’t.
*
Then Ban goes to work for the bad guy, but he really isn’t. Ginji comes to get the diamond back and Ban is found out and captured, but really isn’t. There is a funny tribute to Bruce Lee too.
*
They do get the diamond, but one of Shido’s crows steals it and they don’t get the reward after all. Typical!

That was half the fun. You knew somehow they were going to
not get the reward, or be broke real soon after. ] lol Best part of the series is this constant in my opinion. Can’t have the Coyote get the Road runner./spoiler

Exactly!

For all that they constantly go through, those guys will never have any money!

Episode 35 -

This was such an exciting, on the edge of your seat episode!
*
The Get Backers need to retrieve some special stolen blood, so a little girl can have a life-saving operation. Time is of the essence. Of course Akabane is one of the transporters that have the blood. There is a very exciting fight on the top of a truck between Akabane and Ginji and it looks like Ginji falls to his death.
*
I forgot about this! But he is ok and I could breathe again. While unconscious, Ginji has a flashback of his childhood and a little girl that he had befriended back at the Limitless Fortress. She has a dream to live outside someday and even get a puppy. Ginji says that he will protect her because he doesn’t want to see any more lives get stolen. One day, the place where they live is attacked and the little girl dies. The girl in the hospital, Yumiko, reminds him of his lost friend and gives him the determination to wake up and get the blood to save her life.
*
In the meantime, Yumiko’s condition has worsened and Hevn brings her a promised puppy to give her the will to live. By this time, Akabane has delivered the blood, but being Akabane, once the delivery is officially made, takes back the blood. He’s always in things for his own amusement anyway. Ginji shows up and Akabane tosses the case containing the blood to him. There is another exciting fight and Ban arrives in a helicopter just in the nick of time.
*
Yumiko’s operation is successful and her life is saved. The episode ends with a very touching scene of Ginji asleep with Yumiko’s puppy sleeping in his arms. A very sweet tribute to the little girl from his past.

Episode 36 -

When a powerful man kidnaps his grandson, Hevn brings Himiko in on the assignment to assist Ban and Ginji. Ban doesn’t want her along, but reluctantly agrees. Ginji later questions their behavior and finds out that Himiko was also a stolen child. Ban mentions the “curse of the last children”, but doesn’t go into any detail.
*
They get the baby back without any problem, but the nursemaid raises the alarm when she finds the crib empty. The grandfather sends men after them, but orders them not to hurt them if they can avoid it. Ban and Ginji send Himiko ahead with the baby, saying they will handle the men.
*
But a helicopter chases Himiko, forcing her to abandon her bike and hide in the woods. She falls and hurts her ankle but vows to protect the baby. She has an interesting flashback of men chasing her brother, Yomiku, who is holding her as a baby. Someone says “don’t let the sacrifices escape” and another says that they can’t get away because “even if the spell is incomplete, the curse of the last children will someday destroy them.”
*
Himiko protects the baby with her poison and Ban and Ginji catch up to her. The helicopter comes back and Ginji knocks out the searchlight, allowing them to get away. Now Ban has a flashback of Yomiku telling him about the curse and getting him to promise to watch Himiko if anything happens to him. The curse finally appears in Yomiku and he wants Ban to kill him before he goes insane. Ban does and this must be the scene that Himiko walked in on, that Ban never explained. I wonder if Himiko even knows about the curse she carries. And I like that Ban kept Yomiku’s lighter although I don’t know if it’s a keepsake or a reminder of what might happen to Himiko.
*
They get back to the Honky Tonk and reunite the baby with its mother, but now the father is gone. A car came to take him to this father and he went. They all go back to the estate and break up the argument the two men are having. The grandfather admits that he took the baby in order to bring the family back together. I can’t help but think that a phone call might have worked just as well, rather than go through all this.

Episode 37 -

While Ban and Ginji are on an assignment at the beach, Natsumi takes the case of an old woman that has lost her dead husband’s memento. Natsumi leaves the cafe, but I didn’t hear her ask what exactly the memento was and it’s funny that Natsumi is wearing Ban’s shirt and glasses and Ginji’s shorts.
*
She tries to get Shido to help, but he is too busy, so she gets Emishi and he only goes with her because he’s bored. They go back to the old lady’s sold house, but can’t get in. The new residents look like thugs and won’t even speak with her. Natsumi decides to try Ban’s “ultimate strategy” which ended up being pretty funny. It consists of trying to deliver things to the house, food, mail, liquor, etc. Emishi, watching all the costumes changes that Natsumi is making – and liking them – can’t take it anymore and finally joins in. It looks like he thinks she’s really cute in all the outfits and maybe he’s falling for her. Well, they dress up as inspectors from the gas company and the water company and even put on a show outside the house as street performers. I don’t think Emishi ever had so much fun and afterwards, looking at all the tips they got, asks Natsumi to go into show business with him. Natsumi just tells him that the next step is a stake out.
*
As things drag on, Emishi wants to give up for the day and go home, but Natsumi tells him the story of her own memento and the way the GetBackers helped her. Emishi cries but claims that his heart is “sweating”, and he will now do anything to help her. I think he likes her even more now. He goes to get her some dinner, making Natsumi promise not to do anything while he’s gone. She sees the thugs leave the house and Emishi is taking forever to come back, so she gets impatient and goes into the house. She falls into a hole where the thugs have been digging up the floor and gets caught by them.
*
Emishi is still getting the food; he stops at a food stand and doesn’t like the way that the guy is cutting up the octopus, so takes the knife from him and does it himself. Funny. Kazuki shows up saying Shido told him that they were working on a job.
*
Meanwhile, Natsumi is tied up and using a bit of broken glass to cut the ropes while the thugs argue over killing her. She gets away, but they chase her and she defends herself with her backpack full of ping pong balls - of all things! The guys reminded me of the Three Stooges for some reason. They finally manage to catch her, but Emishi and Kazuki show up and save her. There was even one part where Kazuki reminded me a little of Wedding Peach and I almost expected him to say her line. Anyway, with the thugs entangled in Kazuki’s threads, Natsumi poses like Ban and says his line – “did you have a pleasant dream?” This and the reaction of the other two just made me laugh!
*
It turns out that the thugs were using the house to dig a tunnel to a nearby jewelry store in order to rob it and Kazuki scolds Natsumi for breaking into the house – it was just too dangerous for her to do alone. Before they call the police, she wants to search for the memento and the old woman finally gets her dead husband’s love letters back.
*
Now, Ban and Ginji are still at the beach. They had so much fun “sightseeing” that day, that they forgot who they were supposed to meet and what the job was even about!

Episode 38 -

Shido walks into the Honky Tonk to find Ban and Ginji washing dishes. After some bantering, Hevn comes in and Ban thinks she’s there to give them an assignment. However, she’s all dressed up and instead asks Shido if he’s ready to go. They leave behind a confused Ban and an upset Ginji; he’s upset because he thinks that Shido has two women!
*
Hevn and Shido go shopping and Shido buys a fancy suit. I think I had the same reaction Hevn did. Wow! As they walk along the street, an explanation is finally given as to what’s going on. They are going to Madoka’s recital. On the way, they come across a robbery in progress and the robber has taken a child hostage. Shido disappears. The child bites the robber’s hand, gets thrown back and the crazy robber takes aim with his gun to shoot him. But Shido has called the birds to attack him and the child gets saved and the robber arrested. Hevn teases Shido about how much he’s changed since meeting Madoka. As they continue walking, they are being observed by some people in a car.
*
As Madoka wonders if Shido is at the recital hall yet, Hevn says that they’ll be late and hails a cab, but Shido has seen the car and tells her to go ahead while he takes care of something. Shido goes to a park and gets attacked by and man and a woman that can control insects. I hate bugs! Shido calls the birds to eat the insects and then the rats to corner the man and woman. The Insect Master shows up with an unconscious Hevn and Shido finds himself surrounded by spiders. The Insect Master says that he’s there to settle a score with him and Shido screams as the spiders crawl all over and attack him. He calls Madoka’s name and even at the concert, she can hear him.
*
Shido is still screaming, when Ginji’s hand comes out of nowhere and touches him on the shoulder. He gives him a slight electric shock and the spiders fall to the ground, dead and burnt. Shido finds out that he was followed because they thought he was dating Hevn “on the side”. The Insect Master tells Ginji not to interfere and another voice answers him. Ban is sitting on a nearby bench, with the still unconscious Hevn and the two henchmen unconscious at his feet.
*
Shido doesn’t want their help either and gives a little bit of background on the Insect Master. The Insect Master says that he is back to prove that he is better than the Beast Master and promises to kill all of them. He covers Shido with spider silk and again sends the spiders to him. Ginji goes to help him, but Ban stops him. The spiders fall off Shido as his body changes into a bunch of rats, surprising the Insect Master. Ban has Ginji send an electric surge through a tree that burns the webs supporting the Insect Master and he falls towards Shido who then uses his animal power to defeat him. He debates on letting him live, then decides it would be better to kill the Insect Master to prevent him from coming after him again and possibly hurting Madoka in the process, but Ban stops him.
*
Ban calls Himiko and she uses one of her poisons on all of the bad guys to wipe their memories of the last twenty-four hours. Ban tells Shido that they might still come after him and that he should leave Madoka’s house. Shido says he knows and calls Ban a “sea urchin head”, before saying that he needs Madoka. He says that he can’t change his feelings but would kill himself before letting anything happen to her. Ban tells him that he doesn’t have to protect Madoka alone and says that he can always hire the GetBackers for help when he needs it.
*
Shido has missed the recital and has ruined his beautiful new suit. He goes home to find that Madoka isn’t there. He thinks the worst – that the Insect Master might have gotten hold of her somehow and then realizes that’s impossible. Then he remembers her promise to wait for him and he runs to the recital hall to find her there. She launches herself into his arms and asks if he will now listen to her play. She says that she saved a song just for him, and as Madoka plays to her audience of one, Shido swears to protect her.
*
Although I can’t stand bugs, this ended up being such a sweet episode. I’m really happy that Shido has found someone that he cares about enough to change for. And it’s a change for the better!

Episode 39 -

What a comedy of errors this episode was – worthy of the great bard himself!
*
Ginji ends up in the hospital after chasing a rice ball down the side of a building while on assignment. Because of this, Shido was asked to take over the assignment and completed it, which annoys Ban even more. As they bicker, a nurse asks them for help and Ban and Shido think they can use the opportunity to finally settle the question of who’s better. I liked how Hevn complained that they ran off when they should have been there to visit Ginji and then runs off herself after a cute doctor, leaving Himiko alone with Ginji.
*
The nurses ask Ban and Shido to get back their personal items which are letters from patients that the head nurse has confiscated and locked in her locker. The guys take the job at no cost to the nurses and will use it to determine who is better, with the loser agreeing to quit the recovery service altogether.
*
As Himiko peels an apple for Ginji, Kazuki enters the room and thinks he’s interrupting something. He’s looking for Juubei and as he leaves to find him, he says that they “look good together” which puzzles them. Meanwhile Juubei has gotten caught up in a group physical.
*
Ban and Shido need to get the locker key from the head nurse and go after her. Shido turns on his “cat” abilities, but Ban entices him away from the head nurse with a cat toy that he then tosses out a window and Shido chases after it. Ban approaches the head nurse and gets ready to use the Jagan on her, but Shido pops up with a hand mirror, calling it the “secret technique Jagan reflection”. As Ban rolls around the floor in agony and then starts an argument with Shido, the head nurse calls security on them.
*
Kazuki is searching for Juubei and an old lady asks him for some assistance, thinking that he’s a nurse. At the physical, Juubei is asked what he does for a living and I loved his deadpan answer – “I work in the limitless fortress guarding MakubeX from harm.”
*
Back in Ginji’s room, Himiko is still cutting up fruit for the ever hungry Ginji and he is amused to think that Kazuki may be right in saying that they look good together. Very funny straight-faced responses from Himiko – “you’ve got to be kidding” and “in your dreams recovery boy!” Ginji begins to choke on a piece of melon and Himiko leans over him to help. Of course this is the exact moment that Natsumi enters the room and thinks she sees Himiko about to kiss Ginji. She hurriedly apologizes for interrupting and runs from the room. The look on Himiko’s face was great when she realizes what it must have looked like and calls after Natsumi.
*
An annoyed Hevn is stomping down the hall because he found out that the cute doctor was married. She spots Natsumi and asks her what’s wrong. Natsumi tells her about Ginji and Himiko and what they were doing. Ban and Shido are still trying to evade security and end up hiding in trash cans.
*
Kazuki is still thought to be a nurse and is helping patients when the head nurse spots him and assumes he is a nurse in training. She drags him out of the room because of his attire, saying that he will set “the wrong example” because he is not wearing a proper uniform. And Juubei has his own troubles. The physical is getting out of hand and he thinks his life is in danger. Poor Kazuki! The head nurse has gotten him into a uniform and there’s nothing he can do about it because the head nurse has taken the key to his locker, telling him to get back to work. He sure makes a pretty nurse though!
*
Himiko is in Ginji’s room, taking out her frustrations over the misunderstandings by beating up a stuffed bear. Ginji tries to calm her down and gets the stuffed bear thrown into his face. Hevn and Natsumi head back to Ginji’s room with Hevn saying that Natsumi probably has the wrong idea about what she saw, but Natsumi tries to convince her otherwise. Himiko tells Ginji – he still has the stuffed bear stuck to his face - that he may not mind all the misunderstandings, but she does and is going home. She turns to leave, but Ginji grabs her arm, asking not to be left alone and as Himiko struggles to get her arm free from him, she slips on an apple peel. So, when Hevn and Natsumi open the door, they see Himiko lying in bed with Ginji and both are groaning. Hevn immediately covers Natsumi’s eyes and both of them are blushing. Himiko is finally able to get off Ginji and turns to see Hevn and Natsumi at the door. Hevn tells her to feel free to continue what they were doing while Himiko tries to tell them that they have the wrong impression.
*
The nurses are meeting with Ban and Shido and want to know where their letters are when the head nurse catches them all together. She chases the nurses and they tell her that she can have their work lives, but they want their love lives. The head nurse says that the hospital is not the place for a “singles mixer” and continues to chase them. Ban and Shido are watching all this and when the head nurse just misses catching a nurse, she begins to fall down the stairs. Lucky for her, Shido grabs her arm and saves her by pulling her back against his chest. She looks into his eyes, blushes and says that “it’s the first time that I’ve known the warmth of a man’s chest" and snuggles against his “muscular torso”. Ban seizes on the opportunity to take her keys and tells Shido to “keep her company” and runs off. Shido tries to follow him, but the head nurse won’t let him go.

Ban gets the locker open and grabs the bag of letters, but Shido’s crows come in the window and take it from him, delivering it to Shido, standing just outside the door. Shido tells “snake for brains” that “it ain’t over till it’s over” and Ban calls Shido “monkey boy”. The head nurse is tied to a cabinet, but is gradually making her way down the hall as the other nurses watch her progress and with the head nurse calling Shido her love and telling him to wait for her. Shido runs up to the roof with Ban following close behind. They fight over the bag of letters and it goes flying off the roof. Where are Shido’s crows now? And when the guys turn from the edge of the roof, security is right there!
*
Security returns them to Ginji’s room and Hevn apologizes for their behavior. The apology is accepted but they will still have to pay for all the equipment they broke. Ban and Shido start to bicker again and Himiko reminds them that they are there to visit Ginji, so they should be paying attention to him. Hevn and Natsumi remark on her “lovey” attitude. Emishi enters the room in a really good mood with a bunch of flowers and lipstick all over his face. Ginji asks him if something good happened and Emishi says that just as he got there, a bag of letters fell on his head. When he entered the hospital carrying the bag, he says that – “a pack of young nurses grabbed me and showed me their gratitude” – and he even got a few phone numbers. He says that he feels really lucky just as Ban and Shido punch him in the face! As he falls to the floor, he questions what he did to get hit and Ban and Shido say that they didn’t like him “taking the glory for other people’s hard work.”
*
Ginji is holding Himiko back from attacking Hevn and Natsumi and she’s still trying to tell them that they have the wrong idea about her and Ginji. Hevn and Natsumi still think that Ginji and Himiko look good as a couple. Kazuki comes in the room to yell at them all for making too much noise and everyone stares at him in his nurse’s uniform in shock! Juubei passes by, strapped to a gurney, but hears Kazuki’s voice and stops. Kazuki asks him what he’s doing on the gurney and Juubei says that the doctor thinks there’s something wrong with his brain, so he is being sent for a cat scan. In a very noble voice, he tells Kazuki that “we shall meet again someday, until then, I bid you farewell”. Ban asks the “thread spinner” if he shouldn’t be taking care of “flying needle boy” “in his hour of need” and teases him about being a nurse and cross dressing. He also insults his techniques as Kazuki just gets madder and madder and then Ban starts in on Emishi – a “wanna be third rate entertainer”. Next it’s Shido’s turn when Ban calls him a “monkey boy" again and lists all his faults before going back to Kazuki – “a cross dressing nurse, who likes to cosplay” - and the room erupts in a full blown fight! Hevn and Natsumi walk down the hall to have tea in the lobby until things settle down.
*
Ginji tells everyone to “give it a rest” and ends up flying out the window to land on some power lines. The electricity must have done him some good, because he’s suddenly all better and everyone else decides that they wasted their time in being concerned for him. However, as Ginji tells them all to live an “energetic life” Akabane shows up with a basket of fruit. He says that he was so worried, that he “dropped everything” and rushed to be by Ginji’s side. Ginji faints and ends up back in a room with Akabane feeding a very scared Ginji apple slices. Akabane tells him not to be afraid and to just open up his mouth and say “ah”. But why does Ginji’s “ah” turn into a scream?

Episode 40 -

Ban, Ginji, and Natsumi are driving to Madoka’s vacation home and I enjoyed all of the monkey stealing the box lunch scenes. The guys are so gullible! Funny that Ban asks Shido for help and he refuses until Madoka asks him to help as well. He just can’t say no to her!
*
I think it’s also funny that the monkeys are so organized and even give Shido a hard time. And the leader can actually resist Shido’s beast powers too. So, Shido ends up fighting him “mano a mano” and wins. Shido tells the leader to find a new territory, but gets surrounded by the rest of the monkeys. The leader comes back to him and acknowledges Shido as the new leader of the tribe. The rest bow to him as well.
*
When Ban and Ginji bring Shido a box lunch that Madoka made, they meet the new “leader” of the monkeys. I guess they really can call Shido “monkey boy” now! Shido tells them that the monkeys treat him better than the humans do and that he doesn’t have to do anything he doesn’t want to. When he eats the box lunch, the food is so awful that he passes out and Band and Ginji never even got to tell him that Madoka made it.
*
It was very funny to see Ban and Ginji enjoying the open bath and thinking that Madoka and Natsumi have joined them when it is really Shido. The horse’s neigh was hysterical and Ban and Ginji suddenly look like they feel a little “inadequate” with Ginji saying “like a horse”. I just couldn’t stop laughing! Madoka and Natsumi come to investigate all the commotion and Madoka asks Shido how the box lunch was. Shido tells her the brutal truth, still not realizing that she made it. He finally does find out when Madoka cries and Natsumi tells Shido how hard Madoka worked on the lunch; Shido feels bad.
*
However, he takes it out on all the humans, wanting to drive them out of “his” territory. He ends up fighting with Ban and Ginji and they destroy the whole area as the monkeys watch. Funny again that they boys are taken away in a cage! Even the old monkey leader breathes a sigh of relief!

Episode 41 -

Ban and Ginji are filming the activity on an oil rig out at sea, but when Hevn sees the film, she cancels the assignment on them and even pays them – too much – for their time. They realize that something odd is going on.
*
Hevn remembers her past and someone named Eiji that died saving her life. She decides to handle this job herself since it involves research they did five years ago on a special alloy. Hevn gets to the oil rig and takes out some of the commandos – the same group that killed Eiji. She does well until one guard sets off the alarm and Hevn is quickly captured and taken to the “boss”. His face is covered, but I think it might be Eiji.
*
Nice that Ban and Ginji turn out to be two of the guards! Nice too that MakubeX tipped them off! They get control of the situation, but the “boss” escapes. They go after him and find that their attacks have no effect; in fact he is even stronger than they are. It turns out that he is wearing an outfit made from the alloy!
*
Ban manages to uncover his face and it is Eiji! I knew it! A very confused Hevn asks for an explanation. Eiji is a foreign agent that used her to get the data on the alloy. He used her, but perhaps he also really loved her too. He asks her now to return to his country with him and they can start over. But is he just trying to use her again? And he says that if she must stop him instead, he wants to die by her hand.
*
Ban and Ginji leave, but Ginji is reluctant. Ban tells him that “she wouldn’t hurt a fly”. Back at the Honky Tonk, both Ban and Ginji are worried about Hevn and whether or not she went with Eiji, but Ban says that her love life is none of their business. Then Hevn shows up with a job for them! They seem to be relieved, but what happened? Did she kill Eiji or let him go?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SENTAI FILMWORKS LICENSES “GET BACKERS”

HOUSTON, February 1, 2012— Sentai Filmworks proudly announces the licensing of the fan-favorite GET BACKERS, the anime where anything that’s been taken can be returned to its rightful owner by the Get Backers – Ban & Ginji. The 49 episode series was produced by STUDIO DEEN (Hell Girl, Rurouni Kenshin) with series composition by Akemi Omode (Rurouni Kenshin, Kyo Kara Maoh!) and character designs by Atsuko Nkajima (Hakuoki, You’re Under Arrest).

Whether it’s a favorite stuffed animal, a priceless painting or even your last shred of hope, if someone’s taken it from you, Ban and Ginji will get it back. They’re the Get Backers, an expert “recovery” service. And they’ll retrieve what’s been stolen, no matter what it is or who took it. Of course, with Ban’s special “Evil Eye” and Ginji’s lightning strike capability, they’ve got a head start on the crooks. No job is too big, no job is too small. At least not until they pay off their tab at the local coffee shop. It’s 49 episodes of non-stop action. It’s the Get Backers Complete Collection – don’t let anyone take yours!

GET BACKERS will soon be available digitally through multiple outlets, with a home video release on bilingual DVD scheduled for later this year.

Well my life just officially hit the extra sucky point. I was re-watching Getbackers a couple weeks ago when I hit log-in problems, and now the show isn’t available anymore. I was all the way through Monkey Counterattack, although I guess I can hope that there are more eps than what I’ve seen here and that Sentai releases all of it, but that’s rather poor compensation for lot getting to finish watching a great series through again.
