Characters to be guessed:

Taro Komori – a 14 year old boy; quiet, well-behaved and somewhat withdrawn. Eleven years ago, when he was three, he and his older sister were kidnapped. Taro was rescued, but his sister died before they were found. His whole family is still dealing with the aftereffects of the kidnapping. Taro continues to have very vivid dreams of the kidnapping and his sister, and is beginning to have OBEs (out of body experiences). He records what he remembers of his dreams on a tape recorder and has weekly counseling sessions at school to help him deal with it.

Masayuki Nakajima - a new transfer student from Tokyo; brash and somewhat obnoxious. He has read a great deal about the kidnapping of the Komori children. He befriends both Taro and Makoto in an attempt to learn more about the kidnapping. Despite his outgoing nature, Masayuki has secrets of his own.

Makoto Ogami – sullen, withdrawn and hot tempered. Makoto seldom comes to school, preferring to stay home and play his guitar. His father committed suicide shortly after the kidnapping of the Komori children, and as a result it was assumed by many that he was involved. Shortly afterwards, Makoto’s mother left the family and has never return. Makoto is at first resistant to Masayuki’s advances, but eventually comes around. He is a distant relative of the Komori family.

Michio Hoshino – a classmate of Taro, Masayuki and Makoto. He’s something of a nerd. After Masayuki stands up to some bullies on his behalf, they become good friends.

Miyako Komagusu - the daughter of a local priest; slightly younger than the boys, but she is very mature for her age. Miyako is prone to being possessed by spirits. These possessions never last long or seem to do any harm, but they are becoming more frequent. She helps her father at the shrine, assisting in performing exorcisms and the like.

Dr. Atsui Hirata – a psychiatrist from Tokyo. He has recently become Taro’s therapist and makes weekly trips to Suiten to counsel him. Calm, cool and always collected, Dr. Hirata is extremely interested in Taro’s OBEs.

Dr. Reika Otori - a neurologist who works at the hospital in a nearby town part-time. She also works at Dai Nippon Bio as a bio-tech researcher. She seems to take an unusual interest in Taro and the other boys.

Furusawa - a lab assistant of Dr. Otori at Dai Nippon Bio. He doesn’t say much, but is aware of what is going on at Dai Nippon Bio.

Yoshiya Komori – Taro’s father; a brewer by trade. Of the Komori family members, he has been best able to cope with the kidnapping and the loss of his daughter.

Miki Komori – Taro’s mother. Her mental state has been very fragile ever since the kidnapping. She is on medication, but even seemingly harmless comments can cause her control to teeter on the breaking point.

Kei - a young woman; the head brewer at the Komori’s brewery. Happy and carefree, a woman in an occupation usually reserved for men. She learned her trade from her grandfather, the former head brewer.

Yashuhiro Nakajima – Masayuki’s father; a researcher at Dai Nippon Bio. He tends to work long hours. He is disappointed in Masayuki’s lack of enthusiasm about school.

Chika Nakajima - Masayuki’s mother. She spends most of her time playing video games.

Himeko Ogami - Makoto’s grandmother. A domineering old woman who runs a religious sect. She tries to run Makoto’s life and expects him to become the head of the sect after her.

Sanae Ogami - Makoto’s mother. She left shortly after Makoto’s father committed suicide and has been living in a neighboring town ever since. She has had no contact or communication with Makoto since she left.

Noriko Kabata – a middle-aged woman who helps Himeko Ogami.

Kaibara - the owner of a small coffee shop; a theoretical physicist by training. His family is wealthy and he owns a large house where he lives with Makoto’s mother.

Takahito Komagusu - Miyako’s father; priest of a local shrine. He is a priest only because his family has tended the shrine for many years. Before taking over the care of the shrine, he was a professor of Japanese folklore and mythology. He is very concerned about Miyako and the succession of possessions that she has undergone.

Aya Komagusu – Miyako’s mother. She divorced Takahito and moved to Tokyo to pursue her own career. She does see Miyako from time to time.

Chiho - a friend of Miyako’s from school.

Suzuki – a middle-aged man. He claims to be from the Prefectural Public Relations Department, but is awfully noisy for that to be all of it. Always snooping around and taking pictures.

Saruta – an old man who has been wandering Japan for many years. Recently, he has more-or-less taken up residence on the mountain near the shrine.

Mayor Motoi - the mayor of Suiten, and a typically sleazy local politician. He knew Taro and Makoto’s fathers when they were younger.

Narrator – as it says; female.

And there you go!

It’s great that this mystery gets to be enjoyed again. The dub is really good so far. The first episode pulls you right in to the strange story and sets up things nicely. Another one that will be wonderful to watch a second time around!

Maybe it’s just my inexperience with voice actors, but the first episode seemed like it was a lot of newcomers. If that is so, it’s nice to see people stepping out for what can be a very challenging career.

So far the voices all fit well enough for me.

Don’t get me wrong, rebecca1/2, the voices work for me, too. I’m just saying that either it’s nice to see new talent emerge or I need to watch more anime… well, I guess both statements are true!

Should a new version of this thread be started for the dub?

I’m gonna definitely check this out. Ghosts, what could be more entertaining?

Watched the first episode and looks like it will be interesting.

I loved this show the first time around, and so far I’m enjoying the dub. I was very worried about it, as the original performances were excellent. So far though, the dub is holding up quite well. I can’t wait for more!

Episode 2 –

The story of the kidnapping is revealed and how it differed from others at about the same time. It also seems that Makoto’s father might have been involved, but the case was never solved. I like how they showed a knife cutting a fried egg yolk right when Masayuki said that Makoto’s father was found with his throat slit. But I wonder why Masayuki is so interested in the details of the kidnapping. I don’t blame Taro for feeling harassed.
*
Taro visits the shrine he saw during his OBE to find everything he saw was real, including the trail to the dam. Does this prove he dreamed correctly or did he really have an OBE? He begins to walk on the trail, but is quickly engulfed by a spooky fog. He thinks he sees his sister, but she turns into a spirit. He also comes across the giant spirit that represents his kidnapper in his nightmares. I can see why he sees this as a giant spirit. Not only was his kidnapping terrifying, but a three year old does perceive adults as giants. He also encounters a blue face as he stumbles back to the shrine. Again, was he only dreaming?
*
Taro meets Miyako sweeping up and she tells him that the shrine isn’t a place for children to play, which annoys him. He then asks her if she saw him the other day as he was flying overhead. She just looks at him and just gives him a mysterious “maybe” as she walks away, which makes him even more annoyed because he knows that she did see him. This part was amusing. Miyako acts so much older and wiser than Taro, leaving Taro looking like a child.
*
Later, Taro re-lives some of his nightmare with Dr. Hirata and the giant black spirit almost forms a face. The face is the one from the police reports, but I’m not sure if Taro is really remembering the face or if it’s just something he remembers from his exposure to the media and he superimposes it onto the spirit.
*
Meanwhile, Masayuki is still snooping about the kidnapping and gets some more details from Michio, while standing on a bridge. He also gets an inkling of “rumors” about the abandoned hospital where Taro was found. But as he looks off the bridge, it looks like he might have a fear of heights. In fact, all the boys seem to have issues so far. Besides Taro and Masayuki, Makoto seems anti-social and it was also shown that he was the one that found his dead father. That must be really hard for a child to deal with – no wonder he’s anti-social.
*
I like how the episode ended with the shot of the old hospital building and the weird sound effects. I think the first time I watched this, the subtitles may have distracted me. With the dub, the story seems so much more creepy than the last time. And I’m really enjoying the dub itself too, although I agree with Cody that the original cast was excellent.

For those that ordered from Rightstuf should be shipping soon as it’s been reserved.

I love the creepy feeling this show gives off especially late at night when its super quite. I’ve always thought lucid dreaming was an interesting topic. I’m stoked for Thursday!

The DVD sets are reserved, but the bluray sets still appear to be on order. I hope they don’t run into the same delay issues as the Legend of the Dark King sets.

I am wondering if S23 did not pick the wrong place to have the Blu-ray’s done. My thoughts are whoever it is may be giving Hollywood studios higher priority over someone like S23. Maybe they should just list the Blu-rays for a month after the DVD’s that way if they do show up even after the DVD’s they are getting them out really early instead of late or just on top.lol Though they still got about two weeks before this is late.

Though I heard a rumor the other day their is a shortage of Blu-ray disc so that could be true and have something to do with all this. I have been noticing stores getting less copies of Blu-rays lately.
