Is it a mistake when Duke Togo asks the bartender who the woman is that had the strange reaction on seeing Togo, you see the bartenderâs mouth move, but thereâs no voice? I suppose watching it in Japanese with subtitles would answer the question.
Tomorrow is a bittersweet day as it marks the end of Golgo 13 dub updates for TAN.
Itâll be sob my third time reliving the end of the series. It was a classic. Interestingly, IMO, it managed to go 50 episodes, with each episode being its own contained story, without being crap (as I find most episodic Western shows to be). Iâd totally sacrifice some overly-long-running Shounen to get more Golgo. Golgo does more in an ep than Bleach does in a season 
BTW, the subs I have for that scene say:
âAh, thatâs Madam Bardot. She probably isnât feeling very well.â
Looks like Sentai, much like the Japanese animation studio, could have stood to spend a little more time & money on this title. IMO we could do well with some more anime titles that have stoic badass manly protagonists of age instead of, well, what we get in seemingly most anime.
Well, thatâs odd that they didnât dub that bit of dialouge.

I hear that Sentai has to really crank out these dubs nowadays (possibly explaining the painful lack of commentary tracks), and I think most of 'em are spectacular, but little lapses like this make me wonder if theyâre starting to fall prey to the old âhaste makes wasteâ.
If Sentai needs someone to watch all of their dubs for quality assurance Iâm sure Iâd know someone for the jobâŚ
There is some strange pronounciation of words early on in the dub for 50, also. Iâd have to play it back again to quote specifics, but a couple times letters are added that make it the wrong word.
I rewatched ep 47 with the dub to relive the hilarity of the barkeep flapping his gums but with no dialogue. I donât think it was intentional, unlike the notorious hilarity in Guin Saga, but I guess we could spin it as âGolgo hearingâ, that is, Golgo wasnât listening to the words coming out of the manâs mouth so why should we? :laugh:
I find it odd, because there was definitely some concerted effort, successful IMO, to put humor into the dub in the pre-hiatus releases. I get the feeling that Sentai couldnât spend as much time on the dub after they got this title back from its hiatus as they could before. That, and that Greg Ayres alone canât check every nook and cranny of each and every Sentai dub for quality.

I also went back through ep 50 (reliving the end of an era for the 4th time lol). I did again notice that the man who hires Duke Togo sounded a bit odd to me. Almost as odd as Golgo showing emotion (or at least facial expression) a few seconds later. Which, in turn, is almost as odd as I found Hilary Haagâs voice coming from the nameless nurse to be. Also frustrating was Hilary Haag as the alarmed patron in the restaurant. Sheâs awesome, but to be 2 disparate characters in one ep just canât be done.
Anyhow, I noticed some serious issues with the pronunciation, as you mentioned. The man who runs the orphanage (voiced by Mark X. Laskowski) starts off calling a man âTed-wardâ, which might be a name, but then he starts sounding like Barry from The Big Bang Theory when he then says âgen-ah-wuhsâ (generous), âcuh-wah-pa-wayâŚâ(cooperaâŚ) & âsay-wingâ (saying). Then he starts to speak with âdefinite dictionâ as though he went to the same speech class as Leo DiCaprio.B)
Thereâs a bit, around 08:56 (during the shakedown phone call), where the lips of the adoptive father are moving but no sound is coming out; between âThatâs right: we can erase our gang tattoosâ & âbut we canât erase the past.â is where the âsilentâ lip-flap is, but it shouldnât be. Itâs like Sentaiâs line wasnât long enough for the scene and they just said âah, hell with itâ and crammed it in. :dry: :huh:
Was Mark X. Laskowski off his A-Game?
Thereâs also an awkward transition to the middle-of-the-show title card: the 70s-esque music that is playing when Golgo is demonstrating his âbadasseryâ sounds cut off; it didnât end cleanly for the transition, it cuts off in mid bass-note.
BTW, in the fictional USA in which Golgo takes place, the media must REALLY suck if they havenât already figured out the secret that the guy who hired Goglo wants to make sure is kept.
Rewatching this has shown me, literally, how awful DVD video looks when upscaled to 1920*1080. Sorry Goglo, you got the shaft on that.
So come September I can buy the blu-ray of this and watch it again? Thatâs what the info going around the interwebs says but I almost canât believe it.

Any bets on whether or not theyâll fix the dub issues that were in the last 2 volumes (on DVD)?
As much as I enjoyed this show, think Iâm gonna pass on the BD, for now at least. This show was just so âuglyâ and grainy on DVD, think how more so itâll be on BD.
Maybe Iâll give it another run thru to help me decide on BD or not.
While I donât think that this show is going to become a title to showcase HD anime when it is on blu-ray, after watching some of it again a few weeks ago I have to suspect that the limitations of the DVD are bringing the show down.
No matter what upscaler I use, whether it be PowerDVD, a hardware stand-alnone player or the vaunted PS3 DVD versions of shows look like crap on even a lower-end 1080 monitor by themselves and worse compared to their blu-ray counterparts. I donât know how I watched DVD quality video for so long as my first ever smartphone has a higher resolution than does DVD video.
If properly done ( :dry: ), and the 2008 Golgo 13 show was originally done in HD, the bluray will only be brought down by the cheap animation and illustration used in the show and not the limitations of the format and Iâm willing to pay to see the show in such a way. Bring it on Sentai.
Just make sure that you make those wiley Japanese send you the proper video materials though.
Have a little contest and give the barkeep voice roll to some lucky fan. Itâs just a couple lines, how hard could it be to find someone to speak them?
LOL, kinda like the contest the dubbers of Patlabor the TV Series ran back in âthe dayâ for a fan to voice Otaâs âblind dateâ (all of which was chronicled, in video, as a DVD extra that I hope Sentai/Maiden managed to preserve on their rescue release)?
Maybe they could get Stephen Foster to do it. His Orphen Outtakes were humorous IMO.
Iâve heard that Sentai dubs whole series in ~6 hours/actor. With that kind of breakneck speed it would only take them a few seconds to fix the lines in the last volumes and dub the silent bartender.
Sentai, if you do go back and dub it, please do not take out the âcolor filterâ lines. Those were frickinâ hilarious. :laugh: :laugh:
