Gurren Lagann / Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

I’m not so optimistic: the (backward) Japanese system of using the sales of related physical goods to bankroll a show has been going on far too long, with a history of what the Japanese are calling a success, to change.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the goal of the Japanese were to force its high-priced goods upon America, thinking that if they buy in at these astronomical prices, great, but if not they (US market) were always just chump change in the grand scheme of anime.

Pessimism says that the Japanese will change us, we won’t change them (and that they’ll run anime further into the ground by doing so). While the US invented He-Man, in this case it is the Japanese who “have the power!”

Gainax’s 2007 series to premiere on service this fall

North American anime distributor Viz Media announced at its Viz Animation panel at Otakon on Sunday that the Gurren Lagann television anime series will premiere on the company’s Neon Alley service this fall. All Neon Alley shows are streamed uncut and with an English dub.

Viz Media had announced last month that the Neon Alley service is now available for PCs and Macs in addition to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. Neon Alley will also have a new feature coming soon that will allow subscribers to catch up on episodes they’ve missed on either on the Xbox 360 or PS3 app or online.

Viz had also previously announced last month that Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Magi will also stream on the service this fall.

Aniplex of America recently released Gainax’s Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann television anime series in a new DVD box set and the company also brought over imported sets of the Blu-ray Disc box set from Japan that included the television anime series, the two compilation films, and other video extras.

Bandai Entertainment released the original 2007 television anime series on DVD in North America, and Aniplex of America released the two compilation films in North America in 2010.

Gainax’s robot anime to premiere on August 16 at 2 a.m.

Adult Swim, the American television network paired with Cartoon Network, announced on Saturday that it will run the robot anime Gurren Lagann in its Toonami programming block. Toonami will begin running the series on August 16 at 2:00 a.m. ET/PT.

The anime studio Gainax premiered the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann television anime in Japan in 2007. The Gurren Lagann the Movie –Childhood’s End- compilation film debuted in Japan in 2008, and its sequel film Gurren Lagann the Movie – The Lights in the Sky Are Stars premiered in 2009. Aniplex USA released the Japanese Blu-ray Disc box set that includes the series and both films in North America last year.

The series has also inspired two Gurren Lagann Parallel Works original video anime, various manga adaptations and spinoffs, and most recently, a stage play.

Gainax’s 2007 series starts in HD on August 16 at 2:00am

During the latest Tumblr Q&A for Adult Swim’s Toonami block, a fan question about Gurren Lagann was announced in the most ideal of ways. Gainax’s 2007 series is set to run on Toonami starting August 16 at 2:00am.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann features the white-hot combination of director Hiroyuki Imaishi and writer Kazuki Nakashima, who most recently joined forces again for Trigger’s Kill la Kill.

Here’s the original video announcement:

As for whether or not it will be in HD, some premature doubt was quickly shot down:

@ASSauLTxMasTER Jeez, learn to be happy before moving on to what to be sad about. It WILL be in HD, second goodie still to come. PATIENCE.

The only bonus that I’m interested in is its ADV dub. Throw that on the BD and I’ll get it.

The regression to singles in this day and age is sad. Especially at that price point: I remember singles being ~$30, and they came with more than what AoA is giving us for $50.

Company previously released the series in an imported Blu-ray set last year

Aniplex of America announced at its Nan Desu Kan panel on Saturday that it will release the Gurren Lagann television anime series domestically in five volumes on Blu-ray Disc. Aniplex released the series in an imported Blu-ray box set last year.

The first of five domestic Blu-ray Disc releases is slated to ship on November 11 followed by the second volume on December 9. Subsequent volumes will be released every month with exact release dates to be announced in the future. Each Blu-ray will include five episodes with the original Japanese dialogue with subtitles and the English dub. The first two volumes are bundled with a double-sided poster and 16-page booklet. Preorders for the first two volumes will open on September 16.

Gurren Lagann is currently running on Adult Swim’s late-night Toonami block.

Every other month? Is AoA trying to see how far they can push consumers?

If aoa were making a bona fide luxury product then this would be different but they’re just making junk releases artificially scarce and calling it luxury. The lazy approach.

Would it really kill them to put the ADV dub out there? Honestly they ought to be mortified to release their cut rate dub as that is an embarrassment to the whole anime community.

Seeing as how the ADV TTGL license was actually revoked, it’s entirely possible that any part of the dub that ADV actually did for this is “lost” forever and AoA or even AoJ has no way of releasing it, save for the less legal way.

Some things just get “lost” over time, either through stupidity, misplacement (purposeful or not) or out right refusal of it.

What…?
5/6 BD singles for a 2007 show.
Not even a single nendoroid for an extra.

BAH!!!:silly: I say…

It’s as if Aniplex looked at the history of Bandai and Geneon and came to the conclusion that those companies failed in the US as they weren’t harsh enough to the consumer :silly:

Someday the legendary ADV dub will emerge (fingers crossed)

C’mon Aniplex, those extras aren’t all that impressive for what is one of your A-list shows, especially for the price.

For a while now, dubs have become the property of the licensor. Perhaps the way ADV was jilted is an exception to that but, regardless, the partial ADV dub would be an extra worthy of my interest. The dub that is bundled is an “anti-extra”.
