Puella Magi Madoka Magica / Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magica

Looks like this has been added to the description of all the releases

"Due to licensing restrictions, this product cannot be shipped to Japan."

I find this rather amusing actually, though quite expected.

It’s amusing because, they said this at Otakon Iwakami panel:

“18:12:59 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> it will have special packaging so even japanese fans will want to buy it”
 Japan .
Never tell a true fan that they can’t have something.

Just how expensive will these releases end up being in Japan?

I shudder to think.

Mark Gosdin
It’s being released over 6 Limited Edition Blu-ray or DVD’s or 6 regular DVD’s in Japan.

Msrp For all 6 Japanese Blu-ray LE’s at current conversion rate is like: $575.28
Msrp For all 6 Japanese DVD LE’s at current conversion rate is like: $493.08
Msrp For all 6 Japanese DVD RE’s at current conversion rate is like: $410.88

Amazon Japan it’s a little cheaper like around $420.00 for the Blu-ray LE’s and $378.00 for the DVD LE’s.

Though then you’d also have to figure in international shipping. Plus you don’t get English subs or English dubs. So really the upcoming American release is a steal.

I’ll be getting money early next year but 75*3=225, oh geeze, I really want those sets though, I don’t want Aniplex of America to think they can sell shows like this at that price in America though, and if I really wanted to splurge I would grab the Read or Die set from them.

I will own this series and I think I will grab the first set L.E. and then probably decide on set 2 and 3 from there.

Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of Japan honored Evangelion, Denno Coil before

The Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of Japan (SFWJ) announced that the Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime series is one of five nominees for the 32nd Nihon SF Taisho Award on Monday. With this award, SFWJ honors the best in the fields of science fiction and fantasy during the past year.

The Nihon SF Taisho Awards are the rough Japanese equivalent of Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America’s Nebula Awards. Most of this year’s nominees and previous years’ winners of the Nihon SF Taisho Awards have been novels and short stories, but SFWJ notes that criticism, manga, illustrations, film, television, video, music, and other media are eligible.

This year’s other four nominees are:
Dynamic Figure by Koji Mishima
Karyu no miya (The Ocean Chronicles) by Sayuri Ueda
Kibo (Hope) by Hideaki Sena
Gendai Nihon Kiso Shosetsu Shi Meiji-Hen (A History of Modern Japanese Fantasy Novels: Meiji Period) by Junya Yokota

Previous winners have included Project Itoh’s Harmony novel, the Denno Coil anime series, Moto Hagio’s Barbara Ikai manga, Mamoru Oshii’s Innocence anime film, Tow Ubukata’s original Mardock Scramble novels, Hideaki Anno’s Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series, Shusuke Kaneko’s Gamera 2 film, and Katsuhiro Otomo’s Domu manga. The late Guin Saga author Kaoru Kurimoto and the late author/anime “science-fiction researcher” Takumi Shibano also received special awards.

‘Puella Magi Homura Akemi’ T-shirt to be released in November

Nijigen Cospa, a subsidiary of the cosplay outfit store chain Cospa, is currently taking pre-orders for a T-shirt featuring the Puella Magi Madoka Magica character Homura Akemi. The full-graphic T-shirt features one of Homura’s lines from the show written in English. The white T-shirt, which comes in medium, large and extra large sizes, is retailing for for 6,300 yen (about US$83) and is scheduled to ship in the middle of November.

Other Puella Magi Madoka Magica merchandise have included a beach set with a pool and Charlotte mouth swim tube, a Homura Akemi hugging pillow cover, a shape-shifting Charlotte the Dessert Witch plush, a Kyubey punching balloon, Madoka Magica-themed ramen and curry sets, and a Kyubey hugging pillow.

YAY! More PMMM!
Though I love the idea of more PMMM, I’m just not sure what a movie would do for the story.

So it looks like it might actually be real, but we’ll have to wait until the actual Newtype issue is out and confirmed to know anything for sure.

Note: I just received the following from Aniplex today involving the releases of the series in a PDF file:

Thank you very much for your pre-order of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. This letter is to inform you that there has been a revision to the product features with all the Madoka Magica releases. The following will not be included as an Extra to the Madoka Magica releases:

Textless Endings

The Textless Openings will still be included with all the releases; however the textless endings will not be included. We apologize for any misunderstanding and any inconvenience this has caused you. If you are not satisfied with the revision, please contact your store in regards to their pre-order policy.

Thank you very much for your time and understanding.

Sincerely,
Aniplex of America
That’s kind of an odd thing to leave out.
But considering the main ending is not really all that nice of an ED animation, and we get the full song as the Kalafina music video, I’m not too bothered by it.

However, for those that want to see what they’ll be missing, here’s the ED.

That’s just damn odd. I’d hope this is not because of reverse importation since the only authorized US seller of this can’t ship it to Japan. The release in another country has them. I think I might write them when I get time and ask about this plus the material the collectors box is going to be made of.

I’m curious about that that as well.

The ANN article on the movies has an interesting little tidbit in the update.

2 films to be compilation of TV series; 1 film to be all-new story

Atsuhiro Iwakami, the producer of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime, is revealing in the December issue of Kadokawa Shoten’s Newtype magazine on Thursday that the upcoming theatrical film project will be a trilogy. In particular, two films will be a compilation of the television series, while one film will be an all-new story.

Iwakami made the comments in an interview that also included director Akiyuki Shinbo (SHAFT), original character designer Ume Aoki, and writer Gen Urobuchi.

Update: Urobuchi had already pretty much finished the final draft for the new film, and production is proceeding next. According to Shinbo, the subtitle of the new film is still undecided, but he really wanted to call it “Incubator no Gyakushu” (“Incubator Strikes Back” or “Incubator’s Counterattack”)

The Aniplex USA Facebook page responded to a question from someone about the Textless Ending situation.

That’s so vague!
And odd.

Though like I said, we really aren’t missing much, especially since we get the full song in the Kalafina music video.

Kind of sounds like the Japanese reverse importation fears strike again. Hopefully the subs are not locked on for the Blu-ray like some of the Aniplex stuff Funimation and NISA have put out. Kind of the bummer part of being in the same Blu-ray region is the Japanese reverse importation fear got worse and we usually get a lesser release. Plus they don’t like/understand the fact entertainment is not as valuable over here.

On those BDs, couldn’t you turn them on and off before starting it, but couldn’t switch them on and off during play?
If so, I can live with that.

A large part of it might be reverse impot fears, though another part, may be that some of the eps. have credits during the end of the ep. rather than the regular ED

Eps. 1, 2, 9 & 11
Don’t have the regular ED, the credits play during the end of the episode.

Ep. 10
Has the OP as the ED.

Ep. 12
Has the OP song playing during an end of series credit roll, with an epilogue after.

The Funimations ones were I believe tied to the Japanese track. As long as that was the selected language the subtitles were stuck on. I believe NISA was stuck on from the get go since their releases are sub only. Course both do combo packs and they are not stuck on the DVD’s.

Hmm…
I can live with that as well.

The only time I’ll be watching the Eng. dub anyways, is when I’m showing it to my best friend.
And she likes it with both dub and sub on, and if that’s availible, then I really have nothing to complain about.

So as it turns out, looks like the Taiwan release wasn’t suppose to get the Textless ED either, so it’s causing a delay in the release of their Vol. 2 DVD.

To be updated daily with new voice clips

EARLIER: The official Puella Magi Madoka Magica Twitter account tweeted a link to a Puella Magi Madoka Magica “Secret Project” teaser website featuring Madoka voice samples.

So far there are a handful of different quotes to hear, and a soul gem pictured. Roughly translated, here are some of the clips currently available:
*I still remember Homura clearly, too, even now.
*I think it’s a really wonderful thing that someone can be happy through miracles and magic.
*I won’t let anyone’s prayers end in despair!

The FAQ says everything will be revealed in a few days, so all we can do is hit reload for now…

UPDATE: Someone apparently managed to figure out a strategy to parse out all the mp3 URLs, but it still doesn’t solve the mystery. That, and you can no longer (?) click through to hear the ones that haven’t been revealed yet.

The full list of 23 can be seen here in Japanese, but below is a sample of some of the other quotes that are said to be included:
*You’re all my best friends, from now on, too.
*The prayers for the sake of someone else are definitely the strongest ones.
*Everybody, the tiniest of miracles might happen.
*Let’s make a Puella Magi team once again.
