SYNOPSIS: Things seemed to be going so well for Muneakira Yagyu. On top of dealing with Jubei, the immortal samurai warrior who fell out of the sky and into his arms and lips, he used his ability to awaken the latent power of a female samurai with a kiss to successfully juggle a handful of very powerful, very female master samurai, AND led them all to victory against the minion of a great evil. So was it too much to ask for a little break in the routine of saving Japan? Apparently it was, as another great evil has appeared in the land, this one even stronger than the last. However, that’s the LEAST of Muneakira’s problems, because with all the women he’s kissed in order to awaken their latent samurai powers, the inevitable has finally happened. Someone’s taking the long walk down the aisle with a samurai girl! It’s going to be a REALLY old fashioned wedding and any resistance by the groom will be totally feudal in SAMURAI BRIDE!

Looks like it’s Mayou and Samurai Bride for me.

Interesting things to note:

-BUSOU SHINKI is DVD only (probably due to licensing restrictions)

 • No dub for Henneko (Which actually surprises me)

 • kind of suspected Mayou wouldn’t get a dub, due to it being a recent acquisition and sales weren’t all that great in Japan. But we are getting a Blu-Ray release, so it evens out.

This is a very tough slate because there’s nothing here I’m targeting at the present time but there are titles here I wouldn’t mind owning down the line.

Maybes:
Dog & Scissors
LEVIATHAN ~ THE LAST DEFENSE
MAOYU - ARCHENEMY & HERO
BUSOU SHINKI

It was hard to read through this list. I’ll just hope that y’all will inspire Sentai to give these the Maria Holic/Princess Resurrection treatment sometime.

EDIT: Does Funimation’s release of Attack on Titan in June offer any explanation as to why Sentai’s June slate is so low-key?

Dog & Scissors, and the Hentai Prince are the only ones on my radar.

Unless there’s some OVA or something, I’m not going to rush to buy them (I still have a bit of a back catalog to buy still)

Now that June is up for pre-order, I can put in my big Sentai order (or more specifically, several small orders so they ship out properly.)

I’ll have to watch Maoyu one of these days and decide on that one.

So from June, just Henneko for me.

Samurai Bride for sho’.

Everything else is a wait and see, specially Maoyu (one disk, really?)

If it’s a BD50, then it’s ok, it would be around 3.5 - 3.8GB (for 13) an episode depending how much space the extras take up. If it’s a BD 25 then that’s DVD quality and really not worth paying the extra for the BD. Can we get some clarification on this?

If the previous releases were on BD25s at between 8-9 eps on a Disc (3.1 for 8 eps, and around 2.75GB an episode for 9) Again depends on how much space the menu / extras take up.

Both Henneko & Maoyu at the moment are planned to have 1 BD, which was confirmed with S23 by WTK on Fandompost.

This can’t be good. Trying to fit all of that on one single disc? Wonder if this is a typo…
I checked with S23 earlier today. 1-disc is what’s planned right now (same thing for MAOYU).
Sentai’s collections usually use one BD50 (eps. 1-9) and one BD25 (eps. 10+).

Which means, they’ll probably be using one BD50.

Well I don’t expect the extras to need much space. A silver lining. Can’t wait for these 100 GB bds to become practically priced. It would still be weird to see 12 eps on one disc after two has been the norm for so long. Is this the turning point, the equivalent to when anime on DVD went dual layer?

Though with the bd case able to hold two discs why go for one fifty instead of two twenty-fives?
A lot of you guys have asked us about some of our June Blu-ray releases coming on only one disc, specifically Maoyu and HENNEKO. The official answer is:

An English audio track takes up a lot of space on a Blu-ray disk, and since these releases contain just one audio track (Japanese audio), there is more than enough room on one Blu-ray disk for all episodes without degradation of quality.

There you have it!
Pet Girl of Sakurasou was released sub only and both volumes are 2 disc sets, so please understand if my BS sense is tingling right now.

Don’t know how disk authoring works, but all I can think is maybe they’ll actually use the full 50gigs on the BD and not stop 2/3 or even 3/4 of the way.

It is possible to put 13 episodes on one BD-50 without loss to the quality . The problem is when a company hires people that don’t know how to do it properly. We end up with all kinds of video and audio issues. The difference I fear Sentai is failing to realize is when other companies do it they lower the cost to reflect the lower disc count. Which if there is problems people are more forgiving as they got it cheap. Warner Bros. In order to cut the cost on putting stuff like Beware the Batman on Blu-ray cut back to one disc for 13 episodes . The difference in that case is most American shows come out a bit shorter then a standard anime series episode. I will give the shadow of a doubt to Sentai ,but my fear of them hiring people like the ones that do Mill Creek or Echo Bridge releases will be in the back of my head leaving me waiting to I see reviews of each releases to buy instead of pre-ordering. So hey might make me wait to the Rightstuf 12 days sales and save some cash.

Guess it could be worse they could use Blu-ray flippers.

They don’t have to sound so cheerful about it :frowning:

If only they could have started this back with Persona 4 as then I could have had all 24 episodes on 2 discs and thus condensed it into one BD case instead of 2. Dubbed-only bluray was something that I could get behind. Sub-only BD’s sole advantage is higher image quality and, like others, I’m skeptical of this; just because it can be done doesn’t guarantee that it will be.

Persona 4 is a sad “special” case, being one of the last Aniplex titlse that they allowed to go to someone else other that AoA.

I wonder how many people would have been interested in paying AoA prices for Persona 4. It was fun, sure, but it wasn’t “amazeballs”. I’m glad that the BD did happen as only in the most extreme circumstances can I abide by buying a DVD. For the 2 dvd-only titles on this release schedule I would have preferred Persona 4-styled BDs as DVD for a modern show just feels wrong.

…If given the choice of dub-only DVD or sub-only BD I’d be in a bit of a bind.

I didn’t even buy Sentai’s release, so I certainly wouldn’t buy AoA’s release for it if it happened.

As for the DVD-only titles, chances are Dog & Scissors was probably a licensor call, since the final JP volume just got released Jan 14 2014.

Busou Shinki probably didn’t pull good enough stream numbers to warrant a BD.
Though I think that’s partially TBS’s fault (maybe partially Sentai’s as well) since that was one of the last TBS TAN exclusives in Fall 2012, before TBS started allowing CR simulcasts in Spring 2013.

I wanted to believe that the narrative of “streaming numbers determine how spiffy the physical release is…or if there will even be one” was just funi and Sentai trying to drum up business for their streams but now I’m not so sure.

There are many shows that I’ve bought but didn’t simulcast or stream in any way. Going by the streaming numbers doesn’t takw such into account. As there’s no way to know if people who simulcasted also bought I don’t see it as a very useful metric and certainly not as THE metric.

I’m going to.keep my fingers crossed that dubbed blurays of these titles eventually come out.

It’s not the only metric they use in determining the final outcome of a release, but it is a factor.
It does kinda make me wonder about Chunibyo though, if the TBS TAN exclusivity of it and the streaming numbers because of it, were the reason it was relegated to sub-only BD.

There’s also overseas acquisitions in other English speaking countries, which help with the dubbing costs on the shared licenses.

At the end of the day though, it’s a business decision in the direction of safety over perceived demand, so there’s not much we can do about it but whine or buy it anyways.
