009-1 / Zero Zero Nine One

If it helps I’m like almost postive this was never on the free TAN VOD. If it did air on TAN, it had to be the SVOD thing. I watched almost everything that TAN VOD had on around this time.[/quote]

Negative bro. Free VOD had a 1 ep taste test. I remember it

Yeah, free VOD had sneak previews. I know Comcast got more than 1 episode - I saw 2 or 3 for free on it.

Hmmm really? I must have totally missed that. Was it up there long? I think I’d remember a name like 009-1 lol. That really sticks out. Then again maybe they messed up and never uploaded it here. i got jipped of an episode of Red Garden by Comcast…so yah never know. Or I just didn’t notice it lol. But I could have SWORN this was never available for me.

lots of interest in Ishinomori lately. This is probably my LEAST favorite of his series to be honest, but it’s still DAMN GOOD. The manga is better, it’s more cold-warish spy stuff, and even more space stuff too.

The only relation between this work (009-1) and Cyborg 009 is that they were created by the same person. The stories only intersect once as far as I can tell, when Mylene wanders into a bar and has a drink and a conversation with Jet Link.

Both the recent remakes of these shows left me hungry though. They both appeared as almost teasers to the original story.

Alright kiddos, if you like this then you may also like Android Kikaider. He was working on them both around the same time in his life.

I’m bringing this thread back up to the top so we can discuss 009-1. Guess I’ll go first.

First, when I went to get the first disk out, I was pleasantly surprised. I had originally purchased the Funi S.A.V.E. version but then discovered the ADV box set with the tin attaché case was available so I bought that and returned the S.A.V.E. version. What I discovered with the ADV version is a booklet packed with each disk. It has introductions to the main characters of each episode and some background info on the production team. Very nice!

Watching the episodes, I got the feel that this was a very retro 60s or 70s style series. Even though it looks new (shot in widescreen, for example) it has the feel of an old spy movie (and a bit of a nod to Austin Powers, to boot!) I know that most reviewers liken it to the James Bond franchise, but I see it as more of a Matt Helm/Our Man Flint type of series. I discovered that the reason for the retro feel was that the original 009-1 manga was written between 1967 and 1970. That cleared up the reason for the feelings I had.

Now, on to the episodes:

Episode 1

[details=spoiler]We meet the team-Mylene Hoffman, AKA 009-1, the leader of the all female 9 Number Group of the Zero Zero Organization; Vanessa Ibert (009-3), the surveillance specialist; Berta Kastner (009-4), what could best be described as the weapons specialist and Mia Connery (009-7), the master (mistress?) of disguise. The difference is they did not come by these skills through training or experience, but through extensive cybernetic modifications, as this is an alternative world we are now in-one in which the Cold War is still raging after 140 years and the delicate balance of power is maintained using cybernetically modified humans. The 9 Number Group and their compatriots battle the Eastern Bloc operatives who still try to find the edge to give them the ability to dominate the world.

Their hopes, this time, are pinned on a Dr. Zond Soyuz, who discovered a theory to extract enormous amounts of energy from a heretofore unknown source. He tried to defect to the West to keep the theory from falling into the hands of those in the Eastern Bloc that would use it to turn the Cold War into a hot one. He is kidnapped, along with his monkey, by a group headed by Ivan Godnov and Ludmila Schindler who intend to get the theory from him by any means necessary.

Mylene and her team are called into action to rescue the doctor, but they need to locate him to be able to rescue him. Thanks to Vanessa’s surveillance work they learn that Ludimila has an eye for the ladies, so Mylene goes “undercover” at a brothel to learn where Dr. Soyuz was being held. The ladies stage an assault on the fortress location only to find that it is a trap. They escape the trap, thanks to stun grenades fired from launchers located in Berta’s knees! She also shoots a tracker beacon from her elbow onto the helicopter that spirits away the captive doctor and leads the team to a space shuttle launch pad. Mylene heads to the capsule, where she finds the doctor dead and the monkey sitting in his lap. Curious as to why the doctor kept the pet with him all the time she searches the animal and discovers it, too, has been cybernetically altered-this time, to function as a storage device for the doctor’s work. She recovers the monkey but the rocket she is in is launched by Godnov as a last dying step after being shot by Mia, who was disguised as an Easter Bloc soldier.

It was a good introduction to the world of 009-1, though the ending felt a bit contrived (Mylene parachutes out of the shuttle just before it blows up due to a bomb Godnov had planted in the rocket.) It made me want to continue on with the series, which the introduction should do.[/details]

I enjoyed the first four episodes.

Every Redshirt knows that creepy mansions are not to be taken lightly nor little girls. And how to not give a killing aura and kill someone? Simple, just give that person the redshirt for the day.

Episode 2

[details=spoiler]Why is it that every spy series has to have a “training simulation” open for one episode? That is one of the largest and lamest cliches in all of literature. Ian Fleming never had James Bond going through a simulation (although he had one of the bad guys run though one in From Russia With Love). Anyway, we find Mylene battling fling battle bots and defeating them all. There’s a twist, though, as the training is not for Mylene but for the creators and operators of the UAVs, who find out that they need to back to the drawing boards! Mylene’s boss, Number Zero, rewards her with Christmas off. She immediately heads for a bubble bath but before she can get too comfortable Number Zero calls her for an emergency! Hurrying to the Zero Zero Organization headquarters, she learns that a Zero Zero Organization agent was killed by a genetic mutant child and that a disposal squad has been dispatched to eliminate the mutant, as is required by law. Number Zero send Mylene to confirm the disposal for him.

Meanwhile, we learn how the Eastern Bloc handles the genetic mutant question. They don’t eliminate them, they experiment on them in a never-ending quest for the edge that will give them supremacy over the West. We see a load of “research material” being delivered to a research facility. When one of the subjects attempts to escape, he is shot down. The only complaint by the director of the research facility is that he has one less subject to study.

Mylene links up with the disposal squad, where she meets a particularly nasty specimen named Double Gomez. The disposal team kills the parents of the girl, but not before they help their daughter escape. The team pursues her, but once the get close to her they begin attacking each other, knocking each other unconscious. The girl used her power to reflect emotions to attack the team. When Mylene and Gomez come upon the unconscious soldiers, Gomez flies into a rage that the girl uses to force Gomez to shoot himself in the head. Mylene, however, is left untouched as she has no hatred or fear of the girl. She walks away, leaving the girl alive, and reflects on who is the real monster in this episode-the mutant who did not want and does not understands her power but uses it to defend herself or the men who hunted her out of blind hatred.

This episode opens up some interesting questions about how we treat those who are different than us. One side uses fear and repression in an attempt to eliminate what they perceive as a threat while the other side exploits the same people in an attempt to find an advantage to further their own schemes. Neither way is acceptable, but what can we do when we find ourselves in such a situation?[/details]

I’ll tackle the next two episodes tomorrow.

[details=spoiler]This is such a great anime. I love the music, especially the OP/ED and the whole sixty’s look. It’s a great spy / mystery story and I think Mylene could go up against James Bond any day. But I can see how you also get that Flint / Matt Helm feel too, Newshawk. Mylene has great abilities and gadgets, including her machine gun breasts. She may even be the original Fembot! I like how the story takes place towards the end of a 140 year old cold war when peace is in sight and yet the East and the West conduct the spy business as usual.

In the first episode, Mylene has some nice fighting moves. I wonder why no one noticed that the “solider” was wearing a pair of earrings – another nice gadget. It was a good introduction of characters and it seems that Mylene is not unique; other 009s are like her as well.

I didn’t think the beginning of episode two was just a training exercise. Mylene really looked like she was on a mission, but her real mission was on the unpleasant side. It seems the East gathers mutant children for research, but the West prefers to kill them. However, I wonder how these children came to be. Mylene is to observe the disposal of a mutant monster, but the monster turns out to be a terrified little girl. I’m glad Mylene let her go, but I wonder what will happen to her now that her parents are dead. I think Double Gomez liked his job a little too much, ordering the killing of the girl’s parents when he should have taken them into custody.

The cat and mouse game with the hitman in the third episode was very enjoyable. Mylene made Egg break his routine and use much more than just his usual one bullet. It was a very interesting game and showed off more of Mylene’s skills. She’s definitely one cool, level headed lady. She also seems a bit emotionless, but I think it’s just a cover.

I really enjoyed episode four the most so far with the haunted castle and a batman. It turned out to be a revenge plot, but the story of the Dr. and his Maria was sad too. He ends up destroying the castle and himself as well, so that he can be reunited with his dead fiancée and his final act of defiance was to destroy his research so that neither side could get their hands on it. His story showed just how ruthless the East and West can be when they want something. There’s also a hint of Mylene’s past and we learn that her cover name is Muse. It also seems her rival, Loki, might have a similar past to hers. A nice mystery here.[/details]

I have seen the next four. Good series. It has some good stories, though they do seem a tab predictable. Still good though.

Episodes 1 - 4

[details=spoiler]I also got the same 60’s/70’s vibe. The ED really reinforces it for me, too. It’s a nice piece of music. I think the series starts off well. It may be the downside to being a spy, but it seems to me that Mylene sure sleeps with a lot of dirt bags.

I also wondered about the earrings in episode 1. It didn’t seem very superspy-ish to me.

I thought episode 3 had the best ending line with Mylene saying, “at least you were hard-boiled in bed.” It really made me chuckle.[/details]

Episode 5 –

spoiler

Well, like Mylene says – she’s “just a magnet for trouble” – even while on vacation in Rome. Mylene picks up a girl in trouble and feels that she’s a little on the innocent side, referring to her as “pure”. Then she stumbles upon a fellow agent’s case. Little does she know the two are tied together. I love the Corvettes that the agents use – they really had some style to them back then, but I found it odd that Mylene had her code name – 009-1 – as a vanity plate. Way to advertise you’re a spy! Anyway, there’s an interesting showdown in the Coliseum when she finds out the girl she helped is really an android made of “pure” gold – an ingenious way of smuggling money into the East. Funny that the android also had machine gun breasts. Funny too that Mylene ended up tossing three coins into the Trevi Fountain. I don’t think Mylene will ever get an actual vacation – she always seems to be on the job!

Episode 6 –

[details=spoiler]Learned more about Dr. Green and the mutant children in the Eastern Bloc when an agent infiltrates the lab. Ironheart was Myelene’s mentor and more of Mylene’s past is revealed. He had always told her that composure and keeping emotions in check were a spy’s greatest asset. Yet, Ironheart loses both when he sees the children’s drawings at the lab. They were just so full of life and vivid colors, that they brought tears to his eyes. As an artist himself, his own work was lifeless because his enhanced hand can only copy to perfection, but nothing more. The children’s drawings affect him even more when Dr. Green tells him that they were the last ones the children would ever draw before “research” on them began. Dr. Green seems to have a heart as well or maybe he was also affected by Ironheart’s emotions. Instead of alerting security, he willingly gives Ironheart the drug that can create super soldiers and tells him to destroy it so that suffering can be prevented on both sides. I really don’t think Dr. Green likes his job very much.

After losing the very things that make an agent good, Ironheart quits the spy business and retires to a cabin in the woods to paint. Because of their relationship, Mylene is sent to bring him back in and turn over the intel he acquired in the lab. He tells her of the mission and about the children’s drawings. He also tells her he failed his mission because he got emotional. Mylene was sent to give him a choice. Either come back or be eliminated by voice activated explosive. She asks him to give her the drug, but then realizes that he’s already destroyed it. And by now the East has found him as well. Ironheart knows his time has come and saves Mylene one last time. It must have been really hard for her to give the password, “pop it” to activate the explosive Ironheart took with him to give her time to escape. When Mylene returns to the cabin afterwards, she looks at the last painting he was working on and finds it more vivid and more full of life than anything he had ever done prior to this. And back in the East, Dr. Green is forced to continue his research.

I thought the voice activated explosive was pretty cool, but this was a sad episode. The mutant children face a very unhappy fate in the East – perhaps the West has the better idea in killing them outright, although this is very wrong as well. People always tend to destroy or exploit what they fear instead of trying to understand it. And that is very sad. It must have been very hard on Mylene to kill the person that had taken her under his wing and helped her when she was a rookie. Her emotions must run very deep as well.[/details]

Episode 7 –

spoiler

Billy lives with his alcoholic grandpa, but is very wise and self-sufficient for his young years. The wife of a defector plays at being a mother for him, because she supposedly lost her own child. In reality, she is using Billy to pass intel back to the East. Once again, the method is ingenious. In memory of her little boy, she requests Billy to put toy ships out to sea. However, these toy ships contains information chips and are remote controlled once Billy puts them into the water. Mylene stops the operation and kills “Mary”. It turns out that the woman was paying Billy’s grandfather to do this and the grandfather took the money to give Billy a better future. Mylene lets Billy and his grandfather live, but did unintentionally destroy Billy’s trust in adults. It was sad to see Billy at the end crying with Toby and denouncing adults. However, I’m glad Mylene felt compassion and let them live. Any one else would have killed them both, I’m sure.

Episode 8 –

[details=spoiler]This was a very interesting episode that deals with Mylene’s concept of freedom. Mylene is sent after a double agent called Snake. Meanwhile, the higher ups in the Zero Zero Organization discuss Mylene and her future. They feel that she has superb skills, but that her emotions are starting to interfere with her missions and she may soon have to be removed from duty. But they also review her past, which was good to see and showed how Mylene became the person she is.

As a little girl, Mylene, her parents and her brother, Paul, were part of a group that was trying to defect to the West and find freedom. Mylene is confused as to what exactly freedom is though. The group had reached neutral ground at Area Z and made contact with a man that would lead them to the West, but they end up getting caught in a crossfire between East and West when fighting breaks out. Everyone makes a run for it, but Mylene sees her father and then her mother get shot. Her father’s dying words tell Mylene to reach freedom and then she loses her brother as well. A man named Nelson saves her and she finds out that he is a spy from the West. He takes her to the West and freedom, but cautions her to never become a spy.

Mylene ends up at an orphanage and longs for a different kind of freedom; however it will be her destiny to become a servant to the rich. But then a representative from the Zero Zero Organization shows up looking for volunteers to be agents. Without any hesitation whatsoever, Mylene volunteers and undergoes intensive physical and mental training that ends with an operation to make her a cyborg. She becomes one of the organization’s best agents, but the higher ups are still worried about her emotions.

Now, Mylene has to deal with this double agent, Snake, that turns out to be Nelson, the man that saved her and brought her to the West when she was a little girl. She finds out that he turned because he needs the money to get his dying girlfriend an expensive operation that will save her life. She also finds out that Nelson’s intel may have started the fight that caused her family to be killed. Mylene does struggle with her emotions and perhaps wavers momentarily, but knows where her duty lies and does her job, killing Nelson. Again, this must have been hard for her and only proves that an agent can’t have emotional ties of any kind. They higher ups are satisfied – for now. But Mylene is still questioning her father’s last words. Has she really found freedom? And why do I get a strong feeling that Loki might be her brother, Paul?[/details]

I finished the series tonight. Since I have the dvd’s I also got to watch the bonus episode.

spoiler

The bonus had a unique way of insinuating a certain action taking place. It reminded me of a scene from Naked Gun, so I wonder which came out first.

The last story arc was compelling and we got to see all the 009 agents at work. The story ends as if it was the beginning again.

spoiler

And since they didn’t find Loki’s body, did he live or was just ‘forgotten’. Or could be some other group picked him up? Good little plot twist at the end that might bring some hope to 009-1.

Episode 9 –

spoiler

It seems trouble finds Mylene again when she kills an Eastern agent and his twin brother takes revenge. I can see how the East would use Norman, but I can’t believe that Norman would use his own family that way. It seems his brother was more important to him. However, Norman is just a simple car salesman and is no match for Mylene. It’s unfortunate that she has to kill him, but she is also getting more emotional, crying as she leaves the scene.

Bonus Episode –

[details=spoiler]Mylene goes undercover to meet another double agent that also happens to be a jazz musician. Surprisingly, Sam doesn’t jump right into bed with her. But I think Sam already knows who she is. I like the cat, appropriately named Jazz in this episode too.

Mylene may be in over her head on this one when she really comes to care for Sam. They finally do sleep together and Mylene wakes up with a bomb inside her body. Or at least that’s what Sam tells her. He knew exactly who she was and what she’s capable of all along. Mylene finds out that the whole jazz band is made up of double agents and that Sam passes intel through his sheet music. But only enough information is exchanged to keep each side in balance and protect peace.

Sam tells Mylene that the network has already covered its tracks and that when the song hits a “sour” note, the bomb inside Mylene will blow up. But at the end of the song, Sam is the one that dies instead. Either he came to care for Mylene as well or figured that now that he’s been found out, even if he kills Mylene, they will still be after him. I found it odd that for such a big explosion, only Sam’s head neatly blew up, leaving his body and the apartment intact.

Mylene takes his death badly. She takes the remote from his dead hand and presses the button. I think she was hoping that Sam did put a bomb inside of her and she could die as well. She really did get too emotionally involved in this one and when she breaks down, she finally reveals her humanity. And the band/spy network did accomplish something between the East and the West as well.[/details]

Episode 10 –

[details=spoiler]Mylene manages to get undercover as one of Dr. Green’s assistants at the facility and takes over Ironheart’s last mission. The West is starting to think that the East has the right idea with regards to the mutant children and Zero tells Mylene their methods may be more humane which angers her.

Mylene gets to work in the children’s ward and befriends one of the children, a little boy named Victor. He tells her that Dr. Green told them that they were going to the moon where they would have freedom and Mylene feels bad because she knows what their true fate will be. Victor reads her mind and tells Mylene that he knows she wants to find her freedom too.

In taking a file to Dr. Green in the lab, she is confronted with the same scene that Ironheart saw and recognizes it immediately when she sees the children’s drawings. Dr. Green knows that they facility and all evidence is scheduled to be destroyed and that a Western spy has infiltrated them.

There is an explosion on the moon. It turns out that although there is an arms agreement, both sides have stockpiled weapons and hidden them away. But since both sides were attacked, it is thought to be the work of terrorists. Both East and West receive a demand and are told about a Reverse Explosion weapon. But the notes are written in crayon and can’t really be taken too seriously, although they are eventually. Meanwhile, Vanessa Ibert (009-3) investigates a couple of mysterious children in the Amazon.

Back at the facility, the children know about the attack before it happens. The soldiers arrive and order the staff to leave the “test subjects” and exit the building, but Mylene can’t bear to leave the children. Once again, she is showing compassion during a mission.[/details]

Episode 11 –

[details=spoiler]Mylene is told that if she doesn’t leave the building, she will be killed along with the children, but it seems the children have a plan and Victor takes Mylene with them. The soldiers find an empty facility devoid of any “test subjects”. The children take Mylene to an underground passageway and Dr. Green is there, waiting for them. He leads them through a tunnel and Mylene finds out about Dr. Green and his change of heart. She also discovers that Dr. Green was the one that gave the drug to Ironheart.

The group makes it to the woods, but is quickly found by some soldiers and Mylene blows her cover to save them. Loki shows up to help her, but she tells him to escape as well. While Mylene deals with the soldiers, everyone else makes it to the helicopter and gets away, although Dr. Green is reluctant to leave Mylene behind. The facility is destroyed and Mylene gets caught.

The West still thinks the East is behind the initial threat, while the East thinks it’s the West. In any case, both sides know this could be the start of an all out war. Mylene is tortured while in the Amazon, Vanessa dreams of a tribal massacre of natives that resemble the mysterious children. She later finds out that everyone there also had the same dream and that this shared dreaming happens often. She thinks that it may be more than just a dream, but in fact an actual past event.

The deadline hits and more explosions take place, but now you can see that those native children have something to do with it. Mylene escapes, but has been branded a traitor by the organization for supposedly exchanging intel with the East. Vanessa connects the dreams to the two native children and Mylene connects the children to the explosions. She finds out that Dr. Green and the mutant children have gone to the moon and intends to follow them, although Zero orders her to return home. Making her decision, she tosses her earrings away and is now considered rogue.[/details]

Episode 12 –

[details=spoiler]Zero agents stationed around the world are searching for information on the Reverse Explosion weapon, but all they can come up with is a connection to the moon. Mylene reaches the moon and begins a search for Dr. Green and the children. She finds Loki and asks him to take her to Dr. Green since he owes her a favor. On the way, Loki tells her what the Reverse Explosion weapon really is – a network of the children’s telepathy.

They reach the hideout to find that it’s already been infiltrated. Dr. Green is being interrogated as to the whereabouts of the Reverse Explosion device, but he tells them nothing. Loki and Mylene try to rescue him, but Dr. Green gets shot anyway. Before he dies, he tells Loki to free the children, but Loki intends to use them instead. It turns out that the hideout is also a secret Eastern nuclear missile base and Loki intends to start a nuclear war.

Loki tells Mylene that once the Earth is cleansed, the children will become the new human race and that there will be no more East or West which is for the best. But Mylene needs to stop him. They fight and each realizes the other is a cyborg. As they continue fighting, Loki tells Mylene of his family and Mylene realizes the story is the same as her own and that this man is her brother, Paul. But he’s taking revenge on the world for the loss of his family and has to be stopped.

Meanwhile, more soldiers have arrived and planted bombs throughout the base. As they go off, the explosions knock Mylene and Loki off their feet, but Loki gets up, determined to “change the world” and gets shot in the back. Mylene calls him by his real name, realizing that she’s about to lose her brother all over again after just finding him. They are able to exchange a few words, before some of the ceiling caves in, blocking him from view. Mylene must think he’s dead, but he survived such a thing before and I hope he does this time too. Mylene manages to escape, but as she watches the sun rise over the moon’s surface, she cries.

Mylene returns to the Zero organization and reports that the Reverse Explosion device was destroyed along with a radical agent on the moon, but I get the impression that Zero knows differently. Mylene will be punished for her rogue actions, but she still has a job. She also finds out that Loki may still be alive, since only Dr. Green’s body was found and there was no trace of any “radical” agent. Zero asks what she might know of this agent and Mylene says “nothing and that’s a good thing” but I think Zero has some doubt she’s telling the truth.

At night, Mylene looks up at the moon and thinks about the rest of what happened there after she escaped from the hideout. Loki must have told her where the children were before he supposedly died, because Mylene is with them, telling them that she can’t stay with them, since she hasn’t found her own freedom yet. She gives them some advice and promises Victor that she’ll see him again someday. Back on Earth, her memory of this is interrupted by another assignment and life goes on.

This was a very exciting and enjoyable series for me and although it ended well, I would have liked to see a few more episodes to see how the children do and if Mylene gets to see Victor again. I’d also like to see if she ever reunites with her brother and if they can find peace between them. I wonder how her emotions will affect future missions and her place within the Zero organization, but most of all, I’d like to know if Mylene ever finds her freedom. This is a great show with a really good story and I think many would enjoy watching it.[/details]

I’m actually a day behind. I left my DVDs at home on Monday, but I have been watching it while I work out. I’ll be watching the last 4 episodes tonight.

So far, I have a few thoughts:

[details=spoiler]At first, I didn’t think I would like the “old school” designs, but they grew on me rather quickly. I also have to say that the dub is rock solid. ADV did an impressive job on this one. The lead is absolutely perfect!

Was anyone else wondering why 009-1 had to sleep with so many of her hits before she killed them? LOL [/details]

I suppose either or…lol

So I put in the third disc and guess what? It plays fine, then starts skipping about 10 minutes into the first episode on the disc. I check the disc to see if its dirty and while there were no smudges, the bottom of the disc looked. It looked like there was a faint line in the back of the disc and a wavy area. Apparently I got a defective disc.

My second disc also skipped at part of one episode, but it was easy to forward through. The third disc actually shuts down and says “unreadable disc”. Oh well, it figures this would be my first truly defective disc…lol. I guess I will have to contact Right Stuf and see if they can replace it.

It’s not as bad as buying a boxset and finding out only a few episodes work. DVDs are the devil sometimes.

I saw this series and really enjoyed the action.

I couldn’t help but think of the Julia Roberts film “Sleeping with the Enemy” with the bedroom scenes primarily the one with the sniper in Episode 3 Hard Boiled
