Notes:
(1) MaouSadao , I taped FLCL Progressive, but haven’t watched it yet, so it looks like I’m in for a double dose this Saturday night. It’ll take a while to digest, and I’m not sure I’ll have anything I think is worth saying (as opposed to actually worth saying)…but if so, I’ll probably say it;
(2) Something’s gone wonky with the schedule for 5/3 (now moot) and 5/10: only two episodes are displayed for each week, one from Gugure! Kokkuri-san and one from Humanity Has Declined. It’s a minor glitch, but still…
(3) Hmpf! Looks like I’ve been living in a bit of a fool’s paradise (yes, yes, insert reflexive self-deprecating remark here), feeling a rosy sense of security that if the FVOD schedule got any sparser, I could always supplement it with a show or two from HDIVE–only to discover that HDIVE has gone totally pay-for-play. (I’m always the last to know.) At first I was tempted to bite the bullet and pay the sixty bucks, but the fact that I was only just now discovering the change told me how little I’ve been using it. I think I’m probably better off spending the money on DVDs. Still, it’s annoying;
(4) No one was interested in the last trivia question, so it’s time to tie off that hanging thread. The challenge was to identify the reference I made in my post of April 29th. The relevant line was

From my parents’–now my–collection of vintage sf paperbacks, Robert Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land. As just a throwaway detail of his worldbuilding, Heinlein introduces the notion of a Fair Witness. To set the scene, Jill is at the estate of Jubal (Heinlein’s typical cranky old man in that particular book). They’re talking by the swimming pool, and Jubal discovers that Jill doesn’t really know what a Fair Witness is. Since he just so happens to employ one…
(Jubal:) “So? ANNE!”
Anne was on the springboard; she turned her head. Jubal called out, “That house on the hilltop–can you see what color they’ve painted it?”
Anne looked, then answered, “It’s white on this side.”
(Jubal:) “You see? It doesn’t occur to Anne to infer that the other side is white, too. All the King’s horses couldn’t force her to commit herself…unless she went there and looked–and even then she wouldn’t assume that it stayed white after she left.”
The idea is that a Fair Witness can be trusted because they will testify only as to they reliably know, without including undue or unwarranted assumptions that go beyond what they themselves have directly witnessed–let alone any opinions.
Of course, Anne is making some commonplace epistemological assumptions, and presumably so do the other Fair Witnesses. For example, that no Descartes-type extraordinary circumstances are in play: that they’re not being deceived by a demon, that they’re not in the Matrix or a brain-in-a-vat, that they’re not in the thrall of a telepathic alien from Star Trek TOS’s “The Menagerie”, or on Next Gen’s holodeck, that the universe wasn’t created–complete with false memories and evidence of the past–five minutes ago, etc., etc., etc. Or even, more mundanely, that no one is committing an elaborate hoax with a cleverly-painted image of a house on a huge flat. Otherwise, she’d have to say something more like, “I seem to be seeing what appears to be one side of a white house that I seem to remember was there being painted on what I seem to remember was yesterday…”

@Jababbi, I can’t wait for episode 2 of FLCL Progressive! Not going to ruin it until you see it. I hope AN or HiDive can run the uncut versions in tge future. Just wait for FLCL Alternative (season 3) airing in September.
Nice idea, but that’s a completely separate thing.
Besides, the names on the provider lists on this site have been out of order for months now, not just in the past four weeks like the DirecTV schedule.
Admin has been working on it, but for some reason, can’t get it resolved.
Either that or 5/17 appeared between when you first looked and when I did. You tend to check very early. I tend to look very late afternoon or early evening.
