Death Parade

Episode 8 –

Spoiler

Seems like this is another of Nona’s little “tests”. A murderer walks into a bar…………

A detective and a young man with a bloodied knife in his bag end up playing a weird game of air hockey. As they play, their memories begin to return. The young man, Shimada, remembers his younger sister, while the detective, Tatsumi, remembers coming home one evening to find his wife murdered. As Tatsumi remembers more, his playing gets more aggressive. Then Shimada remembers coming home one night to find his sister had been assaulted.

The assistant asks to see the memories and Decim says that he will ask for permission. In the meantime, both men want out of the bar more than ever. With some important memories still buried, Decim ups the ante for the men. Much like the dart game in the first episode, the pucks are now linked to the men’s organs. Before the game continues, both men cite why they need to get out of there – both are seeking revenge. Little do they know that they can never leave! After the credits, the assistant receives the memories. It turns out that both men are killers!

Spoiler

The game continues. The pain the men feel brings up more memories. Shimada murdered his sister’s stalker, which explains the knife that he found in his bag. He shows Tatsumi the knife and tells him that he already got his revenge and killed one man that hurt his sister. However, there were two men and now Shimada wants to get the other one. Tatsumi also remembers killing the man that murdered his wife.

Shimada doesn’t want to play the air hockey game anymore, until Tatsumi convinces him to keep playing, so he can get out and get his revenge on the other man that assaulted his sister. The game gets even more aggressive and Tatsumi remembers finding the body of the man that Shimada killed. But that is also where he died. The complete story finally comes together.

While Tatsumi was investigating the murdered man and the crimes he committed, Shimada mistakenly killed who he thought was the second man. That man was Tatsumi. But in reality, Shimada killed the right man anyway. While investigating the criminal, Tatsumi was the one that watched Shimada’s sister get assaulted. It seems that with the murder of his wife, Tatsumi went a little mad. In watching Shimada’s sister get assaulted, he had an excuse to kill the criminal and that was why he was in the killer’s apartment.

Shimada rages at Tatsumi for not saving his sister. Tatsumi fancies himself somewhat like Decim – an arbiter of sorts. One that judges the guilty. As the assistant tries to stop him, Decim will allow Shimada to kill Tatsumi – again. He claims it’s to help him make an accurate judgment, but the assistant begs Decim not to let it happen. Tatsumi is held by the threads and the knife is returned to Shimada as Decim explains that the dead cannot be killed again, but pain can be inflicted. The pucks with Tatsumi’s organs from the air hockey game are piled up in front of Shimada.

As Shimada reaches for the knife, the assistant steps in and begs them to stop. The assistant talks to Decim and the things she says makes him doubt himself. Shimada still wants his revenge and the assistant physically restrains him until she can talk him out of his anger. But once he calms down, Tatsumi manages to enrage Shimada again until he strikes the pucks with the knife. After the credits, it seems that Shimada has gone mad and the assistant attacks Decim again. He will just never understand what being human is. And it looks like both men get the bad ending since only the hell mask is shown at the end. This was another emotional episode, but I am left with one question – in all of this, how exactly did Shimada die?

Spoiler

Decim visits Nona and questions his job. He tells her that he respects the dead and cannot judge them. However, it has been his job to judge the assistant and he hasn’t been able to do that either. Nona suggests she takes over, but Decim declines. He will judge the assistant before her “term” is over. And it looks like the assistant is beginning to decay. But her memories were erased and Decim declines any help in that area. Nona doubts that Decim can find the darkness within her soul.

Decim explains the situation to a distraught assistant. She has come to realize that she is human. Decim tells her that if he doesn’t judge her soon, she shall become a dummy. However, Decim isn’t sure how he will do that yet. In the meantime, their next guest is a little old lady, and the game shall be “Old Maid” with her and the assistant. Decim will be playing this time as well.

The cards contain odd designs and the old lady sees one of her own creations on them and tells the others that she is an illustrator. Decim tells them that the designs actually relate to their lives. The old lady introduces herself as Sachiko and the assistant suggests they start the game. When the assistant picks the joker card, it has a pair of ice skates on it, and her eyes widen.

There are flashbacks of Decim sharing his doubts with Ginti, and Nona asking Quinn for the memories of the assistant. Sachiko receives another card with one of her designs, but she has an odd reaction to it - she hadn’t drawn it yet. Anyway, Sachiko is out of the game and guesses that she has died. Decim confirms it and tells her that she is there for judgment. The assistant thinks Sachiko is taking things rather calmly. She tells them that she isn’t too concerned because she has lived a full life. That seems to puzzle the assistant as well.

The game continues. Elsewhere, Quinn has found the memories and Nona makes a strange request. Once again, the assistant gets another odd card. It’s the little girl from the storybook. She pairs it with the little boy and tosses it down. Sachiko says she recognizes them. It was not one of her works, but she tells Decim and the assistant the story. Afterwards, the assistant has a memory from her childhood that involves the book. And with that, the assistant remembers that her name is Chiyuki! She cries as she remembers her mother.

But the game must go on and with Decim’s next pick, he is out of cards, and Chiyuki is left with the joker card that features the ice skates. The game is officially over and Sachiko is escorted to the elevator to be reincarnated. Chiyuki stays behind. It seems that Decim still can’t judge her.

The elevator operator is called to Oculus and Oculus takes his memories! He now knows that Decim has human emotions, given to him by Nona. The elevator operator is dismissed and has no idea what happened. I don’t think Oculus is too happy at the moment. And now, Decim is sharing his doubts with Chiyuki. He asks her to tell him her memories. Chiyuki is still decaying and is surprised by Decim’s request.

Spoiler

Ginti is up to his tricks again. It seems he’s given Mayu the choice to save Harada, who has already been thrown into the void. If another soul is exchanged for his, he can be saved. Mayu is already considering herself, until she hears what the void is. Ginti gives her another suggestion and shows her the picture of another man. He tells her to make a choice.

Decim needs to understand Chiyuki’s past and so, she skates for him. This is interesting – when Chiyuki first arrived at the bar, she already knew she was dead, but just didn’t remember how it happened. More memories come back to Chiyuki now as she remembers the little girl skating in the picture book and her mother taking Chiyuki to skating shows.

Decim has prepared a rink for her as well as music and off she glides. She performs a beautiful routine as she remembers her first attempts at skating and her mother’s encouragement. Decim has even given Chiyuki an applauding audience! She smiles as she skates, remembering more of her childhood and eventually growing up in the world of skating competitions.

As Chiyuki continues the routine, more of her adult memories come back to her as well. Another competition, but this time, there’s a bad fall, resulting in a knee injury. It looks like she will never skate again. This memory makes her fall here and now too. Everyone around her – family and friends – supported and encouraged her, but Chiyuki just went numb. Skating was everything to her.

Back at home, she sits in a dark room with a bandage on her knee, staring at her trophies. As her life became more and more unraveled, she committed suicide. Decim shares his confusion with her, saying that he would like to know her better. It also seems that he’s made his judgment as he makes Chiyuki her last drink. But the drink is drugged and Chiyuki falls asleep.

Meanwhile, Ginti has tricked Mayu and sends both her and Harada to the void after he questions her about life. Mayu realizes too late that Ginti lied to her. She and Harada turn into dummies, but it was kind of sweet at the end to see the dummies still holding hands.

In the end, Decim calls Quin for some memories and Oculus confronts Nona, telling her that she’s been a bad girl. Things seems to be coming to a head!

Spoiler

Decim receives Chiyuki’s memories. Nona takes a stand on behalf of the arbiters and human emotions, but Oculus is against it. However, he will let her have her way and see the truth for herself. Decim takes the sleeping Chiyuki into the elevator and instructs Clavis to take them to the lowest level.

Chiyuki awakens to her mother’s voice calling for her and finds herself in her own room, in her own house. Impossible! Then she sees her decaying self and knows nothing has really changed. Decim enters and tells her that it’s been three months since her death. After a chat, they go downstairs. The house is empty, but Chiyuki fills it with her happy memories.

As Chiyuki sees her own shrine, her mom comes home. Decim tells her that they cannot be seen or heard. Nor can they make any type of contact with the living. Chiyuki wonders why he’s doing this to her. Then he gives her the game controller. He tells her that if she presses the button, she can be brought back to life. However, the price is another life, and her memories of everything that happened after her death will be erased. Just press the button to live again. The choice is her to make, but she must decide quickly.

Chiyuki watches her mom take care of her shrine and cry, saying that she failed as a mother. Seeing how upset her mother is and how much she misses her daughter, Chiyuki is almost ready to accept Decim’s terms and take her life back. She struggles with her decision and almost presses the button, but something stops her. It’s the memories and regrets of the people that came to the bar to be judged. Chiyuki lets the controller drop to the ground, telling Decim that she can’t do it.

Decim doesn’t understand. With tears in her eyes, she tries to explain that it’s wrong and why. With a jolt, it looks like Decim is finally getting it. He clutches the place where his heart should be. As he deals with these emotions, Chiyuki cries out for her mother, apologizing over and over again. When she looks up, she sees her mom crying over the doll that she had made Chiyuki from the picture book. This only makes Chiyuki cry harder.

Decim looks like he’s about to have a heart attack. Chiyuki grabs the controller and shoves it at Decim, telling him to press the button. Now Decim is crying as the world cracks around them. I think Nona has succeeded! Decim’s eyes change as he apologizes to Chiyuki. He screams and the world around them falls apart. Apparently it was all an illusion. Decim admits as much to Chiyuki and apologizes to her again. Chiyuki wants to know why he did it and wonders if it was part of her judgment. It was, but Decim feels nothing but sorrow as he continues to cry.

He keeps apologizing even as Chiyuki goes over to hug him, telling him to stop. Decim just keeps on crying as he hugs her back. Nona and Oculus are watching! Nona then explains why she’s done all this. Oculus is still against her and Nona tells him that he’s wrong as she walks away from him. It seems that Decim has calmed down. As he and Chiyuki walk through a field of dummies, he tells her that this is a disposal ground for the dummies once the souls are removed. Chiyuki guesses that she will also end up there, but Decim says that she won’t. I see Decim has the dolls in his vest pockets.

They return to Clavis and the elevator. Back at the bar, Decim walks Chiyuki to the elevator and asks her a final question about being alive. Her answer pleases him and he hopes that because of this, he will be a better arbiter in the future. Chiyuki makes a suggestion that he should smile more, but his first attempt doesn’t quite work. She bids him goodbye as the doors close and Decim thinks of her, remembering her time as his assistant. Just before the doors close completely, Decim smiles and with tears in her eyes, Chiyuki smiles in return. She will be reincarnated.

Others wonder what will happen with the arbiters now. I think Ginti could use some of those emotions! And it looks as if he keeps his own collection of souls that he’s met. Nona begins to recite the rules and Oculus finishes them. Meanwhile, new guests arrive at the bar and are greeted by a smiling Decim. And the Chiyuki dummy sits on a chair forever watching, along with the rest of Decim’s collection and Chiyuki is holding her dolls from the picture book. I’m afraid that I am going to have to add this anime on my ever growing favorites list. I don’t think I could have liked it more!

Just finished this one tonight.

The first episode is fairly harsh, no way around that, but it turns into a very emotional story. The endings of the last two episodes are exceptionally sadly sweet!

Definitely recommend this show, but please. Don’t take the first episode at face value.

The OP is just awesome, and Nona is so cute!
