Makoto tells Nitta that she is the only one compatible with Lugh, and that there is no chance of survival. Nitta is assured that if she sacrifices herself, everyone else will be saved. Makoto advises her to rest until she is called the following day, but after Makoto leaves, Nitta breaks into tears. Hibiki had told her that if they could hold out two more days, the war would be over, but Alcor had an odd look on his face at that. I wonder if he already knows that Nitta is to be a sacrifice.

Alcor visits Hotsuin and asks him if he’s really okay with summoning Lugh to fight Mizar. But not so much that as the fact that Nitta will die. Hotsuin questions why Alcor is so concerned, and Alcor finds it strange as well to have such feelings. I find it odd that Hotsuin tells Alcor to abandon his emotions when it seems that Alcor is the more human one here at the moment. Hotsuin really has no emotions himself. To him, Nitta is just a tool to be used and discarded once broken.

Mizar has appeared and Nitta is summoned. At the command center, Hibiki wonders where Nitta is and why she isn’t with them. Hotsuin arrives and tells them that all is going to plan and Nitta appears on the screen before them, hooked up to some kind of machine. Hibiki soon realizes that Nitta is to be a sacrifice and Makoto confirms it. Hibiki and the other Summoners put up a protest, but Hotsuin shuts them down and Hibiki is left to rage in silence. Hotsuin gives the order to summon Lugh.

Nitta appears and floats over the city as Hibiki and Daichi receive her dead face clip. Daichi screams and drops his phone, but Hibiki takes matters into his own hands and runs off. The demon, Lugh, appears now and Hotsuin takes control. He has Lugh release the Ryumyaku dragon, Shakko, and everyone soon finds out that it’s a one-shot deal. If it doesn’t stop Mizar here and now, that’s it, and Nitta would have died for nothing. And Hibiki and Byakko are on their way.

Shakko seems to have been successful in devouring the replicating Mizar, just as Nitta’s mind collapses and she is completely taken over by Lugh. Hibiki arrives on the scene and Lugh attacks him. It seems that Hibiki being there was planned as well, because Hotsuin now orders him to kill Lugh. Hibiki breaks down, for how can he kill something that looks like Nitta? But for all intents and purposes, Nitta is already gone.

Now that they’ve unleashed the demon, there is no way to contain it. Hotsuin talks to Lugh and tells him that Nitta’s body can’t sustain him for very long, but Lugh is certain that the few minutes he has will be enough to teach Hotsuin a lesson for imprisoning a god. Meanwhile, Daichi goes after Hotsuin, but may lose his life too, in the process. Luckily, Lugh is approaching and Hotsuin releases Daichi.

The lower Summoners are assembled and are destroyed in a mere second. Lugh then targets the Diet Building, but Hibiki gets there just in time. He tries to connect to Nitta, but Lugh tells him that the “girl’s spirit is returned to the Void” and her body will soon be lost as well. Lugh attacks Hibiki and he is knocked from the roof, although Hotsuin grabs his hand at the last possible moment. Hotsuin asks why Hibiki hesitated. Duh. Hotsuin calls upon his Baal to destroy Lugh and lets Hibiki go as he calls for Sazuku to stop Baal. As he falls, Byakko saves him just in time – I was scared there for a second.

When Sazuku is defeated, Hibiki sends Byakko up against Baal next and both are destroyed. Hotsuin grabs Hibiki and calls him an idiot for trying to save a Nitta that is already dead. However, Hibiki says that he will protect her. The observing Lugh says that humans are foolish and begins to dissipate. That leaves him just enough time to “judge” Hotsuin. Calling forth a spear of light, Lugh aims it at Hotsuin, but Hibiki pushes him out of the way and takes it himself. He really doesn’t want anyone else to die, does he? Somehow, Hibiki is holding back the destruction with just his physical form. Amazing!

With the Ryumyaku power building, it seems that the dragon, Shakko has chosen Hibiki! Hotsuin finds it “interesting” and the watching Alcor is surprised that Hibiki has the “same qualities” as Hotsuin. Hotsuin says that their karma is the same and that Hibiki will “guide the world”. He tells Hibiki to take his hand, but Hibiki is a little busy at the moment. He does manage to push Hotsuin back and tells him that he will use his power to protest everyone. That definitely goes against Hotsuin’s master plan!

Command soon realizes that Hibiki won’t be able to handle the still flowing Ryumyaku power, but they can’t seal it either. Hibiki himself floats off the ground towards Nitta, saying that he won’t give up although Lugh tells him that it’s impossible. Hibiki says that he won’t let it be impossible and that he is certain that Nitta is still there somewhere. Lugh screams and sends more power against Hibiki, but Hibiki appeals to Nitta not to choose death. A crying Nitta tells Hibiki that she must do what she can and Hibiki tells her that he will not accept her answer of death.

Nitta cannot keep pretending that she is as strong as everyone else and continues to keep her feelings hidden. She misses her parents too and Hibiki tells her that it’s okay to be weak and that everyone has weakness. That is why they are all there for one another, to rely on one another in times of weakness. He tells Nitta that she and the others are his strength, but Nitta is positive that Hibiki doesn’t need her. He says that he doesn’t want to lose her and that he will help her. Calling her by her first name, he tells her that they should survive together and she finally takes his outstretched hand. This pushes Lugh from her body and he disappears as the power is broken.

Hibiki embraces Nitta as she asks him if it’s okay for her to live and Hibiki tells her that he will never let her choose death. Nitta cries again as she admits that she wants to live, but Hibiki already knows that and tells her not to worry. Hotsuin just smiles and calls it a miracle. I know that he will have further use for both Hibiki and Nitta, but I’m sure he also realizes that Hibiki is his enemy - and a very powerful one at that!

Hibiki is unconscious. Saving Nitta was just too much for him and it took a toll. However, Nitta seems fine and Lugh has been added to her app. She seems a little guilty about the situation too.

Alcor is in Hibiki’s room and knows that Hibiki isn’t coming back. He receives a visit from two other demons and they wonder how long Alcor is going to play with the humans. Alcor admits that he likes the humans, but the other two don’t understand. One of the demons tries to attack Alcor, but with a flick of his finger, Alcor knocks the demon to the floor. A few more flicks and the demon disappears. Alcor then asks the other demon if he has any concerns and is assured that he doesn’t before disappearing as well. Alcor visits Hibiki and tells him that he must go observe the world’s fate that he has wrought.

Finally, it’s the seventh day. Hibiki is still out but the Summoners gather and take the chance to get to know one another a bit more. They’ve really become friends throughout all this and finally get to exchange e-mails. But as they do that, a dead face clip is announced and it’s all of them! They all seem to die in some kind of explosion. Before they can even think about it, an alarm goes off. The last Septentrion has arrived!

The Septentrion, Bene Tnasch, has all the abilities of the prior ones put together and with one strike, Sapporo is gone. Bene Tnasch is targeting the JP’s branches and Osaka disappears next. The Summoners arrive at command and Makoto is informed about the dead face clips. However, Airi says they can beat them. Nagoya is the next branch to go silent. Hotsuin orders the “gifted ones” to go out. Hinako says that they choose to go and not because Hotsuin ordered it. Hotsuin is going out as well – to destroy God!

Meanwhile, Hibiki is dreaming of his childhood and his friendship with Daichi. But I don’t think Hibiki’s parents ever approved of Daichi. Hibiki wakes up crying. Bene Tnasch arrives over the Tokyo branch and the Diet Building is destroyed. Ryumyaku is diverted to Hotsuin and he attacks Bene Tnasch, immobilizing it, so the other can attack as well. But even their combined strength is no match as the Seventh takes another form and a piece breaks off. It emits a high frequency, and the summoned demons are suddenly gone. Kanno decides to fight frequency with frequency and orders her demon to neutralize the wave. Trumpeter does so, but a new dead face clip is announced and it’s Kanno!

Makoto tells her friend to get away, but it’s too late and Kanno is killed. The Summoners can do nothing while their demons are healing and Hotsuin looks like he’s weakening as well while Bene Tnasch continues to attack him. Hotsuin is determined not to be beaten – “no matter the sacrifice”! The Summoners get split up and another piece of the Seventh follows Airi. Jungo tries to save her, but I think they die as well in the explosion.

Another piece of Bene Tnasch has found Makoto, Nitta, Daichi, and Hinako. Hinako is lost in the following explosion. Her final request is for Daichi to protect Nitta. The piece attacks again and Makoto tells Daichi and Nitta to run and not to stop, but the three of them are soon trapped. Another explosion and Suzaku appears from nowhere and saves them. Byakko attacks the piece and destroys it. So, that must mean……

Hibiki is there! But he doesn’t know what’s going on. He asks for the others and is told that they were lost. Hibiki loses it at that point and attacks without thinking. Byakko is lost and a part of Bene Tnasch falls on Hotsuin. Hibiki uses his own power to fend off Bene Tnasch, but blames Hotsuin for abandoning his comrades. Hotsuin used his own power to protect himself and is fine. Hotsuin calls the others “nuisances” and that really offends Hibiki.

Hotsuin reminds Hibiki that he once told him that there was no room for mercy, but Hibiki says that’s no way to survive. Again, Hotsuin says that he will create a new world order with the power of Polaris and Hibiki argues against it, especially with Hotsuin in charge. Hibiki doesn’t understand and doesn’t want any future that Hotsuin has built on the death of his friends. So, Hotsuin asks Hibiki what he does want and Hibiki says that he wants to “fix” things – that he likes the world as it is. He says that they should change things by human hands.

While Hibiki and Hotsuin argue, the pieces of Bene Tnasch come together. While Hotsuin tells Hibiki that there is no hope for the weak, Bene Tnasch begins to power up. Hotsuin says that he wanted Hibiki to follow him and now that’s unfortunate that he won’t. Just then, Bene Tnasch attacks, and in the ensuing explosion, it looks as if both Hibiki and Hotsuin will be lost. The others are somewhat protected and Daichi laments that he is powerless to help his friends.

Hibiki and Hotsuin are using their power against the blast, but how long can they last? Suddenly another demon comes from nowhere and stops Bene Tnasch. It’s Daichi and it seems that he’s finally found his strength! Makoto notes that he has summoned Jack Frost, a demon even more powerful than Baal or Pallas Athena. Way to go Daichi! He has Jack Frost attack the Seventh and with Hibiki’s help, stops Bene Tnasch. Hotsuin delivers the final blow, destroying it. Well, they proved that hope is alive and well, but what happens now?

Humanity has won, but Hibiki won’t let Hotsuin go. Hotsuin tells Hibiki to kill him or stay out of his way. By the same token, Hotsuin promises Hibiki that he will kill him if he tries to interfere. Alcor floats down from above and says that he will not allow Hotsuin to kill Hibiki. And I am left hanging again!

spoiler

Alcor will not allow Hotsuin to kill Hibiki. He also announces an end to the trial of Polaris and that they have succeeded. But Hotsuin says that Alcor has no reason to be there. It’s true, but Alcor says that he now begins an attack “of his own will”. Hotsuin notes that a Septentrion should not be talking that way and Alcor tells him that his new found will did not come from Polaris. Alcor wishes to kill Hotsuin and leave the hope to Hibiki. Hibiki didn’t seem too happy about that. Hotsuin agrees to the fight.

As Alcor and Hotsuin fight, Hibiki tells Daichi and Nitta what Hotsuin has planned for the world. He tells them that Hotsuin must be stopped, but he collapses. The fight continues around Tokyo Tower and Alcor notes that Hotsuin’s power increases as they get closer to the tower. Hotsuin promises to teach Alcor about death, but Alcor still intends to kill Hotsuin first.

Alcor wishes to entrust Hibiki with the future because he changed him. Hibiki was the first one to treat Alcor as a person and not a machine. Hotsuin tells Alcor that he must be broken. And Alcor tells Hotsuin that he must be broken as well, for he has been interested in Hibiki all this time, but Hotsuin assures him that his plans haven’t changed and that Hibiki is only a tool to him. Alcor likens him to Polaris and Hotsuin says that he should just stop trying to think. He still wants to take Alcor to the future that he will make, but Alcor tells him that it will be an unhappy future without choice.

Funny that they both receive the other’s dead face clip. Hibiki also receives it. Against his friends’ wishes, Hibiki wants to stop Hotsuin, telling them of the promise he made. Makoto is there too and she vows to help Hotsuin. She’s sorry for all that she put them through, but her place is with Hotsuin. Nitta realizes that she loves him and Makoto won’t deny it. Hotsuin saved her when she needed it the most and for that alone, she will protect the future that he wants. The three friends receive Makoto’s dead face clip, but she tells them that it can be avoided. Somehow I think she’s wrong in this case. Makoto says that she has no regrets and asks them to take care of Hotsuin. She tells Hibiki that he just doesn’t understand and flies off with her Pallas Athena.

Hotsuin is getting tired. Alcor reminds him that there are limits to the human body. Hotsuin calls forth his Cerberus, but he’s no match for Alcor and is quickly dispatched. Hotsuin intends to call upon another demon, but Alcor won’t allow that and attacks him instead. Alcor wounds Hotsuin in the leg and before he can do more damage, Makoto appears. Pallas Athena attacks Alcor and is immediately defeated. Makoto throws herself in front of Hotsuin and is fatally wounded. She stays alive long enough to tell Hotsuin that he was her reason for living and thanks him before dying. Hotsuin calls her a fool, but did he feel anything for her? I wonder.

Makoto’s sacrifice gave Hotsuin enough time to call another demon. Well, two actually - Nebiros and Zao Gongeng. Alcor admits that he may be at a disadvantage now. It certainly looks that way as Alcor takes a pounding. Almost defeated, Alcor talks to Hotsuin again and tells him that it’s been a while since they had that much fun. Hotsuin tells him that they never had fun and that saddens Alcor. He had always thought that Hotsuin was his first friend and Hotsuin had never seen Alcor as anything more than Polaris’ tool.

Alcor warns Hotsuin against the future he plans, but Hotsuin won’t change his mind. He’s so misguided! Alcor warns him again and tells him that he was drawn to the younger Hotsuin and came to like him. Hotsuin just tells Alcor that he’s won. But if Alcor doesn’t stop Hotsuin, he will kill Hibiki and he still can’t allow that. He wraps Hotsuin and himself together with his tentacles and apologizes to Hotsuin. Hotsuin has a flashback of the time he spent with Alcor. At one point, Alcor tells him that it was his fault for driving Hotsuin to madness, for “breaking” him, but a much younger Hotsuin says that he will play with Alcor again.

As they float up into the air, Hotsuin realizes that Alcor intends to kill them both and begins to struggle. Hibiki arrives below them on Byakko and calls up to them. Alcor bids farewell to Hibiki as he totally encases himself and Hotsuin in metal and continues to float up into the sky. When it’s high enough, the metal orb explodes. Hibiki is devastated and yells out to Polaris. A voice makes Hibiki look up and a bloodied Hotsuin floats down to him. Hibiki asks about Alcor and Makoto and Hotsuin says that he’s killed them.

Around them, the world is changing. Gears float into the sky and the Transport Terminal is created. Hotsuin says that it’s time for him to go to Polaris. Hotsuin then releases his demons on Hibiki and breaks his phone. Hotsuin invites Hibiki to come after him if he has the strength to defeat the demons. Nebiros and Zao Gongeng attack Hibiki as Hotsuin begins to transport, bidding Hibiki goodbye as he goes. Daichi’s demon appears in time to save Hibiki followed by Daichi and Nitta.

Hibiki tells them that Hotsuin went to Polaris and that Alcor is dead. Daichi calls Hotsuin a monster. The demons attack again and Nitta summons Lugh. Daichi tells Hibiki that they can handle things and that Hibiki should go after Hotsuin, but Hibiki doesn’t want to leave them. They finally convince him to go and he does. He cries as Byakko takes him to the terminal. He reaches it in time to see Daichi and Nitta being engulfed by the Void. Again, Hibiki doesn’t want to leave them, but they urge him to go. Crying over the fate of his friends, Hibiki turns away. Before they disappear, Daichi and Nitta are certain that Hibiki will triumph. It’s sad when they begin to forget who Hibiki is as they lose their memories and even forget who they are.

Hibiki is able to transport just before the terminal is devoured by the Void. He meets Hotsuin on another plane and tells him that Daichi and Nitta are gone and that they are the only ones left. Hotsuin says that he won’t be granted an audience with Polaris until he settles things with Hibiki. Hibiki tells him that he will keep his promise – to beat Hotsuin and appear before Polaris himself! He whips out his phone and so does Hotsuin. Wait. Didn’t Hotsuin break his phone and leave it behind? He carries a spare? LOL Well, I guess this final showdown wouldn’t happen otherwise. Cerberus and Byakko are summoned and the fight is on! I only hope Hibiki wins. I would not want to live in Hotsuin’s world either.

spoiler

Hibiki’s anger is driving him in this fight; Hotsuin has used and killed too many people. During the fight, Hotsuin tells Hibiki that he’s just as powerful as Hotsuin is now. Hibiki may have been born with that power, but they are still pawns of Polaris. And that God is a broken system. But Hotsuin is still determined to win and remake the world in his own image. Hibiki is just as determined not to let that happen.

They continue to talk during their fight and Hibiki tries to make Hotsuin understand that he isn’t as coldhearted as he thinks he is. Hibiki tries to make Hotsuin understand that they are friends. Or were friends. He reminds Hotsuin that he received Hibiki’s dead face clip and came to save him. Hotsuin suddenly weakens. Byakko attacks the weakened Cerberus and they both disappear.

Hibiki tells Hotsuin that it’s enough, and that they don’t have to fight. He tells Hotsuin that “his friend” is doing the wrong thing and tells Hotsuin to stop. Hibiki is sure they can fix things together and be friends again. But Hotsuin feels that he can’t stop now. He tells Hibiki to kill him as he summons Nebiros and Zao Gongeng. Hibiki continues to try and talk him out of it, but to no avail. Hotsuin has one more trick up his sleeve too – Demonic Fusion!

From this fusion of Nebiros and Zao Gongeng, Hotsuin creates Satan! How can Hibiki even think to win against this incredibly huge and powerful demon? But what choice does he have? Satan reaches for him and Hibiki shields himself with his power. But Satan easily breaks the shield and Hibiki calls for Byakko. However, according to Hotsuin, Hibiki has “lost dragon’s protection” and Byakko does not appear. Hotsuin bids Hibiki goodbye and Satan attacks him.

There is a white light and Hotsuin thinks he’s won. However, when the smoke clears, Hibiki is still standing. Somehow Daichi’s demon saved him. When Hibiki checks his phone, all of his friends’ demons have appeared in it. Can he win now? Hotsuin can’t believe what just happened. He says it’s impossible, but I guess that’s the power of friendship. For a man with no emotional ties, of course he can’t believe it. Hibiki calls forth all of the demons, including his own Byakko and fuses them together to create Lucifer. Well, this is interesting. Hibiki has Lucifer attack Satan The attack is powerful enough to hurt Hotsuin as well.

One more attack and the outcome is decided. Lucifer hugs Satan and they both disappear. By the same token, Hibiki is now hugging a dying Hotsuin. He tells Hotsuin that it’s enough and that he doesn’t have to shoulder everything alone. Hotsuin can’t believe that Hibiki actually kept his promise and stopped him. As death closes Hotsuin’s eyes, Hibiki now makes him another promise as tears run down his face – he promises that they will meet again. Polaris appears and Hibiki makes his wish.

It looks like the world is back to normal. Daichi meets Hibiki and they go to eat. They watch the word through the window as Hibiki asks Daichi about his future. It sounds like a very lazy future too, but Daichi is a little worried about it as well. Hibiki tells him that things will work out and Daichi notes that is a bit unusual for him to say. But he also tells Daichi that he has to try harder, which sound more like the Hibiki he knows.

Perhaps things are not back to normal and Hibiki just reset the playing board. Daichi shows him the Nicaea Dead Face site on his phone. Is everything going to start all over again now? Daichi says it’s a joke site, but I’m not so sure about that. Hibiki just tells him that the site looks interesting. They are back in the subway again where everything began. Daichi spots Nitta and tells Hibiki who she is. They aren’t exactly friends, but Daichi would like to be. Hibiki notes that Nitta is definitely Daichi’s type and Hibiki calls out to her, much to Daichi’s dismay.

Nitta comes over and they talk. Hibiki teases Daichi for flirting when it’s obvious that he’s feeling very self-conscious. Nitta confesses that she’s shy, but would like to be friends. Hibiki is surprised to find tears on his face and Daichi asks him why he’s crying. Hibiki says that he’s just happy. Daichi gets a notification on his phone that tells him Hibiki has died. I’m a little worried now. The train is coming. Hibiki looks worried as well.

Big sigh of relief! The train arrives without incident. Daichi and Nitta go to get on, but Hibiki hesitates. He says “so that’s it” and runs away. His wish was to get a chance to fix things. Hibiki runs out of the station and through the city, realizing that if he does nothing, humanity will meet the same fate. He says that humans have to change and there will be hope. As he runs, the other Summoners are shown going about their lives. It’s nice to see everyone alive and well.

Hibiki eventually comes to the Diet Building and asks to see Hotsuin, but the guards won’t let him in. As he argues with them, a cars pulls out and Hibiki can see Hotsuin in the back seat. Hibiki says his name, but Hotsuin says that he has no friends. However, he smiles at Hibiki as the car leaves. Hibiki watches the car drive into the distance and falls to his knees, crying. He must be relieved to see Hotsuin alive. However, Hotsuin is aware of what happened in the last seven days as well, and touches the scar left on his cheek from his fight with Hibiki.

Even Alcor has returned and he observes humanity from atop Tokyo Tower. He says he’s no longer necessary and that makes him sad, but happy as well. He states what living is and assures that humanity will head in the right direction now. Alcor is gone, but he says that “humans can still cause miracles”. The now dried-eyed Hibiki looks up at the sky and states, “we’ll live”. I got goose bumps! It was a wonderful ending to the story. I really enjoyed this anime very much!

Whoa, Sentai has stepped up to the plate in the game of fancier boxes? That’s interesting.

I have to say that I have difficulty reading the white text on the cover in this picture.

Also, Androgyny: this show has it.

It’s interesting that they’re doing a foil slip cover with this.
I guess they’re trying to make up for it not having a BD release for it’s initial release.

ADR Director: Kyle Jones

Hibiki Kuze: Patrick Poole

ANN

Wow sweet box. Of course if Golgo 13 Complete was any indication of the evolution of sets…

Didn’t expect this to be rated TV-MA. There’s quite a disconnect between the ratings on TAN and what the sets say.

Episodes 1-13 (Dub) are live at ANO

Wow. It’s Persona, it’s Gantz, it’s Future Diary…maybe it is faster just to list what it isn’t lol. I’m not sure about the pacing of the show but the premise seems solid.

I’m surprised that SCB isn’t voicing the second-in-command bureaucrat. Kyle Jones is shattering the typecasting as SCB has locked down that role for a while now. I’m not familiar with the Amy Morris actress who plays the “XO”. For some reason her profile link isn’t underlined on ANN’s encyclopedia page for this show.

I don’t see a complete cast list in this thread. If I’d known that Jessica Boone, Jason Douglas and Rob Mungle were back in town for this dub then I would have been on this like white on rice long ago. Speaking of Jessica Boone, it seems that Ilich isn’t the only grammarian and enunciator in this dub

I lol’d when I saw what Sentai did in the show here:
