So now that E3 is over and I’ve had some time to absorb everything, I think I’ll share my thoughts on a few things…
First thing… Between Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, the winner this year is Nintendo. Had you asked me a couple days ago, I would have said Sony, but after a little thought and discussion with my friends, I came to this realization:
If you take Nintendo out of the picture for a moment, Sony doesn’t win E3… Microsoft loses E3.
When I go over Sony’s conference again, I realize that they didn’t really announce anything particularly exciting or game-changing. Of the games they showed off, most of the good looking ones aren’t exclusive. Sony showed the trailers for Final Fantasy Versis XIII (now Final Fantasy XV), and Kingdom Hearts 3, but those aren’t exclusive to the PS4, so even though it was part of their conference, you can’t take the hype of those games as being part of the hype for Sony. The same goes for the other gameplay demos they showed off like Destiny. So if you don’t take the non-exclusive games into account, it was really business as usual. Not very exciting at all. Except that near the end, they said three things that earned them as close to a standing ovation as you can get from an audience with computers on their laps… They said they support used games, there will be no periodic check ins, and the price of the console is $399 (which is $100 less than the Xbox one). At one point after their conference they said that all they did was emphasize something that they were already planning to do, with the used game support and everything. On top of that, the reason the Xbox One is $100 more is likely due to the addition of the Kinect 2. So it isn’t what Sony did that makes them the winner, it’s what Microsoft did to makes themselves the loser.
So back to Nintendo. Despite not having a conference like Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo did two things that make them the winner in my eyes… They showed me the Wind Waker remake, and they showed me a new Super Smash Brothers game. Zelda alone is enough for me to buy a Wii U, but Smash Brothers just makes it all the better…
Now let’s talk about the rest of E3… If you had to ask me overall who won E3? It would be tough, but I can’t decide between EA, and Ubisoft.
Over at EA, I get Star Wars Battlefront being made by DICE, who make the battlefield franchise, so they know what they’re doing. On top of that, DICE is also finally making a new Mirror’s Edge game, which despite the first Mirror’s Edge being a flop at launch, is one of my favorite games.
Now, Ubisoft showed me more Watchdogs, which is shaping up to be a very nice game. But on top of that, they showed me what has to be one of the biggest surprises of E3 for me… The Division. This game looks like it’s going to be pretty fun, and being a Tom Clancy game, it’s more grounded in reality than most other games shown at E3. I’m kind of interested in how their matchmaking system is going to work… Supposedly, it’s designed to match you with people who are similarly susceptible to real-world interruptions. For example if you have a small child which requires your attention every now and again, the game will match you with people who either have similar situations, or are understanding of such a situation where you may need to stop playing for a few minutes every now and again.
I’ve already pre-ordered my PS4, and Destiny… Now we just have to play the waiting game…
