Does anyone agree with this article? I think it makes great points. The West usually got high quality shows outside of the OVA/Movie era of late 80s/90s.
Hmm…
While I can’t fully agree, the easier accessibility does mean we’re able to get the lower quality shows on top of the good ones. And I’m not just meaning cesspool that deserves to be thrown in a volcano, like Don’t Hurt Me, My Healer, but just mediocre shows, like Campfire Cooking in another world. However, it doesn’t deter from modern great series, such as Ayakashi Triangle, Onimai, or Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro!
(Your miles may vary with show selection. My personal opinions on the series selected in this post. Lol.)
I think people here are just far too fickle and judgmental with things of of a fictional nature.
We got to remember the studios there are aiming at the merchandise buyers. The Kids and then the adult anime fans that spend to much. We are seeing more of the slosh happening because that is what is selling there not here. Also seeing a lot more stuff we used to not get for sure. It’s a balance in my opinion. The balance gets thrown off every so often when companies like say Kadokawa keep green lighting every thing they can in one genre.
We use to only get the upper tier stuff. If you check out the Master Licensing List archive, you’ll see that 10 years ago (Fall 2013) Funimation /Sentai / Aniplex USA combined only licensed around 20 titles total
In Winter 2023 that total jumped to Approximately 76 titles (over 3x as much) so instead of just getting the popular / ecchi stuff that would sell, we’re getting almost everything being produced now, and as such a lot of lower quality product, which, back then, never would have been licensed.
