During its flight, an unknown alien race appeared and started laying siege upon City 7. However, its attacks are not conventional – instead of trying to destroy them, they steal what is known as “spiritia”, rendering victims unresponsive and zombie-like. During these battles, Basara always goes out into the middle of the warzone, singing his songs and expecting friend and foe to listen and be moved by his music.

Harmony Gold Launches ‘Robotech Academy’ Mini-Series Pilot Kickstarter Campaign

posted on 2014-07-05 13:01 EDT
If it meets its US$500,000 goal, Harmony Gold expects to have the pilot done by July 2015

Kickstarter: UPDATE #30: THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

August 2, 2014

As it affects me, this means that I’ll have to pay (minimum) 70 bucks to get the bluray of a single episode of this?

I find it a bit troubling that they say that %500,000 will only help to cover the cost of making a single 24 minute episode. Wow.

I think it is interesting that they’re putting the “have yourself animated” offer out there. Having seen the results of a similar offer in other media I’m hoping that they’ll do some flattering touch-up work of whoever takes them up on that offer.

If there was ever a reason NOT to support this project, It’s this Question in the Q&A section with their answer…

Why should I support Harmony Gold when they hate Macross?
If you love all things Robotech, you’ll want to take part in the KickStarter for Robotech Academy! At Harmony Gold, we’re huge fans of Macross, and our company has supported the brand since the 1980s, during a time when it was almost impossible to find anime on TV in North America. However, we want to make it clear that Harmony Gold licensed the exclusive rights to distribute Macross and its derivatives outside of Japan. The company has acquired these rights through all the official and legal channels in good faith, and we have protected these rights successfully for the last 30 years.[/quote]

Meaning they could Release SDF Macross all it’s derivatives, if they wanted to, but they Choose to focus on Robotech. sigh

-See they could be doing a Kickstarter to Release SDF Macross, and all of it’s Derivatives on Blu-Ray (if available), but no, we get this.

While “everyone knows” that Harmony Gold has the exclusive distribution rights I’ve also long heard the “fan wisdom” that it’d be a cold day in hell before the Japanese give HG the media and the OK to distribute it, leaving Macross in a perpetual impasse. Is that not the case?

More concerning IMO is the allegation that HG failed to finish their last Robotech Shadow Chronicles creation…

That’s the general consensus.
But to be honest, unless you either work for HG’s licensing department or one of the JP companies that holds the international rights, you’ll never truly know the “real” reason, nor will anyone else.

Tony Oliver? I guess he’s been alright in his VA roles but his direction over at Bang/Zoom has been extremely questionable over the years and so I’m leery of him in all regards.

What is with these anime kickstarters and “challenge coins”? The BGC 2033 one was hyping a coin and I don’t see the appeal.

So the plot of this is using a Vandread/Star Trek: Voyager setup, with a bit of Infinite Ryvius thrown in?

“Child prodigy Wally”? Really? Is Wil Wheaton available for this dub?

The PR guy who narrated this seemed surprisingly solid. The Tony Oliver cameo (was it just me or was he channeling Vic?) might have been one of his best ever performances lol.

If the point of this Kickstarter is to prove to big-money investors that there’s a market for this then I wonder if the shaky support that this venture has gotten will be interpreted.

I don’t know 5 people who could give $35. Most of the people I know could only give $2, if you catch my drift. Apparently idol singers, or lack thereof, are serious business.

Perhaps part of the problem here is that they restricted the cheapest bluray options. As of this post there is only 1 bluray available for under 100 dollars.

The 50 dollar DVD option seems to be unlimited. The only unrestricted bluray option is literally twice as much as the unlimited DVD option and offers no bonus over the DVD option save for the bluray.

Why would they shoot themselves in the foot like this?

I rather hope that the unattainable $500,000 figure was considered something of a “stretch goal” by HG and that they did manage to raise enough interest and funds to demonstrate to backers with real capital that this project has enough of an audience to be greenlit. Sort of like an interest poll where your interest was corroborated by your cash.

What’s the alternative, that HG set the bar too high and wanted too much too fast and burnt out on this? :frowning:

Is Macross really that good?

Depends, I felt that Minmei was waaaaaaay less annoying than she is in Robotech. She also has a larger repertoire of songs instead of just one. I like SDF Macross better, but there are some people who prefer Robotech. (I have the Animeigo Special Edition Release of Macross with all the liner notes in it.)
