That explains a lot . Khara probably wrote a script trying to keep it close to the Japanese way of language flow and it translated to English as a bit stiff and not natural . The more I thought on it and thinking with that in mind . It kind of reminds me of some of the Asian market english dubs ,but with natural English speaking actors . Basically to literal of a translation . ADV had the balls to fight Gainax on some stuff . Netflix and VSI were probably afraid theyād pull the license if they did that . I think that may also be why they went with a freelance company like VSI because someone like Bang Zoom would have questioned them . After watching a few more episodes Iām not going to be able to watch the way Iād like to for sure .
Iām curious if the other language dubs are coming off that way to the native speakers .
With the discussion of sticking closer to a direct translation from the Japanese dialogue, they removed quite possibly the best dub line in the process.
Alternate dimension Rei: āAre you riding his bologna pony?ā
My soul hurtsā¦
I kind of feel bad for the new voice actors and staff . The script kind of sabotaged them . They are Iām sure getting some not so nice social interactions over something they had no control over . From what I got even if they had used the original dub cast it would have been same issue that should be what is being focused on . Which now in my mind at least is not adjusting for the natural flow differences in each language . Iām sure a people would have still complained ,but in another way saying they should have gotten a new cast .
Random thought on my thought : You know though maybe the reason they went for the cast/staff they did was because they did not question things because they were just happy to have their name attached to Neon Genesis Evangelion . So should I feel bad ? Donāt know the answer and I doubt Iāll ever get a clear one .
My main issue to be honest is if they could they should have included the ADV dub . So newer to NGE people without bias can compare the two . Of course they could spend a lot of money and get the original ADV release used or do other stuff we donāt condone.
Donāt know who this dude is, and not sure if itās accurate, but hereās a take on why the dub is the way it is.
If itās too small, hereās the tweet itās attached to
@Slowhand I had to go get my glasses .
Most of the stuff Iām hearing is along those lines or you should learn Japanese . Anno without being insulting is well Anno . Iām not sure I can explain without being insulting .
Reading that post makes me wish there was a way they could have kept the original dub for 3.0 alongside the redub. Sadly that didnāt happen, and it will probably turn into another dub lost to the sands of time.
Please excuse me while I cry to my DVD set of Evaā¦
I kinda like this article. It doesnāt seem too bais towards either dub.
Itās probably one of the better articles Iāve read .
A lot of the others either it comes off as they hate the new dub , hate the ADV dub , or just hate dubs in general . This one actually makes me think I should sit down and give the new dub another chance .
Thank you for posting @MaouSadao .
No prob .
Honestly, I just watched Eva Death (True) (The series compilation movie), and the new dub still is really hard to adjust to.
New Asuka is definitely the hardest to adapt to. Everyone else (even Shinji to some extent) I can tolerate. More so, Iām really enjoying Ryan Bartleyās take on Rei and Carrie Keranenās Misato. Asuka though, not being any fault of Stephanie McKeon or her performance, just doesnāt feel right. I canāt exactly pinpoint any specific moment in comparison, just overall. Maybe itās due to Tiffany Grantās Asuka leaving that impression on me so many years agoā¦

Before I post this, I donāt condone my own actions. Itās more of a test on a blank slate.
I received this in the mail today. (Purchased it off of eBay Friday nightā¦)
(Yes itās an āOfficial Malaysian Copyā of Eva with the ADV dub. There is no way Iām loaning out my Frankenstein Platinum Collection.)
Just so weāre clearā¦
Anyway, going to loan it out to a couple friends alongside my password to Netflix. I want the opinions of people who havenāt seen the original dub.
I can post their thoughts if yāall want me to.
Iād probably do the same if I was planning on loaning out a copy . Just saw a copy of the original perfect collection is a $147.50 with current bid . Looks like once the Netflix dub came out sales of the ADV sets bumped up on eBay . Like a lot of the sets that had a buy it now sold and then the auctions started getting bid up .
So, apparently that dialogue they changed for Kaworu really has an impact on the fans of the show.
(I only got the resurrection and reborn discs cause they had the original versions of 21-24 and not reworked DC versions posing as the originalā¦)
Geez . I think I have both of those still sealed in one of my footlockers . I only have them for the same reason I have German ADV copies of Underwaterrayramano because they were a present . I think one has a Anime Network sticker on it even .
Hmmmā¦so itās okay for the Spanish dub to say
Third Childā¦not Children
and
I love youā¦not I like you
in Spanish, but not in English? Wonder what the other dubs used?
Overall, while the new English dub is fine, the Spanish dub is leagues better. If they release an AFFORDABLE Blu-Ray that includes the Spanish dub, then I might snatch it up.
Still hug my ADV releases with both arms.
According to what Iāve read, the outcry from the new Italian dub is leagues worse than what the English dub got.
Of course, I canāt speak Italian, so honestly IDK.
You can speak Spanish too @tonka?
Hi five
YouTube recommendations are awesome sometimes:
(NSFW: language)
Looking it up, it is real. Only available on disc 7 from the original Platinum Collection.
Anyone here can confirm that?
Yes, that is legit. Itās the second commentary track that is on that episode. The first one is with ADR Director Matt Greenfield and Sean McCoy.
