I’ve heard pretty good things about this show. A lot of people say it is better than the first series. When Sentai announced the first one, a lot of posters on Mania and ANN said they wished it had been this one. I will definitely check it out.
did they change his name, or are the subtitles just flawed on VOD?
hope someone edits them before DVD or BDs are made for Polyphonica Climson S
episode 1 has a character named Pholon rather than Phoron…other episodes unknown until the air on VOD. hope it gets fixed before it gets shipped out with wrong subtitles.
L’s and R’s are interchangeable in translating many things from Japanese to English. It’s why you still have people complaining that Viz used Naruto instead of Naluto. It’s also worth noting that many vocal fans complained about using Phoron in the first series, instead of Pholon. Basically, it comes down to the personal preference of the translator and the approval by the Japanese rights holders.
Also, the Crimson S DVDs are already on sale, so these are likely the subs on them.
Well, the English logo only says Nartuo because that’s what Viz chose. It could have said Naluto if they wanted it to. Also, who’s they? Season 1 and Crimson S were licensed and released by two different companies. Also, they didn’t change the name. The name of the character is still the same in the show. This isn’t Sailor Moon where Usagi became Serena. This is just a different and equally acceptable way of spelling the same name. It’s more like someone spelling my name Kody instead and Cody. As long as the name wasn’t changed, I don’t see what the big deal is. The spelling isn’t 100% consistent but I don’t see how that would affect enjoyment of a show.
I was going to ask the same question. It’s inconsistent and weren’t the subtitles done by the same people on this end? Some of the names make more sense as spelled in the first series. But it’s not the end of the world - it seems like a pretty asinine thing to whine on about, in fact.
Most likely the subtitles and translations were handled by someone entirely different. The companies and individuals used by Sentai and likely Swithblade back then no longer seem to translate projects for them.
no Viz couldn’t have gone Naluto, as it wouldnt have sold… too many people these days KNOW the names of shows and characters thanks to other means, and look at the legal streams on Crunchy and you can clearly see the Japanese NARUTO.
the days of putting it over on the Americans has passed. Krillin is still Krillin, but could have been done Krirrin. dont change peoples names, proper nouns are expected to stay the same. Horo v Holo…its a proper name, dont try this “converted l’s for r’s” crap.
Um, you really have no idea what you are talking about. Naruto started streaming on CR long after Viz had licensed and started televising it. CR was still fan sub site back then with no legal content. Even before Viz licensed it, there were many fansubs available and several of them, including some on CR titled the show Naluto. There was even a small uproar from certain corners of fandom when Viz “changed the name”.
In InuYasha, the cat is clearly Kirara, yet the English version refers to her as Kilala. You have the same thing with Godzilla, which is actually titled Gojirra. Since you clearly know so much about translating the Japanese language, can I asked which university you studied it at? Or are you just speaking out your butt as a fanboy?
yeah and Smoker just had plumes of smoke coming out of his mouth, and Sanji was sucking a lollipop…
i dont want Ameritrash stories. if i did i would watch them. when i watch anime i want the art from the actual show, not added cost for some nutjob subber (fan or otherwise) changing logos or anything else. i jsut nee the subtitle in English, or the voices in English. that is the job of the people i expect to be done, not changing the art.
TAN going to go into the museum and repaint the Mona Lisa to straighten her teeth? i dont think so, so TAN, VIZ, Sentai, Funi, etc can keep their ****-beaters off the art and do the job they need to do which is make the words that convert to English into English words. (and distribute in Region 1 format)
Disney, Freleng, Hanna and Barbara are all dead, and all other Ameritrash animation is just that, trash; so let me se the art i want to see.
English rules state you dont change someone proper name. is that or is that NOT correct dlagonlidel_cody?
if Ameritrash studios want to make their own art in anime style, then they should get off their collective arses and make something decent that people will watch. Legend of Korra is coming out, so it can be done if someone has the balls to do it and isnt in denial or severe culture shock.
again as far as PCS is concerned pick a name and stick with it, ONE name Phoron or Pholon, because my ears cant tell the difference. dont switch between the two. you can HEAR Horo distinctly the R in the Japanese spoken language versions because she calls herself Horo the Wise Wolf enough times you can distinctly hear the sound made. if the writer disagreed and wanted Holo and the VA mispronounced then fine. at least that show picked ONE name for her when Funi dubbed Spice and Wolf.
also many of the fansubbers did NOT reversion the logo, and other still at that time of Crunchy beginnings just uploaded the direct copy of the show with the original log intact. again meaning PEOPLE know what the show was to be called before VIZ got it, or ANYONE got an English license for it.
the times they are a changing. this is why shows stream simulcast or almost simulcast because people dont like waiting 3 years for a show because enthusiasm may have died from the japan company long ago for an expired manga, or cancelled show. they now get the money at the same time without having to wait, and the anime wathcing public gets les crap like 4-kids.
[/rant]
that is all i want, continuity and leave proper names alone. so…NO, i do NOT want flied lice with that.
And most of those so called fans who watched the fansubs on CR don’t know how to speak Japanese, let alone read Kanji. The Japanese text for Naruto could have said “The Mr PeePee Happy Show” and they wouldn’t have known any difference. They would have just thought “wow, that logo looks cool.”. If someone didn’t tell them what the Kanji said, they would have no way of knowing.
Also, the L and R thing doesn’t just come from companies like Sentai and Funimation. It also comes from translators on the other side of the pacific. They also get approved by the Japanese companies and creative directors. They ultimately have final say on how the names are spelled. In Spice and Wolf, as well as Loups Garrous, they were character names that sounded as though they were being pronounced with an R, but when seen on screen, they clearly were spelled with an L. So in cases like that, do you to with the written spelling or the way you think the person pronounces the name?
I work with several Chinese nurses, and they all pronounce my name with an L in it, even though one isn’t there. They even try to write it that way. Does it change my name? No, and I don’t see why it’s work getting upset over.
no matter how it is pronounced, do they SPELL your name wrong?
since Pholon and Phoron were subtitled… it is the spelling i am talking most about, remember i cant really hear when anyone says it in the Polyphonica episodes i have seen so far.
Korean guy back in high school had some problems with English words, and i told him to throw out what he knew, and gave him a phonetic alphabet that represents the letters of his alphabet to match sounds to.
i cant pronounce the higirana or katakana that i can read, but can the romanji, and i can write names in a kanji by copying the kanji rather than trying to translate it. likewise the korean friend could spell English names correct when given a spelling.
the original writer/producer of anime, needs to try to write the proper names in a few languages so it can be translated. those languages that want to make up their own based on approximate names (Jose/ Joseph etc) will do what they want.
Im hoping Coatie isnt changed to Cootie in episodes beyond the point where her full name (which wasnt changed) is used.
just because Naruto in Tokyo is Naruto and in Osaka is Naluto…doesnt mean one of the dialects isnt slurring the word, just like over here where y’all people up north speak funny compared to us down in the south. at least we can both spell water, even though some say woter.
As I said in my post, YES they spell it wrong. They throw in an L that doesn’t belong there…lol. I’m sort of glad you brought up Coatie, because most fans complained because they said her name was actually Cortie…lol
Considering we have a company that forgot to our promised subtitles on a release, or badly handled the product listings and PR, one that can’t cast a dub to save their life, another one that has at least one significant botch requiring a replacement plan every couple months, and a struggling one that can’t hit a street date to save their life. Squabbling over a name that can be spelled with a L or an R is relatively small potatoes. At least they didn’t forget the subs or encode the discs so badly they won’t work in some players, unlike some other companies.
oddly enough my namesake had a namesake item from a setting called Dragonlance, and killed several dragons, so what would cody end up riding after?
