Puella Magi Madoka Magica / Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magica

Hopefully this is more in lines with Durarara!! release price if they are indeed releasing it their selves. Cause I don’t think many here will be willing to pay more then $200.00 for this series. Even at that price I don’t see many. Course even with the higher prices I’ve heard all of the Aniplex USA releases have sold out or at least rather well. That it looks more like they will be handling it their selves makes me wonder how high is the licensing cost?
If it is AoA, I’m rather curious as to what their price point would be on this.
Save for Baccano! (which is actually a re-release on BD at a reasonable price tag), they have yet to release a single cour series.
And given that it is a single cour, it might not be as steep as some of their other releases.

Though I think it’ll boil down to two major things:
Licensing cost
w/wo a Dub

Honestly, that’s kind of the reason I’d rather Sentai snag this.

A> It’d probably be cheaper any way you slice it over AoA
B> For this particular series, I actually wouldn’t want a dub for it.

With that being said though, if it was Sentai and dubbed, they could actually release it on BD, and it would be my first ever BD purchase. Though I would definitely be double dipping for a DVD set as well to watch regularly, and keep the BD for a later time whenever I actually have to upgrade my entertainment system to HD capabilities.

Aniplex Prepping For ‘Madoka Magica’ US Release?

Ah, for the old days, when many a license was discovered through domain name registrations. A new one has popped up that’s not exactly surprising as Crunchyroll has discovered that Aniplex of America has registered MadokaMagicaUSA.com as of June 9th and this is similar to the layout of their Durarara!! US site as well. As of now, it doesn’t actually go to anything and amusingly, depending on your browser, it recommends going to the Japanese official site for the series. Puella Magi Madoka Magica had a bit of a rough broadcast run during this past winter season because of the tsunami, earthquake and nuclear plant disasters in Japan as episodes got shifted all over the place and it gained a lot of attention with the final episode’s date getting a big ad in the newspaper to highlight it. The series is one that has garnered a lot of fans over the season and continues to generate a good deal of merchandise and attention while having excellent production values due to the animation from Shaft and the deft hand of Akiyuki Shinbo as the director. With a few manga series ongoing and a novel just announced in March, it’s a property that definitely has a lot of life left in it.

The anime series, clocking in at twelve episodes, was one of the more noteworthy ones absent from simulcast distribution during the season. Aniplex USA has had a very multi-tiered approach to bringing titles over, both for simulcast, home video on their own or through distribution with other companies, and dabbling in TV broadcast deals, that there’s no consistency for fans to latch on to in order to see what might happen. Registering the domain makes it pretty much a certainty that they will release it here, but the form it will take remains to be seen. The Blu-ray release of the series in Japan made waves as the first volume sold 53,000 copies in its first week with an important new record broken of 22,000 sold on its first day alone.

If you were to purchase this series on home video here, what format/pricing would you want to see based on what Aniplex has done so far?

Coffee God I will disagree about the lack of a dub being good on 2 accounts. Number one this title can be huge and hitting the mainstream is a possibility with this. This could be the new Evangelion if you will.

Number 2 if this is Aniplex of America’s(which I think it is at this point) I would love to see it get on tv on Adult Swim and to do that a dub is needed. Don’t laugh, again I think this can be the next Eva.

I can’t wait for AX and Otakon with this series, Otakon is hyping 5 seiyus and well, they could be them…

If it is then it’s probably Bang Zoom dubbing which means either Bandai or Aniplex USA.

That’s still a possibility too, since MB uses BZ! from time to time.

My first thought on seeing the 06/21 Google Doodle (First Day of Summer):

OK, first impression was wrong.
But it did startle me for a second!

Sunday was 2nd day with “Contract with Kyubey” curry + Nendoroid figure set

The official Twitter account of Good Smile Café, the restaurant run by the figure maker Good Smile Company east of Tokyo, announced on Sunday that some people had to wait at least seven hours for a seat, even though they lined up within a half hour of the café’s opening.

Since its first day on May 3, the limited-time Madoka Magica Café revamp of Good Smile Café has attracted thousands of fans of the anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica. The event will last until July 18 in the city of Matsudo in Chiba Prefecture. The café has been hosting full houses for days; some days had a line of 150 to 180 fans waiting to get in.

On Sunday at 11:30 am — a half hour after the café opened, the place already had a full house with 180 more fans standing in line outside the café. To reduce the tension, the café started to pass out tickets, suggesting that the fans in line return at scheduled times later. Fans who got the tickets at 11:30 a.m. were asked to come back seven hours later at 6:30 p.m.

Sunday was the second day of a new campaign menu with an exclusive Nendoroid figure set, while supplies last. The 4,000-yen (about US$50) “Contract with Kyubey Set” features the Kyubey curry plate inspired by the polarizing creature in the anime, an exclusive metal badge, and a pre-order for a Nendoroid figure of the main magical girl character Madoka Kaname with a bonus Kyubey mascot. Good Smile Company will ship the pre-ordered Nendoroid figure for free, at least to Japanese postal addresses.

The café has also been serving a dessert in the shape of Charlotte the Dessert Witch. On Saturday, the first day of the new menu, the café reported that about 200 people were waiting in line at 11:50 a.m.

Madoka Magica is a 2011 hit anime series produced by SHAFT. It is directed by Akiyuki Shinbo (Maria Holic, Bakemonogatari, Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei) and written by famous game scriptwriter Gen Urobuchi (Saya no Uta, Fate/zero) with original character designs by Ume Aoki.

Just a little look at how popular this series truely is.

1 Million Stream Free Madoka Magica in Japan, Taiwan

About 1 million viewers in Japan and Taiwan watched as the entire Maho Shojo Madoka Magica anime series streamed live from 7:00 p.m. on June 18 to 1:00 a.m. on June 19. Nico Nico Douga, a Japanese video streaming site, ran all 12 episodes of the television anime series in a live streaming broadcast last Saturday. This viewership number is a record for a live broadcast of an entire anime series on Nico Nico Douga. The usual audience for this type of streaming event is about 100,000 viewers.

By June 21, over 1,860,000 user comments appeared on the site’s real-time commenting service connected with these videos. Starting 30 minutes before the episodes began streaming, users began flooding the site and commenting in anticipation of the broadcast. After the live streaming ended, many users praised the series and expressed how the show deeply impacted them.

This broadcast surpasses the 570,000 member audience viewing Lucky Star for New Year’s on the site and 520,000 that tuned in for the streaming of the popular series Bakemonogatari.

Sure it’s popular in Japan/Taiwan, but will that popularity translate to the States as well. What’s insanley popular in Japan doesn’t always go well here, and what bombed there can be a hit here.

And the stream was free; compared to how many copies of the first two volumes were sold: about 60,000+ copies.

People love free stuff.

I know I do.

Actually, the current standings for the first two vols. as of this week are

Vol 1: 74,718 -> 75,182 (*8 wk) - adds 464 BDs.
Vol 2: 69,301 -> 69,969 (*4 wk) - adds 668 BDs.

-lol-
However, I wasn’t referring to popularity in the States, much less the conversion from popularity to DVD sales in the States.
