I didn’t know. It’s one of those things that happened a long time ago to the point that some just don’t really stop to think that there’s more to it, or just don’t care enough to ask.
Think of that ham story where, for some reason, it was tradition to cut the ends off the ham before putting it in the oven. Turns out, the grandma who started it, only did it because the hams were too long to fit in the baking pan they were using.
