New Releases This Week: Slice of Lifery

This week we’re going on a bit of a slice of life tear, with three new titles becoming available, each with their own take on the genre. GLASSLIP delivers a more serious tone to life, while He is My Master, our latest Sentai Selects title, adds it’s own flavor of comedy to the mix. Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb returns with its own brand of slice of lifery that has made it a pillar of the genre. What are you picking up this week?

With their final year of high school underway, small-town girl Toko Fukami and her friends are about to be thrown into the real world. Where most graduates are ready to leave their lives behind and blaze their own trails, Toko has always had just one dream: to take over her family-run glassmaking business. But the arrival of unusual transfer student Kakeru Okikura shatters Toko’s formerly rose-colored life, when he begins to claim that he can hear a voice that predicts the future.

HE IS MY MASTER

Yoshitaka is young, rich and not bad looking, but as runaway sisters Izumi and Mitsuki Sawatari quickly discover upon becoming his maids, he has some SERIOUS issues. His insistence on being called “Master” is only the tip of a large, weird iceberg! But with Izumi’s net worth in the negative digits, things like Yoshitaka’s fixation on dressing the girls up are just crosses Izumi will have to bear! She can do cosplay, she can do windows, but can she remain sane? Find out in He Is My Master!

With the encouragement of her friends, she opens up to new possibilities in Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb!

The restaurants and bars in anime seem like a world away, and after a long day at work or school, surely we’re not the only ones who want to jump through the screen for a bite. While we can only imagine what it’s like to dine in these anime restaurants, we can dream.

The pub that main character Bell Cranel visits throughout the series glows with a jovial atmosphere and seems abundant with good food and interesting people. One of the waitresses even says, “Isn’t this place interesting with all the different people who come?” We’d like to share a table beside these adventurers, travelers, merchants, and gods. More importantly, we’d love to trade stories with the pub owner, Mama Mia!

[size=16]Rabbit House Café (Is the Order a Rabbit?)[/size]
Rabbit House Café is a coffee shop by day and a bar by night. This classically designed anime restaurant is staffed by some of the cutest waitresses and baristas of all time, and they even deliver coffee with swirls of unique latte art! (One of them can draw a tank out of foam.) After a long day, it would be nice to visit this quaint little place and try to pet Tippy the “rabbit".

[size=16]Yukihira’s (Food Wars!)[/size]
You saw this coming, but we would eat at Yukihira’s from Food Wars WITHOUT QUESTION if it were possible. Apparently, everything Soma and his man-crush worthy father, Joichiro, cook is foodgasmic, even dishes as simple as their fried rice. This is the kind of Japanese restaurant we need in our lives, where everything on the menu has, “take my money and my soul” written all over it.

The tavern in the town that sprung up around Arnus might be the most coveted respite in GATE’s Special Region. Your order is served by a bunny girl, and the tavern takes “cross cultural exchange” to a whole new level with visitors ranging from travelers from around the empire to the men of the JSDF. Just imagine the conversations you could overhear over a nice cold drink!

There are plenty of mochi shops in Japan to visit, but Tama-ya is special. It sits in the middle of a quaint, but busy, shopping district, serving mochi made with love. The owners are constantly looking for different ways to promote their product, and it’s hard not to fantasize about eating their mochi when watching the series. On top of that, you might have a chance to meet the interesting talking “bird”, Dera.

You can almost smell the bread from the Le Cour Bakery through the screen. Rick’s bread is considered the “bread of happiness” around town, and it’s even served to you by cute girls. The customers love starting their day with freshly baked bread from the bakery, and apparently, this bread is so good, it promotes interspecies relationships. In other news, if you think the bread is too cute to eat, you HAVE to watch the ending theme.

Q. Are you doing any more giveaways this year?
A. We are, actually! Holidays are a great time to run fun little giveaways, and judging from the entries into our Bounty Basket Giveaway, you guys love them too. Right now we are judging the turkey hands submitted, but we do have something going on in December as well, just haven’t announced it yet. What’s the prize? It’s a doozy.


Q. I’ve been following you on Twitter since you officially came back from hiatus in 2013, so I know that whoever runs the Sentai social media accounts is an actual fan, not some desk jockey. As a fan, what upcoming show are you the most excited about releasing?
A. Thanks! Oh, I even remember the day when we came back to social media, it was very satisfying to let people know we were going to be active again. Hopefully we have lived up to expectations so far.

As a fan, I am desperately awaiting the Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun release. It was one of my favorite shows of the past few years, and when I heard we were dubbing it I was simply over the moon. I would also like to thank everyone who has requested a CE for Nozaki on our social channels (there have been a TON of requests), makes me look a little less crazy when I ask about it as well around here haha. Anyway, yes definitely Nozaki.

Slice of Life shows are perfect for when you want some light, fluffy fun, but they can also offer some deeper lessons! Here are some of our favorite examples of everyday anime life teaching us the really important stuff.

[size=16]EVERYBODY HAS SOMEBODY (MY LOVE STORY)[/size]
We here at Sentai love watching beautiful shoujo maidens being wooed by magically handsome bishounen, but it’s always refreshing to see an unconventional couple in anime. Takeo isn’t the most conventionally attractive man in the world, but that doesn’t affect Rinko’s undying devotion to him. These two prove that no matter who you are, there’s someone out there just for you!

[size=16]LOVE COMES IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES (SAKURA TRICK)[/size]
Haruka and Yuu started out as best friends, but ended up feeling something much deeper for one another. Even though Sakura Trick mostly comes off as a lighthearted, comedic slice of life title, the love between these two girlfriends is anything but superficial! These two perfectly illustrate the idea that true love transcends any boundaries, including gender.


[size=16]DON’T JUDGE PEOPLE BASED ON THEIR APPEARANCE (MONSTER MUSUME)[/size]
While Monster Musume: Everyday Life With Monster Girls is by and large a romantic comedy-tinged slice of life title, there is a serious theme underpinning the world these characters inhabit: discrimination. In the first episode, Miia faces harsh treatment when some passersby notice that she is a lamia, much to our Kimihito’s chagrin. Hopefully the thorough whooping (courtesy of our chivalrous protagonist) helped these bullies understand that you shouldn’t treat people badly just because they look different than you.

[size=16]FOOD TASTES BETTER WITH FRIENDS (GOURMET GIRL GRAFFITI)[/size]
The first episode of Gourmet Girl Graffiti finds Ryo Machiko agonizing over the fact that all of the food she cooks seems to be lacking something special. But when she cooks for her new friend, Kirin Morino, she discovers that her food tastes amazing! Through the course of the series, Ryo’s friends prove time and time again that the most important ingredient to a successful meal is the company of your loved ones.

[size=16]SOMETIMES, YOU NEED A LITTLE IMAGINATION (LOVE, CHUNIBYO & OTHER DELUSIONS)[/size]
Yuta Togashi has been trying to put his delusional middle school years behind him, but Rikka Takanashi and her wild imagination have different plans in mind. While reluctant at first, Yuta soon learns that maybe make believe isn’t so bad, and, sometimes, can even be sort of helpful. Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions drives home the point that a little imagination can make our lives that much more magical!
