Video Game News & Discussion 2009-2017

what about dr.mario

So what do you guys think of achievements/trophies? I know some think they detract others from actually enjoying the game, and others think they’re a fun additional challenge.

I fall in the latter category, though if people only focus on gaining the achievos/trophies, I gotta scratch my head. I remember reading an article about a woman who only played game for the achievements, and would gather buddies together for the online achievements. She admitted she had a problem, I felt kinda bad for her, specially since she had a kid and husband.

I love the achievment option with the games, makes me feel like ya get more for your money!

I am fine with achievements/trophies. I did not care for the online ones as much ,but then again some of them force ya to make friends with people which even in Online gaming is important.

I’ll admit, I do love the achievements.

In my opinion, it makes it more fun to strive for certain things to get the achievements. It’s always a good feeling when you finally get that achievement you’ve been trying to get for days.

Aside from that, it gives more purpose to doing certain things. Like, why would I have EVER bothered getting 100% completion in GTA IV if not for the achievement attached to it?

Yeah, some of the trophies for Little Big Planet on the PS3 require you to make a level and have enough people favorite it. I’ll never get a platinum in LBP because I’m not creative at all. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, it does feel like a relief–especially knowing you can finally move on to another game. The downside to this is that once I’m done “farming” for achievements or trophies, I feel like I’ve worn the game to the core, so I sometimes fear I’ll never feel the motivation to play that game again. I guess it’s all about moderation if I want to feel like I’ve still got more to gain from playing a game.

I remember when I was a kid, I’d shoot for 100% in the old Playstation/N64 games. I think seeing the 100% next to my profile was an achievement enough for me. However these days, people can put a lot more content in their games, requiring a lot more time to get through, so people may be less motivated to get the 100% without any extra rewards besides the 100% (though in reality, gamerscore is still just a number next to your profile… which others can see!)

Some people strive for a high GS to show off their dedication, others just do it out of some OCD for completing a game.

I generally approve of achievements. Really depends on the game though, sometimes the creators can come up with fun and memorable achievements, while others do standard “Beat the game 100 times in one day” kind of achievements.

Given that WoW is one of the more recent achievement filled games that I’ve played I’m going to use them as an example. Yes, they have some standard ones like “reached lvl 20!” or “artisan in a profession” type of stuff, but then they also have “survive a 65 ft drop” which was one of my personal favorites because I like dropping off high ledges and seeing how much health I lose. Or there’s always the classic Leroy Jenkins achievement, which is something I can’t wait to get. Mass raid party outside, gearing up to defeat some super hard boss, only to have a Jenkins run in their all willie nillie ruining their chances of winning! And I"m going to have my mic up and should LEERROOOOOOY JENKINS!

Those are the kind of achievements I like, the ones where you didn’t do anything towards the game itself, but for the kind of acts that make you feel good inside, but never received recognition for in the games of past.

Not sure how many of you use Mac, but this should be good news for everyone–more players, since the two platforms will be connected through multiplayer.

The Steam Play option sounds great for people with both a Mac and Windows–you can switch between your Mac and Windows OS and pick up where you left in a game on the other machine.

The first games to be brought to Mac are: Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series. Portal 2 will be released to both Mac and Windows on the same day.

Rumors started when Valve released http://www.macrumors.com/2010/03/03/valve-teases-upcoming-half-life-release-for-mac/ last week.

Yay more games for Mac! Though it probably doesn’t do me any good until I upgrade to an Intel system.

Finally games for mac? Might give me a reason to use my mac at home now haha.

YEEEEESSSSSSS!

Oh wait, my laptop probably can’t run any of those. Poo.

Ohhh actually maybe it can run TF2. That would be THE BOSS.

Oh damn, that means my mac buddies can join in our LAN parties now! The only other game we really play is WC3, and might be usurped by SC2 when it comes out if it gets some good mauls. I could at least get my roommate to play some L4D2. =P

Good news for those with Macs.
I’m still good with Win7 though. XD

Sometime this week I will install the new Alien Vs. Predator onto my computer and report back to you guys.

I’m just about finished with God of War I. This is one of the best games I’ve ever played.I love the game play, weapons, story. Can’t wait to beat this and play GoW II and III.

Has anyone checked out the new On-Demand gaming company due out in June?
http://www.onlive.com/
It looks like it could make some waves, but I wonder how speed will be affected when someone is on a slower server or what you will do if you lose the Internet for a few hours.

I signed up to beta test for OnLive when it was first announced a couple years ago, but never got any word back from them. Doesn’t seem like it’ll really pick up, since all the gaming giants still take up the spotlight, haven’t heard much about OnLive at all.

So the Game Developer’s Conference was just streamed on Gamespot. My god, was it screwy. Some highlights:

Gabe Newell, co-founder of Valve, was giving a power-point presentation, and RIGHT AS HE WAS ABOUT TO ANNOUNCE A NEW PRODUCT, he gets the blue screen of death. He then says “I guess this is what I get for working with Microsoft”, then goes on to say how the Valve community have done a good job at picking up clues left by Valve over the supposed content of the announcement. He finally walks off the stage saying “Good luck figuring it out.” with a jolly, shit-eating grin.

People are speculating, myself included, that the BSOD was actually staged, and that it was another way of showing his support for the Mac platform.

At the end of the ceremonies, the host Warren Spector (game designer of Deus Ex and System Shock) thanks Gamespot for streaming the ceremonies, and just as he’s about to unveil the trailer for Deus Ex 3, Gamespot cuts the stream. :expressionless:

Lotta good laughs tonight.

http://www.gamechoiceawards.com/winners/index.htm Uncharted 2 really dominated.

I was watching too, in my mind it was definitely staged, what with the steam on mac news thats come out recently. Fuck Gabe though, I like how he said that they’d never fully commit to the PS3 because it was a waste of time, then some other dude at Valve recently said that theyre commited to makign better games for the ps3. Nice! >.>

The conference was so so, nothing too exciting, except of course them Sony Dildos.

Gabe just seems to have a personal vendetta against Sony. Didn’t he say he wouldn’t support PS3 because it was coded differently? Now he’s supporting Macs… which are coded differently.

I only started watching half-way through, right at the end of awkward red shirt guy and partner’s hosting.

Why is Sony releasing PS3motes???

Also, here’s a possible shot of the entire “BSOD”–definitely staged if this is the case. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah thats what he said, but then again he says a lot of stupid shit…-_-

Honestly, I dont even know why theyre bothering with ripping off nintendo this late in the game. The motion sensor fad thing is pretty much over, they took way too long to take advantage of it.
