Video Game News & Discussion 2009-2017

lol true. I’m not sure if there will be a new name for this set but if they announce one in a future headline, I can’t wait to see what it is.

Given the age of the 3ds and all the revisions that it has gotten, it’s time for a new handheld.

The 3ds is smoked by even dated smartphones nowadays.

Bring back the game boy. The ds was supposed to be a suppliment, not a replacement but yet…

Nintendo is known for doing some mid-lifespan upgrades with their systems, but with the hardware upgrades this new 3DS is getting, it’s nearly a new system. Since the Xenoblade Chronicles port to the 3DS will only be playable on the New 3DS systems, that tells me that these upgrades are significantly more than they’ve done with a system in the past.

I was an early adopter of the 3DS, I’ve had mine since initial release, so I’m thinking I may invest in one of these New 3DS systems…

Unfortunately, I doubt they’ll change the name. Did you see how fancy that “New” graphic is? Someone spent a lot of time on that, they’re not going to just change it.

Nintendo really needs to fire whoever names their stuff though… New 3DS? Why not 3DSU? or 3DS2? or Two-Screened flappy clam-shell device? That would at least be a better name than New 3DS.

And while they’re firing the guy who names their systems, they should fire whoever thought a good reward for Platinum Club Nintendo members was some crappy free games.

http://epn.tv/all/type-of/news/nintendo-amiibo-launch-details/Nintendo Amiibo Launch Details
Nintendo has announced the launch details for their new amiibo toy line.

Twelve figures will be available at launch: Mario, Peach, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, Kirby, Fox, Marth, Villager and the Wii Fit Trainer (see above). Each one of them will cost $13. A precise launch date hasn’t been named, but they’ll hit stores at the same time as the first compatible game, Super Smash Bros for the Wii U, which will be released sometime this holiday season.

Inspired by Skylanders and Disney Infinity, the amiibo toys use the near field communication (NFC) technology of the Wii U and 3DS to unlock new in-game content, and they’ll work across multiple different games. Along with Super Smash Bros, the other confirmed titles are Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10, and Yoshi’s Woolly World. Expect more games and figures to be announced soon.

The mini-game compilation series NES Remix is making the jump from the Wii U to the 3DS.

Nintendo has announced Ultimate NES Remix, the first instalment of the series for the handheld 3DS. It will be available on December 5 for $30, and like the two Wii U games, it will offer new versions of levels from classic NES titles complete with ‘remixed’ additions like crossover characters and increased difficulty. The new game will also include an online leaderboard, so you can compare your skills to other players.

According to Nintendo, Ultimate NES Remix will include levels from 16 different games, although they haven’t said what those 16 games will be. Expect more details soon.

http://epn.tv/all/spotlight/new-saints-row-game-announced/Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell Announced
Get ready to go to hell in the next Saints Row game.

Today at the Penny Arcade Expo, Deep Silver announced Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell. It’s as a standalone expansion to Saints Row IV, and will be available on the PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC starting January 27, 2015. It will cost $20.

Deep Silver has also revealed that Saints Row IV is being re-released on the PS4 and Xbox One in a new edition called Saints Row IV: Re-Elected. It will include the original game and all of its DLC remastered with better graphics and audio. That will cost $30, and you can get it in a bundle with Gat Out of Hell for $50. It also arrives January 27, 2015.

As the name implies, Gat Out of Hell will see the Saints pulled down to the darkest depths of hell after playing around with a ouija board, and there will be plenty of demons to battle with zany new weapons. You’ll even be able to shoot the devil in the face! Since this is a downloadable game, it will only be about half the size of Saints Row IV. Along with the single-player campaign, you’ll also get a two-player co-op mode where you can play as Johnny Gat or Kinzie Kensington.

This will be the second game in the franchise since it was taken over by Deep Silver after original publisher THQ went under in 2012.

This inspired RPG adventure includes a range of new features and gameplay improvements to double the amount of mischievous fun. http://epn.tv/all/type-of/news/resident-evil-revelations-2-officially-announced-for-early-2015/Resident Evil Revelations 2 Announced
Capcom has officially announced Resident Evil Revelations 2. The first details on the game leaked online last week, but now the studio has confirmed that it’s set to launch in early 2015 on the PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC.

No gameplay footage has been shown, but a live action concept teaser was released that gives us an idea about the tone. It appears to be going for a traditional survival horror feel just like the first Resident Evil Revelations game, which took place between the events of Resident Evil 4 and 5. Capcom says that it will have a new setting with new characters, with more details to be announced later this month at the Tokyo Game Show.

In other revelations from the world of Resident Evil, Capcom has released the first trailer for the new Resident Evil Remastered edition, giving us our first look at gameplay. As the title implies, it’s a remake of the first game in the series, complete with new graphics, audio, and a more modern control option. It will launch in early 2015 for the PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC.

http://epn.tv/all/type-of/news/new-hot-shots-golf-announced-for-playstation-4/Hot Shots Golf Coming to PS4
Today at a pre-Tokyo Game Show press conference, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that a new Hot Shots Golf game is in the works for the PlayStation 4. This will be the first game in the popular golf series made for the new console, and Yoshida says it will offer an open-world gameplay experience. That’s about all we know for now, but expect more details to be unveiled when the Tokyo Game Show kicks off on September 18.

The world is long overdue for a new Hot Shots Golf experience. There hasn’t been a game made just for consoles since Hot Shots Golf 5 teed-off on the PS3 back in 2008. The last game in the series, Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, was released in 2011 for the Vita, but found its way to the PS3 as a port last year.

The new puzzle game Flockers is set to hit the Xbox One and PC on September 19, with the PS4 version set to follow on September 23. It’s already available via Steam Early Access.

Developed by Team17, the studio behind the Worms series, Flockers is a Lemmings-style A to B puzzler where players guide a group of sheep across levels that are filled with hazards. There’s plenty of dark humour, but if all your sheep die, it’s game over. The game offers 60 main levels, with 6 secret levels to be found.
The Amiibo figures are pretty cool looking. I would pay the $13 even if I didn’t have a WiiU to use them with. It looks like the Link and Samus ones are the most popular. The Link figure was pretty high on the video game top sellers on amazon for a little while when the pre-orders started for them.

Here are the two live action trailers to the upcoming game, Destiny. First up is the latest one followed by one that was released quite some time ago. Even if you are not going to get the game, they are quite entertaining none the least.

:frowning:

I’m sort of torn on whether I want to get Destiny now, or wait a little while. There are rumors going around that it’ll get a PC release in March, but those are only rumors, and there’s no way to confirm them, since Bungie says they have no plans to port it to PC at the moment… I just don’t want to get it on my PS4, only to have it come out 6 months later on PC, where all my friends will undoubtedly play it, since only one of them has a PS4, and he wants to wait for the PC release…

Maybe I’ll just rent it… There’s plenty of Nintendo games to play in the mean time, plus the next WoW expansion…

B)

The trailer actually wasn’t that bad. Kinda stereotypical, but still better than the Skyrim live-action one. Unfortunately the game is still going to be on 360 so it’ll look like crap on all platforms as virtually every dev targets the lowest console. Maybe we’ll get a High Res texture pack on the other platforms, but that’s like lipstick on a pig.

Though points off for a) stating that it’ll be 100s of years before humans go the moon again b) showing the American flag with color still on it as supposedly they’re all already bleached white by the constant exposure to sunlight.
Move over, Vita. There’s another way to play your games remotely off the PS4.

Sony has unveiled the new Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact, the first smartphones that support Remote Play with the PS4. There will even be a peripheral that allows you to mount the phone to the DualShock controller, which means you won’t have to awkwardly balance the phone on your lap while you’re holding the controller. The phones are also water proof, so you can take them into the tub, but unfortunately the controllers are not.
You’ll soon be able to hack into new content for Watch Dogs.

Ubisoft has announced the first big batch of DLC for the cyberpunk game. Known as Bad Blood, it will give players a new single-player story where you take the role of the supporting character T-Bone from the main game. He’ll take on the corrupt Blume Corporation, and there will be new weapons and gadgets at your disposal. There will also be new Street Sweep side missions, giving players hours of new contracts to complete, and best of all, they’ll be playable by yourself or in co-op.

Watch Dogs: Bad Blood will launch on September 23 for Season Pass holders, and land a week later for everyone else.
http://epn.tv/all/type-of/news/shadow-of-the-colossus-movie-finds-a-new-director/Shadow of the Colossus Gets New Director
The big screen adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus has roamed the landscape and found a new director.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is set to be helmed by Spanish filmmaker Andres Muschietti, who previously wrote and directed the 2013 horror movie Mama. This will only be his second feature film, so needless to say its his biggest and most formidable project yet. Muschietti will take over from Chronicle director Josh Trank, who was originally attached to helm but dropped out due to commitments to other projects like The Fantastic Four and the second Star Wars spin-off.

Like the game, the Shadow of the Colossus movie will tell the story of a young wanderer, named Wander, who embarks on a quest to slay sixteen massive creatures known as colossi in order to resurrect his fallen lover. The story in the game isn’t as important as the visuals and the atmosphere, so don’t be surprised if the movie does something similar.
The new racing sim Project Cars will race into North America on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 18.

Along with beautiful graphics, the thing that makes Project Cars unique is that developer Slightly Mad Studios used fan input throughout every stage of development, creating one of the first AAA crowdsourced games. The word ‘cars’ in the title actually has a double meaning, because it stands for Community Assisted Racing Simulator.

Project Cars is also in the works for the Wii U and SteamOS, along with the Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus virtual reality headsets. Expect those versions to cross the finish line next year.

For the first time, Mortal Kombat X gives players the ability to choose from multiple variations of each character impacting both strategy and fighting style. Players step into an original story showcasing some of the game’s most prolific characters including Scorpion and Sub-Zero, while introducing new challengers that represent the forces of good and evil and tie the tale together.
Prepare for more blasphemy in video game form, because The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is set to launch on the PC, PS4, and Vita on November 4. Rebirth is an updated version of the original Binding of Isaac as well as the Wrath of the Lamb expansion, and includes all-new items and bosses. There’s also a new two-player co-op mode.

The developers also hope to bring the game to the 3DS, but because of Nintendo’s policy against overtly religious content in games, that’s unlikely to happen. For those of you who didn’t pay attention in Sunday school, the Binding of Isaac is a thinly-veiled critique of the tale of Isaac and Abraham, which is a revered story in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
Xenoblade Chronicles isn’t the only game that will make use of the new 3DS and 3DS XL models.

Retro City Rampage creator (and EPN friend) Brian Provinciano has announced that the 3DS version of the game, known as Retro City Rampage DX, will be getting an update that will take advantage of the new buttons on the updated models. Along with two extra shoulder buttons, the new 3DS has a much-needed second analogue thumb stick, known as the C-Button, which is something fans have been demanding for a long time.

Retro City Rampage DX was originally going to include support for the Circle Pad Pro, but it was dropped because the peripheral made the controls too awkward.

The new 3DS models will ship in Japan next month, but won’t land in North America until next year. Expect the update for Retro City Rampage DX to arrive around the same time.
UPDATE: Nintendo has confirmed that the new models will be region locked, which means you won’t be able to buy one in Japan and then use it to play games purchased in North America.

Ubisoft has officially announced that the long-awaited Wii U version of the game will finally arrive in all of North America on November 18. It was originally slated to be released with all the other versions earlier this year, but was delayed several times. There were even rumors that it had been cancelled.

The Wii U version will use the GamePad to make it easier to find your way around Chicago and hack into things, but like most other games for the system, it can also be played with the traditional controller. There, of course, is also off-TV play.

Over on the other platforms, the next big expansion for Watch Dogs, known as Bad Blood, will begin rolling out before the end of the month.

Don’t expect to play Resident Evil Revelations 2 all at once.

Capcom has announced that their new zombie-killing extravaganza will be a weekly, 4-part episodic game, with players able to purchase each instalment separately or all together. Each episode will cost $6 by itself, with a $25 digital Season Pass that includes additional content. Capcom says each episode “will feature hours of terrifying gameplay ending with dramatic cliff-hangers.”

A retail disc version of the game will be made available after all four episodes have gone live, and it will cost $40 and include even more extra content. Capcom hasn’t said exactly what that extra content will be.

The first episode of Resident Evil Revelations 2 will launch in early 2015. The game will be available on the PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC.

The beginning of the Resident Evil Revelations 2 tale sees fan favourite Claire Redfield make a dramatic return to the horrors that haunted her in the past . Survivor of the Raccoon City incident depicted in previous Resident Evil games, Claire now works for the anti-bioterrorism organization Terra Save. Moira Burton, new recruit and daughter of Resident Evil legend Barry Burton, is attending her welcome party for Terra Save when unknown armed forces storm the office. Claire and Moira are knocked unconscious and awaken later to find themselves in a dark and abandoned detention facility. Working together, they must find out who took them and to what sinister end. With the terrifying Afflicted enemies waiting around every dark corner, players will need to use their ammo and weapon supply wisely, in classic survival horror style. Will Claire and Moira make it out alive and discover what’s led to them being taken to this remote island? Who else will they come across? A story of twists and turns will have players guessing the next step at every turn.

They’ll be available for download and in stores, and retail versions are also coming to the PS3, Xbox 360, and Vita.

As for The Wolf Among Us, the entire first season will hit the PS4 and Xbox One in November. Like The Walking Dead, it will be available via download or in stores, and retail copies of the last-gen versions are also on the way.

http://epn.tv/all/type-of/news/pikmin/Pikmin Getting Animated Short Films
Nintendo may be looking to branch out into the world of film and television.

The company has created three animated short films based on the Pikmin video games, which will be screened at the Tokyo International Film Festival next month. They haven’t released any clips or images yet, but we do know that the shorts were created using computer animation and will be screened in 3D. All three were overseen by Pikmin game maker Shigeru Miyamoto, and Variety reports that they were made as part of a research project for the company. This could mean that Nintendo is interested in producing more animated movies in the future.

The three Pikmin shorts have their own titles: The Night Juicer, Treasures in a Bottle, and Occupational Hazards, and together they’re known simply as Pikmin Short Movies. Hopefully they’ll be made available on the Nintendo eShop or other online platforms after they’re screened at the Tokyo International Film Festival. The festival kicks off October 25.

You’ll be able to play the new zombie survival game Dying Light a little sooner than expected.

Developer Techland and publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment have announced that the game will hit consoles and the PC on January 27, 2015, a month ahead of its original release window of February. That’s not much of a difference, but should come as a welcome change for those of us eager to play the game. It was originally slated to arrive this year, before being pushed back earlier this summer.

In Dying Light, players must survive in an open world filled with zombies and other terrifying creatures. The difference between day and night can mean the difference between life and death, with the most terrifying monsters only coming out at night. The development team is using some cool next-gen lighting technology to make it all work.

PS4 and Xbox One gamers finally know when they can start exploring Los Santos, because Rockstar has officially announced that the next-gen version of Grand Theft Auto V will launch on November 18. As for the PC, you’ll have to wait a little longer for that, because it won’t arrive until January 27, 2015.

Along with better graphics, draw distances, damage effects, and denser traffic, Rockstar is giving players some new content to make it worth the wait. The PS4, Xbox One, and PC versions will include new weapons, vehicles, and in-game activities, along with more animal wildlife and more realistic foliage. There will also be more songs to listen to on the radio. As for GTA Online, the next-gen version will have an increased player count, allowing up to 30 players in a single match. You won’t have to start over again with a new online character either, because you’ll be able to transfer over your character from the previous versions.

Anyone who pre-orders the new version of GTA V will get an extra $1 million of spending money in the game, with half going to the single player campaign, and the other half going to GTA Online.

http://epn.tv/all/spotlight/microsoft-officially-buys-minecraft-developer/Microsoft Officially Buys Minecraft
Microsoft has officially announced that it’s buying Minecraft developer Mojang, following leaked reports that began surfacing last week. The acquisition is worth $2.5 billion, and will be completed before the end of the year.

First of all, Microsoft promises that the game will continue to be available on rival platforms, and specifically mentions that PlayStation, iOS, and Android users will still be able to be supported. This should come as a sigh of relief for fans of the game on those platforms. The annual MineCon convention will also continue as planned.

Fans might be a little disappointed to learn that Minecraft creator and Mojang founder Markus ‘Notch’ Persson will leave the company once the acquisition goes through. In a post on his blog, he says he plans to go back to creating smaller projects by himself, which is how Minecraft got started in the first place. Hopefully the game will continue to be awesome without his involvement.

So what does this mean for the future of Minecraft? In a statement, Microsoft says they will respect the independent spirit of the game, and move the franchise forward in new ways on Xbox Live and mobile devices. That likely means a Windows Phone port of the game will arrive soon, and expect more content to be released for the Xbox versions. Going forward, Microsoft says their investments in cloud computing and other technologies “will enable players to benefit from richer and faster worlds, more powerful development tools, and more opportunities to connect with the Minecraft community.” Expect more firm details about what all that means in the near future.

Here’s the official statement from Xbox head Phil Spencer:

Today is an incredibly exciting day for our team as Mojang and the Minecraft franchise join Microsoft. Minecraft is one of the most popular video games of all time, with more than 100 million downloads, on PC alone, from players since its launch in 2009. Minecraft inspires millions to create together, connects people across the globe, and is a community that is among the most active and passionate in the world.

Our relationship with Mojang began when we initially talked to the team about bringing Minecraft to the console. Minecraft quickly became the top online game on Xbox Live, with over two billion hours played on Xbox 360 in the last two years. That working relationship set the ground work for other opportunities. We’ve long seen the incredible potential of Minecraft.

At Microsoft, we believe in the power of content to unite people. Minecraft adds diversity to our game portfolio and helps us reach new gamers across multiple platforms. Gaming is the top activity across devices and we see great potential to continue to grow the Minecraft community and nurture the franchise. That is why we plan to continue to make Minecraft available across platforms – including iOS, Android and PlayStation, in addition to Xbox and PC.

The Minecraft community is passionate and diverse, ranging across all ages and demographics. We respect the brand and independent spirit that has made Minecraft great, and we’ll carry on the tradition of innovation to move the franchise forward. Our investments in cloud, Xbox Live and mobile technology will enable players to benefit from richer and faster worlds, more powerful development tools, and more opportunities to connect with the Minecraft community.

We’re excited to confirm that MINECON will continue next year. We’ll look to create even more ways for the vibrant community of YouTuber’s, innovators, bloggers and players to connect with each other – both in person and online. We will have much more to share in the coming months.

The Minecraft team’s unique vision, creative energy and innovative mindset make them a perfect fit alongside our other global studios. Microsoft Studios includes 343 Industries, Turn 10 Studios, and Lionhead Studios just to name a few. These industry-leading game studios within Microsoft that have had great success with beloved games and massively popular franchises like Halo, Forza, and Fable. We’re excited to welcome Mojang to the Microsoft family and we are thrilled to support the success and longevity of Minecraft for years to come.

The film, known as Dead Rising: Watchtower, will be directed by Zach Lipovsky, who last worked on the horror movie Leprechaun: Origins. They’re currently in pre-production, with shooting slated to begin soon.

Dead Rising: Watchtower will be released on Crackle in its entirety next year, and then be chopped up and released episodically on other platforms around the globe.
